Jared Graves - Over a Decade with Yeti Cycles

Dec 14, 2015
by Yeti Cycles
All good things must come to an end. It’s with that bittersweet sentiment that we announce Jared Graves will be leaving the Yeti / Fox team at the end of 2015. After just over a decade of kicking ass on our bikes, all of us here at Yeti Cycles wish him the best future success.

It’s not an exaggeration to say Jared is one of the best bike racers of all time. He’s won world championship titles in 4x and enduro, competed in the Olympics in BMX, won a bronze medal in downhill at the World Championships (on a 6” bike even!), won an Australian national round or two in cross-country, and even beat up on unsuspecting roadies at local pro road races. He’s a machine in turquoise.

He was instrumental in the development of our most recognizable products: the 303 DH, 4x, SB66c, SB5c, and, most recently, the SB6c. When he wasn’t helping us develop products, he was helping us develop talent. Many of our best athletes have benefited from his guidance along the way, including the enormously talented current EWS World Champion, Richie Rude.

So how do you say farewell to an athlete like Jared? You grab a beer and start searching the archives for a slideshow as big as his Yeti career. No surprise, we found some great stuff.

Thanks for the good times, Grubby. You’re going to another team, but we all know you still bleed turquoise.

Excited to see what he does next!

Great for Graves. Just hope Yeti cans his mechanic though. He's a total douche and lazy too.

If Jared Graves does go to Spesh, you can easily see why. I might be wrong, but here goes...

Enduro racing is much more like real world riding than downhill, and I'm sure that the EWS results sell bikes. Heaps of bikes.

Spesh have not done well in Enduro. Spesh does not compete to make up the top ten, they are there to win. The other riders they have had seem like good guys, but have not achieved the results that Spesh would demand. Therefore, Spesh need new talent.

So, who could they get? Most of the top 10 EWS racers are French, and while they are all fantastic riders, a French accent wont sell bikes in the US of A. So, who's left?

Richie Rude is a Young Gun, and Yeti would have died in a ditch to keep him in turquoise. Both Joe Barnes and Greg Callaghan are great riders, but would not build on brand Specialized as a one Mr Graves. Multiple 4X winner, strong competitor in downhill, and EWS winner. He may not win in 2016, but will compete very, very hard, with a preparation that is second to none. He will bring another rider on the team up the rankings. He will speak well but also speak his mind. He will still ride Fox. And, will have good input to he next round of Spesh bikes, where the investment pays off for them.

For Jared? He is now a 30 year old bike racer, in a highly technical disciple. No one lasts forever. I for one, could never blame him for making this move and helping secure his future. Good luck to him I say. He has earned it.
  • 8 2
Why do you think he may not win in 2016?
  • 40 0
30 is no age, graves could be chasing podiums and overalls for a decade. Enduro has proved with correct training and attitude racing at the highest level till the age of 40 is possible
  • 36 11
Spesh ends up with all guys who built their fame elsewhere. Does that apply to their bike as well? They shop around for the best stuff and reap rewards. Capitalists - not really the coolest brand image if it was ever communicated that way.
  • 3 1
He may win, but he may not too. A lot has to go right to win the EWS overall, or to put it another way not much has to go wrong.

And, he has strong competition, from Richie Rude (who Graves has been talking up for some time) and many of the fine French riders who regularly feature in the top ten. All in all he has a good chance, but is no certainty...
  • 3 1
And his brother works in a specialized store.
  • 2 1
you right !!! Curtis Keene can't make good results apparently it's a nice move from specialized .. Beerten's already gone +we don't know yet if gwin or brosnan have other plans fot the future .. specialized must act ..
  • 76 8
It's a good thing he won't be racing DH for them, because that Demo axle path would burn his house down and make him infertile.
  • 16 3
 well played @Protour...
  • 18 4
 @Protour

