Introducing Airdrop Bikes

Dec 9, 2015
by Airdrop Bikes
Airdrop Bikes is a new independent mountain bike brand based in Sheffield. We're rider owned, small, and we do things our own way. Our bikes are simple, effective and above all, fun to ride.

We develop our own frames in house, refining and testing them on the trails of the Peak. They're hand-made by carefully selected factories. Then they're built to order here in Sheffield using tried & tested components, and shipped direct to your door. It's a bit different but it works. Our first bike is the Airdrop Edit.

The Airdrop Edit

OUR WAY

Too many bikes are designed to sell. That's not the same as designed to ride. Designed to sell means as many features as possible. It means complex linkages and new standards. It means graphics everywhere and pointless three-letter acronyms. It's overkill, and for the most part, it doesn't make the bike better. Our bikes are designed to ride. Sounds simple doesn't it. Everything we do goes into making the bike better, faster and more fun.

We develop our frames in house, and have them made in small batches. We build them to order in Sheffield and ship them direct to customers. This approach is more efficient and saves you money - but even though that’s true, it’s not really why we do it this way. This is the only way we can stay in control of quality and detail at every step, and it means there's a direct connection between the people that ride our bikes and the people that make them.

The Airdrop Edit built with Rockshox Pike RCT3 160 Rockshox Monarch Plus SRAM X1 SRAM Rail 50 Raceface Next SL amp Joystick finishing kit

THE AIRDROP EDIT

Designed from the ground-up, it's a no-nonsense trail/enduro machine that's fast & fun to ride. Geometry is aggressive, with a long front-centre, 66° head angle, 435mm chain stays and a low bottom bracket for that 'in the bike' feeling. There's 150mm of plush, progressive suspension travel from a tried & tested horst-link rear end, 27.5" (650b) wheels and plenty of mud clearance. The spec list is just right. No fancy bells & whistles, nothing complicated or breakable. No marketing rubbish. It's just a great bike to ride.

150mm travel // 27.5" // 1x drivetrain // Tapered headtube // 142x12 // Threaded BB // ISCG05 // Replaceable dropouts

Tom Simpson descending Cadair Idris on the Edit

The idea behind the Edit is to get back to what mountain biking is all about, to keep things pure and simple, with a bike that just works. We’re not here to tell you what to do with it. Build a fast & light trail-centre ripper, a hard-hitting alpine slayer or an Enduro racer. We designed the Edit to be a versatile platform.

Cadair Idris

The Edit’s geometry targets the steepest and roughest sections of trail, giving you extra confidence to go faster. Handling is sure-footed and predictable, so you can forget about the bike and focus on the ride. The frame is stiff, so you can chuck it into corners, load up the tyres and find the grip. There’s plenty of stand-over height so you can move around and stay centred, and the rear end is short enough to manual or pop over obstacles. The suspension delivers 150mm of travel via a Horst Link design, which has been around since 1985. It’s a tried & tested solution which we’ve tuned to balance small-bump sensitivity against big-hit performance. It remains active under braking, and active enough when you’re on the power to maintain traction.

A lot of people talk about the ‘do anything’ bike. That would be a big claim. But the Edit is perfect for the rides we do most often, and a bike you can enjoy for the whole ride. It may be simple, but it’s effective.

I like that a lot , nice to see a brand dealing for the UK market. I know you have Bird, Whyte, Orange ,Empire etc but it's always nice to see the no fuss approach at a low price, ultimately it's about putting a smile on your face and I bet this does

I like the idea and I love the price. Nukeproof have shit a brick with their new Mega pricing. £1350 for a metal frame. Way too high considering the new Capra complete is £1600. This little beauty is right on the money. That linkage says A-Pro to me. Taokas, Vitus, Identiti? I've got one. It's well made and reliable.
  • 3 2
I totally agree with both of you. Especially on the Mega frame price, I was absolutely gutted. No way I'd pay that even though it looks like the best bike available imo. There's just no way I can bend over and take that price!
Transition..?

