2011 Mongoose Teocali Prototype

Apr 20, 2010
by Tyler Maine
Mongoose’s Khyber and Teocali bikes have been on our radars for a while now and at this past weekend’s Sea Otter Classic, they had a few new Prototype bikes on hand. Darren stopped by with the newest Teocali prototype for 2011 and we got a chance to talk to him on film about the new design.

More inside,The newest Teocali rendition will be edging out the Khyber that we all know, with its lighter tubing and comparable travel, the 2011 Teocali will be an All Mountain trail destroyer.

Specs:
– Tapered Head Tube
- Hydro formed top tube (better stand over)
- 150mm Freedrive suspension platform (up from 140)
- The freedrive platform on the Teocali is running on the bearings that you’ll find on the burlier Booter which are larger and will last longer.

They have made it stronger without adding weight to the frame. There will be three trail specs (The Comp, the Elite and the Super) and one Enduro spec (the Mega).

photo

To sum it up, the 2011 Mongoose Teocali will be lighter, stiffer and stronger!

While wandering the pits on the last day, I spotted this Prototype as well. No one would say if it was from Mongoose, GT or Cannondale, but it was there and I got some pics to share:

That Teocali looks like a great little bike. Light enough for trail centres and strong enough for a bit of fun along the way.
As for the other bike. Surely it's a Mongoose?
It has the same 'prototype' sticker as the Teocali, which even seems to says 'Mongoose' underneath.
What ever it is though, it looks interesting.

Hope they have sorted out the problem of the linkage coming loose every 5 mins, My 08 kyhber keeps coming loose and has been back to the shop 4 times in the last 10 months..... Also the suspension design is a pain in the arse to clean, other than that I love my khyber and this new teocali looks well nice!
  • 1 0
yea they have gotten much better.. My 2010 khyber is pretty good about staying all tight.. no real issues yet..
  • 1 0
good luck finding parts for the geese up here in canada! not really good representation for distribution up here, otherwise they are amazing looking bikes! lovin the second one QR linkage and all, don't really care who makes it!!!!
  • 1 0
I have an 09 boot'r team, probably the best bike ive ever been on.
  • 1 0
i think Zellars had the distibution rights here in canada before ( but don't quote me on that) just like how sports chek had iron horse
  • 1 0
The un-named prototype is the Mongoose Salvo, it's replacing the Otero next year. The QR changes the leverage ratio just like on the Otero. That'll be your $700 bike and up. The new Teocali looks sick, I can't wait to get my hands on one.
  • 2 1
Those Teocali bikes were kinda under the radar and now it seems like they have improoved their bikes 100%. It looks like a Booter and a SC blur mixed into a 6 inch trail bike. sick
  • 3 1
the bottom part of the prototype sticker reads mongoose research and development... sick bike, but it still lacks a 36 up front.
  • 1 0
Is it just me or does the new Teo' look reaaaally short on the wheelbase? I race an 09' Elite for comparison, love the bike. This one looks a bit wonky to me. Would love to throw a leg over it tho.
  • 1 0
I think we get that impression cos the rear wheel is nearer the camera, looks great though
  • 1 0
dont hold me to it but i think thats cause the bb is floating with the rear suspention and so moves making for a longer wheelbase once the suspention is at sag...
  • 1 0
mongoose85: The wheelbase is a bit longer than a 2010 Teocali. The head angle is more slack and the top tube grew by 10 mm. Kind of split the difference with a Khyber and 2010 Teocali.

radleyy: The wheel base stays more constant (read stable) because the rearward/upward axle path mimics what a fork does. you notice this most when full squishing both wheels in a drop or hard turn and the bike remains more stable than say a vertical axle path design.