For what it's worth I was just talking to a bike designer who designed a lot of mass produced frames of all kinds for various companies and He did say that Demo's axle path is indeed a draw back. A little one but still. But having said that I must say that I also saw, in person, Aaron and Troy riding and I can assure everyone that even if they had a pivot at the height of the bottom of the chain ring, world stands no chance. At least right now and Especially Gwin. I watched top 10 riders on what looked to me like the steepest, longest and harshest rock garden of the whole Val Di Sole track and his upper body was leveled as if he was riding on smooth surface. The bike seemed bouncing on very tops of each bump with little effect on fore/aft pitch. It seemed as if his bike was cutting through everything, as if rocks were made of soft loam lying around

Nevertheless: Demo will make your dick fly off
  • 9 0
@WAKIdesigns I'm no Gwin and I need a bike with a higher pivot.

@beerhunter isn't Minaar like 35, and he was the closest person to win the overall after Gwin, with a broken hand in the offseason and velcroing his hand onto the bars for Lourdes?
  • 6 5
Off course you do Hamncheez, it's free market, you simply buy a different bike. How's your Zerode order doing? Good looking, 26/275, high pivot, long stays and no rear mech, cheaper than S-works Demo, made in place where it is designed. What else can a rational man want? So - what do you ride?
  • 1 0
 @beerhunter
He is switching to Sram and Rockshox.
The new Enduro has been ready for a while.
  • 3 1
Wow, what a theory! I don't think it is really that safe for a manufacturer to sign a rider so successful. Maybe for Specialized in particular. If he's doing as well as he used to, people will go like "sure, it is a great rider, no matter what bike he's on". If he goes through a less successful period, people will be like "Jared used to be amazing on Yeti but apparently Specialized bikes are so bad that even he can't podium anymore". If he becomes more successful than he already was with Yeti, well he can't be much more successful than that can he? I think this counts for Specialized in particular as obviously they already had some great riders on their team who had great results on their previous team and went through a bit of dip with Specialized. I'm thinking about Hill and Gwin here.

I'm not discussing the actual quality of the bikes here. Riders have done well on several of their bikes last season so they shouldn't hold anyone back that much.
  • 2 1
@WAKIdesigns sold the DH bike! just petty all mountain riding for me
  • 2 0
@vinay Gwin did great last season imo, this season with Spech might've not been as mint as it was when he ran with Trek, but you have to consider that there are new boys in town which were not top level back when he was in trek, Ratboy, Bruni, Troy, just to name a few.
I do see Spech signing with Jared, I am actually interested on what Engineering Changes he might propose for the Enduro. I guess it will be worth waiting a couple of years before I replace my Stumpy.
  • 10 0
At his level, its the rider not the bike. Same level that allows Yoann Barelli to ride a CX bike down whistler A-Line as he laughs at us on our big bikes as we complain that we need even bigger bikes.
  • 6 5
Vinay - that makes little sense sorry, sure - such risk exists but it is much smaller than hiring any faster dude. With Graves you get a high chance of getting that bike on top of the podium, into cameras, with dude like Joe Barnes - not really. You want to maximize your chance of getting up there, not worry what if. How can you get anywhere with such attitude? Risk assessment is only a small part of every business and isn't exactly a creative sector. Yes you can run into trouble but you have to stay optimistic. Now for the part that interests Pinkbikers not potential buyers: Hill had an injury from which he still hasn't recovered, caused by nothing else but going flat out, over the limit for 4 years or more, which for instance guys like Minnaar never do anymore. Gwin changed a whole bunch of sponsors and also his coach. All his training routine and peace of mind giving sponsor relations went out of the window. Go change a job, whatever you are doing, and show me how well you are doing from day one. I can buy the fact that Demo was a part of it but c'm on.
  • 3 0
Also the same level that allows Gwin to win on a "unridable" bike, win with no chain, and go faster than all of us without a rear tire.
  • 1 0
Didn't mean to say that it I think like that, that the bike is bad because these riders had some poorer results than what they had previously. And yes Sam Hill did win the worlds on the bike even when he spent most of the season sidelined because of injury. Gwin had an amazing season. I just recall I read many posts on PB like that, be them wrong or not. And if PB visitors have such an impression about a brand, well these are the potential customers. I'm glad to hear I'm wrong there though.

