One Wheel - Kootenay Style

by Tyler Maine
Nov 24, 2009

I've been talking to young Mike Parenteau over the course of this past season as he continually tries to convince me how rad riding on one wheel is (and I'm not talking wheelies here). When I think about Unicycles, I think circus acts and "that kid" that seems to be in every town who can actually ride one. By ride one, I mean on the street, not in a technical manner. Mike and his good buddy Kenny Banks have proven this stereo type that I've got in my head wrong as they and their good filming friend Dan Poirier continue to release web edits of them riding really technically demanding features.

Inside is Mike and Dan's story along with web edits of the one wheelers in action,

Raising The Bar…

Eighteen-year-old, professional freerider, Mike Parenteau from Nelson BC, has been pushing the limits of Freeride Unicycling for the last two years. Mike has been riding lines that would be considered difficult even for expert two-wheeled riders. He has gone so far as to implement advanced slope-style and freeride tricks from the two-wheeled scene into his unicycling repertoire, such as spins, tail whips, super-mans, no-foot cans, and flips. Mike has been filming with Nelson local videographer, Dan Poirier, who has captured some of these new stunts on film. Mike’s goal is to revolutionize the sport of freeride unicycling with technical precision and style, dropping into lines and sticking tricks that two years ago would have been claimed as ‘impossible’ on one wheel.

Dapoirier Inc.

Although still green as a company, Dapoirier Inc. brings together a group of talented and energetic young people that are passionate about filming and bikes. Just finishing their first season of shooting riders around Nelson, founder Dan Poirier is happy with the results from the past year. “I’ve enjoyed working with all the riders, photographers, and camera operators this past season. We’ve learned lots, and had a lot of fun while doing it.” says Poirier. As they put away the bikes for the winter and get ready for the white gold to fall for the winter, the crew at Dapoirier Inc. is happy with what they’ve accomplished, and are excited about what the next season holds for them.

Crazy, can't be to good for your nuts though.

I always thought it would be fun to have some handlebars on a unicycle, it would give you more control and allow you to take some of the impact off your crown jewels.

also allow it to freewheel and add a brake, it would be ace. Although maybe more of a one wheeled bike rather than a proper unicycle.

Congratulations Mike and Dan! It's awesome to see Mike pulling these stunts and riding so hard.

Apparently Mike has had (and I think since destroyed) a "2-speed" uni as well! Have to ask him about the details though.

That sounds like a Schlumpf - its a two-speed crankset where you change ratios with a 'button' on the crankbolt. Spindle is square taper. I rode one on two-wheeled bike (have to specify considering the context) and it was a blast. Similar to the Hammerschmidt, similar price too, but no need for a shifter pod. Swiss made perfection. I would like to get one on my trail bike one day...

I believe Kris Holm used a Schlump on his unicycle... that crazy so and so.

Hmm Impressive skill, but I will never be a fan of unicycling. It just does not do it for me.
