While we were looking for a place to start the bike season, we found something interesting in the Atlantic Ocean. Madeira is more than just an island and destination for tourists, which are transported from sight to sight.
The Portuguese Flower-Island, with an area of approximately 750km² is not large, but it has everything to offer what a mountain bikers heart is looking for.
From desert-like and free burned landscapes.
Over rocky, rooty and flowy trails.
To very narrow, jungle-like single track trails - everybody finds their favorite.
We stayed in the sweet village Jardim do Mar, located in the south-west of the island. Jardim do Mar is not big, but has everything you need, a hotel, holiday apartments, some bars, restaurants and a little supermarket.

Via Shuttle you can enjoy the Trail-diversity of the island very well. Above Jardim do Mar you find the Redline, the Blackline, the Fox Trail and some more – build by Bikulture.
In the eastern part of the island, above the capital Funchal, you find a downhill slope, many single trails and very steep verticals next to the ocean.
To the west of Madeira, some trails get as narrow as a jungle.
Furthermore, the North-West has some beautiful viewpoints and natural wonders to offer.
Who is not yet convinced, this place has the potential to host one of the many Enduro or Downhill races.
After an exciting day in the wood’s, usually some Poncha’s at the nearest bar have to be enjoyed.
Poncha is a native drink consisting of maderian rum, freshly squeezed oranges and honey. Insanely delicious - but be careful - 3 or 4 of these little glasses can easily burn into your mind.
It's a pity, that our return flight was waiting for us. But certain, we will be back as soon as possible!
Will definitly come back and bring my own bike.
Nice that you are enjoying MTB holidays in Madeira.
Sascha a.k.a. Bam Hill actually rode with Bikulture, we are another main guiding company, located in the West of the island (Prazeres), with a great trail network and good vibes.
