Red Bull Rampage 2014: Looking Back - Rheeder

Oct 17, 2014
by Danielle Baker

bigquotesAfter my crash last year it was really hard coming back to compete in contests at this level. I almost felt incapable of doing final runs in the first few contests this year. But I shocked myself and am having one of my best seasons. My only goal [at Rampage] was to qualify into finals. I didn't want to push myself too hard, but I definitely wanted to make a cool line and scare myself a bit more than I ever have before in Utah.

bigquotesAs a new Rampage athlete, I blocked out the controversy, I didn't build anywhere that was questionable without asking another athlete for their permission, I helped the people who wanted to help me, and kept digging until it was finished. Rampage is a learning experience for all of us.

bigquotesMy crew, Harrison Mendel and Ben Schleith, and I worked with Kyle Norbraten and his dig crew. On the first day of scoping we both happened to be looking to go the same direction, so we teamed up to build and ride the whole top section.

bigquotesI had never really seen this zone before, but I knew that if the event organizers had chosen a new spot, it would be workable. All it meant for me was a fresh opportunity to make a good line, which was what I needed.

bigquotesThe mountain definitely had a gnarlier side to it. The rider's right side of the whole zone was steep and consequential. We wanted to keep it safe, but at the same time we knew that if I took rider's right and put together a good run that I would be in a higher scoring bracket.

bigquotesI was given a hard time from a few of the 'top' Rampage athletes about the number of sandbags we used to make our line safe and trickable in dangerous and exposed areas. I also got hassled about needing to use a short flat section of another athlete's line to connect my line together, this was an area that three or four different athletes needed to use. Even after asking for permission and offering to maintain that part of his line, I was still not welcome on it. Flat connecting areas on the ridge are fair game, and if other riders need to use a small section of trail on a flat area that someone else built, it should be no problem. No one should be giving anyone a hard time about small things like this, even if you are a two-time Rampage champ.

bigquotesI definitely held back on my tricks for Qualifiers, but that being said I wanted to ride as fast and smooth as I possibly could to show the judges I was ready for finals.

bigquotesAt a slopestyle contests it is like everyone is having fun, riding together, practicing tricks, taking breaks, and joking around. It is really awesome. It seems that, because there is no course at Rampage, everyone is trying their hardest to make their line the sickest possible in the small time frame that is given. If anyone was in need to cross an existing line or build in an area that someone has already dug in, there was controversy of some kind. Times are changing, the mountain can't get any steeper or taller, but riders will always be progressing. Having some wood and pre-built dirt features at Rampage is a good thing. The riding should do the talking, and not so much the line.

bigquotesI honestly did the best run I possibly could. The judges saw what I did in my run and it wasn't good enough for a podium spot. Maybe next year.

"No one should be giving anyone a hard time about small things like this, even if you are a two-time Rampage 'champ'." This. Arrogant riders in an area like this? What the hell?!

Rampage sounds like a prison in biking. It's about time for rivalry.
  • 14 8
Rampage shouldn't be about rivalry. Read norcalproduction's comments for the other side of the story.

Personally I think Rheeder was rhobbed.

Interesting. It seems that Pinkbike has quietly edited out the "two-time Rampage champ" bit, because I don't see it anywhere.

when you see skills like Rheeder`s sum up with his humbleness you get a real rider worth of being PRO.

ScandiumRider, it's still there. It's in the text box beside the picture of Rheeder standing in the street that is filled with water. It's the last line in the text.

Thanks @megaold, but now I'm even more intrigued... I used the find function in Firefox when I made my comment over two hours ago, and the only place the words "two", "two-time" or "champ" appeared on this whole page were in the comment section. Now it finds the "two-time champ" bit in the article itself. Did Pinkbike try to edit it out only to put it back when they got called out on it? Weird...

what happened to 2 wheels 1 love. I am so unimpressed with paranoid winners wearing coveted red bull attire....I mean whiners. I noticed when Brett killed it 2nd run NO ONE WAS HUGGING him or high fiving but when the huck mafia shows up they get jumped. I was embarrassed for the sport at that moment especially after his run with a cliff hanging flip up top.

@madmon Well if Rheeder comes across in person anyway like he does in this interview then it wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't the most popular guy among the other riders. Nobody likes a whiner. Those guys are buds, and I take it Rheeder isn't a part of that friendship...
  • 6 1
Agree, @madmon. Different attitudes for different dudes, but rheeder deserves no less respect than any other guy out there. Enough of the line choice crap. You'd think that these guys wouldn't be so proprietary and anal about protecting their lines. There is limited space on the hill, and particularly with the few wooden booters that everyone seems to try to make it to, of course there is going to be line overlap. Be a man and deal with it. Hug it out. I don't care, but don't subject people to this, or risk alienating much of the bike community. What many people like about it is the positivity, so keep that in mind.
"Huck mafia" - I like it. I noticed the overboard celebration too.

