Red Bull Rampage 2014: Finally the Finals Photo Epic

RED BULL

THAT'S IT, THAT'S ALL

RAMPAGE

Those who were able to stick around for the delayed Red Bull Rampage finals here in Virgin, Utah were greatly rewarded today; the riders threw down on quality dirt and in perfect weather. The Red Bull flags at the top of the course flapped in the wind as riders dropped in continuously to the shock and amazement of everyone, producing big tricks and big crashes. The camaraderie that had grown between organizers, athletes, media and fans, in thwarting Mother Nature and ending this season with a bang despite the difficulties of flash floods and lightening could be felt in the air. Spirits were high as Andreu stoked the crowd on his victory lap and Zink high fived the audience after his 3'ing his drop. Kids navigated the finish corral asking for autographs of their heroes and not wanting the event to be over yet. We felt the same way as we drove away one last time on the dusty and windy road. Exhausted from the last few days and looking forward to being home at the end of a long season, our team was still sad to have it behind us. We find ourselves already talking about what next year may bring.

 Last thing about judging.
1 - scores given to Norbs and Andreu show that they wanted to redeem their judging from previous years... I even think that they scored Strait lower cause they know that last year was actually not his to win (McGaaaza/Zink)
2 - if industry and society knows your nickname, it means that you deserve extra points. If I compare "Herb's" run and (just) Szymon Godziek's run, I see this "unfairness". You can even see it in photo subtitles: Szymon's was like "regular walk on the street - everybody does that and it is nothing special" and Herb's was like "OMG! What a style and streezzz! These guys push the sport to another level with tricks like that".

...and now I'll go to drink some sweet banana juice cause that judging at Rampage made me bitter!

....and don't get me wrong, Andreu deserved the win....the point margin is just unjustified!

 BAD! BAD POTATO!

Really though, you're seriously over thinking things. Maybe Norbs got a better run this time around because he deserved it and the judges realized that. Maybe they scored Andreu so high because he finally stomped his desired run (last year his second run wasn't counted but was easily considered one of the best runs). Comparing results to PB image descriptions? haha this is hilarious. Where's my tinfoil hat? But really though, if you knew a bit about how they judged these events, the results wouldn't surprise you but would rather give you hope for this event to continue onward.

But hey, opinions are like a*sholes, right?
  • 24 6
You just proved point 1 by saying that Andreu was scored so high cause he FINALLY FINISHED his line and his run LAST YEAR was amazing....
I just can't get out of my head this feeling that there at the top, within judges were some "The Fest series" producer/beneficiaries;]

I guess I need more banana juice ;]
  • 41 2
out of the gate andreu was going noticeably faster than anyone. i think he took it because of his complete lack of hesitation for any of it, most other riders had at least a few sections where they had to creep slowly. fast and huge FTW
  • 29 2
Give the conspiracy theories a rest everyone, it's just riding bikes. Judges aren't perfect, nobody is, Andreu had a Damn near perfect run though! Especially when you see the POV
  • 35 1
Also guys don't forget the judges made a rod for their own backs by scoring Aggy's qualifying run so high. He and Andreu had the same line so if they both stomped it then obviously the judging needs to be consistent. I don't think Andreu's score should have been so much higher than the others but I think its more of a case that the judges should have scored Zink etc higher to maintain the consistency throughout the whole of Rampage. The most disappointing thing for me was not the judging but the fact that Van Steeze just missed out on lading that front flip. Kid is a baller!

Kid is a baller. He was so close to pulling off the sickest stunt in MTB history. Van Steeze! Who cares about the rest of the judging. They all win.
  • 24 2
More importantly. Who is Brendan Fairclaw? never heard of this guy before, they said he races world cups? What do we need to do to get Warner to commentate on these things? Or maybe some former riders who know what they are talking about rather than people who scream buzz words and jump to conclusions
  • 5 0
Yeah I forgot about that! Fucking Fairclaw.

