Pinkbike Poll: Who Will Win the 2014 Red Bull Joyride Slopestyle Contest?

Aug 15, 2014
by Mike Kazimer
Red Bull Joyride at Crankworx Whistler is hands down the biggest stop on the FMB World Tour, and a win here can skyrocket an up and coming rider's career into the stratosphere. Thousands of excited fans fill the Whistler base area and clamber up the sides of the course, eager to catch a glimpse of their favorite athletes flipping and spinning in every way imaginable as they try to earn a portion of the $50,000 CAD prize purse.

Insane.

Can Semenuk repeat last year's winning performance?

Who are the favorites going into this year's contest? Any one of the twenty competitors is capable of throwing down a winning run, but there is a core contingent that stands out from the rest. Brandon Semenuk certainly tops the list, as the hometown hero has stood on the podium four out of the last five years, including two first place finishes. Known for the massive amount of amplitude he brings to his runs, Crankworx Les 2 Alpes winner Anthony Messerre is another Canadian who'd like nothing better than to snatch the win. The same goes for Brett Rheeder, who has quickly returned to form after being sidelined with an injury last season. And then there's Nicholi Rogatkin, the cashroll spinning, visorless American, who has a fierce bag of tricks that he's itching to dump out onto the course.

Slopestyle Photo Epic- Crankworx Les 2 Alpes

Coming off a win at Crankworx Les Deux Alpes, Anthony Messere will be trying his hardest to earn another victory.

Hailing from the other side of the pond, Sam Pilgrim will be gunning to improve on last year's third place position, and Thomas Genon, who won in 2012, would no doubt like to step onto that top step for a second time. Of course, Antoine Bizet is always a threat with his double flips, and the same goes for Yannick Granieri as well. That's the beauty of the Red Bull Joyride - all of the invited athletes are ridiculously talented, making for a wildly entertaining show for the spectators who have tuned in to watch the world's best slopestyle athletes perform their craft.

Who do you think will win? Cast your vote below, and tune in for the live webcast on August 1th at 4:30pm Pacific Time.

Obviously hope one of the home boys like Brandon, Brett or Anthony claim it. But damn I wish Soderstrom was back in it this year and ready to go, he was is killin' it last year before that nasty crash. When that guy is dialed he rides like the best in the world.
  • 17 2
If semenuk doesn't crash he will take it. Rheeder and anthony are definitely hot contenders too. Personally I think Yannick's runs are always very good he just seems to be hunted by badluck. But there are so many good riders this year. Bummed for soderstrom he was also looking strong
  • 9 1
Better watch out for Nicholi, he on quite a tear lately.
  • 40 5
 Travis Pastrana for the win
  • 2 1
@ecrider That's because he is one of the best in the world.
  • 7 2
I think people under estimate Rheeder, I saw him ride at City 8 and he clearly has mastered the bicycle.
  • 4 2
@ fecalmaster- I voted for Nicholi because Lacondeguy wasn't an option. They are both amazing to watch.
  • 3 1
i love the canadian style, in fact, brett rheeder is my favorite rider, and i think that he win tomorrow, but, i will miss to see the swedish riders (i think that i don't be the only), thelander will be not tomorrow, and joyride without this riders will be not the same
  • 4 0
@nijatarian I agree that they are both amazing to watch but they are almost exact opposites when it comes to riding styles
  • 1 0
If Gulevich is out, who would come in his place?
  • 2 1
 Thats what she said?
  • 1 0
Pilgrim is also a favourite i think, seen the Video of Sam's Roadtrip? Sooo good!
  • 31 4
Tricks are for kids...+1 for the BearClaw! Representing for us old guys! hahaha
  • 2 0
FINALLY! Some one who agrees! I mean, i'm not old at all, but I feel the same way hah.
  • 3 1
I'm proud to be a kid then haha

