Randoms - Lourdes DH World Cup 2016

Apr 8, 2016
by Paul Aston
From reach adjust headsets to titanium nuts and bolts, World Cup downhill bikes are refined to the nth degree, leaving little to chance when pointed in the right direction. They're made with a single purpose - getting from the top of the mountain to the bottom, and as quickly as possible. We headed back to the pits to get a closer look at some of these awesome machines...

Syndicate Shenanignans

Minnaar s frame stickers
The Greatest Of All Time? Minnaar and Peaty have fresh frame stickers for Lourdes.
Peaty 23 years frame sticker
23 years, man and boy... This is a special year for this legendary racer from Sheffield, England.

Greg is testing out some new wheels from ENVE. Rim designer Eli says they should be almost impossible to pinch flat and should suit the stiffness and strength needs of their racers better than current production models. There's No word whether these prototypes will be making their way into the public hands.

Minnaar s ENVE King wheelset
It looks like Enve has some new DH wheels in the works...

Minnaar s ENVE King wheelset
Large cassette spacers may look cool and stop the chain going to far and into the spokes, but there's nothing lighter than plastic washers.

Peaty s reach adjust headset
Peaty is running an XXL V10 frame with a -7mm Chris King Buzzworks reach-adjust the headset.

Hemp oil
50/01 chain oil spotted on Marshy's table. 50 parts organic hemp oil with one part a magical secret element. How much more eco-friendly can you get?

Till Start Trainer

Expect to see a lot of these at the top of downhill tracks soon. The Till Start trainer is a mix of turbo trainer and rollers, weighs 6kg in total and comes with a backpack. Should make life easier for mechanics to have to haul heavy trainers to the top of the hill every weekend. They also come with customized graphics on the front board for added pimpness.

...as well as adding pins to his DX pedals for added grip.

Trek Bits and Bobs

Gee Atherton s Trek Session
What can Gee do on board the Session this season, one of the most winningest machines on the circuit?

POWA Dfender
A quality mudguard is essential this weekend, and few have the dimensions or DNA of the Powa Dfender.

Gee Atherton reach adjust headset
Gee Atherton is running a reach adjust headset on an XL frame.

Taylor Vernon s 2016 Trek Session.
This year will be crucial for the young Taylor Vernon, but we all know what he's capable of...

Funky Tharsis bolts
Funky bolts on this Tharsis stem.

That looks like a big dh wheel
Is it me, or does that wheel on the right look a little big?

Polygon United Ride Pits

Protoype BOS Stoy
All of the Polygon team are riding with new BOS Stoy or Void shocks, both share this new adjuster head.

31mm i.d. carbon wheelset from E 13
e*thirteen's 7-speed integrated cassette and a wider hub flange looks promising.

31mm i.d. carbon wheelset from E 13
Check out these rather apt looking 31mm i.d. carbon wheelset from e*thirteen.

Zefal Mudguard
An interesting mud guard from Zefal, note the small cutout near the fork arch to allow sticky mud to clear.

Gstaad-Scott

Neko s Deity cockpit on his 2016 Scott Gambler.
Neko's Gambler is dripping in precious metals... Cane Creek headset and a Deity bar and stem combo help keep this charger going in the right direction.

Neko s jockey wheels
Neko has some new machined jockey wheels from Ti-springs.

Neko's uses an XTR cassette to give even, two tooth jumps from 21 down to 11; many riders use a road cassette which has 1t increments, but Neko says he doesn't see the point in changing between such small gears. He also uses an extra 11t cog to improve chainline and a Zee shifter. Zee at World Cup level? Yes, because it only has one gear change per lever push where XTR or Saint can change two.

Neko s XTR cassette

Pretty colours
Brendan is using these funky coloured titanium bolts, also from Ti-Springs.

Bladed spokes for more compliance
Bladed stainless steel spokes for more compliance... When results are separated by hundredths of a second, every little helps!

Propain Dirt Zelvy Team

Innes Graham

Innes Graham reach adjust headset
Innes Graham has a custom reach adjust headset from Works Components with 7mm more reach, but with +1 degree steeper head angle.

Innes got some customized pedals for his last birthday from Crank Brothers. He also has a prototype coil shock from X-Fusion and custom dropouts to give a 455mm chainstay. Probably the longest on the circuit and Innes says its gives a much better front to rear balance.

Innes is also running a prototype X-Fusion shock... More on this soon!

Everything else...

Gazzy B
UK shredder, Gareth Brewin, is pinned and eligible for a national jersey, which is no small achievement being a Brit. He's driving the Atherton truck around Europe to make money to pay his racing way. Hopefully we will see him racing in Fort William...

