  Richie Rude on Red Bull

At 22 years old, Richie Rude already has three world championships under his belt. One for DH Junior World Champ, and two for EWS World Champion. The rumors about Richie joining Red Bull can finally be put to rest thanks to an interview released on redbull.com/bike.

Richie is pictured riding near his home on the snowy slopes of Thunder Mountain Bike Park. In an interview with Matthew Delorme, he talks about his experience coming up as a rider, and his plans for 2017.

Of his goals for 2017 Richie said "I’d like to get a clean sweep on an EWS weekend, win every stage. Certainly, I want another title. I really want to promote the sport and help it grow."

We expect to see more great things from Rude come race season.

Cue the self-righteous drink water not energy drink people..... Let the kid make a living. He works hard, he deserves it.
  • 210 13
Yea last I checked water wasn't paying any sponsorship money.
  • 59 15
@sino428: actually there are quite a few "water companies'" that do sponsor athletes, at least here in Europe.
  • 156 4
 Better not be Nestle...
  • 66 19
@Gamsjaga: If that's the case that's great. Maybe more should. But I'm not going to disparage anyone from taking a redbull sponsorship. Its funny, Neko Mulally gets a sponsorship from a beer company and everyone thinks its the greatest thing ever, yet people shit on the energy drink companies. Alcohol is arguably much more harmful that caffeine.
  • 4 0
@2bigwheels: haha, you' re right. The ones I know of are smaller companies which don't belong to any of the food giants like Nestle.
  • 44 3
@sino428: but beer is good for your soul.
  • 76 3
nobody can or should complain about redbull sponsorships because they have done so much for this sport. A good bit of the progression in mountain biking is because of redbull and almost all of the commercial growth is because of them.
  • 12 12
@sino428: Kids can't buy beer (legally).

Red Bull is a global lifestyle, adventure, and motorsports brand with immense reach and grassroots credibility that is the envy of all other consumer goods companies.

Red Bull also is a drink, comes in a slender silver can, and packs a lot of B vitamins and caffeine. The sales of the drink "give wings" to the ability to sponsor big name teams and build money-making sub-brands like Red Bull Media House. The brand recognizes Mr Rude to be a suitable ambassador for what they represent. Drinking the beverage is incidental, comparing it to drinking water is apples and oranges.

He gets a sweet helmet too. Congrats Richie!
  • 17 6
Some water companies are worst than redbull. Just filter your own.
  • 18 8
@sino428: lol if you think that is all thats in energy drinks and last I checked in most states the legal drinking age is 21. hence there is an attempt at alcohol regulation vs anything for energy drinks. energy drinks have been proven to be damaging to developing children.

good for him for taking the money for wearing a red bull helmet.

Be informed and f*ck the parents who let their kids drink that garbage.
  • 14 3
@twozerosix: I have to apologize, how could I not see that - the only reason they sell the drink is to be able to sponsor big name teams and found inhouse media agencies. There is this mysterious thing called marketing, ever heard of it?

By the way you forgot sugar in your list of ingredients. Coincidence?

Irony is most anti energy drink folks are pro recreational drugs.

 @sino428:

Totally agree with you except I think it might all be taurine or whatever it is in Red Bull that's really bad for you.

@sino428: Ummm, pretty sure Aveda is still paying Derek Zoolander some serious coin
  • 1 0
 @kipvr: yes, you are right
  • 6 0
@Gamsjaga: I don't know what coincidence you mean. Yes, I'm speaking 'marketing'.

My point is that Red Bull appears to be vastly more successful in creating a lifestyle brand than the incumbent competition (Coca-Cola or Pepsi products). For many people (consumers) Red Bull as a brand is larger than simply the canned energy drink, and their media savvy is matched by their speed and flexibility to extend and activate their brand.
  • 5 0
@backyardfreerider: True. If you're going to bitch about a word class athlete taking some money in an industry that might only pay him to ride for a few years, then tell me you're also boycotting Rampage.
  • 6 1
@Gamsjaga: the catch is that water "companies" suck. It's a needless waste of resources and energy to sell water in packaging

@sino428 agreed
  • 13 3
Funny how everyone hates energy drink but nobody hates coffee. As comparison, Red Bull has 30mg of caffeine / 100mL, while coffee has 40mg of caffeine / 100mL. An espresso even has 212mg / 100mL (you drink less of it though but it hits harder because you drink it in one sip).

Yes energy drink also has taurine, but after more than a decade of research no one has yet found that it would cause any harm.

Also sugar wise, it is not more than any other type of soda or how much sugar many people put in their coffee.

In no way am I saying that energy drink is good for you, because it's certainly not healthy.