And yes, you're right that Graves will probably podium at the very least and that will get them exposure. Specialized should get that exposure bit sorted though. Anneke Beerten won loads last season, not to mention the podiums she got. It just didn't appear on the Specialized front page of their website. That said, I'm from The Netherlands and her wins and titles didn't make it to the newspapers either, not even the fine small lists at the edge of the sports pages. Mountainbiking results in the newspapers implied XC results, cycling implied road cycling. BMX racing does make it, but 4X and enduro results just didn't make it to the newspapers. So if Graves is doing well (or any of their riders for that matter in any of these less mainstream disciplines), Specialized should really decorate their website.
  • 3 5
Now that you say that, yea it sucks! She was a Queen of Crankworx for forks sake. I met her in Val Di Sole with her hubbie Bas De Bever. Super cool guys. Here I must add that Spec tent was super cool and that team rips, such nice people! Very friendly and chilled out atmosphere which cannot be said about few other teams. Not much wrong about it but Syndicate tent seemed a bit like a golf club Wink GT like F1 team, kind of bore at Schwalbe Giant, and South Park Hippie Festival at Masters Bros... Really Spesh folks are nothing like some Pinkbikers paint them. At least they float my boat Wink
  • 5 0
@Vinay You know that Sam Hill won the World Cup title his first year with Specialized in 2009 right? As well as World champs the next year too after being injured most of the season. I would Hardly call that a form dip.

  • 1 0
Vinay I think one huge aspect you are overlooking is that while Graves is an older rider that could regress some, they would also be getting a master of r&d to help them build a new Enduro over the next few years that would guarantee sales with his stamp of approval on it. I know I would be interested.
  • 1 0
He already rode the new Enduro and he really likes it.

 Cody Kelly to yeti?!
  • 1 0
@sontator while recently that's true for Hill & Gwin,, that's not really true for Troy, Mitch, or Brendan who were all brought on as mentoring projects. No doubt Specialized wants to have the big names, but that isn't always their aim.

  • 5 0
So the Yeti DJ is a better 4x bike than the Yeti 4x?
  • 1 0
still trying to chase down one of graves' superX frames!!
  • 8 6
That 2015 Factory Yeti in Blue/Yellow is one of the sickest and most racy looking bikes out there. For me it is as Iconic as M3 or V10.2 when Rennie was on board. Companies should sport distinctive paint jobs for their top racers at top events. Exclusivity adds value to the whole thing. Once you get Peatys signature TLD helmet, you may as well wear TDF leaders Jersey on local road race.
  • 1 0
@gavlaa Don't know the numbers but my hunch is he won far more on the DJ than the 4X model.
  • 24 1
Graves will always be a yeti rider to me and he will continue the yeti brand because he taught Richie
  • 11 6
In a couple of years this will sound like saying that Aaron Gwin will always be a Yeti or Trek rider.
  • 3 0
Same here man, he got me into to dreaming of yeti bikes. I'm in actual shock right now that him and yeti/fox have broken up. I'm going to take this very hard, graves I thought you'd be the one that would never leave. Can't not see you in that yeti blue......
  • 5 5
Any goodwill towards Yeti that Graves built with me was lost with that "oh it's actually a pre-production prototype - that's why the frame broke" fiasco last year.
  • 3 0
Like Danny, he always will be on Giant for me ...
  • 2 1
@cherouvim but Gwin did not race for Yeti or Trek for 12 years.
  • 16 0
Nooooooooooooo! Graves off yeti, is like peaty off Santa Cruz. Easily my favourite rider, closely followed by peaty. All the best Jared!!!!
  • 7 0
It might seem hard to imagine him not riding a Yeti at the moment, but to do with the point you just brought up about Peaty, He's been with SC for a decade, but people forget he rode for Orange before that, and GT before that, and didnt he even ride for Saracen at one point in the early days? I bet money that by the time the 2016 season is done, Jared and his new team will seem completely normal, especially with that #1 plate back on his bike for 2017 I hope Smile
  • 2 0
In my mind, I still think Peaty fits best on an Orange, Hope brakes and RS suspension. Even while currently on SC he comes across as British through and through. Some Middleburn and Renthal wherever applicable would suit him well. Not that I ever expect it to happen, but I could easily see him riding different stuff than he does now.
  • 2 0
Remember when Orange came out with a floating brake? They said Peaty didn't have it on his bike because he didn't use brakes.
  • 1 0
If I recall correctly he grooved out his pads to make them less grippy. Modulation has become better with the modern brakes so I don't think he still does it.

