Holy Smokes - Lourdes DH Qualifying

Apr 12, 2015
by Nathan Hughes

Take me to church... that was one almighty day in the woods. There was no drama... just all-out war. For want of a more eloquent expression, the Lourdes downhill is absolutely balls-out and if there's one race you cannot miss tuning into this year, it would surely be this. The mad course brought out a French crowd unrivaled by most finals days and a seriously topsy-turvy top 20.

Loic Bruni stamped his seal of French authority on the hill but was hounded to within 1.8 seconds by Remi 'master of savage tracks' Thirion, in his biggest outing on the bike since Andorra 2013. Unbelievably Josh Bryceland smoked his way to within 1/10th of second behind for third, without seeming to break a sweat after his rehab, then came Neko Mulally before an astonishing effort from Dean Lucas for fifth. Fearon, Jones and Fairclough will be in the final 10 to make their final runs and a huge honorable mention goes out to French youngster, Rudy Cabirou for hitting 13th with plate 127! Let's not forget to spell out our credit to 1997 born Laurie Greenland, who would have just missed the elite podium, 4 seconds behind Bruni and ahead of the likes of Troy Brosnan and a mound of established pro bike legends. To top the day off we had Tracey Hannah burn the women's field by over 5 seconds and a collection monster spills, including significant dirt-naps for both elite world champions. Healing vibes go out to all those affected by the violence. Take a look at the madness below and see you for twice as much tomorrow...

Aaron Gwinn has been pushing limits all weekend here with blazing speeds and creative lines and to say he doesn t badly want the win is an understatement. After blowing out a few corners while carrying too much pace in practice in the morning he took a tumble down the gnarliest section of track in his quali run as well. If he can control the speed he has on track we fully expect to see him at or near the top step on race day.

Rocks, roots, road gaps, speed. All perfectly fine. But Cameras on heads, now there's a threat to rider safety!
  • 18 4
Rocks, roots, road gaps and speed are essential elements of the sport. Head cams are a nice addition. If this UCI edict means that headcam placement is taken into account during the helmet design process it might be a good thing for rider health. Although the likelihood is low, I wouldn't fancy crashing at mach chicken only to have my helmet penetrated by a side-mounted action cam.
  • 9 12
Crashing with helmet cams can actually be a hazard. Hard to understand at some
Level by ask F1 legend Michael Schumaker. That poor legend is now a vegetable from a crash where his hero and helmet and tree impacted. Cameras can certainly increase brain injuries severely!! Chest mounted however I can't see much elevated danger?
  • 7 2
I would think a chest mounted camera could have a chance of breaking ribs, puncturing lungs or breaking sternum's; all potentially life threatening things. The sony cams tucked under the helmet visor seem like a good compromise.

If UCI says the cameras attached to riders can be harmeful, could the riders attach the cameras on their bikes?
It's not the same point of view, but better than nothing. (sorry, I didn't read the UCI's statment about the camera, so I don't know what are the rules exactly.)
  • 2 0
they can, but that makes a shit video

Yes, I know. But as I said, better than nothing. I rather to see a shit video of Gwin's full run than keep imagining what he did between split 1 and 2.

I think Gwin will probably win this round, setting him on a roll for the other balls out tracks such as MSA, Val di Sole and Vallnord. He's not on my list of people I want to win but I think he's so good that he'll be unstoppable this year. Remeber how boring it was those two years when he cleaned up at almost every race?
  • 1 1
On closer inspection, that is not Sam's bike. No way. What looked to be flats are Mallet DH.

I seriously cannot believe Ratboy crushed tiny bones in his foot, had multiple surgeries, gave rehab his whole heart and is qualifying so high. I did NOT expect to see him back on the saddle so soon, esp. considering everything ive read on his injury not being fully healed. Can't wait to see what a full 100 bryceland will look like, I've followed his recovery and it was just months ago he posted a pic of him struggling to walk and going through unbearable pain. So proud! And he's having so much fun I can only imagine more time on the saddle will make him more confident. But is he done riding for monster?

Also gutted for Steve smith this season, I imagine this much downtime will kill his career :/

"as an unprotected rider she will not be on the start list tomorrow" Can someone explain what this means?
  • 1 0
She DNFed during quali + not a protected rider = No racing Frown .
  • 2 1
 What is an unprotected rider?

I can't imagine people race w/o insurance.
  • 3 0
 Nothing to do with insurance.

Protected riders are the top 20 riders in points standing (men anyway not sure how far down women's goes) are automatically qualified for the final.

Gee crashed and didn't finish his quail run, if he were not a top 20 protected rider he would not be racing tomorrow. Same with Gwin, DQ'd but he's protected rider.
  • 1 0
Top 20 riders get to race regardless of where they qualify or if they DNF in qualies. Hence... protected.
  • 2 0
protected means they finished in top 20 last season, therefore they are already in the finals. Outside of last years top 20 means quallies are everything.
  • 3 0
I believe it's top 10 for the ladies.
  • 1 0
The top ranked riders are "protected". Gee is ranked in the top twenty men so he's protected. Casey Brown is ranked 11 so it must only be the top 5 or 10 women that are protected.
  • 1 0