But I am saying the fear that people have about it is a bit overdone, especially since nobody says anything about the very high percentage of people who drink several coffee per day. But if you drink one energy drink a week everyone (including these coffee drinkers, smokers, fat people, etc) will tell you that you will die.

There's no need to be afraid of it and act like it's the devil. Just as with any other type of unhealthy stuff (coffee, soda, chocolate, snacks, bacon, beer, etc) keep the intake limited and keep it only for special occasions.
  • 3 1
@2bigwheels: I wish Oscar Blues could drop the same wad of cash as Redbull. Would love to see a beer sponsorship have super competitive athletes like Redbull. Neko Mulally represents them well. Would nice to see an EWS rider smash it too.

@2bigwheels: if you don't think nestle supplies water to almost all major drink manufacturers I've got some bad news...

Funny you say that... if redbull brought out a water I'd definately but it! Just for what they've done for the sport. I'd six pack that ish

Red Bull is so immensely popular because it does appear to have a significant performance boost on athletic activity (I don't drink any sugary drink myself). Here is the science behind it. m.pe.com/articles/mice-823018-garland-red.html
  • 3 3
Pinkbikers think their likes and comments can fund an athlete life. Haha
  • 3 0
I think the issue here is, everyone knows that if you drink too much alcohol, it's gonna be bad for you, but, they market redbull as it was safer than orange juice, and the truth is, if you drink enough of it, it can also be really bad for you. I have nothing against redbull, I'll have one every now and then, to me the problem is deceiving kids by not disclosing the full truth about it's potential harmfulness, and letting kids think that drinking gallons of the stuff is gonna make you be good like Richie, when in al likelyhood Richie probably doesn't drink the stuff, or maybe he does, who knows.
  • 1 0
@VZLNMTB: I would say that is accurate, because orange juice is garbage and slowly killing our kids. www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2014/02/misunderstanding-orange-juice-as-a-health-drink/283579

  • 2 0
@VZLNMTB: you say your problem is "deceiving kids by not disclosing the full truth about it's potential harmfulness, and letting kids think that drinking gallons of the stuff is gonna make you be good like Richie".

I'm not sure what advertising you see but I see nothing of the sort from Redbull. There is nothing I have ever seen where they suggest drinking gallons of the stuff or claim it will give you some kind of super ability. And to me the whole 'gives you wings' slogan is no different than coffee companies running an ad showing a tired person drinking a coffee in the morning, or dunking donuts saying 'America runs on dunkin'. I don't see their advertising as any more aggressive than coffee or soda companies.
  • 1 1
@sino428: Sorry to break it too you chief but there is a lot more junk in red bull than just caffeine
  • 1 0
Don't worry, a friend of mine is also a Red Bull sponsored athlete and he always has water in his Red Bull bottle. Nevertheless, congrats to Richie. I am sure it is win-win for both parties...
  • 1 0
@adrennan: no one can complain about Beer !
  • 1 0
@aidanbrown559: hate to break it to you 'chief' but you should probably do some research. None of the other ingredients in redbull are considered to be dangerous, especially not in the small quantities which are found in redbull. The caffeine and sugar are considered to be by far the most 'dangerous' things in that can if you drink too much of it.
  • 1 0
@sino428: it's not the caffeine that makes energy drinks a problem, it's the copious amounts of sugar (hence energy drink)

@Rubberelli: cool article! The Red Bull mice were mad to run!

Strong work Richie Rude!
  • 1 0
@Rubberelli: the results of that test is exactly why many pro cyclists shit a double espresso before a race and why many body builders drink espressos before their work outs. Caffeine doesn't give you more energy or power, but it helps you drain more out of your reserves. Usually your body stops at a certain percentage of the reserves to keep the body safe in case it needs more later, but the caffeine helps drain more energy than you could without. Same effect is with drugs, only that helps to drain your energy even more until the point which becomes unsafe.
  • 1 0
@Mattin: caffeine is a drug. Banned at nica and many other under age events.
Theres actually a dui case in northern California where a guy was charged couple years ago with driving under influence of caffiene that he was still fighting to this day.
He cut off some undercover cop car so theyre trying to nail him...unprecedented.
  • 2 0
@jrocksdh: it is indeed good they banned it at underaged events. Imagine 12 year old kids being addicted to double espressos due to racing bikes for fun...

