“To roam is to search for something new, on local trails in your home town, or half way around the world in a place you have never been. On a mountain bike you can cover a great distance in a short period of time or a short distance in a great period of time. They say that the journey can be more important than the destination. In mountain biking there is no destination just a bike, a rider, and a place to ride…” - Quote from the movie ROAM from The Collective.

Living and working in a city like Madrid – a sprawling metropolis can be a very frustrating experience, especially if you are an avid biker. A smog filled capital, covered by asphalt, densely populated by cars, motorbikes, a cacophony of noise, it can sometimes feels like the walls are closing in on you. The pollution fills your lungs and the urge to escape the city and find a serene spot to venture in tranquillity forced us to search the Internet and in the hope of finding some solace nearby. We found many photos and intriguing videos of amazing places that awakened passions. We discovered epic trails, new and challenging terrain that was uncharted by many bikers in Madrid area. If you take the time to research your local area properly, you will no doubt find many amazing places less than one hours drive away.

The beauty of mountain biking is that it is a sport that thrives due to its sense of camaraderie. We are all explorers and as a community this outdoor activity thrives from the sharing of information, new trials and the pursuit of challenging ourselves against one another. Like many bikers from Madrid we found the ultimate challenge at the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range, dividing Madrid and Segovia. A vast expanse of 1500 square kilometres, the rugged and challenging terrain has a maximum height of 2428 meters and is a well-known reference point for local hikers, skiers and bikers (road and MTB).

There is a wide range of amenities nearby including hotels, fincas and restaurants offering fantastic Spanish specialities and local dishes. After years of riding we are glad to have finally found our Nirvana, this place has it all. As you climb higher you will discover Alpine trails and rocky exposed trails that will challenge even the most experienced of riders.

There are literally miles of dusty singletrack as you weave through the pine forests; intersections of root and rock keep you on your toes as the ever-changing terrain ensures that you are tested every step of the way.

Once you have started there is no turning back. The long and short climbs vary, but start from as little as 200 meters but can reach a staggering 2400 meters. It’s challenging for sure, a real test of endurance. There is an endless downhill trail, as long as 24km which encompasses a 1500m downhill! It’s exhilarating and surreal at the same time. Obviously we were transfixed trying to concentrate on not crashing and picking up another war wound, but it was only when we finished our descent that we noticed we had not seen another soul. You really are at one with nature; this surely is one of the top European riding spots for Mountain Biking holidays.

During our journey, searching for a dream trail, Mountain Biking tied us together; we all shared the same dream, an addiction to biking. After knowing our local mountains so well, why are we still dreaming of going somewhere else to ride our bikes? For the same reason you do, finding new borders, meeting new people, tasting new food, riding new places…

We had unearthed a lingering passion during that trip. Our mind raced with ideas, the foremost thought was that Sierra de Guadarrama, near Madrid, represented a new frontier for us, it is the perfect Mountain Biking holiday spot. Epic technical trails, beautiful sunny weather from April to October and of course fantastic Spanish cuisine and wine to help refuel and of unwind after a hard days biking.

got chased up a tree once in spain by a pack of wild dogs. v. scary. kept us up there for ages. fastest descent i have ever ridden once they went. never been so scared. got back to the campsite turns out we had been riding in the "valley of the dogs" . would go back in a heartbeat though. such great natural riding.

Hahaha where is that "valley of the dogs"? to be aware... In Sierra de Guadarrama you'd only see wild porks and roe deers ;-)

I never heard that name. Won't it be the Valley of the Fallen?
I have never seen dogs loose in the Sierra de Madrid.

Spain is a pretty amazing country. Ive been able to visit a few times. Good food, nice people and great scenery. Granada, Malaga and Sevilla were all pretty amazing.

Southern Spain is amazing! Also Northern Spain, Central Spain ;-). Tourism is being guided to the main stream circuits, we have specialized in finding amazing riding spots in places you wouldn't imagine. Thanks for commenting!

Agreed, I spend a few weeks there in May last year and it was amazing! first time riding in another country, the Malaga region is amazing for riding. granda and sevilla are wickedly cool cites with amazing people and food. I would love to go back

Spain is an amazing country, and with HUGE mountain biking potential. it is great that some people realise this and work hard to get people to come over. The sooner it becomes a biking destination, the better for local riders to. Nice work.

A group of 8 of us go riding in Spain every year it's amazing and very cheap to get to from the UK from our local airport £200 with bikes to mercia we drive inland a few hour's to a region called seirra espuna the ridings great with pleny of mountain singletrack to ride accommodation is very reasonable in this region as are food & drink prices
  • 1 0
Thanks @mikesturgeon! haven't been there but heard of. If you fly to Madrid and ride with us in Sierra de Guadarrama I think there's a lot to see and tons of singletrack also and... we'll pick you up at the ariport and in less than one hour you are in your accommodation. No 4 hour driving and you save one day or two to ride more. Our packages are also good priced ;-) take a look at our site.

We are also making trips to ride on The Pyrenees in the area where the EWS will come in September, the place is amazing, take a look this video vimeo.com/113810545

Madrid....where all trails are being destroyed and mountainbike is being forbiden....
  • 4 1
Not exactly, may be where you usually ride or in saturated areas. But the rules of the park permit expressly mountain biking in trails not only in gravel roads. Forbidding mountain bike is quite far away.

Yes and no. IMBA is doing their best and there are a bit of pretty funny trails, but let's talk about Schmidt... All in all, If you think about the inmense amount of bikers in Madrid I think we could be even worst, but we could be a bit better too.
  • 1 0
There you go, Schmid is one of the most known and crowded trails of Sierra de Guadarrama, tons of hikers, elder people in huge groups, school visits.... if you want to ride expressly the most crowded trails and pedestrians have priority, there comes trouble. But if you choose well, you'll find that you can ride world class singletrack a day long without finding a soul...

Of course IMBA isdoing a great job, we partner with them and it's their "fault" that the authorities of the park wrote down that it was permitted to ride. We have attended to meetings in Cercedilla organized by hikers who want MTB to be forbidden and the director of Parque Nacional Sierra de Guadarrama himself said clearly (for the disappointment of hikers) that he would not forbid mountain biking in the park and that Madrid's regional government intends to promote cycling tourism, it's clear enough.

Destroyed trails are those built illegally, because that's is indeed illegal, trail building and most of it if you build them in private land or without permission. In any case there's more natural singletrack of what you can ride in a life. Jorge our guide has spent two years riding without repeating and we even discover new trails when we ride.

Saludos

This looks awesome! I'm headed to Madrid in early May and would love to ride for a day. Where's a good place to rent a bike & equipment? (140-160mm trail bike) I'd rather not have to haul my helmet and pads.
  • 1 0
Hey @late2theparty we do that! contact us at info@trackmtb.com and I'll let you know more details. We have a group arriving in early May, but let's see what we can do.

Spain is such a wonder. I want to go so bad.
  • 7 0
Thanks for your comment @taletotell, Yes Spain is awesome, we just found that Madrid is the only big European capital with such a great mountain destination less than one hour driving. Of course there are other bigger, most amazing mountains, but as you live in Utah you must know what is to have genuine gems in form if trails just close to your home ;-), we would love also to go ride in the States, hope this day comes soon.

How hot does it get there in the summer? The city gets silly hot.
  • 1 0
@llarrggee the city is almost unbearable but in the mountains is nice. While in the city is at 40-41º celsius mountains are about 33º celsius and with cool breeze many times. This year even in autumn we were riding with sun at 20º celsius what was a really nice surprise.