I'm convinced that if pinkbike took the flags off the commenters names, half of the troll comments would dissapear. Lets all go for a ride. One love.

All I was trying to say is that must be one freaking long drive! And it is! Traversing that many countries in one car trip is a foreign concept for most people living on this side of the atlantic. There's nothing chauvinistic about that especially when one of the two borders we have is Mexico and can take up to 2 hours to cross. I can't imagine crossing 11! I would hope it is easier.

On a side note, if you want a ltitle lesson in French history, look up the word chauvanist. Pretty interesting stuff.

Go Rat boy! (- There's my flag if you want one pinkbike!)

@NimaG1310: actually after FDR died Truman became president and we was told vey little about the nuke. Ignorant to the destruction I t caused, as was 99% of the world, he gave the order to use it. I'm sure if the same situation had presented itself to the leader of any country with the promise of ending WW2 they would have done the same thing.
  • 4 0
Yes, surprising comment from someone in Great Britain. Apparently has no perspective on his own country's history, let alone what went down and why anywhere else in the world. Churchill would have dropped one on Hitlers head without a second thought had the opportunity been available. Instead, millions of people died, of which many were Americans fighting on behalf of Great Britain, and suffered as a result of a protracted land, air, and sea battles. Considerably more than two nukes of the type used then would have caused. It was the choice they then faced later in Japan. It wasn't the USA that snuck into a major port on a Sunday morning and tried to obliterate another country's Navy. Nobody dropped nukes in an opening salvo to conquer another country without provocation nor are they used to openly threaten another country into submission. Maybe you didn't realize that at the time Japan wasn't much different than Nazi Germany waging continental war against most of it's peaceful neighbors. I went to both Hiroshima and Nagasaki over two years on my first trip to Japan. I'm not ashamed to say that I cried during my tribute to the people who died there. As stated above, the average person in any country just wants to get on with their life. They often aren't to blame for the choices that politicians and militaries make. They do endure the results of those choices though. It's sad that even one bomb had to be dropped, let alone two, before Japan would accept that they were engaged in a war against a large part of the world that had become unwinnable. The people who live in either country today aren't to blame for what happened then.
  • 1 1

The whole "cut spikes" think still baffles me. For as often as we see riders running cut spikes, can someone please explain to me why the tire manufactures can't just develop a tread pattern that mimics the cut spikes? I have to me missing something here.
  • 7 5
My guess is that tread patterns are proprietary and if a sponsored racer likes another brands tread.... Snip snip
  • 4 7
imagine the thickness of the insert mold required to leave a gap that thin on a spike, sorry man not possible. I guess having an operator cut them manually post molding would be a viable option but does the volume really justify having an extra operator?
  • 32 0
Tread depth is personal, and creating a tire mold for every riders preferred cut for dry/moist/slop/Rock/Smegma race condition is not a smart business move.
  • 10 1
And if there's enough mud to warrant a mud spike, why cut them down? Maybe in the rear for better rolling resistance? I ride in the mud maybe once a year so I'm probably missing something.
  • 5 1
 this^^^^
  • 18 1
@Alias530: rocks and roots, spikes slip on them easy but if you cut them it helps. still grips and sheds mud the same but not as sketcky on rocks etc. Maxxis shorty is basically a cut spike off the shelf.
  • 4 0
The Maxxis Shorty and the Specialized Hilly Billy were designed and created to prevent racers from running cut mud spiked tires like the Wet Scream. What I don't understand is why racers still cut Schwalbe Dirty Dan's when you could just use a Magic Mary with the middle knob cut out (to clear mud better).
  • 4 0
Magic marry side nobs aren't the same as a spike, the shortys are so Schwalbe riders are still cutting
  • 10 1
The biggest reason they cur their spike is because full length spikes are squirmy on hard packed surfaces. Unless it is a true mud fest like Carins was a few years ago they cut them for mixed conditions. Try a spike on a hard packed berm, it feels like you have a flat tire and is terrifying!
  • 7 0
@robway: Yea I get why they cut the spikes. I was just more asking why they can't just produce a similar tire with shorter spikes to save all the work.
  • 5 0
@sino428: I'd guess it's because racers will want different depth spikes left over in different conditions. It's not binary like long or cut. It's long, cut a bit, cut a bit more, cut a lot, cut loads etc.
  • 1 0
I guess it is also a question of reducing tire types which keeps the cost of storage low. If you have cut spikes you cannot add anything if needed. I am sure numbers justify it. I still feel bad when I see they throw something away...
  • 1 0
The whole reason is that you can't cut it longer. It's always easier to take more off.
  • 1 0
@sino428: As mentioned before, there are some available, like the Maxxis Shorty.
  • 1 0
Same reason any decent racer would probably get their shocks tuned. Too many variables to cover over a product range that is around 3 or 4 models

  • 6 1

  • 2 1
@xy9ine: It's already been tested and rejected.
  • 3 0
@Srnunez: judging by the hubs and tires I'd say it's probably Gee's. I could see him rocking a 29er DH bike as long as it's faster.
  • 7 0
@Srnunez: Front and rear wheels have to be the same size per the rules.
  • 3 0
@pcloadletter: Really? Do you have a source?

