Qualifying - Cairns DH World Cup 2

MEDALS OF HONOR

Today an elite platoon of fine young men risked life and limb for their countries, sponsors and perhaps any attractive onlookers they happened to discern from their mud-spattered peripheral vision at 60kph. This special-ops unit consisted of 5 highly trained seals who were all to impact on their respective top 5 targets before ceasefire. Blenkinsop, Gwin, Minnaar, Masters and Dale... 'Aus-pocalyse Now' was a upon them and they fought bravely from their flooded foxholes. It may only be qualifying and tomorrow the list of heroes may be rewritten, but points and pride were on the line here today. These are champions of the slop, kings of the goop... masters of wet dirt. Give them each a medal. We must also honor the female troops who endured the same ordeal and came out alive and on top; Atherton, Carpenter and Ragot as well as the brave boy-soldier, Loris Vergier.

As the sun sets on Friday evening the skies opened once again. Who knows what monster may be created on the hill for the riders to discover tomorrow morning
As the sun sets on this Friday evening, the skies have opened up once again. Who knows what monster may be formed overnight on this hill for the riders to face in the morning.

So it's official... He is really back. Rain or shine, Aaron Gwin has returned to maximum velocity, leaving spectators open mouthed and gasping in every section.

The sun almost came out today it hinted that it was up there somewhere right before qualies started. It was a welcome reprieve after yesterday s deluge that battered the photographers and their gear.

As the track dried up over the day the track turned to the consistency and colour of peanut butter
As if the course hadn't had a hard enough time this week, after qualifying, the hundreds of spectators slid their way back to base.... The only way back down; on the track. Come 4pm it made your average pig farm look like a cricket pitch by comparison.

Minnaar is an unbelievable racer to the point where he is sometimes easily forgotten. Everyone assumes he will do well and he does, so nobody takes note. Well as ever he is in blistering stealth-mode form and could easily take the biscuit here in Aus.

Today's fastest in her Cairns WC uniform. Tomorrow the fight is on, doing battle with the claggiest mud on the planet. Conditions will no doubt be unfair according to start times, especially with such big names well down the pack, but this is the game and that's racing. Until then it's over and out from the Aussie front line...

thank you very much indeed Smile
  • 4 0
 Pretty much my thoughts too.
  • 2 1
I don't want to be 'that guy' but losing the real dirt tv is a massive loss, so I kinda disagree. 2009 was bestist coverage IMHO
  • 1 0
agreed! great pics in some terrible weather, thanks pinkbike
  • 1 0
I loved the pictures and the gist of the captions. My negative comment on the captions got down voted into oblivion though. Real sentences would be even better. Keep it coming though. I enjoyed the pictures and captions despite the criticism.

I am so stoked on this world cup round, it could be anyone at the end, it just depends who holds it together.
  • 2 0
yeah a real gamble in this carnage but damn!! i'm so excited to see those girls and men just tryin' to survive in this mess! that is going to be good for sure!
  • 2 0
That's going to be one of the most exciting world cup I've ever seen! Too bad Dirt TV doesn't make a lot of videos as they used to do...

That's all I want to read about now! Dammit PB please get on that...first the charger boxxer and now an Ohlins? RS is bringing some serious game to the field.
  • 1 0
indeed RS is killing it on suspension, my next purchases will definitely be a pike and the debonair, i bet its a really stiffy ;-)
  • 4 0
Love how they buried that deep in this article
  • 1 0
lol Blackbox has been running that charger design for a few seasons atleast, nothing new for these guys
  • 2 0
Sure. But it'll be available to the public soon. If a pro is running an ohlins damped shock, will that eventually be brought to the market as well? That's what I'm talking about..
  • 3 0
Didn't miss taht. This is the first ohlins fork that I've seen a pro running though. Big Grin
  • 2 0
I've searched thru the article, where's it say that?? Crazy... Now that's interesting!
  • 2 0
They removed it! It was under a picture (also removed) of somebody with white boxxer lowers, and the caption read something like "...was running white boxxer lowers...also has ohlins damping, stay tuned for an update". It was there when the article was on the front page soon, hopefully we'll get some info!
  • 3 0
my bad parkourfan, I must have seen this after the boxxer ohlin bit was removed

 Gwinduro?
  • 3 0
 nice one........
  • 6 0
I'm not sure if this says more about Gwin, or more about the Enduro?
  • 4 2
What it does say is that he signed a frame-only contract and ends up riding another frame. Pretty funny
  • 1 0
 Arduro?
  • 3 0
Does this mean I can put a fox 40 on my enduro without voiding my warranty (not that I would)?
  • 5 0
Well thats the enduro evo not the enduro, the evo has 180mm of compared to the 160mm of the enduro. And putting a fox 40 on an enduro evo wouldnt void the warranty as specialized say you can +or- 20mm of travel.
  • 1 0
also the fox 40 Gwin is using has been custom made and shortened to 180mm travel. If you go putting a fox 40 off the shelf on your enduro it probably would void the warranty. I pretty sure.
  • 8 2
^^" I'm not sure if this says more about Gwin, or more about the Enduro?"

