As spring approaches, preparations for the Red Bull Wide Open are heating up. This summer, the search for the ultimate mountain bike athlete will take place at Bike Park Mottolino in Livigno (ITA). On July 13th downhill, 4X and freeride icons will go head-to-head down a huge supercross inspired track packed with technical features and high-speed obstacles. The rider line-up is one of a kind – for the first time ever so many heavy hitters will be united side-by-side in a single 6-man format race.

Since the announcement of Red Bull Wide Open, athletes have been flooding in to reserve a spot on the starting list. “Red Bull Wide Open is a mix of my 2 favorite sports, mountain biking and supercross, so deciding to attend the event was very easy,” said Martin Soderstrom. “The chance to race against some of my heroes from other disciplines is a once in a life time opportunity that I do not want to miss! It will be a challenge to ride such a unique course but I guess everyone will let loose and just send it!”

While Martin Soderstrom is one of the biggest names on the freeride scene, other competitors like Brian Lopes, Greg Minnaar and Andreu Lacondeguy will be attending to defend their corner of the gravity world. Which discipline will prove to have the necessary skills to conquer the Red Bull Wide Open track? Come to Livigno on July 13th and find out!

For former 4X Champion Brian Lopes, the Red Bull Wide Open course will be his biggest challenge yet. “I'm looking forward to July 13th, I'm waiting for the challenge in Livigno since the moment I was asked to participate,” said Brian Lopes.“ His elbow-to-elbow racing skills will prove useful in the 6-man format race. But will downhill racers like Greg Minnaar have the technical advantage over the rough terrain at such high speeds? At this point it is anyone’s guess who will take the title. With such a talented and insane rider line up, awesome action is guaranteed!

So, save the date, July13th 2014 and bring your bike because Bike Park Mottolino has some of the most flowy and exciting trails in the Alps. There is no doubt that after watching Red Bull Wide Open, you will feel the urge to rip up some dirt as well! Alongside the race action several side events including a bike expo will provide even more eye candy for the onsite guests.

Official schedule:
July 12th: training and Red Bull Wide Open qualifications

Brilliant? Maybe. Definitely cool, but by no means original. This is Bicycle Motocross. More like the way it was in the 70's, but scaled up. There used to be downhill, high speed, loose tracks with long jumps in early BMX. This is where all styles of mountain biking that involve jumps and berms come from, not Klunking. Know your roots, Bicycle Motocross isn't a type of bike, it's a style of riding.

Ha ha! Your ignorance of history is not your fault, kiddies. It's not really taught on sites like this.

Don't take my word for it, ask Mick Hannah, Fabien Cousine, Mark Weir, Joe Lawwill, or Miles Rockwell. They have all ridden my trail, and will agree with me.

mecabeat dude cool photos. any more in that treasure trove?

ps. don't hate on everyones stoke for a redbull sized version of the original. They supersize every good idea and give it a flashy logo, dubstep and helicopters.. Doesn't mean the original thing wasn't as rad as the new one. It's just cool as f*ck to see the who's who of freeride, 4x and DH all on one course. Just gotta throw a few 16 or 20" wheels in the mix! doesn't BMX stand for bicycle motocross?
  • 1 0
@ bakenbikin Not hatin man. I'm more stoked on the Wide Open event than anyone! That's exactly what I'm saying, it IS Bicycle Motocross. My comments were intended to unite, and show people that it's not what bike you ride, but how you ride it that matters. I ride a 20" dirt jump bike, 24" race cruiser, 26" flow trail/4x/slalom bike, 26" fs trail bike, and I'm saving for another mini-dh/park bike. Riding different bikes on a variety of terrain helps me become a better rider. On the trail bike I find the natural rhythm through the rough sections, and power wheelie out of corners because of my BMX perspective. On the BMX track, I have better strength and endurance from riding my trail bike.

My point in bringing up the history is that we should all ride more dirt and not let categories divide us. When I put a suspension fork on a 26" cruiser in 1998 and started building downhill trails with steep doubles, nobody where I lived understood what I was doing. Then I saw the MTB movie Chainsmoke, and I knew that BMX style mountain biking was going to start happening in a big way. Now we have MTB parks, slopestyle, 4x, and jump trails popping up everywhere, and It's awesome! Just remember it's because of bmxers getting on mountain bikes that this progression began. It started on the mountains, and now with Wide Open it has come full circle. If you race DH, 4x, or slalom, try BMX. It will make you a better mountain biker. And you don't need a BMX bike to do it.

Oh, I got most of those photos from here www.bmxsociety.com/topic/24729-mel-stoutsenberger-history-of-bmx-photos

Thanks for the link man. I love the pics of the BMX sidecar action. I had no idea!

There had already been a race like that in Highland MTB park last year (minus the 60' gaps they announced), called the "Battle of Hellion". It looks pretty cool.

Talk about a star studded lineup..........

Hope the pay check is good, seems like a quick way to get injured. Great for the spectators and RedBull though...

