Kicking Horse Bike Park Trail Crew Update 3 2014

Jul 28, 2014
by Steve Crowe
The straight goods on Kicking Horse Bike Park, straight from the trail crew's fingertips.

Since the last update, when I promised that we will be going gangbusters on completing Swamp Donkey, our next trail, we have been going gangbusters. But we haven't completed it yet! Oh, it is tantalizingly close, but we must beg your patience just a while longer. We need moisture before we can continue, and we haven't been granted a budget sufficient for controlling the weather yet.

Even finaller stages of the process.

The rest of the park is riding really well right now because of the recent rains. Now it looks like nothing but sun for a few days. Blaster had the first of three reroutes completed and should be open for your riding enjoyment.

The Kootenay Rockies Enduro and the Western Open races went off and now they are done. With no more events except weddings and twoonie races left, the place is all yours. While you are up here make sure you check out our latest release: Dragon Chaser. This green alpine trail is designed to meander around the meadows so you can maximize your time in this amazing zone. If you have skills, you can pump the willikers out of this one. The video below shows Richard Ozsust trying to spread willikers all over the heather. The video is grainy due to the smoothcam application. Instead of poo-pooing the image quality, woo-hoo the image stability!

Looking for the fast entrance to Dragon Chaser.

Remember to come get lessons to help you tame the Horse. We are open all August, then Fri-Sun all September. Lots of time for you to come up still.
Ride on, Crowe

Shop of bike joy.

Here is an edit from last September when the bike park crew linked 3 nearby peaks in an revelry of biking glory. It's not all soul-crushing drudgery up here.

Watching trail crews using two men to drag a vibration tamper uphill looks painful. My local BMX track owns something like this:

www.brandt.ca/Divisions/Tractor/Products/Pages/Product.aspx?cat=Products&pid=BW55+E_001%28Brandt%29

Trail compaction just became a one man job.

Now you have to go and harass management for more money Smile

it looks great, but you probably have to stay on a flat ground... ???

No, like I said, my BMX track has one which they use for compacting the entire track, including all features (tables, doubles, whoops, etc.) The things are self-propelled, so they should work perfectly on machine built trails.

not sure this machine could work in half camber section, or uphill....
that's why we also use the vibration tamper...

that's what we make in france...

I would assume they would use gravity to help them instead of fighting it when they can. Those little ones are not terribly heavy especially with two people with tag lines and one pushing from bottom. I guess it depends how steep of a grade you are working onSmile

Looks like a lot of work going into the mountain, hopefully I can make it out for a few laps before the season is through!
Keep it up!!!!