or less about the Demo....
  • 3 0
An enduro frame with a dual crown fox 40 is hardly an "enduro bike"... Having a full on dual crown DH fork makes a huge difference over a single crown and sort of makes up for the compromise of shorter travel in the rear, even if the fox 40 is shortened down to 180mm travel, it's still a DH fork.
  • 9 1
15 yaers ago most of the DH bikes had 150mm travel. Why can't a 180mm bike be used racing DH nowdays just because the majority have 200mm? Let the man use the bike he feels is best for him.
  • 2 0
i really do wonder if/when he is going to be on a demo. this is very very interesting to me...
  • 2 0
How is Specialized going to handle their highest profile DH rider NOT riding their purpose built DH bike, regardless of the reason? It would be like Tiger Woods using Nike basketballs to play golf (though not nearly as extreme of an example, obviously).
  • 3 0
Its whatevers faster dude! The enduro evo hes set up with is just as capable really cause it has 27.5 wheels and 180mm. Thats pretty similiar to 26 wheels and 200mm. The big difference is that the enduro is waay more pedal friendly and just faster. If you were racing, would you race a slower bike? And for the gnarlier tracks, i bet spesh is gona whip out a redisigned Demo 27.5.
  • 6 0
 That's the 2015 demo Wink
  • 1 0
yeah but when you have a pro athlete go form one bike (trek) and dominate the races to a a new team using a demo and get dominated by the races then switch to a different frame within your lineup and take the first win of the season - it makes your flagship DH race bike look bad. i really do hope he gets a win on the demo. and i know there is A LOT more to it than just that but...just surprising that he is still on the short travel frame this round (at least in practice/qualifiers thus far)
  • 1 0
Agreed. I wouldn't be surprised to see a significant redesign in the near future.
  • 2 0
Does anybody know if we can watch this live on pinkbike or anywhere else? Id love to watch #gwinduro live.

  • 7 2
Eddy you father fugging freak your half the reason i'm so pissed!
  • 8 0
Hands down the best post run quote ever.
  • 7 2
Me and my friend have this theory. That Specialized is trying to up sales on the Enduro frames/bikes by showing that they are indeed downhill capable.
It does not end there however, when the time comes for a more rough track with bigger boulders and general gnarl, Specialized riders will show up with some kind of new generation Demo frame. Maybe something similar to what the spyshots from last year showed, maybe something not even seen on spyshots...
But this is the way we figured it. Only time will tell if we are right.
  • 1 1
Thought this too. Sometime throughout the season they'll prob release a Demo 650 B, by that time loads of Enduros will have sold and then the rest of the new bike brigade will pick up the new Demo. Market covered!!
  • 2 2
Yes! It might even be a 650B Demo, maybe!
I have not thought too much about that part, but it would be inline with what alot of the other manufacturers are doing/testing.
  • 1 1
Everything they make will be 650b, including the Demo.
  • 1 0
That would be a bold move.
  • 1 2
I want to see a frame/fork combo that will accommodate either wheelsize with only a few adjustments and, of course, a wheel swap. Play days AND race days with one frame!

I'm sure its only wishful thinking.
  • 1 0
tr500 does this. But fork offset is fixed, you'd need 2 sets of lowers, or 2 forks...or ride your 26 with the extra offset. Can't be that bad, old monster T had more offset than a 650b fork and aside from weighing a ton it worked.
  • 1 0
@thrasher2 How about a scott gambler with an x-fusion rv1? Both can fit 650b and 26!
  • 1 0
Ibis Mojo HD as well. Some people have converted the Scott Voltage too.
  • 1 0
Would you really change wheels between 26" and 650B as a privateer riding your local trails and or some competitions every now and again? Would you be able to benefit from it?
I find it hard to believe that this would be appealing for the vast majority of riders?
  • 1 0
well, most probably wouldn't bother alternating, but why not have that option built in to the frame? really its just a bb drop that changes between the two wheelsizes. You'll def feel a difference between the 2 sizes, youre not only adding rotating weight with a 650b wheel, but you're moving that weight even further from its point of rotation.

Why can't anyone covering races ever get Dave's nationality right!?
  • 2 0
I was gonna comment saying that so i looked through to see if anyone else did. Get it right Nathan he's not a little Kiwi!
  • 2 0
This needs more upvotes!!! i was also outraged and looking for this comment...
  • 7 1
The Demo must officially suck! If Gwin is riding and Enduro over it.
  • 3 2
Honestly, I really dislike the Demo. Not that I'm a pro, but having ridden an both the Demo and the Aurum, the Norco felt much much better to me.
  • 6 0
 beautiful action shots !
  • 1 0
You know, now that it looks like Gwin is back in good form, maybe it wasn't the ultra-short Chainstays of the Demo. The Enduro hes on has even shorter chainstays. However, the BB is higher than the ultra-low BB on the carbon Demo. Maybe that has something to do with it.
  • 4 0
CAIRNAGE!! Looks like this is going to be a world cup to remember!
