iXS European Championships 2011 - Canceled

by Tyler Maine
Mar 14, 2011

The iXS Sports Division regrets to have to inform you that the iXS European Championships 2011 in Zermatt, SUI (August 27-28, 2011) have had to be canceled.

Despite a firm commitment on the part of the organisers in July 2010 we have now been informed that Zermatt Bergbahnen AG has decided not to hold this important event. The cancellation is at such short notice that iXS SPORTS DIVISION cannot, unfortunately, present a suitable replacement for this high profile occasion.

We continue to be committed to the iXS Downhill Cup & the iXS Dirt Masters Festival for Downhill/4X sport and thank you for your trust and understanding.

Am I the only one who thinks 5-1/2 months isn't that short of notice? Especially, if no one is even thinking about summer at most resorts. Still sucks, just seems weird they couldn't find another venue.

Defo not, Euro Champs was the weekend after the last world cup in VDS and the weekend before the world champs in Champery. most of us will be staying out so it would have to be some where near there

I'm sure there are a huge number of things to sort out and line up when organising an event of that scale, especially considering they dont have a venue, i'm sure its not as simple as most of you think.

5.5 MONTHS is not a long time to organise that sort of event!!! IXS are very experienced and would not back out unless necessary.

this sucks ass though, big time. Euro champs is a bloody good title, and race, and it would have been great to have this after the last race and before the WChamps.

As usual the Swiss lose an occasion to create a good event...most likely for some petty local squabble...someone has probably complained to the forster or they do not want to spoil the pristine and high-profile-jetsetting image of Zermatt with such a 'redneck' event.
Let's move the event to Italy, much cheaper than Zermatt, as beautiful setting and nobody will call the police if you make noise after 10.30pm.
What a pity.

It's not EU, it's a Swiss only policy.
And especially in tourist locations such as Zermatt it's enforced with brutal effectiveness and fines. Bars have signs everywhere begging customers not to make excessive noise that will result in immediate Police intervention.
Switzerland is not the temple of fun unfortunately for young people.

 a) About the track:
Selective, hard tracks are okay. But a track where lots of riders crash badly and one rider ends up paralyzed in a wheelchair (which is what happened to a young woman from Liechtenstein last year and that is defo not cool, mkey?) and where even Nick Beer opts to ride the chicken line more than once is simply irresponsible. And that is not a matter of the size of yer balls, but a matter of sense.

At last year's Swiss championships there was a number of other issues as well, mostly relating to logistics and infrastructure:
- the start of the 4X is way up the mountain - good luck getting the riders and all equipment up there in time
- the place for mobilehomes and the pit lane with its tents is very scarce, last year there was a lack of showers and toilets as well - and that was just the Swiss nationals, not European champs.
- Zermatt is a car-free community, which makes things even more complicated.

b) about finding another location: The date is set, and it's sandwiched between Val di Sole and Champéry's Worlds. That rules out most alternatives like Scotland, Portugal and the likes. Think about travelling and logistics properly before coming up with suggestions, please.

c) about "oh, more than 5 months is plenty of time": not really, European champs need quite some preparation, the courses need to be checked by race commissaires of the UEC - and yes, you can easily double the budget for PR and marketing if you have to restart from scratch.

The cancellation is mainly Zermatt's fault really, as the board of the company operating the cable cars clearly supported the European champs on two occasions in 2010, but changed its position completely in March 2011.

What about Châtel (France), just the other side of the mountain where Champéry is? There are very steep tracks over there!

WTF, there's tons of good bike parks in Europe, sort it out iXS!!! You say that you can't present a suitable replacement for this high profile occasion?? How about stop being so picky! ANY replacement is better than NONE at all, surely? !

the world cup in Schladming last year had been canceled just weeks before it should had been held and it was possible to organize a whole world cup just in a couple of weeks in Leogang. So there have to be other reasons why they cancel this event completely otherwise it would be possible to find some other locations.

Why u don't try here in Portugal in Gouveia where the Maxxis Cup takes place.

They are trying to have an important race like that for years. It's just an opinion.
Hope that i've helped.

A 4meter high and 8meter long roadgap is one thing, but in a +5min racerun and the fact you can pedal only once before, because 4meter behind the landing is a rockgarden, i don't know... it was maybe only the third or fourth biggest jump... friday in training the helicopter came 9 times for the riders. From the 170riders, maybe 120 finished the racerun.
2010 from 4 IXS Swiss Downhill Cup's, 2 was cancelled + the eurocup in Verbier was allthough cancelled.
I know it suck's, no EuroChamps, but belive me, it's better so.
BUT, if ones you want to see the second sickest track in Switzerland, the track has some very cool parts, really f***ing sick big jumps and is allways dry.
Sorry for my english Wink

good point, but there's no fun without the risk in the competition, it's designed to test the best riders in the world so it's got to be challenging
  • + 1
flag Cocolino (Mar 16, 2011 at 13:59)
There is no fun without risk while riding a bike, yes. BUT, Nick Beer (first) did crash in seeding and in his racerun, his brother Marcel broke his wrist in training, Martin Frei crashed 3 times and finished 4th, and from 170 starters only about 120 did finished the racerun, racing is for testing who's the best, not who's the craziest, sickest like at rampage.
And in Friday training maybe 120 riders was there, minimum 9 whered injuried (helicopter has carry 9 persons in one day), I don't think it's good for our sport.
The track is fun to ride, yes, but way to dangerous for a racerun. + the fact of the shitty pits (scott11 could just come with the truck, no tent etc., for EuroChamps there is not enough place...).