Rheeder is a class act....

Cuz I would've told Strait and the Norcal production crew to F#@K themselves with shovel handles. (With a big (Rheeder) smile of course)
  • 5 2
Zink and Straight are "grown men best friends" in case you missed them saying it in every single mtb video. I don't know why they keep emphasizing their relationship but it seems kind of weird. That's probably why Rheeder does not hug any of them at the finish line.
  • 62 9
So, Kyle Strait sounds like a knob..? Why's he even bothered, I thought he was all about the fishing these days? He is talking about Strait yeah?
  • 40 8
yeah ... i dont even rate kyle strait as much as fairclough, lacondaguyetc .... i think he gets good points cause its him. rheeder has a great attitudeproper humble guy he will win the fmb for sure in the next few years expecially if pilgrim does not step back up
  • 38 6
It's always good to listen to the other part [Kyle Strait], what he has to say about that sitiuation. People are subjective in their statements.
  • 48 2
Finally, it seems Wil White has an important ally within pro riders
  • 20 5
Not the first time I've read that Strait is a prick, got a lift across Europe from one of the UCi DH team managers as a favour and sat with headphones without a word of thanks. Could be wrong but 99% sure it was Will Longden that mentioned it
  • 6 0
@Borro True I'd like to hear more about the sitch but I doubt Rheeder would have done the same if it were the other way around.
  • 17 2
If Rheeder indeed used ~150 sand bags when each rider was allotted 30, that is wrong. But this is also not the first time I have heard Kyle is a dick. I think he is a bit high on himself.
  • 14 0
@zede I would consider Wil White a pro. Anyone who can compete in rampage is a pro. That said each year i hope he podiums.
  • 9 0
 @FlowMasterO
Yeah, you're totally right, I badly chose my words.
In fact, my point was just saying that Rheeder is a well known pro rider with big sponsors, so he gives kind of extra credibility to what Wil White said about rampage
  • 11 4
I met Kyle at Claymore Challenge at Highland a few years back and thought he was a super chill guy. All I said to him was good luck, he could've said thanks and kept on going, but he didn't. He stopped and shot the shit with me for 10 min or so. I really can't imagine the guy being the dick that people are trying to paint him as.
  • 9 0
Lots of people think I'm a dick, and they're probably right. But I like to think I just don't handle social situations well.
But if somebody wanted to cross a trail I built at rampage I'd be down cus you treat others as you'd want to be treated.
That said if I found out that a guy had used 150 sand bags to build his line and I had made do with 30 (I got these figs from csermonet) I'd be a bit annoyed.
  • 9 5
I don't know either of these guys personally, I don't even try and ride the same kind of stuff, but this shit needs to stop. Mountain biking should stay way more chill than "turf war" territory.

If you were playing by the rules and someone wasn't, you might want to try and make it harder on them. For instance, if he didnt use so many sandbags maybe straight would have let him use hit line.

Kind of a bitch move call straight out with the "champ" comment. If there was an issue they should have taken care of it out of the public eye.

