Bike Check: Gwin and Troy's Custom Specialized Demos - DH World Championships Vallnord 2015

A Case of National Pride

Are Gwin and Troy's Demo race bikes the trickest World Championship machines ever? I don't think you need to be an American to appreciate the level of detail that Specialized, HT, Renthal the rest of the team's sponsors have gone to on Aaron's rig, with the finished product likely being the most patriotic bike in the pits. Both frames are the very same custom Demos that we saw earlier in the year, including the modified carbon layup that Jason Chamberlain, Specialized's Senior Engineer, told us may or may not ever see production. '''Stiffer' would be far too much of a simplification of what we are doing,'' he explained about the modified layup back in April, possibly hinting that the team are looking to tune both amount of flex that the frame provides and how it flexes when being ridden at World Cup speeds. The bike is also equipped with the CNC'd aluminum rocker link, machined right in Specialized's Morgan Hill headquarters, that adds a bit of adjustability and creates a more progressive suspension rate.

A special gold anodized chain and X01 DH cassette have been included on the build.

See that broken chain on the back of the seat tube? It's a nod to Gwin's World Cup winning coaster run in Leogang earlier this year.

While Specialized does have a paint shop in Morgan Hill, California, that has put out some incredibly detailed bikes, both Gwin and Troy's Demos were actually painted by a shop in Europe that the team use for overseas jobs. A close look at Gwin's bike reveals some cool things: there's twelve stars that represent the twelve World Cup wins that Gwin had notched up at the time that his frame was painted (he's since won two more, though), and a bald eagle on the back of the bike's seat tube is holding a broken chain in its talons, a homage to his ridiculous chain-less win at the Leogang World Cup that saw him pump, tuck and coast to victory.

Gwin amp Brosnan World Champs bikes 2015
Not to be outdone, Troy's Demo is done up in his country's colours.

Troy's Demo might not be quite as flashy, but it's looking pretty fresh in those colours. Both bikes are also sporting gold anodized chains and X01 DH cassettes, as well as a slew of titanium bolts all around that shave a bit more weight off. On a more detailed setup note, Gwin's mechanic, John Hall, explained that he doesn't like to flush the grease out of the bike's bearings before he hands it off to his rider, saying that he believes that it's more important that the bike sounds smooth and doesn't give off any false sense of speed, strange rattles, or sport a crazy loud freehub.
bigquotesYeah, it's always good when you're the Australian Champ and you run the sleeve all year at the World Cups. It's pretty cool, but then when you actually get selected to race for Australia and you have all the little bits from Australia on the bike, it's pretty good. And just World Champs in general - the whole of Australia is backing me for the win and that feels pretty good! - Troy Brosnan

Both of these machines are sexy as hell!!! I have been in love with the new Demo since day 1 and these paint jobs just take it over the top!! Good luck to both Gwin and Brosnan at worlds!
  • 27 8
honestly i thought they were a little ugly at first. but these two bikes are making me rethink that
  • 19 3
Couldn't agree more, even ignoring the sick paintjobs they're great looking bikes. I love how they don't look like overkill like a lot of big dh rigs often do.

What do enduro-coileds have to say ? There is something in the air....sprung...
  • 4 3
Got to agree. Every year I think Gwin has the best looking bike. The sponsors he has also massively help make the bike look so cool. I Always run shimano kit but even I have to admit that sram xo looks dam sexy. I'm also a massive sucker for a bit of kashima coating, never been a fan of the black stantions.
  • 14 1
Yeah, they look sweet, but PROTOUR is going to say that this new paint job will make them even more unsafe for riding! Meanwhile, Gwin and Troy will go 1-2 in the race which will totally prove his point.
  • 2 1
Come on, just ride and make a Flag Edition, just like what Look did for some of their 795 roadbike rigs . . .

Gorgeous bikes all around for sure. Im quite interested in their weights and prices (just for shits and giggles) though.

I really hope No Chain wins it. He is more deserving than anyone else.

