Gwin's Telemetry GoPro Run - Video

Feb 15, 2017
by Pinkbike Staff

We all know that the pro riders are way faster than us mere mortals, but this new telemetry overlay feature from GoPro could give us all some really interesting insights to what speeds pro athletes do on trails that we ride, or would like to. Gwin hits top speeds of ~34mph in this video—how close do you think you can get to that?

Stockl hit 167 kph. Gwin punched 34 mph square in the face.

Stockl only went in a straight line in the dry. Just sayin'...

smooth and relatively straight . not exactly world cup worthy terrain

The fastest i've gone is 38mph on a fire road on a hard tail! talk about fun!

@MountianBikerJoe: Gwin made a big mistake showing me his lines. Now I know what to do.

I am not capable of riding that trail without falling
  • 9 1
@driftmonster: Come back and comment after you've ridden that trail. It's not flat or smooth, as any number of UCI DH racers that have ridden it would attest I'm sure.
  • 2 0
@MountianBikerJoe: right on! broke 40 once near the bottom of a resort (grand targhee) on the cat track. it straightens out near the bottom but still hard pack and gravel. the most scared i've ever been in my life. in that moment (summer 2000) i understood why disc brakes, body armor, and big rubber were a good idea. never again.

sweet vid! nice gap at the bottom!

www.strava.com/activities/52169444 I hit 64.8 km/hr on one of my old trails in Penticton BC. yes, its' an actual trail with jumps and everything!

lame you have to log in to strava though haha. i'll try screen shot and upload to pinkbike.
  • 2 1
 @driftmonster: where do you ride?
  • 8 1
@driftmonster: I'm sure you can beat him on strava. I have faith in you, go up to that trail and give it a try! It's located on off Ortega highway 74 in lake elsinore. Can't miss it.

Attn moron gwin fan boys . Never said I was faster only that the track didn't look to bad . #2017yearOfThebaculum
  • 12 3
@driftmonster: Name calling, what are you twelve? Lol Gwin's a pretty cool dude if you know him. And guilty as charged, I am a fan I've met him on my local trails. I doubt you've even been to that trail in the vid. Know the terrain before you make a comment about a place you've never been. Gopros tend to flatten out trails making steep and tech look like a cake walk.
  • 1 0
I'd get pretty close. Coast down the hill with no brakes. Yeah, I'd get pretty close. Maybe even more since I run high tire pressures.
  • 3 2
@driftmonster: Ever ride Whiteface? It is bigger and faster (with gnar) than most places I have been to, on the east.
  • 1 1
Confident I could get one of those numbers
  • 3 2
If gwins using it to train / dial bikes then it's definitely a legitimate track regardless of what the go pro says.
  • 3 0
@monstertiki: hey how's it compare tech wise to fontucky? I've ridden everything highland has to offer and will say if this trail has the tech and steepness Fontana has on some of their courses @driftmonster needs to shut his dirty whore mouth. East coast ain't the only place with steep and technical gnar.
  • 2 0
@scotttherider: Fontana really isn't a true downhill, it has gnarly tech lines yes and some pretty good ones, especially the shoot at the end that they normally do for nationals. But it doesn't have the sustained steepness and speed of a true dh course. This place, known as the "sam hill trail" (it has several names), has most of the tech is up top. It's one of the steeper trails socal has to offer, lots of people ride it just not anywhere near gwins speed on it.

@driftmonster: you do know world cup tracks look easy from a go-pro right? Anyone who has ridden this trail knows it's anything but smooth and straight -- including a bunch of WC pros.
  • 1 1
@driftmonster: why in the hell do you care about what anyone thinks anyway. Do you know these people that are down voting you? Fuhcking whiny babies. I really don't know what the purpose of the up/down vote is. Damn I have woken up on the wrong side of the bed!

that trail be like.... Sand, sand, some dirt... BAM FUCKING ROCK GARDEN.. sand, sand... dirt... repeat.
  • 6 2
Yeah it's impressive how fast he is going for how rough and eroded that trail looks...
  • 1 0
It's weird seeing him ride in sand when in the east all I ever rode was pure dirt, roots, and rocks
  • 24 0
I counted no less than 179 places where I would have crashed and he makes it look smooth as butter, while pulling more than 1g in the corners. That was impressive and depressing all at the same time.
  • 14 0
I mean I could probably almost go that fast but I would eat shit on the first turn
  • 23 0
I could go that fast, but I would be cartwheeling down the mountain unconscious.

  • 13 0
34mph on the easiest part of the trail is not the impressive part its his cornering speed

I thought that was called the Sam Hill trail since according to rumors ive heard he built that trail with his coach a long time ago.

  • 3 0
Thats 55km/h. Doesn't sound like much but friends with motorbikes don't really get it. In may cases a moto would be slower than an MTB - especially where the track is tight and twisty. I love the vid of GA beating a KTM Enduro bike down Fort William.

uh maybe SoCal but here in Norcal we have a shit ton of trees
  • 7 1
@oneplanka @Circe Giant Sequoias, known for including the General Sherman, the world's most massive tree, is Sequoiadendron Gigantem. Coastal Redwoods, known for including the world's tallest tree, is Sequoia Sempervirens. Not only are they a different species, but they are also a different genus. Gigantem is the only living species of the Sequoiadendron genus. Giant Sequoias and Coast Redwoods are related at the subfamily level, Sequoioideae.