  • 3 0

  • 2 1
I think the real reason Strait was cheesed off was because Rheeder took too many lunch boxes. It wasn't the sand bags. Merely the thought of someone taking his food is enough to make a fatty like Strait blow his top!
  • 73 42
As someone who was personally there digging, Rheeder and company did use far more (we counted around 150) then Redbull's previously allotted number of 30 per rider/team that they were vigorously enforcing, (checking out with signatures from the back of the Uhaul), the first few days. Not only that, some riders (Nicholi Rogatkin specifically), didn't even receive bags because they had none left. I can say personally that he cut through clearly marked and benched trail on the line we had dug to build his own line at the upper section, without talking to us, and then apologized when we confronted him. The line choice aspect of rampage is what the event is about. Letting tricks be the dominant aspect of this event goes against what it truly represents. I respect Rheeder, he is amazingly talented, but this article is pretty f*cking lame. Skewed stories that simply don't represent what was really happening at this event. Rheeder, don't take shots at someone who constantly outperforms you at this event, this is why the two time champ you speak of didn't let you swoop in on his line. Really disappointed in Rheeder for the way he represented himself at Rampage and in this article.
  • 43 2
Drama drama drama. I ride to get away from that shit. Pretty ballsy calling out a Kodiak bear in its preferred environment. I don't see this getting better with more money and exposure on the line. What happens next year when people still have their own lines from the year before? How can a rookie even build a unique line? I like the idea of a super slopestyle type event but, that ain't Rampage.
  • 7 4
Well if that's the case, Lyle was right. You definitely have to see both sides. And using more sandbags shouldn't be allowed. Each rider should have the same possibilitys.
  • 37 1
Yeah this leaves a baste taste from both sides of the argument. Just hearing that guys aren't getting along turns me off. Guess it happens all the way up through the big leagues. Grow the fuck up.
  • 28 1
So I assume Kyle had permission to hit Aggy's and Andreu's Big drop @ the end. You know the one he said he didn't hit till his first run.
  • 22 1
It is actually funny that I always liked mountain bike because it was driving me away from the girl's bitching and drama. But I guess I was wrong.
  • 8 0
Funny how much goes on behind the scenes at Rampage... For what we as spectators at home see, we don't even suspect any of this going on and just assume everything worked out fine. Thanks norcalproductions for the comment, it's cool to get an inside look of what REALLY goes on behind the lines. It's not always about the riding. For me, I respect a person for their character, not by what they can perform on a bike. What I've seen here just isn't cool, and isn't what mountain biking is about and frankly needs at any given time.
  • 4 2
Upper section or flat section? What does cutting through someone's line even mean? He crossed it?
  • 3 0
DARKSTAR63 hit the nail on the head. This aggression will not stand, man.
  • 34 3
I will elaborate because I am annoyed and concerned over this - Rampage is about the spectacle, the mountain, everyone there. They all win in my book. I honestly don't care who ends up on podium. Do these guys know that? I had this image in my head like everybody is friends and just there to survive it and push the sport, as a collective of the best riders on earth. Sadly, it seems this is not the case. Hearing about guys being overly protective of "their" lines really pisses me off. Maybe since guys want to be babies we change the rules again. No dig team, no pre-builds. Just show up and ride. Because we don't want to hear about this crap. This is not mountain biking.
  • 6 1
It's the biggest event of the year and they are putting their lives on the line. Add to that, unlike the bike park or local trails, there is only so much mountain to go around. Tough to be chill with that kind of pressure.
  • 2 1
This is bad for business. Mountain biking is and always has been a chill sport. Its something to be enjoyed with friends, not to piss and moan over and look at under a microscope to see who is stepping on whos toes. Keep the bitching out of mountain biking, lest we recruit those who bitch.
  • 11 0
It's not about being chill it's about having respect for others.
  • 1 0
do you guys think the issues could be addressed with a larger zone with more options or is it literally a participant and rules and regulations issue? is this just a rampage thing and these guys are usually cool with each other everywhere else? i didn't expect it to be all bros and beers up there (any comp event that is big) but mutual respect for each other as competitors has to be priority one. i definitely have my favorites but i really don't care who wins it as a fan. if it turned into just a 2day jam session and with that sold the vibe of what we love better so be it.
  • 2 2
 @MikeGruhler he did get permission
  • 3 1
The issue is that asking permission is easy. Giving permission is what decides if you are a dick or not. That doesn't make Strait look any better.
  • 12 7
Who's a better rep for our sport, Strait or Rheeder? Maybe Rheeder is playing humble because he is newer, but Strait doesn't inspire me to go ride, that's for sure. Plus he stole Aggy/Andreu's line. Norcalproductions, maybe you're just whiny like Kyle is.
  • 5 6
He didn't. He got permission to ride that drop. And a rep for the sport is a personal opinion. Straits riding gets me stoked.
  • 1 2
Thanks for sharing this. I am in full support of riders sharing lines at Rampage. It seems (from interviews and articles) that Andreu made it known he was down to collaborate with others on building huge features...the key being 'collaborating' a.k.a. helping to build those features. And sure, crossing a small section of trail doesn't seem like a big deal, but it's really easy to ask permission and put in an hour or two helping pack/maintain lips.
  • 2 0
Quick question (cuz it was mentioned I believe)...next yr, aren't all existing lines/segments a free for all?
  • 1 0
How was one able to take 150 bags, when the allotment was a paltry 30? Five times the allowance is not inconsiderable. Who's d1ck did he have to suck to achieve that? Or was it actually closer to 30...
  • 4 0
theres only so many lines down the hill.
Having been there building myself, riders need to get over it and share the flat connecting sections that will overlap because otherwise they are shafting the next rider that needs somewhere to go. Being territorial over your line just isn't the way to do things in this sport. You can clearly still win with shared sections of trail.

in regard to the sand bags, most teams went well over the allotment because of the short build time, partly due to the weather. A lot of guys just went to the local store and bought their own bags to make sure their line was built safely and quickly. I don't think that is the end of the world. Guys were out there with rock saws too, but in the end, the safely of the line takes priority over having something be "all natural". if they had a month to build then it wouldn't be an issue, but since they are given 10 days to make a top to bottom run, you have to do things quickly.

