2015 Oceania Championships - Toowoomba, Australia

Mar 2, 2015
by Ben Stevens
Jubilee Park, Toowoomba’s home of mountain biking was host to the Oceania Championships this week. Cut into the hillside overlooking the Lockyer Valley and co-designed by World Champ Jarred Graves, Toowoomba’s downhill track McKenzie Frenzy had plenty to offer for everyone.

Plenty of effort had been put in by riders who had travelled from all over to take part in this international round, offering the opportunity for extra UCI points and the final round of the Australian National Series to follow on Sunday.

Having race day on Friday meant riders had the chance to get in early and enjoy 4 full days of official riding on the trail.

An overnight storm on Thursday night saturated the track, making conditions for practice very interesting in the morning. Some riders collecting so much mud they were unable to keep the bikes rolling though flatter sections of the trail.

Richie Rude won the Senior Men's category, but because he does not hold a licence from a country within Oceania (Australia, New Zealand see below.. he therefore can not be crowned Oceania Champ and take the gold. He still gets 1st place UCi points for the continental champs. Same for Claire Buchar who is Canadian. Hope that helps?

So odd to see photos of a Dh race without a single rock on the course... It's like a mountain made entirely of dirt.

Richie should have scored 200 UCi points for the fastest time:

I am sure his team manager will look into this.

Neither of the fastest Elite runs made it on to the podium...I'm confused. Was this a multi-day race?

You've got to be from the Oceania region to get the gold

Richie Rude is from America and Claire Buchar is from Canada, both which are not part of the Oceania Region, therefore they got the fastest times but did not podium.