Still loving my MX6 Evo being honest, also an absolute nutcase of a 150mm frame that's a bargain considering its handmade
  • 2 1
Your really paying for the handmade bit, not a good value direct sales spec really
  • 4 1
Ride one and it'll make sense fella, that high pivot point makes loads of sense
  • 1 0
All these bikes are hand made aren't they?
  • 2 1
The Airdrops? No, think they might be made in the same factories that Planet X use.
  • 1 0
My bad, it does say 'hand-made'.
  • 3 0
I mean, all the Taiwanese factories use actual human welders to make their frames. I think when they say it's built in Sheffield, they mean built up, or assembled. I could be wrong though. I know there are a couple of bicycle frame fabricators in the UK.

Bird is the word my friends. The Aeris is ridiculously good.
  • 1 0
I was excited by then but the geo looks wonky to me. Got some weird hints of oldskool to it, the reach doesn't match the top tube for length for example. That's not the first time I've heard the Aeris is good though so I should maybe try and get a ride on one.

good looks- check up to date angles and features- check awesome value- check Yorkshire- check This bike ticks all of the boxes
  • 3 1
Looks a bit trek/transition not that that's a bad thing plus a bike is bike looking as far as design will allow.

Hopefully being UK designed AND MADE...?
Means less waiting time to get one and replacements.

Other than that, I wouldn't turn my nose up at this over a flippin capra .

After reading the website it seems like they're just designed (and developed) in the UK but made in factories elsewhere.
Doesn't take away the fact that it's a rad looking bike and I'm sure it rides very nicely!

Good looking bikes in a tightfisted mans budget. Get them bought, I'm going to
  • 1 0
Plus if you keep it simple to start - you can always roll out a 29er , a 650b , a press fit bottom bracket & those lethal cut out handlebars at a later date.
  • 3 0
1200 for frame and db air cs great price.what's not to like
  • 2 0
Great to see a new UK bike company. Looking forward to seeing what else they can do!
  • 1 0
Looks very patrol esque.Having said that if something ain't broke why fix it.There'd only so many ways to fit a shock in its most effective way.
  • 1 0
Yeah I mean all bikes nowadays are so damn good that you can't go wrong with any brand. It just means more choice to ummm and arrrr over.
  • 3 4
So nice to see a straight forward, hard hitting, affordable trail rig like this come to the market. "No breakables, No marketing rubbish (just called it carbon fibre it would save some typing)" is great to read for once. This would defintely be a consideration for the future.
  • 7 0
If you rocked up at the airport ready to go on holiday and there was one of them new 787 double decker dreamliner aircraft sat there would you cancel your hols? Seeing as it's made from marketing bs according to you. Genuine question? What's made you so afraid of the stuff?
  • 2 2
Most of it is marketing bullshit on bikes! .You "need" to make an F1 car out of carbon for various reasons including crash safety. You dont "need" to make a bike or bars or cranks or rims out of carbon for a bike to ride amazing. Its all total marketing crap! Anyway i wish Airdrop all the best they deserve to be succesful. They have principles in building bikes that i admire very much. Oh by the way i wouldnt get on one of those planes if it was the last one on earth..they have had shit loads of problems.
  • 3 2
Carbon bars help with my dodgy wrists so I class that as need. The rest is mostly because the bike IS faster and lighter and stronger and more fun to ride because of the carbon parts. Of course I would still ride all metal stuff. But it is more fun to ride my bike with the black stuff. Plus I'm getting old and fat, carrying my bike up helvellyn is a dam site easier when it's 1kg lighter. That's not marketing that's my own decisions. Fair play to airdrop for making bikes for people with different needs and priorities. Although it would be nice of some of the UK company's started to push technology a bit more. We'd all be stuck on steel hardtails if this was done by everyone and id like to see what the UK can do

What put me off is one particular guiding company in spain that put pics up on fb fairly often of guets cf parts breaking. Plus I rarely see a guiding company running cf, some of their temp guides maybe, but not the owners. It may just be the guiding companies I have been with, but they're normally sure to choose parts that last.

