A sliver of gold

bigquotesAfter years of trial and error and going through the learning curves of building lines that not many would ever find, we now have the space and freedom we only dreamed about when we were kids. Those simple ideas of getting down the hill have greatly escalated... - Curtis Robinson

bigquotesIt's incredible how long it takes to build and film a project like this, but no matter what it's always worth it to put in that extra time and effort. It's a well-known fact that there could always be more dirt and there always could be another shot. - Evan "Intern" Young

bigquotesWe weren't confident that we would get enough shots on the jump trail so we went ahead and built another trail beside it. A lot of earth was moved by hand but it never hurts to put in that time. Do it right, don't do it twice! If it's going to take another day, take another day. - Dylan Dunkerton

bigquotesI have always had one rule when it comes to filming and riding. Don't force it. If it doesn't feel good don't do it, if the shot doesn't look good don't shoot it. Let it all come together organically - that's when projects come out looking the best. - Dylan Dunkerton

bigquotesThese guys are just building and riding what they want. The byproduct of it all is that anyone can come and experience the coastal crew creations. They aren't just showing it off, they are sharing it. - Evan "Intern" Young

..
Keep it sideways

bigquotesDyl and I have been riding bikes together since we were 10 and 12, getting our dads to help us build a ladder drop behind our school. Even though the Principal made us tear it down soon after, it was a start. Here we are 15 years later still buzzin' each other's tires down the trails while learning what we can from our skilled parents who share the same values in life. Work hard, play hard. - Curtis Robinson

Keeping it tight and getting side ways coastalcrew style

bigquotesI've watched how these guys work from their first webisode, it's not always about how many shots they get but it's about the quality. They don't take the easy route, they know what it takes to bring the imagery to life. - Evan "Intern" Young

K9s

bigquotesThere were a lot of afternoons spent in the mine shaft waiting out the rain. It always helps to have our K9 assistants around to keep the vibes up and lenses on hand. - Dylan Dunkerton

Tools of the trade

bigquotesYou can't go wrong keeping it simple. But nowadays with technology progressing so fast, being a filmer has become not so simple. You could say it's easier to get great shots with tools like drones and cable cams but it has been a big learning experience for us. In the end, the shots speak for themselves, it's insane what tools are available these days. - Dylan Dunkerton

THE INTERN

bigquotesI remember when I first started filming with the crew - Dyl would set up the shot and I would hit record. Now it's progressed to a point of flying drones and remote control cable cams, all to try and keep a shot unique. - Evan "Intern" Young

bigquotesNo matter how many times you ride a new feature or test something for the first time, there is always the fear of miss judging your speed, or half committing. From start to finish the more you stare at your project and start to feel it out, it slowly becomes more and more comfortable until it's time to really feel it out. If you build it... Well, you gotta ride it right?! - Curtis Robinson

bigquotesHere's Shawn Shiraz, he came to ride bikes like the rest of us, enjoy the fresh dirt, the laughs, and to meet new people. It's rad to hang and ride with likeminded people that share the same energy and support for bikes that you do. Somehow he had enough in the tank to cheer a brother on for the first attempt on the boner log. Thanks for bringing the high stoke levels, Shawn! - Curtis Robinson

Hard work pays off- Inty earned him self a bonus in the form of a Demo Alloy

bigquotesThe Intern, Inty, I N T, IntyBoi, Evan "Intern" Young. The myth is true folks, hard work, and determination does prevail (yes this sounds cliche as ever) but damn is it true when it comes to the story of The Intern. If you like something enough and are willing to do whatever it takes to pursue that dream, there is success hidden behind each challenge even if it doesn't feel that way. I've been hanging, riding, and working with Intern for the past 5 years and he may not know it yet but he's living the dream harder than anyone I know. Thanks for years of hard work and good times, the digging ain't over yet sucker! - Curtis Robinson

bigquotesI was just a kid who came here for bike school with the anticipation of finding a spot within the industry. I didn't think that school did much for me but it brought me to the right place at the right time with the right people. It was a good choice to stay! - Evan "Intern" Young

bigquotesIntern has been an integral part of our growth over the years. Whether it's slaving away carrying gear up a mountainside for "Inside Out", packing bundles of slats across ravines for "Arrival" all the way to helping develop and manage CGP. The guy is a master of all trades, you won't find a better, harder working guy than Intern. On top of that, he oozes style on the bike. - Dylan Dunkerton

It's kind of cool to see Evan get a bit of recognition - the guy obviously works super hard and it's good to know it's rewarded. There's a lot of stuff around where it's all 'no work, all play' vibes given out, but there's very few who can achieve a lifestyle like that (certainly for a long time). You may not be academic but if you find something you love and work hard at it you can go places. The Coastal Crew similarly have achieved all they have through hard work. Well done and thank you all!

Evan seems just to be such an down to earth, nice dude and always so helpful. Hope he progresses more and more on the bike, so we might see more then just a few pictures... Smile

"The myth is true folks, hard work, and determination does prevail" - yea, except that part where 5 years later you still him "The Intern"

@MrEtnie: I met him just a couple days ago riding CGP and he's one of the raddest down to earth guys!

Somebody took all the stones from this place and threw them onto where I ride. WTF?

We need a Coast Gravity dream trip contest on Pinkbike asap! Thank you!

I'm going to whistler and cgp in a week, and i don't know which park I'm more excited about. The coastal crew have always been killing it and they continue to kill it cheers boys.
  • 5 0
Im going to whistler in a week too. Still deciding if i want to go to cgp though.

