Race Face's President Purchases Easton Cycling

I am elated by the outcome,” says Tutton. “The Easton brand is synonymous with world class product and I am excited by the opportunity to renew the entrepreneurial roots of the brand and re-focus on technology, quality and service.

While Race Face and Easton Cycling now share a President, they will continue to operate as separate entities. A shared cost/service resource agreement will be implemented where deemed to be mutually beneficial to both brands.

The shared resources agreement will allow both companies to take precious resources spent on overhead and drive those dollars back into innovation in cycling” says Tutton.

Under Tutton, Easton Cycling will invest in an R&D Service Center, based in California, which will house wheel service, wheel testing and the Easton Engineering team. Under the shared resource agreement, the recently launched Race Face wheel program will also be developed and serviced from this facility. Easton Marketing will relocate to the Race Face head office in the greater Vancouver area of British Columbia; hiring announcements to follow shortly. Easton Global Sales and Customer Service departments will also relocate to the BC office.

 it means they can stop putting money into entering the wheel market since they just came into holding almost a monopoly on it (in the OEM market at least- ENVE may hold the monopoly on aftermarket wheels but they are just too damn expensive to spec).

 Wtf, Enve no where holds the aftermarket wheel monopoly, that would be insane. You might see them on a very few bikes, run into a few adverts, and you might want them, but that doesnt mean anything. Think of all the other brands that you have forgotten.. And about wheels failing, you have to take into consideration the market representation. Enve holds very very tiny of the market, while Easton, or Mavic for example are seen much more frequently. So it really isn't too fair to say you've seen 1 Total Enve wheelset that didnt break then 100 Easton wheelsets and where 2 broke. Btw, this news is Cray Cray. I saw this on the front page and my jaw dropped.

 I think he meant Enve has the monopoly on aftermarket carbon wheels, not all wheels. I'm still have no idea if its accurate to say that, but it makes more sense that way.

 There isnt a carbon wheel monopoly but Enve is the king in the sense that their product is considered top of the range and most desirable. Not to mention in the last few years they have fueled the carbon wheel movement and are more recognizable than any other carbon component manufacturer out there. Raceface is picking up easton to make wheels or they may erase the brand but take it intellectual property and assets.

 Got Haven carbon rims and they are amazingly good. 1400g for a bomb proof set of go any where do any thing wheel, doesnt come much better than that. And please get over the Easton need new hubs crap its getting old, theyve sorted it, the hubs on my wheelset have been faultless and ive ridden them into the ground.

 And zer0c00l44 - how do you explain 2 sets at small workshop where my friend works? I see Easton wheelsets quite often there... not that many Mavics for instance. Go ask in workshops then talk that they sorted it out.

 I run an Easton Haven wheel set and have zero problems with my hubs or rims. Might I mention that I'm 225lbs and nothing is too gnarly for me. Couldn't/wouldn't need much better(more expensive).

 Quite frankly, I had a chance to buy a second hand Carbon Haven wheelset for a really great money (as for a carbon wheelset) but two independent mechanics told me: DON'T! There are two sorts of people who can tell by statistics what fails or not: mechanics and warranty people. Opinion of single clients is next to irrelevant. There's plenty of all sorts of Easton front wheels on ebay sort of places, where did all the rear ones go? If they made them 28 spokes then you could at least get your own hub, but in such circumstances, bye!

 Your talking about isolated incidents, in the scope of things im sure the same example can be made for all manufactures. And these are not the 1st set of Easton wheels ive had either I might add, I only buy Easton wheel sets and have never had a single problem and I am also 224 lbs and ride the wheels hard over all sorts of terrain. How do you explain that? Surely the law of averages says with all the sets of Easton wheels ive had, I should have had a problem by now, or am I just super lucky?

And there a very good chance that the wheel sets you saw are the problematic ones and the owners have not fitted the FREE hub upgrade kit isnt there. Since the whole shonky hub debarkle it has indeed been rectified for future hubs.

 ENVE is a small player in the overall carbon fibre wheel market Wink

if you include road cycling (which must be included because its a much, much larger wheel market than the mountain bike wheel market) then ENVE barely figures?

#1 is Mavic by a long way then ZIPP, Shimano, Roval, Fulcrum, Easton, etc...see a lot more sales of those wheels to customers than ENVE

 Maybe Easton will finally reply to rear hub issue on the haven. 2014 brand new havens, 5 rides and the rear hub is shot.

 Hopefully they will develop an entire drivetrain. How about a somewhat lightweight 5 or 6 speed internal DH hub? Too heavy? How about 3 or 4 speeds?

I just want to see the rear mech gone without having to have a dedicated frame for it.

 Freerideguy: easton basically did a recall on rear haven hubs a while ago. Just call and say you need the bearing upgrade and they will send it out free of charge. They didn't even ask me for proof of purchase or to go through a dealer. They even sent bearing tools. Not sure if this will change now that RF owns them?

 Two thoughts come to mind...
Will bike companies like Intense using Easton Aluminum start having complete RaceFace spec on their bikes...
And I wonder what the RaceFace timeline & strategy is for the absorption of the Easton name & product lines.
Will they merge the names for a short time "RaceFace/Easton" or will they simply drop the Easton name in 24 months or so but continue to keep and market product lines such as Haven & Havoc??? Or will they keep two nearly identical & competing companies??? time will tell...

