Pro Skier KC Deane is a relatively new to the world of freeride. KC grew up racing XC as a teenager, but got out of biking and centered his life around skiing. Since then KC has traveled the world skiing, filming and shooting. He has been featured in many ski movies, magazines and publications. In 2012 KC wanted to bring biking back into his life and felt that his big mountain skiing could translate into big mountain biking. A year before we filmed this edit KC bought his first freeride bike and set his goals high. Here is what KC had to say:

bigquotesJust over a year ago I went to Red Bull Rampage. I remember standing amongst friends and all sorts of people that came together to watch it all go down. Standing with everyone and listening to people say how nuts this all was, all I could think was "this looks like so much fun... I may not be able to do this right now, but I want to ride this terrain and start free riding." A year later I was back last fall at Rampage helping my friends Mark and Mitch dig for the contest. Since I couldn't ride for qualifiers, after spending all week digging and riding I couldn't wait to ride the venue. After the dust cleared and the wood features were torn down, Steve Lloyd and I went back and filmed this edit. It was awesome to go ride one of the best zones in the world. A lot of people think of Rampage as the best riders in the world coming together, but not only does it bring the best riders but some of the best trail builders in the world. I couldn't have been happier to be able to ride lines and features that everyone came together to build. - KC Deane

Now I have no excuse not to get good at jumping!!
  • 144 3
Me neither.... except for skill, ability, balls, location, weather, age, injuries, bike, helmet, body armour, gloves, shorts, top, and shoes. I do have the socks for it though. Yup, I have the socks to be able to do this.
  • 25 0
@bigtim - I have nothing to add to your extensive list except that I may also have the valve stem caps for this. What kind of socks do you ride with?
  • 13 0
atleast you guys have socks to hit that. i crash even in my dreams when i pretend to ride that
  • 4 1
He broke his neck in 2010 so you can strike injuries off that list, bigtim Wink

But really though, it's insane how good he is at both sports and also how quickly he seems to be progressing at big mtn. mtbing. I hope he gets invited to the Rampage. It could be very interesting.

@scott-townes He'll need to learn to trick every one of those huge drops, first.
  • 1 0
Was thinking more along the lines of finding creative ways down... although the area seems scoured as is. Or maybe like Hopkins, he'll just send it huge. The tricks I wouldn't put past him, however, seeing how good he is already even though he's only been riding this stuff for a few seasons.

It's a bit premature for a Rampage invitation, don't you think?
  • 4 0
@scott-townes thank you for bringing up Mike Hopkins, lets not forget that we have seen a free-skier place 6th at rampage. KC deserves credit for having some serious stones, but it's not super unique to be good at two or more sports. Semenuk races rally, and I know Aggy is a pretty deadly snowboarder....they are good athletes.

bhd13- If things keep going, I don't think so at all. Think of the people who were invited that couldn't even put a run together. Getting used to the terrain and being able to ride the venue is a massive advantage. He definitely wouldn't be a bad choice by any means.
  • 1 0
@gordie10 @scott-townes. Or you could be Travis pastrana nascar racer. Pro moto rider nitro circus. Baja racer and amazing box and trycle. Rider also a great wake boarder
  • 2 1
not to mention he was one of the potentially greatest moto-x riders of all time. I don't know how it got to that but definitely recommend watching the two documentaries on Pastrana. If Shaun Palmer is the first coming of Jesus, Pastrana is the second coming.
  • 2 1
@scott-townes: No, dude. You are dealing with premature e-speculation. It happens to lots of people, so don't worry. To help ease your over-excited state, try thinking of baby seals being clubbed or watch some short crash vids on pinkbike.

Putting a run together: you think KC has more reps than the guys that were invited to compete and built/practiced their line? If more experienced professional freeriders were having a hard time, what do you think will happen when KC has to go bigger than he ever has with everyone watching? He's going bigger than a lot of amateur guys are, but to compete in the Rampage 2 years after starting to freeride is a bit ambitious IMO.
  • 5 0
You're getting a bit overworked here... which is really weird.

I never claimed he had more "reps". I know he has had more experience riding in this kinda terrain than more than a lot of the people who were invited to ride... if you think otherwise, you're plain ignorant to how some of the top riders spend most of their time. This is a big mtn. mtb comp, that is all. And who is to say that this edit is representative of the biggest stuff he's sent? If anything an edit is a snapshot of how that rider is in that given time. Based on that, I'd have to say he's progressing really quickly and handling gnarly terrain that 99% of riders would never consider. You haven't been paying much attention or you have way too high of expectations of this dude, either way, chill out. It's just mtbing.
  • 1 2
I don't follow your logic, but I've been told I'm plain ignorant and probably haven't been paying much attention. I think your expecations "way too high", and that's my point. I don't have any "expectations of this dude." You think he's ready for Rampage, I don't. Could he eventually be? Maybe.