As for the floating brake, it doesn't get much love nowadays but I always thought it was a clever way to be able to taylor how the brake interacts with the suspension. No matter how much you lean back, the fork will always dive a little if you decelerate due to braking. Especially on a steep descend. That, or you have some nifty low speed compression damping taking care of that or you have a fork layout that cancels it like what USE used to make. I actually appreciate that on such a single pivot system (like his Orange or my Cannondale Prophet) you can feather the rear brake to compress the rear suspension a little so that the bike stays level. People who are heavier on the rear brake may feel that it compresses too much and may use a floating brake to change it a little. Apparently Peaty was happy with how it behaves. Or he was indeed not using it Smile .
  • 11 0
The rumor mill was strong with this one, and despite the evidence, I hoped it wasn't true. It's not often you have an athlete seem so ingrained within a brand. Regardless, I don't want to get off of the Gravey train! Looking forward to an epic Graves, Rude showdown next season!
  • 12 4
I do believe you mean Gravey boat.
  • 12 0
Was hoping the rumors weren't true, the big S finally got what they needed in enduro!
  • 6 1
I hope they continue "On track with C̶u̶r̶t̶i̶s̶ ̶K̶e̶e̶n̶e̶ Jared Graves"
  • 3 1
"Back on track" with J Graves you mean
  • 1 0
Why not both Graves and Keene? Mosely's retired, maybe the big T...
  • 6 0
WHAAAT it's gonna be WEIRD for him to pass from an epic bike which is at 130% technologicly speaking (SB66C, fox infinity etc..) to a "regular" two suspensions bike !!! What's even more weird, it's that Jared was the guy who advertised the whole new concept thing and loved it and all.. so now if he leaves .. just weird
  • 6 0
Great opportunity for both Richie and Jared. Richie now gets to be top dog for Yeti and if all goes well build on top of an already great start to an awesome career that could last just as long if not longer than Jared's with Yeti. And as for Jared, well shit no matter where he goes that company is going to be paying some big money for him.
  • 7 0
Going to be tough not seeing him in Yeti colors. Has to be the best Yeti racer in company history, won in multiple diciplines. By far my favorite rider of all time.
  • 8 4
If the rumors are true and he goes to Specialized it'll be a shame, I really enjoy watching guys who ride for the smaller brands compete against the manufacturing giants. Props to Graves though id love to see him win on any bike, all round beast.
  • 4 2
Does Yeti count as a smaller brand at this point? Medium sized at least.
  • 1 0
I would think so, Yeti has a strong position in the high end mountainbike market, but companies like Specialized, Giant and Trek are pumping out millions of bikes a year in various disciplines and price points. Not to mention the other brands those manufacturers build bikes for. A company like Merida is probably turning over 3 or 4 times as much as Yeti.
  • 1 0
I think they are 25 employees totally World wide..
  • 1 1
@Drybear maybe if you don't count factory workers or reps
  • 1 0
Factory workers would technically be subcontractors I believe.
  • 5 0
Talented. Aggressive. Humble. Confident. Also one of the nicest blokes you'll meet.