Surprised to see Semenuk topping the poll. A year or two ago you'd say he's guaranteed the win but the time out from filming seemed to have hampered his consistency which is crucial for a comp run. Conversely the most inconsistent yet exciting rider from previous years seems to have found out how to nail a competition run (Anthony). Still think Rheeder is the best rider but am unsure of his form. So hard to say who'll win, but I'll go for a Euro like Bizet sneaking in a "surprise" win Smile
  • 3 1
Got to agree with it, but Rheeder has won last few times in row so preassure is on him, it's more likely that somebody like Rogatkinwould won.
  • 6 0
I don't think Rogatkin will win. He is super talented and has a lot of tricks but he does them mostly on straight jumps. When it comes to hitting drops and boners and other slopestyle features there are other riders who are more versatile
  • 3 1
I think Rheeder seems to handle the pressure a bit better than Semenuk, especially lately. It seems he's happy to let Brandon take a bit more of the media spotlight which in turn eases the pressure even if Rheeder were the out and out favourite (which with the time out I don't think you could say he is). Rogatkin has some amazing tricks but seems to be a bit where Antony was a year or so ago when it comes to riding technical competition courses like this. So hard to call though and anything could happen really!
  • 5 0
Totally overlooked Pilgrim as well! Would love to see him make a full run and see what he can do
  • 6 2
Semenuk crashed at crankworx europe and now everyone says that he can't handle the pressure. My money is still on him.
  • 3 1
When Semenuk is knocking out competition runs week in and week out then any external pressure doesn't seem to get to him. When he's riding comps once in a blue moon it seems some doubt creeps in. That's only normal, and I think how the first run goes will be crucial for him. He comes across as someone who is dialled through repetition and when on autopilot is almost guaranteed for any win anywhere... but the filming seems to have disrupted this autopilot playstation level riding we seem to expect from him. Just an opinion and I'm sure Brandon will do his best to prove the doubters wrong!

I honestly think this will be a lot like the X games last year in that if Rheeder and Semenuk are landing their runs; it will come down to whoever goes last. By going last they will get that one extra bar spin or combo trick in than the previous rider and then take the win.
  • 5 0
this guy knows whats up^ which ever of the two doesnt crash or goes after the the other. Semenuk being out of the contest circuit, imo, wont effect him. He threw down for rad company, its not like he took a year off. If he gets to the last feature, hes gonna cork 7 it, and its gonna be crazy if he lands it.
  • 7 2
Neg prop me, but I dont like rogatkin, I see that he has a massiv bag of tricks but dont get me wrong!, unfortunately he has no style.. He can through down a cashroll, but no style so I think Semenuk or Pilgrim will go for it! Smile
I'm looking forward, and as a german guy I miss #partyhenke for miles..

I think his laid out frontflips are pretty stylish
  • 11 3
 BIZET FTWWWWWWWW!!!!!!! Smile
  • 5 2
If he does not crash he will be on the podium.
  • 3 1
Yes, he has the bag of tricks to win also
  • 2 1
He's got to trick everything this year and throw more than one banger. If everyone got a dream run of their best tricks then he'd win for sure. Double flip tuck no hander, cash roll, front flip tuck no hander. Brandon could back flip the drop, cork 7 the whale tale and oppo flip whip. I don't see anyone barspinning out of the wall ride like Soderstrom last year but I babble on. How much longer? This is going to be exciting.
  • 1 0
I agree with you! this is gonna be "death or glory" for every one this year, there's so many people that are serious contenders for the win!! that's gonna be insane!
  • 6 2
Semenuk he can cork 7 the final hit and has the back flip of the cabin which still only a few guys are trying let alone perfecting he is also probably the most experienced and stylish rider on the up ramp which is the first feature
  • 4 1
I totally agree, however, last year Rheeder showed us that he can match and even top Semenuk. (X Games) Rheeder landed a cork 7 at City 8. I honestly think that whichever rider goes last between them will take the win by just a small margin.
  • 4 1
The difference at X-Games was that Semenuk crashed out on his first run and played it safe on his second whereas Rheeder pull out all the stops and the risk paid off. Rheeder might be able to throw 7's off doubles but a whale tail? Thats a different kettle of fish and so far only Semenuk has shown publicly he can stomp it. Should be a good contest!
  • 4 1
I feel like Brandon isn't going to cork 7 off the whale tail. Just because he did it for a shot in Rad Company doesn't mean he has it dialed enough where he'd risk his whole run just to get that. My moneys on Brett or Brandon
  • 3 0
Aaand I stand corrected. Dude is nuts
  • 1 1
 Haha like I said
  • 7 1
I will cheer all the Europs! Hopefully no Ami-Bonus this year! Smile
Reboul, Bizet, Godziek, Reynolds will kill it! Smile
  • 3 0
If a European takes the win I will cheer with you Big Grin Wink
  • 2 0
Don't forget about Genon and Granieri
  • 2 0
Semenuk is likely to win, but I will cheer for Bizet
  • 6 2
Im thinking pilgrim has a good shot at the win this year cause of the 'dirt jump' style of the course! if he's able to get one of his many sick runs down, he will be on the podium for sure!!
  • 3 0
It really is anyones game this year. Rheeder, genon, messere and rogatkin are on form. Semenuks always one step ahead and has probably been planning his entire run since last year.but pilgrim ,godziek and bizet all have some crazy tricks and ideas so could surprise us. It's gonna be an awesome show for sure.
  • 7 1
If Semenuk gets one Run safe he might be the One !!!
  • 2 0
 Totally agree.