@Rubberelli: where I live, OJ is organic AF.. but, just change OJ with whatever healthy drink of your choice
  • 1 1
@sino428: I think RedBull advertising is very aggressive, and I don't think running an ad with say (insert any-actionsports-redbull-sponsored-athlete) doing something incredibly amazing is the same as an ad with some sleeping and then being functional after drinking coffee, but you have your opinion and I have mine. Again I don't redbull is terrible, and I think they've done good things for action sports, I just think they could be a little more honest with their advertising, or have some kind of disclaimer on the cans or something cuz it's not healthy for kids to be chugging 5 cans of redbull a day nor do I think they're having enough coffee a day to harm themselves so maybe coffee and redbull consumption on say a 12 year old kid is not a good comparisonsince it's not close the same amounts.
  • 2 1
@VZLNMTB: so your issue is that they have adds featuring action sports athletes doing crazy things? Can't that be said about any company that sponsors these guys? So do you have an issue when a bike company puts out videos of thier sponsored riders doing crazy things on thier bikes? Should YT be more honest with everyone that we are not suddenly going to be able to ride like Cam Zink if we buy thier bike?
  • 1 1
 @sino428: nevermind..
  • 1 1
Because Redbull pays these athletes SOOOO much, right?

Money is money, and it's obviously well earned by Rude. He certainly deserves it, but he deserves WAY more than he's actually getting.

Read up a bit and you'll see that Redbull doesn't pay its athletes jack. A pittance compared to the advertising value and exposure they receive from their athletes.

Oh, and it's poison.
  • 1 1
@VZLNMTB: Man, Red Bull Works when you have to drive lots of hours, when you study for the driving licence or when after 8 descends you want that mix of sugar and caffeine to be able and hit another 2or 3 downhill tracks. Try and see while you get up with the lift you start to assimilate the benefits.
  • 1 1
@MasterSlater: You realize that this is a free market right? And that athletes are free to sign with whatever companies they want. If Redbull was underpaying these athletes so much why do they all want to sign with Redbull? If the advertising value they offer was so high compared to what they are being paid, why aren't other drink companies like Monster, Rockstar, coke, pepsi, gatorade etc offering more?

I'd love to see mountain bikers make more money, but the truth is their marketing value just isn't as high as you think it is. If it was a competing company would offer to pay them more than Redbull.

I wasn't saying there is anything wrong with him accepting the RB sponsorship...just disagreeing with the justification being "starving racer"...this is richie rude we're talking about after all, the dude is not only a badass but he's a champion
  • 13 0
I think the important thing is that RedBull by investing so much in different sports and by being rather selective with who receivs their sponsorship, has made that color scheme of the helmet into an iconic item of modern age. It doesn't matter what sport you are in, it doesn't matter how much you know about sports. The Blue Silver helmet tells everyone that there is a bad ass in the hood. To put it in other words: if you got a Red Bull colors on your head - you've made it in your athletic life. You are a part of world's elite. In a way it's an alternative to the Olympic medal.

@WAKIdesigns: .....That's exactly the problem with it.
  • 1 0
@RollinFoSho: why is that such a big problem...are any other companies lining up to dump as much capital into MTB, for example, as RB?

We all know that RB, like any other company, is focused on ROI, but common...we act like they're the devil. The coverage we get of WC DH alone is incredible, and it's all thanks to them...isn't it?

Don't get me started on what they've done to the commentating though...haha...maybe I have rose tinted glasses on though.

I'm not arguing here, but from my perspective were probably better off with RB than without.

Seriously, I'm confused, I can't stop watching MTB World Cup on Red Bull TV, but sorry, energy drinks make me sick :-S
  • 42 2
I love what Redbull does for our (and many other) sports, but I hate the whole caffeinated sugar water thing. I'd love to see them make something an athlete would truly benefit from drinking. Or even better, see a company outside of energy drinks gain this kind of power and influence. Blows my mind they can sponsor the GOATS of every sport just from drink revenues. 5.4 billion cans in 2013! The drink brings in the cash, but the real genius is in the marketing machine.
  • 18 1
Red Bull has about the same sugar content as Coke, but significantly more caffeine. Coffee, on the other hand, has no sugar (unless you add it yourself), but even more caffeine. So if you're looking for a pick me up (caffeine has been proven to have some beneficial effects on mental acuity and both aerobic and anaerobic stamina, at least when consumed in moderation), and you're trying to avoid the nasty post-sugar crash, perhaps the ticket is to have some coffee, along with some milk (for a bit of a sugar hit, but not as much - and buffered by the protein).

Then again, none of this "energy drink" business is really about "energy"...