I think Andrew can be winner with his first ride, as can be Zink with his first or Semenuk with his second, but what,s about 2 round of Andreu?? i think nobody can win if can´t do two rounds, if you can control your mind in a comp....please, stay at home in your bikepark, don´t try to make a comp.......is the difference between comp and freeriding.....all sports have incredible freeriders that are bad competitors and conversely.....but this is a comp....
  • 4 0
Namor...try to see it from the riderrs perspective.
Andrew scored 7 or 8% more than everybody else...if Zink and Semenuk didnt pass him on the second run...it was very unlikely that the other riders did...i know it sounds disrespectfull for the others riders, but he decided not to risk his life again
  • 5 0
the judges arent losing any sleep over their job. quantifying something that is near impossible to place a metric on. now if the purse was $50k i imagine they'd get a bit more specific. but thats sort of what i like about rampage. it's qualitative and relative..artwork
  • 4 0
Namor - think you're forgetting that these guys are putting their life / careers on the line riding rampage. The wind was picking up and as Andreu said himself "he was shitting his pants" on his first run, something also relayed by Zink about his own run....I'm glad he exercised caution in the end, rather than doing a second run that would have made no difference to the results and could have ended badly.
  • 11 3
I think next year, REDBULL should run a contest where one lucky PB member gets flown down and gets to be a judge in the contest. The only catch is that you need write an article on the scores you gave riders and why you gave it to them. Now that I would like to see that, the comment section would be epic.
  • 2 1
Namor, think about Semenuk at Joyride. He also didn't do his second run and i think hes a good competitor.
  • 2 0
Couldn't agree more, a pointless second run would have been beyond stupid! He should have been carried down by the chopper while drinking a MASSIVE beer.
  • 4 3
Last year I was the first person to say here on Pink Bike that Norbs got robbed by the judges. My one claim to fame. This year the judges did an excellent job! Props! to you guys.
  • 2 2
Above, I mean the year before.

Just to reply to the original comment: Strait totally deserved the win last year. Pure gnar top section that he rode fast and effortlessly. Compare him coming down it to Zinc and you can see how flowy he makes that terrifying line look. He then hit the biggest feature on the course, and still did tricks further down. The entire run was flawless and ticked all the judging boxes: line choice, speed and fluidity, and amplitude and style. Nobody consistently ticked them in their run as much as Strait.

Zinc: Not as smooth or confident in upper section. Yes, backflips the sender but then nothing for the rest of the course.

McGazza: Got marked down for too much traversing to get to the canyon gap on an 'easy' ridge line, even though had a sick off-axis flip on the way it doesn't compare to Zinc/Strait goat-path. Yes massive flip over the canyon, but then got a bit wobbly on the step-down after that and got off his line so didn't hit his last two jumps. Doesn't matter how you look at it, that drops points.

Result? Strait clear winner.

As for 2014: Lacondeguy's score seemed a little high, but it's the same as Strait the year before. No hesitation coming in to any features, hit some *massive* stuff, the whole time with wicked speed - fastest down the hill I swear - and still had style and amplitude for days. Deserved winner.

i thought rheeder's score was way too low. his run was buttery smooth and deserved better than 5th
  • 4 5
Szymon didn't get robbed. His line before the canyon gap was nothing to shout about. Jeff's line was overall just better, no question about it. Put your national pride bull shit to the side and look at the bigger picture. Jeff Herbertson is a NOBODY compared to Szymon. Jeff outscored him, and did it at an event that is put on by Szymon's primary sponsor.

  • 4 1
 that front flip doe
  • 1 3
I agree with badpotato, Symon had robbed, I'm mexican son there's no national involve on it. Symon line was more balanced because he had more complex tricks in difrent zones than Paul B's Chubbey's Jeff's or even Zink's ONE trick line that's whyhe was robbed. His line deserve at least 5th
  • 5 0
What about Semenuk? 89.2 between 89.5 and 89.0 - seriously, they just didn't know where to put him, that shows the idea of judging
  • 4 1
Semenuk got robbed for sure. But everyone was riding incredibly good so it's really tough to judge.