I want an answer to this !
WHY DOSENT GWIN RUN HIS OWN GRIPS?!!
  • 2 0
Good question, because they are really good grips. Maybe he's working on a mk2...
  • 2 0
I know! They are great grips! This really bugs me for some reason

Yes, I think I'm in love. I'm going to start saving up for one of these, hopefully I can find a used one next year for a good price.

I will never buy into that frame look, I much prefer their previous demo. But the bike has a winning pedigree and to some that looks decent.

You know you're the shit when they do this to your bike
  • 25 4
So I've seen this a bunch of times, and I always ask myself the same stupid question. How does the bike stand up like this on th photos? Anybody?
  • 58 0
It's the ol' 3-2-1 let go routine.

helper holds up bike. lets go of bike, gets out of the frame. photographer snaps a quick photo. helper catches the bike before it falls over.

there are quite a few methods but the most common would be to take 2 pictures and photoshop whatever is holding the bike. This is a professional photo of a professional bike in a well known webpage, photoshop is allowed for these type of things

 www.pinkbike.com/news/you-probably-havent-seen-these-bikes-whistler-crankworx-2015.html

Do my eyes deceive me or do I see a little ghostly helper in this picture? Maybe keeping the shutter open long enough for the helper to move out of the picture?
  • 3 2
anything u want it to hold??? We live in the 21st century.... I am working on photoshop a lot and I know you could use like anything if it's not covering the important deatils. the rest can be easily generated by photoshop.
Those pictures are worked over anyway (propably with lightroom) so it wouldn'T be a big problem to open photoshop for a few minutes and wipe out what ever holds the bike. Wink
  • 13 1
You must be fast to get all those angles before the bike falls over
  • 7 0
...a little piece of fishing line helps to reduce the amount of photoshop/lightroom hours to be spent on one of these to a minimum...

Yes, we might live in the 21st century and you could remove whatever you want from a picture but spending time on something that does not have to be done is still wasting money... or not earning much for that matter...
  • 1 0
@michibretz sure they will keep it as small as possible but practically anything you can use what you want to. It'll propably be just a some small things, holding the wheels.

its easy to get a bike to stand up using a small twig against the side of the back tire, and finding the balance point when you put the twig in place, at the correct angle so the bike is loading the twig
  • 21 0
I guess they gold-plate the chains so they are easier to spot if they fall off. Smart.

"John Hall, explained that he doesn't like to flush the grease out of the bike's bearings before he hands it off to his rider" do a lot of riders in the WC run bearings without grease?
  • 31 0
Yes - often the team mechanics will remove bearing grease and replace it with a light oil. It's enough to last a few runs, but not what you'd want to do on your daily driver.
  • 10 0
Thanks mike! Its always interesting knowing these little secrets
  • 2 0
I'm a slow old man, but I take the grease out of my hub bearings because in my mind I think it rolls faster. It means I have to check them often.

In my opinion, no matter the color scheme, that Specialized is killing it in terms of aesthetics with the demo. Hands down, the most eye pleasing bike on the market. I plan on watching this one live, fingers crossed that a stream is available and I am not passed out drunk!
  • 9 2
It's hard to be second best rider in team, since your bike's wheels doesn't get aligned perfectly before photoshoots while the other guy deserves more attention to detail.

Is it just me or do the head angles look different?
  • 4 0
...Scrolls up real quick, scrolls down real quick...back up...back down...who knows...
  • 6 0
Both frames have the same head angle from the factory, but the proto CNC aluminum rocker links give +/- 6mm of bottom bracket height adjustment and a bit less than half a degree of head angle change, not to mention what sliding the fork's stanchions up or down in the crowns will do. What you're seeing is most likely just the angle of the photos, though, as I'd wager there's a pretty small difference in geo between the two bikes.
  • 3 0
The front looks so tall and steep for some reason.
  • 3 1
Gwin's could use some blue fork lowers, white decals and stars to tie it all together..
  • 3 2
Fox didn't put much effort into Americanizing Gwin's bike. The bars on Gwin's and paint job on both frames look cool.
  • 4 1
Ya, fox should have done one red stanchion and one blue. With white lowers of course.