All the best next season Jared. (Your "boot sale" wheels are brilliant, thanks mate).
  • 5 0
I am sure Jared is looking at all the comments and laughing at what people say. All the best for him and his new bike, see you in round one or before here in chile....
  • 4 0
Jared after climbing a few transition stages with you at the SEQ GE series I can confirm you are a gentleman of the sport. All the best with your future endevours and the 2016 EWS.
  • 2 0
I got my SB66 (and don't want to let it go) in part due to Jared Grave's success with the bike. Yeti's racing pedigree is top notch, and when you ride their bikes you can see why. Best of luck and I'll keep rooting for Jared even if he does end up in a S bike.
  • 3 0
And now the real question...... will he ride an E29 or the 27.5?!?!? Would love to hear his thoughts after getting some time on both compared to the seemingly invincible weapon that is SB6.
  • 2 0
That's a good question. I would venture to say that the 29 fits his point and shoot style more but then all the 4x background would point him to a smaller wheel size. If there gonna redo the enduro they would probably put it on 27.5 wheels witch would mean he would ride 27.5. We will see
  • 3 0
I'm going to call it now... If Graves by chance has an off year next season and doesn't win, everyone on pinkbike will become a bike engineer and blame the specialized enduro.
  • 17 15
I would like to see Jared write more in the comment section. I want to argue with him! I'm sure I could twist many arguments so that he would not be able to use his expertise!

I would like to see you try and follow him down (or up) a hard section. Without bothering to comment, his expertise would bring your twisted arguments to an end Smile

I wonder if Jared came in with enough time to provide rider input on the design of the all-new 2016 Enduro. Or will the first couple of races be the testbed for a prototype?
  • 3 0
Wouldn't have thought so. As much as this would have been in the works for a while he only got his first shipment of bikes around October. Small hometown, word gets around.
  • 1 0
The Enduro isn't new for 2016.. But, it seems that we might see a new bike for 2017. .

  • 2 0
Is it $$ that drive these kind of moves? Can't be a performance issue. He'll be great on whatever he rides. Best of luck to you.
  • 2 2
Kudos to Yeti for the professional sendoff. Pardon my rant but the trails are too muddy to ride and as a result I'm grumpy.

If he goes to Specialized I hope he can motivate them to figure out how to design a bike that doesn't blow up its rear shock like the current Enduro. I'm on Cane Creek shock #3 and won't be surprised when this one bites the dust. To me, the move to a custom Ohlins proves this is a known issue. Whether its the leverage ratio, fixed yolk, or lack of pixie dust, it doesn't matter.

I had a Twitter exchange with @themasterlink (their tech twitter account) where they said "We have had a positive experience with most manufactures using our shock design". So they are using riders for trial and error? Instead of owning it they are waiting for the owners to destroy shocks before doing something. This isn't the kind of experience I expected from Specialized and in my opinion they should: issue a recall and not sell current 2015 stock with the DBInline.
  • 2 2
The frame design that has a shock yoke without a lower pivot/ bushing is the flaw. The lateral flex of riding is transfered directly to the shock shaft, all the oscillation that a bushing would normally deal with, which pushes the shocks main seals in a way that they are not really designed to cope with. End state the rear shock blows up, everyone blames the shock manufacturer (have a look at how many "my Inline blew up again" threads are out there and look at what frames they are "blowing up" on, where as in reality the frame manufacturer should be paying for those warranty re-builds due to poor design.
  • 2 1
@amrskipro I'd be reluctant to make a blanket statement about the design for ALL Specialized bikes since 2010 (I think when they started this fixed yoke design). There have been thousands, if not tens of thousands of FSR's from Camber's to Stumpy's and Enduro's used without this issue. My theory is that once travel was pushed to 165mm and adapted to 27.5, the issue was created in some cases. Interestingly the DB Inline is marketed towards 120-150mm bikes and the DB Air for bikes up to 175. They put the wrong shock on the bike. Yet they continue to sell them and have their owners (and shops) go through the process of warrantying a known issue. Cane Creek on the other hand shouldered responsibility and offered me an upgrade to the DB Air CS.