Aggy won it on Sunday and Andreu won it on Monday. We got a double winner here.

 - Andreu scored to high but a deserved win for just smashing the course.
- Zink scored way too high again for a one-trick pony albeit with a technical line up top thrown in this time.
- Strait scored too low I think, his run was super gnar from top to bottom and had some big tricks.

McGazza should have been disqualified for proving he's actually a cyborg and therefore shouldn't be competing... nobody just walks away laughing like that after stacking a 72ft gap . :-P

Definitely an amazing Rampage and glad to see no serious injuries this time

What an amazing event, the level of riding has reached a new level. Part of me thinks Kelly McGarry should have won best trick after he popped right up with a smile after his scary crash on canyon gap.  i would love to see a news section on Pinkbike that has updates on injured riders. How is everyone doing? Louis Reboul, Tom van Steez, KC Deene?? I'm sure there's more dudes injured just after this one event. With all the gnar going on all year in our sport it would be cool to keep tabs on how the injured athletes are progressing: Micayla Gatto, Martin Soderstrom, Stevie Smith, the list goes on! There was even a fatality at the UCI XC event in France - hardly a mention of Anne-Fluer except in the photo epic where there was a shot of the riders having a minute of silence in the start corral!
Also, it should go without saying that news goes beyond the bloody and the broken; but the PB community cares about the athletes in our sport and I'm surer I'm not the only one who is curious about how these fine folks are doing.
Thanks PB and Redbull for the coverage!

andreu rode on a different level than anyone else. he rode faster, harder, and smoother than anyone and made some insane terrain look easy. contrary to what the "announcers" wanted you to believe, it was not a contest to see who could throw the sickest trick off of a wood feature. it was a freeride comp and andreu was in a league of his own
  • 13 0

  • 6 0
I was rooting for Andreu and I'm rly happy for his win, but, one thing I don't get, watching the event live, how where the judges seeing the complete runs of the riders from top to bottom because the lines where all over the place, did they have video feeds from cameras all over the course or what?
  • 5 0
Thats really interesting question, I would also like to see some after contest summery from them, justifing why was someones run scored higher than other. I also think that rampage have the most questionable judging. Look at some slopestyle contests, everyone is riding the same line and it still isnt always clear whose run is better.
  • 5 4
"did they have video feeds from cameras all over the course or what?"

No, they were watching it on the RedBull website and if there was a problem with their internet connection they didn't give the rider any points...
Of course they had live feeds from all the cameras, it's the same in every professional sport (apart from football).

I like the best trick/overall split.

Last year I felt like Cam should have gotten best trick and probably 4th over all. This year from what little I've seen I like the way things played out. Cam is always throwing down the gnar. Dude has some of the biggest nuts on earth. Not just in the world of MTB but in the world.

I look forward to digging through more photos and more video. The course lay out looked bonkers. Hitters freaking everywhere.

It was nice to see them take a step back and extend the event to get people runs. Had they done that last year I'm not so sure that Tyler McCaul isn't sitting on the podium.

Nice to see the event taking in rider input and input in general. Looked like a solid event.

Glad most folks are on two feet after this one.

There wasn't 2nd run. On RB page in the scorring tab his 2nd field is empty. Fine - he did not do it for some reason, BUT - why the f*ck they did not mention a single word about it during the live coverage? f*cked up scorring rules in my opinion, if there are any at all... Red Bull sponsored riders seem to gain extra points just for that...

I was wondering the same as it wasn't mentioned during commentary. My guess was he knew that he couldn't really improve on his first run, as he had nailed it, so wasn't going to improve his score by going again. Who knows?

Slight case on the canyon gap the wind was picking up and two people crashed pretty bad on it. That and he got scored pretty low. His line was tight but he rode a little slow maybe.

Szymon was robbed, his score from the qualis was higher but his run during the finals was way better ( two flips, one nohander ). He deserves at least 80 points for this run. Andreu line was perfect, so stoked to see him at the first place. We can all tell (according to his reaction) that his dreams came true. I think that winning the rampage is his most wanted trophy...

