Mike Kinrade's Summer of Contour

by Mike Kinrade
Nov 2, 2010

Technology has done some amazing things for biking, and one of the coolest is the ability for us to now film and watch what the rider sees with his/her own eyes.

This is an edit dedicated to all the fun that we have with our friends out on the trails!

It's unmistakable that the best thing about mountain biking is shredding with friends, and the best thing about having these mini HD cameras is being able to record it with no effort, watch it later with a few beers, and share it with the rest of the world. Here's an edit that Tamas Forde and I put together from footage of myself out shredding with my friends through out this past summer.

Anyway the vid is great!

me too, i think the chest mount gives a smoother video. but on the other hand, they ride some really rough stuff so...

 Hey everyone. Kinrade here,

I'm going to write this now because I think you are making uneducated comments about the quality of this camera. I looked at other GoPro footage on pinkbike here and I don't see how you think it's better. My camera has different setting, shot in different light (like dark trees, in the forest, and overcast skies) I would ask that you all make more educated comments before just saying one is better. I've used GoPro's, they are nice but I went with Contour because they mount easier, are lighter, and don't stick out the side of your helmet as much. After cips have been compressed, edited, re compressed, and then resized to become an edited version things do change. FYI 1:27 was shot on a GoPro.

You can also check other CONTOUR footage here and compare

well said. I don't think GoPros are as good as everyone thinks. for 1080 HD the quality isn't that outstanding

These clips were also shot in 720p mode, not 1080

It appears that your sponsored by Contour so your comments are really biased. I think you went with Contour as they paid you either in form of product or cash. If your not sponsored by them, good for you that you like Contour and promoting them. I'm sure they make good products.

dude are you sponsored by manitou AND elka? one for fork, one for shock or what?

i've used both now and can vouch for the contour's quality being awesome, but out of the box they are less versitile and the mounts are pretty cheesy.

ps, howcome in the ??? segment, it cuts out before the roadgap? that shit is so smooth!

My contour full HD version is great, except the mounts are crap. Go pro's are far more advanced in my opinion..

If I got a free countour, i'd sell it and buy a Go Pro lol

The Go Pro gives better quality/crisper videos compared to the Contour, usually.

i wouldnt say no if someone offered me one, i just think the co pros video is better quality, but the coundtour does fit better onto the helmet, the go pro sticks out pretty far

I'm sure they are both the same quality, The contour looks like it mounts better. GoPro's lok like you have a small toaster oven glue to your helmet Smile

@david New mounts coming out this week that will make the Contour much more stable. Look for more info on the "profile" mount coming out soon!

when a gopro is mounted on top of your helmet it makes you look like a teletubby...its worth it for the quality tho

W/r/t video quality, let me speak on behalf of the Contour. It shoots in several different settings, frame rates, bit rates, etc just like lots of other helmet cams (Full 1080, 960, 720...) The overall look and feel of the footage depends on whichever workflow you choose to use to obtain the quality image you desire, in both production and post production. If you want to convert without any data loss use Apple Intermediate Codec at the file's original frame rate and resolution.

We are stoked that Mike shot his video with a Contour and we think it's awesome. We hope that whatever camera you choose to use you love it, use it, and make great videos. After all, that's what it's all about.

In my opinion, the GoPro footage is far superior. Seems to be the general consensus in most 3rd party reviews too, hence the reason I went with GoPro. That being said, I have yet to be able to replicate the quality of all of these professional videographers. Such a pain trying to get all of the right editing/upload settings. Still looks great though.

And no offense but the Contour mounts are whack...my buddy spends half the time fussing with his camera and mounts. I just mount and go! Smile Not to mention that the controls on the Contour are impossible. I freaking popped the back off on it 3 times trying to start it on my helmet (though I am a bit of a spaz).

i dunno about the other things ur talkin about. but the controls on the contour are soooo simple u'd need to be a "spaz" to not be able to work them. and remember loook on utube at videos in actual hd quality when comparing, pb seems to make them look pretty shit..

flag rockandride6 (Nov 2, 2010 at 13:20)
Yeah, super simple (such that you can not change many settings) but the back always pops off. When I would reach up to slide the little thing, that back would always pop open. Maybe I had an unusually "loose" latch on the one I rented, but it was still a PITA.

Buyer beware on Contour. I have on of their original vholdr cameras and I have had issues with it from day one. They had me send the camera back to them twice and I still have the same issues of my videos coming out choppy. Contacted them two weeks ago about it however now they won't support my product since it is over a year old.

The picture quality on my contour is very good, not blue ray standard ok. I have edited a few bits and transferred it to a standard dvd on my mac, then played back through a PS3 via my 50Hd pioneer plasma and the results are amazing for such a little sensor.I like many others prefer them to the go pro. My only gripe is the lengths i had to go through to aquire a good view..