As someone else who was there and witnessed all this go down, this interview really bums me out. Confrontations occur like this because of multiple reasons. First these athlete and their dig team put in 12 plus hour days and do back breaking labor in hot hot heat. Of course they are going to be protective of their line. They just broke their backs creating it. Another reason they occur is because of lack of respect for others. If Rheeder would have asked Kyle just like Norbs did there wouldn't have been an issue. Norbs helped pack and water the landing and lip and Rheeder didn't do anything. When practice happened before quali's Rheeder hit the section of Kyles line (lip included) and never once asked. It took Kyles dig team a long time to bench cut that line and for sure it pissed them off. Kyles the voice of his team and if standing up for yourself and the hard work you did makes you an a*shole, then let me be an a*shole. Stuff like this happens every year. It's a competition and a very unique one. Lives are at risk and money and reputation are on the line. What is sad about this article is that the drama was brought home and not left in the desert. There is no need to rehash things like this on Pinkbike. Be professional. Everyone knows there are two sides to every story.

I kinda can't believe the crap I've heard about rampage..... normally mountainbikers - especially freeriders - are some of the friendliest and most easy going guys out. The fest series for example has the vibe that I see with groups of riders out on the trails - relaxed, friendly and non-exclusive. Weird to hear about freeriders acting like footballers.

abridged from Wikipedia: "Moral relativism maintains that all moral judgments have their origins either in societal or in individual standards. No single objective standard exists by which one can assess "truth". Descriptive properties of terms such as "good", "bad", "right", and "wrong" do not stand subject to universal truth conditions, but only to societal convention and personal preference. Given the same set of verifiable facts, some societies or individuals will have a fundamental disagreement about what one ought to do based on norms; thus one cannot adjudicate using an independent standard of evaluation. The latter standard will always be societal or personal and not universal, unlike, for example, the scientific standard for assessing temperature..."

Im as much of a Strait fan as the next guy. Although i say fuck it and send it if it isnt a drop or a jump that another rider is using as long as they contribute it should be a solid.  Rheeders run was in my top three, easily. Was better to watch than Zinks and his fireroad run. Sure the top line wasn't as gnarly but that flow. THAT flow!!
  • 2 0
And all those sandbags and wide-ass landings. In case you forgot, traversing was not taken into account for judging the lines due to how the venue was this year. This was a first but most people seemed to miss that because minus Zink traversing the fireroad, his run was well deserved. In terms of judging a big mountain comp., not a slope run.
  • 6 3
Nice piece by Rheeder. Came to like his style much more this year. If the thing about Straight is true, he's a spoil sport, which would be kinda sad. Second place in people choice is a good one for first timers, too. Looking forward to next year. Maybe Aggy wins and Rheeder gets a podium spot.

What if like 10 of the new generation riders all teamed up and created just one line. Each of the 10 people could contribute their allotment of sandbags and effort to create something truly spectacular to watch. Then those 10 people all ride the same line and see who has the best run.

At first, I was lured to watch "rampage" because of the action and not the drama. But then I noticed that write-ups, comments and opinions posted on here gave me a glimpse of the environment and conditions surrounding the event. From frustrations and harmony or lack thereof among participants and organizers, to articles detailing the preparations, the ups and downs, the in-between of the process involved from conception to rest can all be likened to a "reality TV show," they become more spicy and entertaining.
IMO: sweeping all negative under the carpet( and they remain there 'cause they are all part of the process) the event was a success. Winners were given their due recognition and losers are open to vent their frustrations... CHEERS.

The riding was great from all of the competitors. After the first run if I were in 5th or lower, I'd just ride the first place guys line w/o regard and try to make it happen.  Rampage is the biggest bitch fest in sports. If the riders aren't complaining about there judging there complaining at each other. They sound like a bunch of high school girls. It's really a shame because this is the most publicized event in the sport and there making themselves look awful. If this stuff has to happen they should deal with it at rampage, and let it stay there. No good's going to come from crying to the media.