But, I'll defer to the Captain of Pinkbike.

Lol this is going to deep n the comments r too long let's just leave it at the fact that he is an amazing rider cause he really id

Awesome job KC and Steven!! Looked like you were having fun out there!!

 Thanks Brett!
  • 1 1
Wow completely impressed with this! Awesome video and some incredible skills. Makes it look so nice and flowy for not riding very long, man that is the natural talent everyone wants!! Keep it up!
  • 11 0
@policemanjim - I don't know what your level of riding is, but to call anyone who can ride those lines, and hit up those gaps and drops, shit is a bit out of order. He may not have the fluidity of Cam Zink and co., but that is some full on terrain and needs some serious skills to get down never mind hitting some serious gaps and drops on the way.

"the fluidity of Cam Zink" ROFLMAO. Yeah Zink is so well known for his fluidity. Even Strait makes fun of him because he crashes so much. Yeah yeah how about that smooth & fluid "run" he did last year at Rampage? Or the one from the Rampage before that, so packed top to bottom with flow & steez, yeah it was so laminar brah, that's what Zink is known for, fluidity. Hahaha pffffft.

This guy in the video, Deane, yeah he just packed more shreddin' of the Rampage site into a 3 minute edit than I've seen Zink do in his whole career. A few big flips & spins does not a fluid rider make. Good rider sure, but "fluid"? Bah.
  • 1 1
 wow so many zink fanboys
  • 1 1
I think you guys are missing the point of my comment; to call the guy (KC) shit is out of order. When I refer to the fluidity of Zink "and Co." I'm referring to the Pros who build lines and ride the Full Rampage course at the event, he's not in that league yet. Considering he's only been riding a year I think what he's shown in this edit is very impressive.
So hahaha pfffft the f*ck off!!

that's l;ike saying you are not god yet.

Redbull might not have another rider to consider here, but they probably have a cameraman to consider.
  • 13 0
Some peoples natural talent just amazes me.. One year on a free ride bike and he hits some of the scariest lines on earth.
  • 12 1
made even better by The Misfits...
  • 1 2
I love that song, but I don't think it was the best for the edit.
  • 1 0
 Newfits are not the Misfits.
  • 8 1
There's no way zink or any others could go up to AK and crush spines and look good doing it so what KC did is pretty rad in my books
  • 5 0
Amazing to me, especially knowing he hasn't been on a bike for very long. He took all the gnarliest lines off the top - scary, scary shit. @Superfly - it absolutely justifies its own post. I agree with a few others, some of the lines that competitors took were not nearly as scary as the stuff KC rode for this edit - granted, KC had multiple takes and better weather, but I am guessing he did not have a medical team waiting to assist.
  • 8 0
Ridiculously smooth riding! Makes Rampage look easy!
  • 1 0
Glad he didn't hit the Canyon gap nor the Oakley Sender, else Redbull gotta find a new gnarlier spot.
  • 5 0
They don't leave the wood features up year round...
  • 1 0
You could bring your own moto ramp like this guy: www.pinkbike.com/video/299235
  • 4 0
Oh yeah, zee KC might be a rad ass rider when he's actually on the bike. But I've heard his hike-a-bike skills are highly questionable. Hahaha.
  • 1 0
the dude just recovered from that injury, you really have to do this?
  • 1 0
Dude, relax. It was a friendly joke. I was in Fruita with KC a few days after he smashed his finger. It was really impressive that he managed to ride his bike at all that week, let alone work hard in front of the camera despite being in a lot of pain and his left hand all wrapped up.

 Props

With a name like KC Deane, it's no wonder he excels at everything rad. Solid edit and riding.

  • 3 0
Love by the mountain, die by the mountain

Reminds me of the older footage where the cameras were so much closer to the rider than in recent years. Love it!
  • 2 0
wow that was awesome, good to see someone out there goin big with no one els, or a venu to ride in!
  • 1 0
That was awesome. He does make it look easy. And those drops probably are. We've all hit them. Just gotta nut up, go bigger and land it.
  • 2 1
do they take out all the wood stuff? like the oakley sender, canyon gap, etc?
  • 1 0
Just add a few tricks like a suicide no-hander and he's got a ticket to rampage!!
  • 2 0
Geil, rampage without rampage :-) But i miss the Oakley Sender :-P