hey alot of bikes over the years have used a QR in there links and it work for it part like the rocky mt ETS used it for years.and C'Dales did make a dual crown years back it was moto 120
  • 3 3
Forget the Teocali, WHAT IS THAT PROTOTYPE?!?! I mean the lefty of course screams Cannondale, and they have had some radical ideas throughout their career, which might explain why there's a QR on the rear suspension linkage. I need to know what is up with that or else my head is going to explode.
  • 2 1
its a mongoose proto, where it says "prototype" below it clearly says "goose research and develop"
im going to bet there is a "mon" before the "goose" under that cable housing

and the "m" cap on the bearing is a little give away as well
  • 2 0
Mongoose already has a bike that uses a qr to adjust the travel. so it's nothing all that crazy.
  • 2 0
Yes bxxer-rider, I gathered that from all the comments posted 4-6 hours earlier than yours. @phobospwns: Neat, I was unaware of that.
  • 2 0
Why are bike companies showing off there 2011 models, some of the 2010 models arent even avaliable yet! get this years out of the way first...jeeze..
  • 1 2
That Proto is Mongoose, look at the sticker near the seattube and downtube joint, "PROTOTYPE, mongooose research development", and besides that QR system has been featured on some of their other frames, but they were a older model, around 2005ish i think
  • 3 0
Looks suspiciously like a new Otero, with a Lefty to throw everyone off.
  • 2 0
That makes sence, but, that is an awful high end spec for a $700 bike.
  • 1 0
True, but I really doubt the Teocali is coming spec'd with XX next year either. They're probably decking out all the Proto stuff with top-notch components so that the design of the frame is really the only thing being tested. Afterwards let Darren do his thing spec'ing components for the different levels, he's been doing a damn good job picking the nice stuff where it really matters.
  • 1 0
I dont like the QR system on the rear triangle...totaly looks unsafe...but I guess the only thing holding all our bikes together is a bunch of bolts n screws lol
  • 3 0
 HOLY LINKAGE BATMAN!
  • 3 0
Coming from a guy who rides a Giant Reign? Ride it before you bash it.
  • 1 0
Mad props to Darren @ Mongoose for bringing the glory back to the brand. They have really upped their game and are serious about getting back on top, good job !
  • 1 2
That QR slot needs notches, otherwise thats going to need some serious torque to stop it sliding under impact!

Definitely Mongoose, how did the guy not see that, it says it on the sticker!? Looks awful with that lefty, and i like them on C'Dales!
  • 1 0
Well given the small font size it's easy to overlook (I know I missed it), especially when you factor in that most people will most likely notice the QR on the linkage and have an instant reaction of "what the hell?"
  • 8 8
I think the one with the lefty fork could do with some bigger disks. Other than that, it looks a nice clean bike, with a complicated suspension system
  • 9 3
weird link, looks as though you can adjust the travel with a qr!
  • 2 1
Yeah, the old Marin Tara frames had QR travel adjustment like that.

