Pinkbike Awards - Slopestyle/Freeride Athlete of the Year

Jan 28, 2015
by Scott Secco

Slopestyle and freeride are diverging: freeride is supposed to be lawless - free in name and attitude - while slopestlye is codified, judged, and regulated by the FMB. However, these two spheres share many of the same riders, brilliant athletes who are helping to progress the notion of what's possible on a full suspension bicycle. Each of our nominees has made a significant impact on mountain biking in 2014, however, we can only honour one champion. This year's nominees include Cam Zink, Andreu Lacondeguy, Brett Rheeder, Brandon Semenuk, and Anthony Messere.

Pinkbike MTB Awards
Slopestyle/Freeride Athlete Of The Year

Brandon Semenuk

Brandon Semenuk and his Trek Ticket S

It's hard to appreciate just how extraordinary Brandon Semenuk's riding really is. A dominant athlete in his or her prime can seem predictable, even boring: Tony Hawk was World Champion for twelve consecutive years, Dave Mirra won 24 X-Games medals, Kelly Slater has been ASP World Tour Champion 11 times now. Semenuk's riding has helped shape how other riders attack a slopestyle course (no repeat tricks, heavy emphasis on opposite rotations) and this year he was the first person to 720 a stepdown and to 720 barspin a jump in competition. He has forced every athlete on the FMB to learn new tricks if they want to stay relevant. In 2014 Semenuk became the first and only three-time winner of the Red Bull Joyride, won the District Ride, and placed second at the Bearclaw Invitational. It was Semenuk's third FMB Overall Championship; he’s won it three out of the five years it’s existed (‘11, ’12, and ’14).

But he's not just a foam pit robot, the winningest slopestyle athlete in history can ride a downhill bike too. Semenuk earned the bronze medal at Red Bull Rampage with a run featuring an under appreciated opposite 360 drop (possibly the biggest ever done), and the requisite monster hucks of a vintage Robbie Bourdon segment. Semenuk is a threat to win any event he enters, and you can bet he'll be working hard this off season to continue his winning ways. Semenuk's big mountain bonafides and unsurpassed slopestyle excellence have added another title to his war chest. By making the impossible look easy, Semenuk is our 2014 Slopestyle/Freeride Athlete of the Year.

Well deserved, and no one can call the 720 step down boring. Jaw dropping Run.

Most amazing run this year. Have to re-watch it from time to time to get a hold on just how amazing it really is... Smile

 "Slopestyle/Freeride" Athlete of the year??

you can't have two categories into one... Should have split into two categories: "Slopestyle Athlete of the year" and "Freeride Athlete of the year" because FMB isn't freeride it's just slopestyle...So therefore the Slopestyle crown goes to Semenuk (obivously) and the Freeride crown goes to Lacondeguy (obivously)!

Lacondeguy didn't have the best run at Rampage this year. He only won because of that big a$$ drop.

 Isnt Freeride already dead?...
  • 26 5
Lacondeguy's run was insane, just because he pulled it off so smoothly and effortlessly does not make it any less of a run. Plus Lacondeguy has dominated the FEST series, which has been arguably one of the best series in some time.

 Freeride never dies!!
  • 15 2
Freeride is in all of us. We are freeride.
  • 14 8
I thought Lacondeguy's run was faster, but Semenuk had more style and had the better runs. This is coming from someone who didn't want to see Semenuk win. Watching this years Rampage and hearing Lacondeguy bitch about not coming in first each year showed me he is a sore loser. Man up and take a loss like a man.

Yes it does...you guys know it deep inside.

Strait could have easily won with his run imo, guy killed it, (2nd run) Had that whip where he tapped the rock with his back tire, huge drops, gnar entrance, and that massssive superman, all while maintaing speed and whipping and styling every jump he hit. Andys run was definitley sick too, and he most definitley dominated FEST. I voted for Rheeder in this poll though, guy killed it this year on slope and big bike, while coming back from a serious back injury.

 @steezer is right!
They just want more money and do not give a single f*ck about the sport.
FREERIDE IS NOT DEAD. Must have "Slopestyle Athlete of the year" AND "Freeride Athlete of the year".

You do understand that some people are introverts and others are extroverts right?
Just because someone is an incredible athlete doesn't mean they're automatically comfortable playing the celebrity/ spotlight role. As an introvert, do you know how f*cking weird it would be to have hundreds of cameras jammed into your face waiting to catch your expressions change? Doesn't mean they're unhappy or a*sholes, it's just another major personality type that I'm really surprised you wouldn't have experienced before?

I'm not speaking wrong of him? He is a rolemodel to me, I look up to him.. But thanks for the explanation.