The silence from Specialized on this issue is disappointing and has caused me to reflect on all of the Specialized haters...maybe they are right?
  • 2 0
I think the reality is Spec try to tweak other manufacturer components to often....I've been on the wrong end of it myself but I guess they would argue they are trying to push the envelope or provide something more exclusive...

Cane Creek must have signed off on using the In-Line on the Enduro being satisfactory .............I think its fair to say Spec and CC probably got the DB in-line wrong. Does anyone know how the Monarch Plus is working out on the 2016 non-Ohlins bikes??? That might give an additional insight on the lateral flex issue...

I cant see an all new enduro until its been fully developed... but no doubt they will modify the existing one for boost and swap the pike for a lyrik for stiffness. No doubt there will be a fattie version!

@Travel66 That's a valid point. With all of the growing competition differentiation probably makes a difference. The issue with coming out with a new design every 2 years is we end up really being the testers. I'd trade minimal performance for a reliable bike that I can thrash without worry. Imagine if you were to buy a Toyota that was blowing up shocks. Would they proactively issue a recall or wait for failure and blame the manufacturer? I understand not taking accountability over some parts, IE suspension fork, but the shock is an integral part of the bike. For me it was a deciding factor for the purchase.

My next bike purchase will be with a company more concerned with durability than market share.

@Ryan83 I just want Spec to get it right as they seem to be the only manufacturer intentionally making bikes with geometry for big guys!

What I don't get is why they don't push ahead with consistency...... Why redesign the stumpy and put a 142 rear axle on the 29 and 650 but use the latest boost 148 on the 650 plus fattie??

Damn, this is just like in 1987 when Eddie Fiola left GT. He was last seen riding on a contraption called the CitiBike.

Canyon? Jared to replace Fabien Barel...
  • 8 1
Definately not Canyon, Hehas signed with Specialized and is developing their new bikes with them, He has put a 180mm Lyrik fork on a Enduro and a 160mm pike on the Stumpy. His arsennal for the 2016 season is already in his garage.

Turqouise colored Enduro and Stumpy? ????

If rumors are true the second gen Enduro 29 will be the death of MTB as we know it. I want to see this trail devouring monstrosity ASAP. Keith from Banshee was right all along. Steve Jones must be having wet dreams already

There is no second gen, just tweaks.....Boost, Lyrik, slightly longer CS

I had at least 4 bikes that were great. Until I bought the 2015 650b Enduro ... it doesn't ascend well and the wheels (yes Roval) are of poor Quality for a bike with that potential. The DH side of it is great.
I hope they find a good rider (Graves?) to improve the bike and make a decent 650b model

vhdh666 - All bikes from Spec (Epic29, Enduro26, all sorts of Stumpies and many too old to be wroth mentioning) that I tried were more than legit, with superbly tuned Stumpy Evo29 being probably the best bike I have ever ridden. (please note - I am just a stupid PB user pretending that I rode more bikes than Steve Jones - no I haven't ridden many bikes, and had quality time on even fewer Wink ) But I haven't ridden the Enduro 650B. I am a fanboi nonetheless

Aaah, let the man do what he wants with his future. I could see the big s being a great way for him to make more money and ensure his future in the biking industry.

Why not, I for one would love to see a series of videos with him and Matt Hunter, whoohooo! Also we should be more supportive of our Pro athletes, they are not football players that makes ludicrous amount in sponsorship. We also can't assume Jared's reason for making the move.

Why all the hate for Specialized? I had a SX Trail 1 2011, and really like the bike! Also the Enduro seems to be one awesome bicycle...

I've had a Yeti t-shirt for the past 2 years which is now too knackered to wear. Where's my video?
