The bike event "MOUNTAIN OF HELL" just happened to Les 2 Alpes Friday 16 to Sunday, July 18.
Recall the concept of the event: a mountain bike race down together amateurs and professionals whose ultimate goal is to finish first or on the line, it goes very fast lap race and sports, a true mountain bike derby from the glacier 2 ALPES with 2500 meters of altitude is 25 km from negative pure descent. They were 520 on Friday and 443 registered to start the final, Sunday, July 18, as the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

This is a first for the event, the sun was at an appointment during the weekend from hell ... In 11 years of existence, perhaps 2 sessions have withstood the storms ... The “CHOUCAS BIKERS”, organizers race, ensured because all the conditions were met to make beautiful descents on the slopes of Les 2 Alpes.
Note thirty volunteers without whom the event could not be done!

Also this year, a tray of professional worthy of the name (AMOUR Karim, LAU Nicolas, GIORDANENGO Olivier, CLEMENTZ Jérôme, MISSUD David, MARTIN Sven, DOUCENDE Greg, ...). Either the French top 20, more and more Europeans, Americans, girls who came to challenge the incredible "MOUNTAIN OF HELL".
The 11th, under the sign of the famous film "Star War", saw the tumbling "Dark Vader" proclaiming loudly that "the force be with you." Indeed, it was a hell of mental strength to face this competition.

During the first 2 days: no stress on the horizon, however, on Sunday, the day of the finals, the pressure is at its peak. The finish is so tense because of the presence of many pros, and yet the weather is perfect, well-marked trails, many spectators, the saxophonist at 3400 meters heats the atmosphere, the glacier is beautiful but now the high speed at over 3000 meters, was decisive for some. At the foot of the glacier falls have gone before and left room for competitors who were not necessarily expected at the finish line. Finally DOUCENDE Greg, who won the previous two years is out in qualifying and Jerome Clementz (GT) its direct competitor fall at the foot of the glacier on Sunday and let the victory slip. This year GIORDANENGO Olivier takes the pole position before LAU Nicolas and AMOUR Nicolas Nicolas.

Among girls, beautiful performance SUCH Morgane ends still 113th in the standings Final. They were 12 to start. Hats off to girls because year after year they win seats (Pauline DIEFFENTHAL: 122nd in 2009)...
Snow, ice, rock, Devers, single fat, sliding shale in parts of the unusual with the obligatory stop in the bar "MAYA" (from cooling off in a bubble bath) before finishing for the largest pleasure of all, the hike from village Venosc ... From fear to smile, from hell to heaven, great sports moments, that's the "MOUNTAIN OF HELL! The competition is not the easiest but smiles were still present on arrival, a sign that the pilots liked and did not miss the appointment in July 2011 (2011 dates announced later)!

lol at the people trying to ride sitting down and failing, bless looks epic though, and some spiked tyres wouldnt go a miss either!

Looks like fun, I want to do this sometime within the next 10 years! I'd run some wetscreams, they would be great in the snow and by the time you hit the concrete and lower sections they would be so worn out they would have great pedaling efficiency. Or some spikes, but I think the negatives outweigh the benefits...
  • 2 0
that is unreal!! it must hurt falling on that ice at that speed then being hit by others :\
  • 1 0
Yeah, seeing a few riders/bikes getting torpedoed by another rider was reason enough for me to never want to do that. Otherwise, hell yeah!
  • 2 0
yeah i competed in this and i must say the ass slides do hurt! i found the worst bit was the build up, we had to get up at 3 30 in the morning to make sure we got up all the lifts in time to race's 9 o'clock start! then we spent over an hour freezing our asses off at 3400 meters! i loved it though and cant wait till next year Big Grin

It is an AMAZING RACE! It has to be the best one I have ever done!
  • 1 0
 i second that!!!
  • 4 2
That looks like a SUPER-Super-D! Pretty good footage...loving butt-slides on the glacier!!!
  • 2 3
Or maybe the endurance downhill races on this side of the ocean should be called "not-so-super-D" ...
  • 5 2
holy shit i would like to compete in that
  • 3 0
I am so doing that next year! Racing through a bar! Awesome!
  • 2 0
also why didn`t any one gap the stairs
  • 1 1
a few people did, they just didn't show it. also your tired with extreme arm pump and you just rode through some slippery foam so your not gonna want to take the risk of a stair drop in that point of the race.

Here is an onboard camera of the start

Looks rediculous ..hahha i like how they ride on the ice but some cant even stand up on it
  • 2 0
i want to do this race before i die.
  • 2 1
they fall going 1km down a grass hill wow.... the ice was cool but they shoulda just cut the grass part out!
  • 1 0
One guy looked like he was headed towards hitting a dog after some stairs at 6:17. It's too bad that was cut off.
  • 1 3
I don't quite understand why so many people think this race looks so fun. Maybe if excluded the top section in the snow and ice, okay, but I really don't see the point trying to race bikes on ice that you can't even stand up on. It's just silly. Also, what was with the soapy bubbles when the race went through the bar in the village? How dumb. That's exactly what people need, soapy bubbles all over their brakes rotors when they're about to point their bikes downhill again. Real smart.
  • 3 1
whats the point of racing bikes at all, you could slip and get hurt!
  • 1 1
Because that would close the door to opportunities like swimming pool bike races. Just imagine racing laps at the bottom of a swimming pool while wearing scuba gear. How awesome would that be? About as awesome as racing on ice.
  • 5 0
 it's official, i'm gonna try scuba-biking!
  • 3 0
 stever you are boring
  • 1 1
I don't think I'm boring, just practical. You saw the video. The glacier section wasn't a bike race, it was a slide-on-your-bum race. Leave the bikes at home a get out the crazy-carpets, it would be more fun.
  • 1 0
Damn epic race there, need to do something like this one day. Loved the bar section and the bubbles.
  • 1 0
some james bond tyres with the ice spikes would be nice here:P
  • 1 0
Crazy. I was laughing the whole time! I'd love to race that.
  • 2 1
didn't we try that on x-games like 20 years ago?
  • 1 0
that looks soooo fun. I want to ride there.