I really want Messere to win this year, he deserves it so much, but obviously if Semenuk doesnt crash, he will take home the gold.
  • 3 1

 Sam and Sam...GO UK
  • 2 4
Zink got more votes than Bizet, GODziek, Granieri, C-Mac, Reynolds, Watts, Zejda & almost as many as Sam Pilgrim? ROFLMAO there sure are some fvckin' dumb dumbs out there. :s

Gotta say though, even though I disagree with Zink's bellyaching over money, the fact that the entire purse is only $50,000 instead of 1st place being at least that much is pretty f*cking lame. Especially after I just read somewhere that the purse for DOTA competition players (congratulations if you have no idea WTF DOTA even is) is in the millions. Fat, sweaty, greasy, couch potato, dungeon dwelling momma boys can win millions for basically being the most epic of losers, while the raddest dudes on the planet are essentially by comparison, just scraping up chump change. This is a pretty wealthy industry & would be even if it were not for all the profiteering crap the shit heads do to make even more scrilla (pointless wheel diameters, axle diameters, derailleurs instead of gearboxes etc.) so all I'm saying is that these dickhead corporations should stop being such dickheads & step the fvck up.
  • 1 1
Zink won in 2010, it isn't that far fetched?
  • 1 0
Who ever told you that this was a wealthy industry was lying through their teeth. If you've spent any amount of time in the industry you know that's the problem, there's NO money in the mountain bike industry, it's still a young sport and has yet to catch up to industries like BMX and MotoX.
  • 2 0
Dude, Gully got more than Lemoine, and gully doesn't care about sending it pretty hard at joyride, he is only having fun
  • 1 0
I think bizet has the best skill, he has some huge trick but he can't handle the presure. Rogatkin i think to.
  • 2 0
 lacondeguy?!?
  • 10 0
...doesn't give a shit about fmb events other than Rampage anymore
  • 2 0
 Gotta love Andreu
  • 2 1
bearclaw or MC garry for the win ahah ? it's a joke
  • 4 0
Bearclaw has just been dealing with back problems. And McGarry has been improving regularly. Just last year at Whistler McGarry threw the back flip front flip combo. Anyone can win a event where the favorites can go down with a injury in a blink of a eye.
  • 1 0
I agree on all the comments but I hope the "the old claw" will do it!!
  • 5 3
 SEMENUUUUUUK!
  • 3 1

  • 4 0
Are they all going to share first place?
  • 1 0
No lol, that's just the order I'm calling.... 1st -6th
  • 1 0
 Reynolds wont get that far
  • 2 3
if nicholi pulls a run together with all his best tricks hes almost certain to win
  • 4 1
His best trick is the cash roll isn't it? Godziek did a barspin cashroll.
  • 4 1
I still just don't think he is that great.
  • 2 2
yea but rogatkin is super consistent with cashrolls, triple whips, late frontflips, flip double whips etc
  • 2 1
 Rheeder.