As for recovery drinks - having a beer, along with plenty of water, is apparently not a bad way to go. Of course, after a long ride, it's kind of hard to stick to one...
  • 7 0
Caffeinated sugar water? Just like coke, pepsi, sprite, most bottled iced tea, etc? You could even classify most drinks at starbucks as nothing more than caffeinated sugar water as well. Do you ever drink any of these things? None of this stuff is "good" for you, just like beer, or wine or shots aren't 'good' for you. But none of these things are very harmful either when had in moderation. Point is if you are against anything unhealthy thats great. But don't single out energy drinks and being markedly worse than the other products mentioned above.
  • 6 2
@sino428: For me the problem lies in the way RB is marketed as a sort of healthy lifestyle drink that "gives you wings" and kids are not aware that it may have the opposite effect. Same goes for the stuff you listed.
  • 3 0
@sino428: Great point, but I don't see any of those other things having such a big impact on action sports under the pretense of health or performance benefits. I just think it would be cool to see an actually healthy product give such awesome support to MTB. And for the record, I've never even tasted coffee or beer and I don't drink sugar soda or even fruit juice. So yeah, I pretty much am against anything unhealthy for myself, but I don't begrudge people from enjoying them in moderation, like you say. Nor do I blame these guys for taking a sponsorship.
  • 5 4
It is remarkable they sell billions of cans of something that tastes like a failed science experiment. The stuff tastes nasty, not matter what you mix it with.
  • 2 0
@g-42: don't come up in here with your well reasoned arguments!
  • 4 0
@Gamsjaga: lots of shit is marketed like that. Have you seen the organic aisle recently? Tons of "eco friendly" vegan crap packaged individually. How about all the "fat free" and "diet" food? I could go on and on, but I don't need to. Be educated, and the only marketing that will appeal to you is logical marketing ("here's our brand, here's what we do, here's why you should give us your money") However, redbull does not seem to be nearly the dishonest marketers that half the rest of the world is. Creative? Yes. Pays cool people to associate themselves? Yes. Most of the marketing that redbull engages in really seems like it could be taken and repackaged by anyone selling a stimulant... coffee, adderall, cocaine. They don't act like a health food company at all. The new Coca-cola ads are more guilty of that.
  • 1 0
its a mixer and quite good one too.
  • 3 0
@airon: Red bull is a drug like almost any other: Facebook, Pinkbike, sugar, coffee, alcohol, weed, sex, MTB - it can be useful as long as it is respected. If someone can't take his/hers head around it, well - natural selection baby. I tried others and Monster fks me up. Redbull in bottle is the best thing I tried so far for long distance car driving. It keeps me up and I get next to no sugar/caffeine crash afterwards, as long as I take small sips through the course of an hour or two. I can't tell it about Snus or coffee.

  • 3 1
It is proven that beer helps you ride better than energy drinks.
  • 3 0
@mazze: Depends on where you live and where the source is. For example; I'm on a well system next to vineyards so all water for drinking/coffee goes through a filter. If someone is on a public water system depends on the water treatment plant that's supplying. Some areas are better than others.
  • 3 1
@mazze: That's probably because the municipalities you were in over-chlorinated their water. Not a health risk, but often something water treatment facilities do. They do it in parts of Florida where I have family and every time I am there I think about how there's millions of gallons of the best tasting water not so far underground, then the city has to go make it taste like crud. Some places (like Beaver, UT, best water in the US) have fantastic tasting water right out of the tap. I drink from the tap where I live in Wyoming. Other cities here have different tasting water. It all just depends on your location.

Redbull a stupid brand that sell unhealthy carbonated beverages, yet sponsors cool events and athletes. My take is enjoy good and anti-promote the bad. If you see a kid drinking a Red Bull take it from him/her and dump that shit in trash. Don't drink redbull water is way better and free in most cases. If you want caffeine drink tee or coffee. Thank you redbull for free vids and sponsorships though your product sucks bulls balls.

@jrocksdh: Hahaha Lol man, you made me spit up my coffee. and No.

@Mattin: After over a decade of study... they HAVE found Taurine can cause HARM to the human body, especially the heart!
When mixed with caffeine or sugar, taurine can raise your hearts BPM to dangerous levels.
And it has been linked to lowering mens libido, and strength after use.

P.s Energy Drink People- look up where that Taurine shit comes from and you"ll never want to drink it again! haha LOl

Just don't make a Tv show about how you didn't win a race and excuses after the fact CK the show will defeat you before the race will!

They make a suger free option. Then it's just caffeinated water. Not so bad. Still would t let my kids drink it though

Correction, its caffinated water with a bunch of other stuff, including carcinogens. I rarely grab a red bull, but when I do I avoid the sugar free at all costs. Anything "diet" is poison.

 @dugglesthemuddled: carcinogens, really?

Red Bull is also doing a lot of research related to "flow states" and optimum human performance. They've come a long way.

hm. don't know why seeing Red Bull entering the EWS feels like seeing an Apache chopper landing in the middle of a Tracy-Chapman-Unplugged-concert.