Zink shouldn't rob Brandon of hi5 - he was already robbed by judges: on.fb.me/1tdpYeZ

It was an amazing event with amazing riding, even from those who didn't qualify.
That being said, the announcing really detracted from it for me. Cramming as many buzzwords in as possible, obviously having little actual knowledge of mtb. It sounds like they attended a seminar before announcing to learn the lingo. Going on about sponsored features even when the rider wasn't hitting them, and not understanding riders lines. I don't expect them to know every trick name, but calling manuals speed wheelies and referring the the rear forks on a dh bike and constantly mentioning they have suspension was a bit much. Surely there is a better group off riders that can do announcing for the event?!

Anyone know what happened to Louis Reboul? Is he alright after that huge crash on the canyon gap?

 from his fb :

"Hi all, Thanks for you messages!! I have nothing broken and I'm happy to be alive... #Rampage was totally insane for me and was the best experience in my life.. Thanks @juleslangeard @peferry and @thomasgenon for helping me today "

his bike after the crash:

Hey PinkBike you are wrong. It should be Norby not Norbs. Why? Because the Red Bull rampage commentators said so!

/LOL
  • 3 1
 The commentators suck!
  • 1 1
Seriously... wtf who are these judges???
I mean like always norbs got kinda robbed... but brendogs ratings got raped....
AAnnd... who put that music in there???
it made everything less spectacular
I really just had to complain about those judges...(well.. and the commentating... it already has been said often enough)
However those runs were extreamly sick.. love rampage

I want a picture of Brendan not gettin the high five from Zink

How someone can ride with such ability wearing skinny jeans is beyond my comprehension....
  • 2 0
Those announcers just went full kook on Norbs.. Never go full kook on Norbs...

@ chrispaulmtb: +7 bring in Warner to announce next year! And put the commentators on a tandem bike and send their asses off the fah-qing canyon gap!!!!!!
  • 1 0
When they kept sayin "Andreu Lacondeguy of Spain" over and over and over again I started to get really irritated of the commentators!
  • 1 0
You gotta love Rampage!! The comRADery amongst the riders is awesome! Esp. Semenuk! "I'm just happy to be out riding with my friends." Or something along those lines.
  • 3 0
 Nico Vink looked stoked

 the "Podium" picture is amazing

A well deserved win for Lacondeguy!
  • 2 4
...btw. the "bad-taste-award" on this years rampage goes out to the "mastermind" putting together that crappy piece of trophy. dude, you did an awesome job! none of a kind. oh, semenuk, now you got two o those. really sorry. ..haha.

Rampage judging the usual all over the shop. Thought the coverage was pretty poor too. Shame it doesn't do the gaps and drops justice

Uh, I don't think that is a rattlesnake. These guys don't really have a deathwish.

YT one and two. Maybe now PB will do a review.

I want a full replay. I barely got to watch Rampage!
  • 1 0
Little Zink on the podium already.
  • 1 0
How much were the checks they handed out? I hope a lot.
  • 1 0
I know Zink got $5000 for the best trick award, plus a sort of massive cassette with half a spade trophy to go on the mantelpiece.
  • 2 0
I guess 5 grand is ok for best trick but I think it should be 10x that for top step
  • 1 0
Last year first place won $25,000. I don't know about the top spot this year, but I know 4th place won $4,000.... It's a sad amount of money for the danger they put themselves through!
  • 1 0
I read an article as what, the cameramans get home with more money than mot of the riders !
  • 1 0
Camera men do make some decent money, but that's just ridiculous. We've got to figure out how to change that. This is a multi million dollar event. Doubling the or tripling the prize money wouldn't change the budget that much. These guys deserve to make a living. I say any rider invited should get something...a weeks wage? Commooonnnnn!
  • 2 2
 1.Rheeder 2.Strait 3.Lacondeguy 4.Zink 5.Semenek Thats how I feel watching it in person.
