Leanna Gerrard - Bike Check

Sep 12, 2008
by Tyler Maine
Leana Gerrard is from the Pacific North West and grew up cutting her teeth on the BMX and then MTB race circuits. She specializes in gate racing but loves the DH side just as much. Recently Leana's season came to a halt after a big off in New York, but that hasn't stopped her from being stoked and looking forward to next season. I had a chance to sit down with her and her custom set up Cannondale Rize that she races for 4X and Dual.

Have a look at her race machine and her video interview inside:No stranger to racing, we run into Leana all over the place it seems. From the NMBS races, to Sea Otter, to the Fluidride Cups and events in Whistler, gravity racing is her gig. This season Leana is on the Cannondale / Mona Vie squad and is their only gravity representative, so expectations were high. A strong start had things looking up and a cross country road trip with various venues awaited. Unfortunately the road trip was cut short due to an injury in New York, but she still wants to share her new ride with all of us, so have a read and enjoy the pics and video.

For this year Leana really wanted to build up a capable 4X / Dual racing machine that was light and strong. Having previously raced the Prophet and a Jeckyl before that, it was time to start with a light weight frame and built it up properly. She chose the Rize as the frame to build from and the results look good.

Having a light frame is one thing but if you heavy parts on it, then well you've defeated the purpose of the frame. The Rize has been built up to a feather weight at 26.6 lbs with parts from Shimano, Kore, Fox, Kenda, Crank Bros., Goodridge and e.13.

By running the Lefty up front, Leana is able to get the front end lower to where she wants it to be. In the rear, she's installed a shorter stroke Fox Float RP3 rear shock to slacken out the bike too. This is all to give it a better stance for racing.

I wish I could ride 4X on a 26lb. bike without busting it.

I think a lot of us do. That is the beauty of a full sponsorship. Destroy a bike, get another one.

Props girl, I remember you when you were just a wee lass on the WIM series back in the day. Stoked to know you are still killing it up here in the PNW. Maybe I can get you and Amelia to start a One Ghost woman's squad up here Dragon

They're Goodridge brakelines, fairly easily available. Available in Black/White/Clear/Carbon/Red/Blue/Green hoses with Black/Silver/Red/Blue/Gold fixings.

Look into the words of Colin Chapman: go faster by adding lightness.
Come on, can you find a lighter and stiffer, more appropriate race fork? She's on a Cannondale, Farrar21. What do you think she's going to run?
Lefty works great. Don't be a hater.

Using a Lefty for 4x isn't new. Cedric used them, and so did Aaron Chase back when he did 4x.