People who never smile do not respect the fans. THAt's part of the game.
  • 5 1
@jaame that's just sad that you think that way....
  • 2 5
It's not just about being the best rider in the world from a technical perspective. It's about pleasing the fans. Butt faces make it hard to win the fans.
  • 4 1
Jaame, this is still a sport, and these are Athletes not Entertainers. we have the privileged to be able to watch them, we owe them, not the other way around.
  • 2 4
Get real! I don't owe them anything. Every time I spend my hard earned cash (that I got from my real job) on bike parts, I'm paying their wages. They'd all do it for free because they love it anyway. They are lucky to have these jobs. They should be eternally grateful to you, me and everyone else who helps to fund their lifestyle, and they can start by smiling and laughing for the cameras.
  • 3 0
I understand your point, but they are still serious athletes.

Though they have worked incredibly hard to get there jobs, it is not luck, it is the dangerous gamble all extreme athletes make that they will dedicate their whole lives and put their body on the line for the sport they love.

They have earned every penny, and a great deal more (Slopestyle/Freeride is one of the most underpaid jobs, they pretty much do do it for free)
They owe us nothing, they have progressed the sport and helped to develop those products that we buy, that is what your money is paying for.

Also, would you not prefer an honest sport?
One where people are themselves, say what they feel and laugh when they feel like it?
Surely the fact that our sports people are not sponsor coated actors is a good thing?
  • 3 0
You make a good point. I'll give you that. I did get very tired of watching yet another identical boring Johnny Wilkinson interview back in the day. Sour faces are just as valid as happy ones.
  • 14 1
Great call PB, it's really important to acknowledge how dominant Semenuk is. Yes, Lacondeguy won Rampage- but he already got an award for that. To award the best slopestyle / freeride rider of the year you need to look at the entire year, not just a single event, and this year Semenuk was completely dominant. The comparison to Hawk is apt- he's won 3 out of 5 FMB Overall Titles, but one year he didn't compete and the other year he barely missed 1st. That's 18 points (out of 3000) away from winning it every year he's been involved. Is there any event, other than Rampage where anyone seriously expects someone else to win?

Also, he placed third at Rampage. To claim that he's not a freerider is somewhat absurd.

That cork 7 was the most beautiful thing, i ever saw in slopestyle competition.
  • 10 0
I think it's well deserved, coming from a huge Zink/Lacondeguy fan.
  • 6 2
Also I don't expect Semenuk to act a certain way in front of a camera. It literally says nothing about his ability to ride a bike and have a good time. I know plenty of people who carry themselves the same way Semenuk does and they aren't "miserable" they're just not outspoken in front of strangers. But like I said, wtf does that have to do with riding a bike? The kid rips and I think a lot of people understate how well he freerides too despite making podium at Rampage this year, he DID grow up within driving distance of Whistler.
  • 15 5
 Let Aggy in etc etc
  • 10 1
 One word, LEGEND.
  • 9 5
There's no way anybody can take this away from Semenuk, it's certainly deserved. His technical ability and his constant strive for perfection have earned him this title. That being said, I think Pinkbike choosing Semenuk says a lot about what they believe slopestyle/freeride should be and where they want it to be going. That is, the heavily sponsored trick based with judges type events, and less going huge or session type events, a la Fest Series and Rampage. Otherwise, they would have surely picked Andreu Lacondeguy. Maybe consider splitting up slopestyle and freeride? This might open up a space for riders who don't do the FMB circuit to be nominated. Just a suggestion.

I think McGarry should've taken in. What this those beautiful locks and all. How many times can I guy eat shit on the biggest gap ever and still walk away.
  • 16 14
Also heard of a french guy who got 10 world championship titles in MTB. Can't remember his name Wink I think a french girl got more than that.
  • 14 5
 "Slopestyle/Freeride Athlete of the Year"
  • 15 3
Yes I understood, and obviously Vouilloz and Chausson are not competing for athlet of the year in any category. I was just referring to list of long time World champs. I don't think Tony Hawk or Dave Mirra were competing for "Slopestyle/Freeride Athlete of the Year". The guy that neg proped me obviously did not read the article. Well I hope he did not.
  • 4 1
He absolutly deserve's it. For this Year, I hope he will spend more Time on his Big Bike.
  • 1 0
Well this argument is still in its infancy so I'm gonna keep my opinions to myself and go out and freeride watch uci downhills and slope away with no style.
  • 4 1
 No doubt. .
  • 5 2
 Congrats Brandon!
  • 1 1
Is it just me, or does Brandon semenuk look a little like Marilyn Manson in that post run interview?
  • 1 1
WOW what a surprise, dude has almost no competition, one of the raddest dudes out there on two wheels.
  • 2 3
Lacondeguy for sure. its about having fun orelse none of us would be doing it right? Semenuk is too game face that it actually ruins it.
  • 4 5
well i would have expected an honor mention for Szymon Godziek and his Tsunami Flip at the District Ride Frown
  • 11 12
Why no Zink he pushes the sport every time he gets on his bike.
  • 7 10