  • 4 2
 love to do that race
  • 3 2
What language was that written in ?
  • 3 1
It was a press release from France. So grammar is a little off.
  • 9 0
 Just a little off
LOL
  • 1 0
Ya, that was a little hard to read.
  • 2 1
I would love to give that a go, man, seriously great fun!
  • 1 1
Thats awesome. only if there was some better riders or at least footage of the better riders
  • 3 4
some of the riders we not all that good is we get a few crazy north shore people in that they would win for shure
  • 3 2
This is true. at around 3 you can see people slowing down to go over a bump then down a steep hill. Then they cannot even make a 90degree turn on the stairs!!! WTF! Now I am sure they are probably super endurance riders or something, but it is ridiculous that these people are at this level of technical skill.
  • 1 1
i think they are proper tired by time they are near the end. imagine arm pump that lasts for a hour or so.....extreme pain.
  • 2 0
Sorry I totally agree with the first comments. A lot of these riders look like xc racers who've never pointed a bike downhill before. I'm sure they're great at xc, but they just looked like hacks going down. And the excuse about fatigue is only partially valid. If a person isn't used to dh, then yes, they're going to be in pain. However, anyone who is used to riding Whistler or Kicking Horse, top-to-bottom, all day long, would not really have this kind of problem, especially if they're comfortable letting go of the brakes a bit and riding fast.
  • 1 0
^ totally agree with stever. I wonder if this was footage of only the slower riders?
  • 3 0
Generally, the footage seems to be of the slower riders. Having just got back from it, the videos missed out some of the super tech rock sections after the glacier, and by the time you get to the grassy single track, not only have you descended 1000m vertically, and about 10k, you've climbed at least 200m, at altitude! With a full downhill rig! So you are hanging out of your ass.
  • 1 0
finally! someone that actually did it is commenting! very insightful.
  • 1 0
 okay thanks jserg.
  • 3 0
@ Stever: I have competed in this race and have been to Whistler. It is a lot easier to ride Whistler (and let go of the brakes) than in the Alps. The trails aren't as smooth, the air is thinner, the bottom is as hard as rock, there is less grip because of all the rocks lying around. And besides that is this race on trails that are usually for hiking only and it is 25 kilometers including going uphill. So maybe you should come over, compete and than give your comments. There might be a reason there are so little top downhill riders from the States and Canada... your trails are just too easy Wink
  • 1 0
 ^ awesome!
  • 1 0
Our trails are not easy. It is because our hard trails include stunts that are not found on downhill racecourses. Like wheelie drops and 6ft high skinnies. whistler is easy because it is made to be easy due to liability lawyers assessing every jump stunt and berm.
Where I ride on the shore, we have some of the craziest conditions I know. If you think your trails are "hard as rock" then you should come ride the north shore sometime. The only thing you get to ride on in the shore IS rock, and wood.
  • 1 0
Don't get me wrong, I was just teasing a bit. I have got great respect for Canadian riders,bike-parks, bike-manufacturers etc. and for what they have done for the sport. It is just always annoying to see people comment and think they are better than others based on a few minutes of video. I would say: go ride, go travel and keep your comments to yourself and your friends.

  • 3 0
 I doubt you could...

yeah a full 7 inches looks about the minimum you would need to cruise over some of that terrain without getting bucked

"many spectators, the saxophonist at 3400 meters heats the atmosphere"
haha i think something may have been lost in translation there
  • 1 0
the other freeridelife guy had a helmet cam from a few years back. It truly is a gnar kill race. These pics don't even get close to doing justice for how absolutely gnarkill this race is. Not just in length, but shear steepness and speed mixed with almost no traction from ice and snow. Good article. Definitely going to hit one of these up before I'm 30.
  • 2 1
whats that about before 30.. ? are you getting old that fast ? Razz
  • 1 0
No, but as time goes on, and I get further into my career, time becomes less. I would also like to start a family etc... and well, with kids, doing events like these just don't seem too practical until they are grown... and by that time, I will be a whole heck of a lot more brittle than I am now, ntm if I did get hurt, recovery time would be greater. Not bashing on the older guys, nor stating I'm getting older fast, just the age I see the event being the most feasible in.
  • 2 0
in that case.. youre a 100% right.. (i did feel a bit old between the rest of the megaV participants ) but there were guys there of 40 and older..! Big Grin
  • 1 0
just come back from this race, was fucking insane!

 good to hear ! tup
tell us more !

and post pics luke before we organize an angry mob with pitch forks! Smile

Glad you had fun. Sounds like a dope ass event!