@arnoldtm2 Trek is the only manufacturer around that has a known 29er prototype, so would make sense
  • 5 0
@hamncheez: Somewhere deep in the UCI rule book. It applies for road bikes, so I don't know about mountain bikes
  • 1 0
 Where?
  • 1 0
@xy9ine: with the speed of tracks going up and less slow/tech ur probably right
  • 13 0
So from that article either 1- frames are now not being made long enough or 2- half the World Cup circuit has grown in a year
  • 3 0
well, Peaty & Beaumont are running their headset cups in the short position. Plus, these cups allow the racer to dial in their reach preferences, which could change from track to track. Perhaps the bike feels better in the long position, sometimes neutral, sometimes in the short position. It just gives them the options.
  • 1 0
@ka-brap: Racers have been riding longer and longer bikes for years. The XXL V10 from a few years back is now an L. Reach headsets are a way to test whether or not it is worth making a longer frame especially if it is carbon fibre like the V10. The Scott Gambler has increased by 15mm two years in a row i.e. the one Brendon is running is 30mm longer that the first version of the new gambler which came out in 2012/3.
  • 1 0
@SintraFreeride: I know bikes have been getting longer, but your argument doesn't explain why riders run cups in the short reach setting. If it was simply to test whether or not it is worth making a longer frame, then Santa Cruz would think they made a mistake on the XXL since Peaty is running his -7mm. Ultimately, it is a tool to find/dial in the right reach for each individual racer. The frame gets dialed through a fitting process that is much more in-depth than what a reach headset alone can determine. All the reach headset does is fine tune the reach for a specific track/racer preference. Will that data be used in determining the next generation of frame? Most certainly, but it's only one variable.
  • 1 0
@ka-brap: maybe a longer front helps with the overall balance of the bike but reduced reach headset makes it better for the feel of the rider. Everybody is shaped different so things like that personalise the bike to suit the individual rider. All I know for sure is it doesn't matter what I done I would still get smoked by these guys.
  • 2 0
Maybe I'm missing something because this seems like a simple answer. Longer frames mean they can run longer wheelbases without having to make the front end slacker. It's to the point now that the frames are so long, that they actually need a negative headset to have the right reach. That's what I assumed at least.
  • 1 0
@friendlyfoe: A reach headset set in the short position will decrease the wheelbase as well. The point of reach headsets is to allow better fit on frames especially for people who are between frames.
  • 14 1
Damn. I can't wait anymore. I'm getting nervous. Super excited.
  • 11 3
Love Aterthons Trek, however the mud guard is hideous, why not a simply Marsh guard?
The stem needs to be turned outwards to allow more leverage for those wide bars as well.
  • 7 0
Probably an example of function over form.
  • 8 1
Damnit trek, I love your bikes, bit you need to switch up the colors. Red black and white. Red and black, red and white. NOT CUTTING IT! Did you see that demo!
  • 13 1
I think it's more of the Atherton's choice on the color scheme. R-Dog, Semenuk, Rheeder, and the Trek freeriders all have pretty awesome color schemes on their Sessions.
  • 2 0
Or atleast paint their bike differently for 2017 maybe?
  • 7 0
The Trek is gorgeous. Can't agree with you on that. But that Specialized - also hot.
  • 2 0
@bobinitacnh: I was referring more to the WC.
  • 2 0
All of Trek Factory Racing bikes share the same color scheme. Unless you're on the women's side of the program, in which case you get baby blue. The same color scheme is used for the road division as well, with the exception going to the road superstars like Fabian and Jens who seem to get unique paint schemes.
  • 4 0

I think that hole on the Zefal Mudguard is another mounting hole depending on where you want to put the zip-ties? Not exclusively for clearing mud. I've got my Zefal in that front position on my 29er. Works a treat in the swamp that is Scotland at the moment.
  • 1 2
Yes they are just mounting holes so you can mount it properly depending on the crown to lower offset.
  • 6 1
Its not a great description, but they are referring to the cut outs at the side rather than the extra zip tie slots.