Saying "No marketing BS" is in fact marketing BS. They say this thing is "low and slack" when in fact it's the same as any other trail bike out there. And there are many that are lower and slacker. To say "industry standard, plain old 66° and 10mm BB drop and a bit longer than most" would be cutting the BS. We can't expect any company to be our friend, they're in it to make money. I'm almost thinking the three letter acronyms of SRAM and the like are better way of marketing, at least they're not hiding the fact. Sorry Airdrop, you can't win with me ;-) but that's not to say I don't like the bike!

Looks a lot more sexy than an Orange five too
  • 1 0
Frame is made in taiwan Then built up in sheffield. Same old same old .good effort but not quite there yet. Even the new cotic rocket is made in taiwan
  • 2 0
I like this, I like it a lot.
  • 2 0
Good luck to you guys, that is a sorted looking bike you've got there.
  • 3 0
 Looks prime
  • 2 0
shame about the long chain stays as the rest of the geo is spot on.
  • 1 1
 435 ain't long!? Is it?
  • 1 0
 yip
  • 1 0
I see 435 as the perfect medium between stability and playfulness but that's fair enough. Always the case that everything looks cool apart from one bit where you want a bit longer here or shorter there!
  • 1 0
yup. its fit. I'd smash the shit out of it. Id do it in sheffield too seen as its only down the road Wink
  • 1 0
Great looking bike. Hoping to get my hands on one!
  • 3 6
I think you will find its just another redesigned specialized pitch, same as all these new go anywhere bikes had me a sx trail to heavy, commencal absolute, not enough trail performance then a carbon covert good at nothing!!! So decided to sell up get a new 2015 demo to slay in the Alps and bought a second hand pitch with 160 front 150 back offset bushings to get geo smack on the money and I rip that more than anything I have ridden before all hail the pitch lol As for the bike above nice bike but too much money but always will struggle with price making a bike from scratch using uk materials and uk costings to offer it any cheaper as someone above said it has to compete with Capra prices although this is much better platform!!! And it's uk made whoop woop I just wish hope would make a bike now that would be sick!
  • 2 0
The only reason I'm not flying around on a Pitch with offset bushings is my own snobbishness. It constantly get brought up chatting with my buds as an amazing bike but none of us get one because we all 'need' tapered head tubes, through axles etc. The Pitch is pretty long, decent chainstay length, steep ish seat angle. It's light. Insert some off set bushings and the head angle and BB height are nice too. You can pick em up for pennies...what's not to like! Good on you dude!
  • 3 0
 Its not UK made.
  • 2 0
had a pitch with offest bushings in, bets bike ive owned. If only it had tapered ht and bolt thru rear I'd still be riding it.
  • 3 0
My 08 Pitch is still going strong, loving it! Lack of tapered bit of a ball ache mind. Anyway, back to this bike, looks great, no nonsense approach, very promising indeed, good luck fellas!
  • 1 0
Very nice! Good luck to you
  • 2 0
 standard gurn from tom
  • 3 0
 Top notch Tongue Chewing
  • 2 1
It looks like a patrol! Jus saying!
  • 1 0
 Stealth dropper compatible?
  • 1 1
All looks good apart from the slack seat angle means tall riders are going to end up sitting over the back hub....
  • 1 1
Where are you getting that from? Says 70.5 degrees on their website.
TBH it doesnt look like a 70 degree on the photos..

They need to update the website as I wouldn't have taken a second look if you hadn't replied.
  • 1 0
 Looks good to me
  • 2 1
 Looks like a patrol
  • 1 1
That's what I thought - the Airdrop has a higher BB and a steeper head angle. Also has a longer reach and chainstays but it still looks like a Patrol. If you mixed both bikes I that would be awesome I reckon.

 Exciting times!
