you could argue that competition for the guys is much harder but then girls have a physical disadvantage making them weaker and more prone to injuries resulting in a higher risk if they hit the same jumps. It's really hard to level this out but I would feel a bit stupid with that cheque in my hand...
  • 72 1
More prone to injuries - sorry but provide medical research to back that up?
Also, while they may be weaker, fully grown women are not weaker than a 14 year old boy. You don;t need strength to whip - just technique and ability.

Dude it's common knowledge that it's way easier to build muscle with testosterone. That's the reason it's used to get buff. Less muscle mass means less stability for skeleton in case of an impact.

... Swiftly brushing past the point i was making.

Well more well trained muscles around your bones means you are more protected against dislocations etc. every shoulder surgeon will tell you that. The point about 14 year old boys... I dunno I think puberty starts around 10-11 so they porobably have already way more testosterone than a fully grown woman...just look at the times of the junior men compared to the elite women in dh.
  • 18 1
the competition is on a different level with the mens...
  • 15 1
One look at the photos shows that
  • 22 2
but women have better mobility so maybe they are less prone to injury because they can end up in some crazy yoga position mid-crash and be fine.
  • 14 2
Ah shut up with that argument... it's so pointless and off the mark. There were only 2 women competing and I believe this is the first year they even allowed prize money for women. Of course there's going to be less prize money vs. the guy's who have had this contest setup for years- turning it into what it is today. Give it a few years and maybe more women will enter and the event will get bigger (if that's possible) and will allow bigger prizes for the ladies.
  • 23 7
Stop using your anus for a mouth Tabletop. Pseudo bro-science horse shit as good as it gets.
  • 9 3
Once boys hit pubertiy, their testosterone level increases by 800%... add that to some finely tuned technique and you get yourselves a whip-off champ. Well done Iles. As far as the cheques for women go, event organizers definitely should make it more attractive and rewarding for female athletes.
  • 12 5
..implying that the hordes of guys that do it for the prise money?
AFAIK, there were no real prizes for the first couple years... or at least it was just what Sven and co could round up (most likely beer)

Implying that dudes do it because they are muscle-bound testosterone-enraged HULK SMASH beasts and women won't be able to achieve the same levels of whippage is narrow-minded and sexist.
  • 6 2
Dude, i am not implying anything, just stating facts

Bro science? Lol what about basic school education?
  • 4 4
Reto- The basic thing is that the prize money was never determined on that so why bother? Again, you're all so far off the mark it's laughable.
  • 16 1
I would imagine that the difference in the amount of prize money for the Men's and the Woman's competition will have been because of the differing amounts gained through entrants fees. So if for instance there were 20 Men vs. 2 Women competing, they could hardly justify a the same prize for the women when they maybe only got $40ish in entrants fees, compared with say $400 from the Mens fees.
Its just like with the Womans DH World Cup live feed, it doesn't necessarily show all/any of the Woman's race - but its because less people are watching it so they may not be able to justify it financially, rather than because they aren't as fast. Its the same in lots of sports, Tennis, Freeski etc. etc. You get prize money/investment in relation to how much money you bring in/back, not in relation to how good you are.

So I would assume that if more woman entered/more people were watching the woman's comp the amount of money they win would go up.

P.S. All figures here are made up, I have no idea how many guys there were and I have no idea what anyone paid in fees.

You're right Scott, just wanted to add my two cents concerning testosterone and puberity :-) ... it's a great event that should be the main focus. The rest will hopefully evolve naturally down the road, as it did in the past.
  • 8 9
"implying that dudes do it because they are muscle-bound testosterone-enraged HULK SMASH beasts and women won't be able to achieve the same levels of whippage is narrow-minded and sexist."

No its not. Its being realistic.

Although there are exclusions to the norm out there, due to the ways men and womens bodies/brains and hormones differ, men of similar skill and training will produce better whips than women. Its just a fact, and stating that fact is not sexist. You are however coming across as quite narrow minded yourself....
  • 9 2
You guys have fun arguing about pointless s**t... I'm off to ride my bike Wink
  • 7 5
trying to put an end to sexism and discrimination is not pointless. What Supercow is saying is actually quite sexist and discriminatory. implying that there are NO differences between the sexes and denying any strengths that men naturally have IS sexism. Also being offensive and saying stuff like "Stop using your anus for a mouth Tabletop. Pseudo bro-science horse shit as good as it gets." in response to a perfectly pleasant comment pisses me off. Be nice for gods sake.