  • 1 0
When did they change the swingarm? Do they really need to save more weight on the bikes
  • 1 0
Earlier in the year for Gwin. This is the first time I've seen Troy on it. Has more to do with creating a more progressive rate than saving weight.
  • 2 1
It's a pity Peaty isn't racing this one...he always has the most amazing worlds bike. These two bikes help lessen the blow.
  • 1 0
 Nice bikes.

You would think they would be sporting the latest carbon/ceramic wonder rims instead of sub $100 aluminum DT's.
  • 1 0
Never noticed before that Brosnan and Gwin have different suspension sponsors. Odd for being on the same team.
  • 1 0
Is it just me or do these bikes both look like a session?
  • 1 0
Anyone know why they have the alu shock linkage and not the carbon one? :o
  • 1 0
the stock carbon ones didn't have enough ramp up for how hard Gwin and Brosnan ride so they are on proto Alu linkages.
  • 2 0
The lack of progression in the unmodified suspension design could also be why both run air shocks instead of coils, although if they have the option to cut out new linkages for every race then couldnt they cut one out that provides a lot more progression and couple it with a coil shock? I ask because it seems like if any track warrants a coil shock over an air shock it would be Andorra.
  • 1 0
I also was a bit surprised to see them both still on air
  • 3 0
Their mechanics said they tested them and could not tell a difference and the air was lighter so they went with that
  • 2 1
^this. the new air shocks are so good, you will see less and less coils on racer's DH builds in the future. Enduro racers will still use coil since their descents are (typically) so much longer.
  • 2 5
Obviously the factory wants to experiment and progress, that's what racing is for, but I always feel more excited when they are racing the showroom frame rather than custom works bicycles. Love the customized looks though, and I have always thought the new Demo is a gorgeous bike. I guess the separate axle path/shock drive design on the old Demo was not the best ever though, despite what 10 years of marketing said.

Minnaar's bikes are always better equipped... why is that?
  • 2 0
I doubt it has anything to do with the fact he's been a consistent force for almost 15yrs on the WC circuit.
  • 1 0
better equipped? between him and josh the main differences are bash guard (for obvious reasons) stem and tires... not really better equipped but just more specific to their riding style
  • 1 0
Minnaar has ENVE for EVERYTHING on his bike vs. Gwin's house brand Specialized stuff and DT wheels and cockpit stuff.

It obviously doesn't affect Gwin's ability but it's just funny to see Minnaar on a bike that costs twice as much when Gwin's main sponsor is way bigger than Minnaar's (obviously I am not accounting for their individual sponsorship contract, but still)
  • 2 0
just because its 2x as expensive doesnt mean its any better
  • 2 0
So given the choice, at no cost to you, you wouldn't care between DT wheels and ENVE wheels?
  • 2 0
got both and would choose dt wheels
  • 2 0
Why? I'm guessing you're just lying to prove a point.

Obviously rims that are 10x as expensive aren't necessarily 10x as good (or even 2x as good) but there's no reason to go with DT over ENVE at the same cost.
  • 1 0

