Race Recap: Oregon Enduro Series Round 2 - Bend

Jul 8, 2014
by mike albright
With enduro racing season in full-swing in the USA we saw the Oregon Enduro Series roll into the little bicycle/beer town of Bend, Oregon. Situated in Central Oregon, at least a 2 1/2 drive over mountain passes to any 'metro' area, Bend offers incredible fishing, cycling, rock climbing, kayaking, cycling and countless other opportunities that are constantly landing Bend on travel "best-of" lists; best place to retire, top place to ride a bike, and National Geographic recently named Bend one of the 'top 25 ski towns in the world'. The area is a magnet for world-class athletes, former and future Olympians and you're likely to run into the likes of Tour de France racer, Chris Horner in the off-season. This old mill town area turned adventure playground has a bike shop and brewery for about every 4,500 residents, so there's plenty to spread around!

Bachelor will host the 2015/16 USA Cycling Enduro National Championships on newly-built trails. This year the Bend Enduro featured five stages on Funner, Tiddlywinks and the new Tyler's Traverse trail which meant for some tight racing. With the top ten in pro men separated by 60 seconds small mistakes would easily be magnified.

The racing was tight in the Pro Women category but Abby Hippely 23 was a little smoother and faster than the rest beating Jackie Swider by almost a minute.

The crew at the Oregon Enduro series puts on a spectacular, well-run race and Bend was an exceptional representation of this. To top it off it was the Fourth of July weekend which only added to the awesomeness of the whole event."

Having moved to Bend for uh... school? Honestly it's not really school anymore, It's more like ridding bikes and going to class on the side. I can confirm it's as good as you think it is and then some.

When I went to school there I worked out my class and work schedule so that I could snowboard everyday of the week! The trails were super xc at the time which is the reason I left. Now there's more aggressive trails there and rad jumps!!

A lot of athletes with no kneepads??
Crazy, is this enduro?
  • 3 0
A lot of the trails in Bend are pretty "pedally." At least from what I experienced when I was there. And could explain the lack of knee pads.
  • 2 3
 KNEE PADS DONT RESTRICT MOVEMENT
  • 3 3
You seem angry. And wrong, they're uncomfortable as shit any time that you're pedalling hard for long enough to think about it.
  • 2 1
Tinfoil speaks the truth. And if I climb for too long in mine, the straps rub little sores on the backs of my knees.
  • 3 0
It's true, knee pads don't "restrict movement" in terms of cutting down usable rNge of motion for pedaling. I don't think anyone is claiming that they do.

The complaint is that they get hot and sweaty, they chafe, and on top of smelling terrible at the end of the day they just aren't as comfortable as not wearing knee pads.
  • 1 1
Agreed, the way they cut down movement isn't by getting in the way, it's by getting gross, hurting and making you not want to move any more.
  • 1 0
yeah I get what your saying but what about a g form pads or bliss minimalist pads you forget your wearing them
  • 1 1
 Knee pads are heavy.
  • 1 0
g form pads wheig like 200 grams