 Looks like they have sold a few Next SL and Sixc cranksets, so now they are eligible to buy a leading bike part company.

 Yeah, but they had to replace all those 1st gen Next SL's that broke. Meanwhile my alloy Dues XC keeps on trucking, and those Turbine cranks look awesome.

 I also have the Deus (2nd gen) and am loving it... apart from the fear of the alloy bolt stripping. So far the nicest aluminum cranks I have had to date, and I have been in the game since '96. I also believe that these were some of the last ones made in Canada.

 And the sell off of Easton continues, only thing left is a failing hockey brand and a football helmet that you could get free if you agreed to take on all the lawsuits directed at it. Only downside to this deal is the fact you do not own the rights to the name and will have to licence it. Still a solid acquisition that will benefit both brands.

 Yea they are, but that was just sold to Bauer Performance Sports, sale closed last week. So now Bauer Performance Sports is very strong in the Baseball industry. They purchased the name EASTON as well, so all companies using the name going forward have to pay a licensing fee to Bauer to do so.

 Easton pretty much owns the non-wood baseball and softball bat market don't they? I know there are other brands that make good bats but Easton has by far the most market share right? I haven't used anything but an Easton bat since I was 15, playing baseball and then softball since. I've tried others but Easton always perform the best.

 Easton is vert strong in the little league composite and aluminium baseball market and are very strong in women's fast pitch as well. Slow pitch softball they are not as big though

 They are very strong in the slow pitch market as well. Thats what I play now and I'd say they definitely have a good portion of the market share. Definitely the most common bats for slow pitch as well. And like I said, to me the reason is simple. The stuff just performs the best. I've tried Demarini's, Worth's, Miken's etc and while they are good, they just never matched Easton IMO.

 I can vouch for Easton my Easton rival is the most all time bat I've ever used... My travel team is bassically run by Easton equipment....... the reasons why: their catchers equipment..... Prime..... Their batting gloves... Mint.... Their bats.... MONEY AF..... Their gloves.... SOLID..... Their helmets.... Freaking sick...... And their grips.... Sex....

 Easton and Raceface makes really nice componentry (love my Atlas cranks), but Easton wheels are a lame proprietary set up and seem to fail a lot, and neither company seems to be addressing the trend of wider rims. Would love it if these two can bring about some new affordable, tubeless ready wheelsets with wider rims to the market, but I can't say I'm optimistic. If the quality of their components were maintained across the wheel options I'd be all over them.

 My friends have had their hubs screw up by bad design, and the mechanics at my LBS hate them. I've also read bad reviews. I heard that recent updates fixed the hub issues, so maybe you're benefitting from that, or just found a good set. None of this fixes the issue of proprietary spokes and narrow inner widths. That said, they are beautiful, and I appreciate the UST rim a lot as taping just never feels right.

 Easton wheels are pretty good and really good when bought at the huge discounts offered by some etailers. I would much rather have them that the mavic equivilents (I've had the mavics).

The bearings in the rear hubs are a load of rubbish but Hope bearings fit and don't break the bank. Also Hope straight pull spokes fit and cost peanuts compared to mavic spokes. I also find it easier to get tires on and off. I've had no end of bother with mavic spokes and free hubs not to mention the cost of them!

 Race Face aluminum stuff is awesome, Easton carbon is awesome (except Next SL cranks-awesome). Hopefully, Race Face will use Easton's carbon know how to further improve their game and also incorporate SOME of their wheel tech (not hubs).

 The Easton people who are currently working in the Easton Bell Sports (BRG) office will stay there and work on Giro, Bell and Blackburn. The new Easton will add people and back fill roles out of the RF office in Canada. So nobody is out of a job and about 6 new ones are being created.

 Chriss Tutton is the president of BRG sports which owns Bell, Riddel and Giro. Yes he did bail Race Face and it looks like Race Face and Easton are going to make some wicked stuff. Funny they both make the same components.

 He's not the president of BRG sports. He worked for Easton Cycling but is the current president of RF.

 Even if he was president of BRG sports, a transaction like this would not be uncommon. When a larger company wants to divest a business unit, its not at all out of the ordinary for some executives/employees from the company who work closely with the unit purchase it. He of course would not be the one negotiating the deal from BRG's side, someone else would, but it's wouldn't be weird if it did happen.

 this is my biggest question, too. There's a lot of overlap between these two brands, especially on the Easton side. Can't think of anything they make that RF doesn't except wheels. Whaterver, better get that orange Havoc stem I want while I still can...

 35mm clamp diameter, not length. It allows carbon bars to keep getting lighter without being too weak. Or at least that's the marketing. It seems to make sense.

 It allows both Carbon and Aluminum bars to get lighter without saccrificing strength. Aluminum is actually the biggest saving by going to 35mm, as the Atlas 35mm drops ~50g over it's 31.8 counterpart and gets 15mm wider at the same time.

 The race face turbine and easton haven have both been announced for 35mm bars. Neither appears to be available for purchase yet. These will be the first 35mm stems that are intended for trail riding rather than downhill/freeride.