@Niko182 / kitpotato - CGP is an amazing park, in you are in B.C., go there. not as many trails as whistler, but they are sooooo much smoother. really only top quality stuff. It does kinda suck that you have to take a ferry to get there, but id say its worth it.
  • 8 0
@llamaman110: If you're a tourist who isn't used to the Sunshine Coast landscape that ferry journey is mind blowingly awesome Smile CGP is well worth the visit, too!
  • 1 0
@llamaman110: Any good camping near CGP?
  • 2 0
@Rucker10: there is a bunch of camping around there. Me and a few buddy's road tripped up to Canada and I'd say CGP was an amazing experience. The atmosphere is all time and the trails are too good. Highly Reccomended.
  • 3 2
@Rucker10: if you are staying in whistler you can just day trip there. Take first ferry over and last ferry back. I think you can camp right at coast gravity too or atleast on the road leading up to it as its deep in the forest.
  • 1 0
Awesome, thanks for the heads up.
  • 8 1
I love whistler to death, but CGP was such a peaceful riding experience. Fun, low key, Evan intern throwing your bike on the rack for you and hauling you up the fire road and nobody on the trails, I only remember one spot that had braking bumps in the entire park. It was really nice, some people say it sucks that you have to take a ferry but with the right people it was just a beautiful enjoyable ride. I had a great time, I'll be heading up during the off season for sure. The trails are shorter then Whistlers obviously but you surprisingly get a lot of riding in, I did enough to not be able to walk by the end of the day. Flight Deck is such a satisfying trail to jump. It's just really cool they've put this mini-bike park together on an island and keep it going like this, wish there was something closer to me down in Washington that was like this.

Crazy video- Coastal crew's vids have always been next level. You can't predict what they'll come up and they never disappoint. I also knew I had heard this song on PB before: www.pinkbike.com/video/391987 (which is also sick BTW)

Sitting here, with a torn ACL and broken knee, watching this... Awesome video but also painfull to watch.
  • 5 0
not sure what impresses me most: their riding, filming, or trail building. They are truly talented
  • 2 0
All I can say is WOW! Amazing time and dedication into an amazing well built trail. Makes me want to ride it so badly! The video left me speechless with great camera set-up and good riding! Why do I have to work and not ride for a living?! LOL
  • 2 0
I'm so honored and humbled to be a small part of this story, this place, and these people. The coast is a very special healing place for me and without Curt, Dylan, and Evan (to name a few) it wouldn't be what it is. The community and culture on the Sunshine Coast is even better than the trails...and the trails are world class. Cheers guys, amazing artwork here.

What a rad build. That park looks so fun

These guys are f**n awesome in every sense! Always fine editing, music that much (not that heavy metal which is totally irrelevant) and super smooth riding! AMAZING work guys EVERY time! Keep up the pro work that you are doing! - These videos should be considered "how-to" for many out there!

Cool to see a Soda Slope kicking it in the background (laying down by the truck). 26 ain't dead. Just waiting for the 650B craze to wash over and people realize 150mm 29ers are cool for trails but far from desireable for terrain parks like this.
  • 3 0
Coastal Crew, you guys never cease to knock it right out of the damn park! Well done again!
  • 4 0
You guys are a fucking inspiration. Thank you!!!!

Great video, shame it wasn't longer. At least I know I can run other shocks on the rear if I buy a new demo, I've heard the Ohlins doesn't give the pop you may need if you like jumps. Although great for regular DH.
  • 2 0
It jumps like a beauty dude, rode mine at my local for it's 1st day, which is mostly jumps and berms and it is plenty poppy on the jumps, was over jumping small to medium jumps before I knew it, but not in any scary way, just floaty and fast.

Shame my Ohlins sounded like crap from new and has to go back soon, only had it a week :/
  • 1 0
@bigburd: Oh right, cheers. I'd read a review from a guy who rode Whistler a lot, he was comparing it to his 2014 Demo which runs a Cane Creek like mine. He said it smashed the DH, he just couldn't get the pop he liked. You put a damper in the forks?
  • 1 0
@b4uwereborn: Yeah I put a charger in there from my last bike. Haven't rode it loads cos of the problems but jumping seemed very natural for me.

I think some people to too much focus on reviews saying X bike is a park bike Z bike is DH race bike, look at the coastal crew, all on Demos jumping like bad asses, and then look then Gwin last year killing it on the same frame, not the greatest example as they don't run the ohilns but you catch my drift !
  • 1 0
 @bigburd: Cheers mate, that's put my faith in the Ohlins shock. Would fit a damper for sure as i'm currently running one in mine, yeah the coastal crew are sound, as are the fest boys. Love watching their vid's;

I remember a Best-of-Dh-Edit that was one of the things which got me into mountainbiking. The same song was used and it feels great to hear it again now, used for such an amazing video.

Why do they use coil shocks over air shocks?
  • 2 0
Some/most feel that coil shocks provide smoother initial travel which they call 'small bump sensivity'. My understanding is the force required to get the shock compressing on a coil is much less than an air shock (they call this 'stickshon').

It could also have somehting to do with the leverage curve that bike was designed for. Air shocks ramp up at the end because the air is compressing within the shock, where as the coil's fore is consistant throughout its compression. I'm guessing the Pros with factory support are able to tweak air shocks to help with this though.

Lastly, there are some crazy lightweight springs for coil shocks, so the Costal Crew might not care about the minimal weight difference trading off the aforementioned small-bump performance.