The Mongoose looks really nice Big Grin
  • 8 0
As sick as the second bike looks, that quick release does NOT look too trusting to me.
  • 11 1
the second bike is clearly mongoose. match the "Prototype" stickers, and read under the sticker on the second one.
  • 2 1
 ebo421 gets the win
  • 2 1
that QR remarks april fools... hope it is just an old joke!
  • 5 1
no its to test the travel.. and adjust on site if it needs to be.. once fine tuned the QR will dissapear and make room for 1hole or 2..to bolt on..
  • 2 0
for what its says on the cannodale sticker ,cannodale and mongoose are an item now ,
  • 2 0
As far as I know Cannondale and Mongoose are not merging into one company. However Schwinn, GT and Mongoose are all owned by Pacific Cycle, and Pacific and Cannondale are both owned by the same investment group. Maybe there sharing technology now.
  • 3 0
Dorel Ind. bought Pacific, and now owns Cannondale too.
  • 2 0
HEY?! where is cannondale's dual leg dual crown inverted yet? they are holding back suspension tech! who else would like to see a flex-less 200mm inverted?
  • 1 1
is it just me or is the tapered head tube the ugliest thing out there? it looks like a damn Corona bottle...they should just go to a full 1.5 HT...asthetically speaking of course.
  • 3 1
 lefty's are gay
  • 2 0
iv always thought the teocali linkage is ridiculous. this hasnt changed my opinion. its a good thing though. i cant even work it out by looking at it :?
  • 1 0
...oop, nope i just worked it out with some closer looking and more concentration. yep, its ridiculous.
  • 1 1
the prototype bike is a mongoose too. it says "mongoose reserch and development"
on the prototype sticker.
  • 2 0
yaay good job! you can read ebo421s post!
  • 2 0
maybe the biker dude didnt read it
  • 1 0
I agree with raleighvoid, way to complex, keep it simple stupid.
  • 1 0
WOW, a mongoose with a lefty... just when you thought you'd seen it all!
  • 1 0
wen i say mongoose and cannodale are a item now ,its becaus ei did talk to a guy from mongoose and he said to me that i had to go to a cannodale distributor to get some parts ,but they have a exellent service ,so he send me the part anyway but i ha dto pass by my local dealer
  • 2 1
the suspension on that looks like a bunch of bikes had a baby, abp, fsr, and faux bar haha
  • 1 0
mongoose and cannondale are both owned by the same company so it could be either
  • 2 2
i really dont care what changes they make and what they do, im never going to respect mongoose as a bike company.....cannondale is close too
  • 4 0
why? mongoose had some of the sickest BMX race bikes back in the day and the new bikes preform just as well as any modern day big name.. and they get it to the consumer waay cheaper then other brands.. if you cant look past a name and see how well a something works then you are quite thick headed.
  • 1 0
sure it works just fine, i just dont like the company. and as for the bmx thing, they made nice bmx bikes back in the day, they are no longer the same company, theyve been bought and are now being run by pacific cycles. just because a bike company used to make real high quality product does not mean they are still the same quality after ownership has changed hands, people that buy companies change them the way they wish and in a lot of cases thats not a good thing. higher production, lower cost, lower quality. try not to insult people you dont know....its rude
  • 1 0
I dont get how you can say that the mongoose bikes are not a quality bike.. for the price point that they try and achieve they produce amazing products.. as far as build quality, the only issues I have seen are with the older Cannans, they had a tenancy to crack under huge loads, which is by no means a good thing. They fixed the problem the next year and I haven't seen any more pic lately. In addition, issues such as that are always present in the first year run of bikes.. I have seen 3 pics of intense 951's with headtubes sheared off, but I dont think they are a bad company. Just first year run of bikes almost never have all the problems worked out.. and tell me what company makes bikes that work as well and have as good of a component spec as the mongoose brand? and what is your standard for quality? I would like to know why you think that mongoose is inferior to other bike makers.
Not trying to be bitter just would like to know why people are so adamantly against Mongoose and the brand name..
  • 1 0
so that means that the Khyber is gone next year? so should I keep my 2010 khyber super or sell it for a new Teocali Mega?
  • 1 0
The second bike is clearly from mongoose, under the prototype sticker, it says MONGOOSE DEVELOPMENT.
  • 1 0
 good spotting!
  • 1 0
Actually I have set up a shop in Kelowna B.C. carrying the full line up and parts.
  • 1 0
finnally someone to get parts from for my goose here in canada. Can you send a link or something to cantact the your shop stund thanks would appreciate it
  • 1 1
It would appear to be a mongoose hence the article heading and the "mongoose research and development" sticker and the M on the bearing cap....
  • 1 0
Bearing cap or beer cap because its only on one side? I like the beer idea better! LoL
  • 2 0
Is that bike at the bottom a school project?
  • 1 0
hahaha, i rolled by the guy on the prototype and was like "ooo, proto?? i wont tell anybody" and he was like "shhhhh" lol
  • 1 0
(proto)nice bottle cap on the linkage bolt
and floating rear shock to boot
  • 1 0
Oh, that lefty just hurts me whe i look at it.
  • 1 0
And the most complicated linkage award goes to......
  • 1 0