If the track will contain wallrides, beware of Michal Marosi.
  • 4 0
concur .. his skill to take over from above your head
  • 1 0
For a second I didn't see his name on the start list and I was pretty upset.
  • 13 0
Lopes, Hannah or Minnaar for the win. Lacondeguy, Zink or Aggy for sickest trick mid run!
  • 3 0
 Uh Prokop?
  • 3 0
 no stevie smith :'(
  • 4 0
surely people won't be throwing tricks with 5 other people in mid air next to them. unless it becomes a tactic to try to nac the opposition in the face Razz
  • 2 0
It'll be just like downhill domination supecross
  • 1 0
why not throw tricks if you're hitting 60' gaps? you'll have plenty of time while you're up there. not every jump obviously, but i reckon there'll be a fair bit of showboating going on with that lineup. Smile
  • 10 1
 questions;
-Claudio?, come on, you have to enter this!
-Are we sure there will be a webcast on Red Bull TV?
-If yes, will the comments be by Rob Warner

wow this is gonna be awesome.
  • 1 0
So long as he gives the preview I'm happy.
  • 9 1
Brook Bulldog McDonald where are youuuuu ???
  • 20 0
Must be in another weight division... Hahahaha... Impossible to win an elbow-to-elbow from that guy!
  • 7 1
500 meters doesn't sound like a very long track. Holeshot will probably win it.
  • 2 0
^i think you're right. it would be cool to see it at about 600-650 maybe, since olympic bmx sx is @ 500 too, i think. with it gravity assisted, gears and big hits i think it would hold attention fine from a viewer's standpoint and be cool for riders.. maybe not..
  • 1 0
Can you rig up a handlebar mounted remote lockout for a DH shock?
  • 8 1
 STEVIE, WHERE ARE YOU?
  • 6 4
The event sounds really cool, the lineup of riders is pretty stacked, so the spectators are in for some epic battles.

But... "the ultimate mountain bike athlete"? That's an exaggeration. The best combination of DH/4X/man-made jumps skills maybe. To find the actual ultimate MOUNTAIN biker you'd need a course consisting of some really tough, technical climbs (no fireroads) followed by World Cup DH-worthy descents all done in one shot (no untimed "transfers" and stuff). Although that might turn out a bit predictable, it would probably get won by Nino Schurter on an all mountain bike Wink

Still going to have fun watching the Wide Open of course.
  • 1 0
The format you suggest would not really be a test of "ultimate mountainbike athlete" more "ultimate extreme xc rider". It would pretty much come down to fitness/endurance in the end.

Surely "Ultimate mtb Athlete" would be more like:

Round 1: A weekend of Enduro style racing.
Round 2: A DJ/Slopestyle event
Round 3: A two day DH event held on two 4-5 minute tracks. One high speed and flowy/jumpy, one tight/techy and rough. Both steep/not much pedaling.
Round 4: A 5 day XC marathon.
Round 5: 4X
Round 6: Trials (anyone remember trials :p)
Round 7: Technical Climbing
Round 8: Longest skid

Probably forgotten a whole load of things...
  • 1 0
I did forget one too. A bloody massive one

Round 9: A Big Mountain/Rampage/Freeride kinda thing Not just huge jumps and drops but more general "off piste" messing about
  • 4 0
 Akrigg would take it
  • 1 0
Yeah, I totally forgot Trials and the Longest skid Wink Good idea with multiple events. Dunno about the style-judged comps though, think I would leave only the timed ones as they are more objective. 4X and tech DH would be plenty for testing DJ/Big Mountain skills.

And @bakenbikin I agree Akrigg would be tough to beat for all-round versatility.
  • 1 0
kinda see what you're saying, I'm not a big fan of the judged events either. However in my head 4x and DJ are very very different skills. You would be amazed at the number of 4x riders that can't get through a proper set of trails. Same for tech DH and picking your way down some loose sandy Utah style slope with no marked trail. The first is all bike handling, the latter more to do with good on-the-fly route planning. And yeh, Akrigg would probably win
  • 1 0
Longest wheelie??? Come on, that's the most important one!
  • 1 0
oh yeah! although some chav on a shopping bike would probably win that one
  • 5 0
Söderström, Fischbach, Aggy, the Claw and Elliot Jackson!! This is going to be great! Big Grin
  • 5 0
Kinda seems like one of the most fun, yet scariest races ever! So awesome!

  • 5 0
So many legends to be beaten by Slavik and Prokop, need to see it Smile
  • 5 0
No Graves? This seems like something he could wreck at!
  • 3 0
He's too smart to race something where he will get the holeshot but then be t-boned by some douche on the first corner.
  • 1 0
Just go look up red bull straight rhythm , I don't expect any slope style icons to win. Low and fast will be the key Guys who have experience in close quarters racing over big gaps will have the edge Lopes is a definate treat here . Go watch him race vans downhill bmx super cross
  • 4 0
Little bit of wee just came out
  • 4 1
How is this not just four cross but with six riders on a more gnarly track.
  • 2 0
This sounds amazing and terrifying at the same time. Kind of like the Rhalves Banzai races! But It sure is good to be a fan these days, this will be one epic showdown!
  • 3 0
 Hopefully its live on redbull.com/bike.
Didn't see anything regarding this in article..
  • 3 1
All my bets are on Kyle Strait, gnarly all-round rider and he beat Minnaar in the final sprint at last years sea otter slalom.

  • 2 0
where is fairclough? looks like a perfect competition for him
  • 5 0
Because he would whip the others off their bikes?
  • 3 0
It'll be whoever gets out the first turn first. Just like 4x
  • 2 0
No Graves, Peat, Semenuk or Gwin? Would love to see them involved, Peaty was always a beast at 4x