I took a close look at Gwinny's and Troys DT rims after their final runs at Val Di Sole and they were pretty much intact, which is supposed to be impossible according to ENVE marketing. I didn't see a pile of wrecked rims behind their tent either. Most of top guys don't even know their bar widths or tyre pressures, so they wouldn't give a tiniest damn about what rims they are on. As long as the manufacturer pays the bills in exchange for hashtags they are happy
  • 2 0
We are quite proud to have Gwin and Troy riding our wheels. While Enve makes a great rim(and other products), the set up that Gwin and Troy are riding is pretty light and the EX471 rims have proven to hold up to plenty of abuse (Gwin at Leogang last year anyone?). Looking at our weights vs. those of the Enve DH wheel may shock a few?
Carbon is the new (not really that new anymore) drool worthy material, but a well executed alloy is still very viable and affordable!
  • 1 0
@DTShane - don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of DT products. Just surprised to see Minnaar on the most bling stuff on the market but Gwin on rims the average guy would be on.
  • 1 0
@DTShane - I sold LB carbon rims because I was tired of them feeling so harsh, and bought EX471s and I am a huge fan! They were easy to build and true, tyre installation with Stans tape was easy too, I didn't even need to think about using a lever to put the tyre on and that didn't cause any problem with sealing. Everything nice and smooth. All that in a good price range, over 30% cheaper than closest competitors in weight/width department. Sweet stuff!
  • 1 0
@waki What exactly do you mean by them feeling harsh?
I thought the point is to keep the wheels on the ground and not having them roll over you.
No seriously, I would like to know.
  • 1 0
Basically carbon rims make your bike feel like it has less travel. Every hit gets amplified a bit both with what you get through bars and what your hear. If I ever move to big mountains and buy a 29er I may buy carbon rims as big wheels are taxing both the flex and weight.
  • 1 0
Placebo effect @WAKIdesigns ... Nox did testing on this. The difference in vertical compliance between carbon and alu rims is 9 human hairs.

The vibration damping of carbon results in lower perceived fatigue for most riders.

At the bottom of this page -- www.noxcomposites.com/wheel_building
  • 1 0
Lab rat bullcrap. Vertical compliance is not the only way rim complies. Aluminium rim twists and deflects sideways without reaching yield point. Article you posted is on another hand the nail to the coffin of argument of people who say carbon rims are compliant if you adjust spoke tension right. ENVE claims their rim shape makes them compliant, which is laughable. ENVE representative told me in the face that they do not do TT type disc wheels (like Bike A-Head), even though they look cool because they would be too stiff. If aluminium rim complies by only a fraction of a milimeter then how come a solid wheel is too stiff?! A bullcrap, but a better one because of high fibre content Big Grin
  • 1 0
Yeah that is true... in the slow motion videos you can see wheels twisting upwards of an inch.

I just threw carbon wheels on my road bike and I noticed that impacts are less comfortable (pot holes) but general road buzz is more comfortable.

I'm sure it depends a lot on the way the material is laid up. You can have floppy carbon or stiff aluminum.
  • 1 0
I cannot comment on road bike as I do not have personal experience. I have a pro roadie in family and he trains only on alu rims saying they are more comfy. He hates carbon saddles but loves the carbon frames and bars though. My only problem with personal opinions (I apply off course) is that for instance this guy hasn't got allen keys at home...
  • 1 0
But carbon bars feel much more comfortable because of better vibration damping and intended flex.
And carbon makes also the better rim material as it stays true while aluminum loses its shape if spoketension weakens.
What spokes did you use to build the wheels? It sounds like an unfavorable combination of parts could be the reason for your poor experience rather than Carbon rims. The best choice would be to use cx-ray or even superspokes to allow the wheels to be more flexible, which should equalize your problems or even improve your experience compared to aluminum rims. Did you already consider this in any way? I also recommend to use brass nippels as aluminum ones have proven to corrode in combination with carbon rims. This should then pretty much result in the perfect wheel.
  • 1 0
Mazze how come spoke can make a difference when confronted with articles written by well informed cycling engineers, specialists? BTW I had Pillar Super Spokes...
  • 1 0
Well I just wanted to go further into detail regarding this topic as I have not owned a set of carbon rims yet, however in theory a stiff rim paired with really elastic spokes allows the wheel best to absorb energy while maintaining true shape.
I am keen to know more about those articles you are speaking of. Also there are lots of engineers who keep doing things the way they were taught to decades ago, being unable to think outside of the box.
Besides, I can imagine many reasons to state fake facts. Last time I checked there were still scientists claiming global warming was a myth... And history has shown that it took some of those cycling engineers you are speaking of like 40years to find out that a 1.5" increase in wheelsize is the true innovation that would change the face of mountainbiking forever.
