2007 Race Memories: Psychosis Kicked my you know what, and I liked it…

Last week I finally had the chance to get some rolls of film from the past few months developed.
Among the pile were pictures from this year’s ninth annual Mt. 7 Psychosis in Golden, BC. When they say that it is the world’s most demented downhill, they are not kidding! This is the second time I’ve been humbled by Mt. 7.

The first time I was at Psychosis, I was a first-year rider that thought she could ride anything. When I showed up at the top and saw hang-gliders taking off beside where I was supposed to ride, I burst into tears! Two years later the trail still took my breath away.
It starts off with a steep shale descent and then disappears from view. From then on you are riding the most steep, loose, and dusty single track I have ever seen. I should clarify, I have seen steeper sections of trail, but none that just keep going and going for minutes on end like “Dead Dog”.
After the steeps, the trail turns to fast beautiful single track that just keeps on going and going and going. Depending on who you are, the entire race can last from 12min49s, the winning time posted by Sam Hill, up to 28 minutes, which may or may not have been posted by me…
No matter who you are though, the race is a ton of fun. Everyone is challenged by the course and everyone feels the same sense of accomplishment when they ride under the Redbull balloon finish line.
A big thanks goes out to the Golden Cycling Club who puts on Psychosis. They work extremely hard to put such a huge and amazing event on and to make sure that everyone has a great experience. The Saturday night before the race they trucked hundreds of gallons of water to the top of the mountain and poured it down “Dead Dog” to help keep the 5 inches dust down!
They have put on an awesome event and I cannot wait for mark my calendar for next year.
There are a ton of pics on their home page at www.psychosis.ca.