Anyway I'm off to Morzine for two weeks in about 3 hours so I need my fill of pointless pb arguments before I leave Razz

WTF is all I have to say about this conversation...
  • 1 1
 pb shouldn't go npr.
  • 1 0
 whats npr?
  • 2 1
Gabriel, I did not say there is no difference between the sexes. If that's what you took from what I said, then your reading comprehension is lacking.
I said that within the context of pulling a whip (where power is not a pre requisite), drawing the comparison between the two winners of their respective categories (14 year old male vs grown woman)

  • 2 1
If you all don't like the amount of prize money the ladies earned, then let them have their own event and see how much money is available to be given out.
  • 1 1
Yes, men and women are different and always will. I'm sure hormones and body structure plays a part, but I'm convinced that the psychology of gender roles plays a bigger part. From day one women are taught to be sweet and sensitive and boys are taught to be rough and tough. Either way it doesn't matter, the differences will always be there. And it's not sexist to acknowledge that.

And Gabriel, while it's good to try and eliminate sexism and discrimination. You never will. People are afraid of 'different' and there's nothing you can do to alter that. People have to change themselves by themselves. It's impossible to do it for them.

Why am I getting so deep on this anyway? It's f*cking 1am I'm going to sleep
  • 1 0
How did we get to this from a vastly different prize pot?
  • 2 1
Supercow. Your assertion that my reading comprehension is laughable. If only you knew..... When pulling a whip power is a great help. It is often referred to as "muscling the bike around" for a reason. I find myself wondering why nearly every comment you have made here is offensive and condescending. Cheer up for gods sake, it'll make you happier
  • 2 1
Hey, tabletop84, I know where you can back up your argument and get all these punks off your back. Just reference the International Olympic Committee member Gian-Franco Kasper, who stated in a 2005 interview with NPR radio that women's ski jumping “seems to not be appropriate for the ladies from a medical point of view." But he really meant that for ALL women's sports.

You know what he's actually talking about, though? It's our damn ovaries. They really get in the way of us doing things. Like, all the time. I mean, they're always traveling with us, no matter where they go. In the grocery store? Yep, totally not appropriate there. Walking down the street? Sooo not appropriate either.

Gaaaaah, the horror! Could you imagine if we were given the "all clear" from mankind to ride bikes? The saddle would, like, punch through our ovaries and prevent us from having babies, thus slowly killing off the world's population. One tabletop at a time. Man, what a bummer.

Pie tastes better with a cool hwhip

Maybe is just me, but I think there were other better whips than Finn Isles's. He was favored by the fact he's a teenager and crowd favorite.
  • 14 0
Don't go against the PB opinion dude! You'll get shunned by the hivemind
  • 9 1
I think the announcers played a big part in that. They would hardly announce any rider names as they were going by, but ever time Finn was on course the announcers would scream his name and get the crowd pumped. But either way no denying he's got sick whips.

This is an amazing event but I'm not sure its judgeable, there are too many different styles of whip and what one person thinks is the sickest whip they've ever seen, another might think nothing of
  • 13 6
It's unanimous, Finn is king. He's the sickest whip maestro going round. Deal with it

People.... Every posting there's always an argument. Its gotten so old. I used to scroll to the bottom to check out the good vibes. Now???
I just watch/read and move on. I understand the passion but after all aren't we all in it for the thrill of the ride? The feeling you get when nailing a new line through am old section or just barely making it through a brand new trail you've never ridden before. What about the sensation of hitting a drop when you can't see the lander? The sound of your suspension when your landing a big hit? I'm sure many can agree the sound your not here for is the mental "voice" negative comments arouse about the most pointless things. There's 7 billion habitants on earth. Do you really think your argument on Male/Female, 29/26/27.5 wheels. Its all redundant.
Much love and respect for this community.
