What time is it? A brake rotor clock.

by Erik St-Gelais
Feb 3, 2009

Ever find yourself wondering what time it is, but no one knows? Here's the solution to your problem, and of course, it involves bikes.

Read on for a tutorial on how to make a brake rotor clock!

All you need to make this you probably have in your house, but even so, it isn't expensive if your missing something.

Materials:
Old clock
Brake rotor
Epoxy or other glue
A few pieces of hardware

First off, take the clock apart, so that all you have are the hands and mechanical part of the clock.

Clock disassembled and rotor

Clock disassembled and rotor

Next, mix up your epoxy, or use another type of glue. Apply it to one side of the rotor where the clock will attach, and stick them together. Once the glue is dry, you can reattach the hands.

My clock did not have wall mounts on the mechanical part, so I just made it a desk clock. To make it stand up, I went over to Home Hardware and bought 2 bolts, 2 nuts, and 2 washers (1/4 inch). Just put the bolts through the holes of the rotor, throw on the washer, and tighten down the nut.

And there you have it! Your vary own brake rotor clock, and it doesn't take very much time at all.

Rider 1 " Yo dude, you know the time man?"

Rider 2 bends down to check his rotor
Rider 2 " It's 12:46"

Confused Rider 1,3,4 and 5 thinks Rider 2 has had a few too many Jaeger Bombs the previous evening.

Great idea. I'm gonna use my old Avid rotor, it has 12 holes around the outside so it should be perfect for reading the time!

Yep i was halfway thorugh building mine but got stuck - Hope V2 Vented Floating Rotor - looks amazing but because its so thick the clock hands don't stick through the front far enough! deface the disc spider or find metal clock hands to bend.

kinda unrelated but u have a clock that is a car disk, and when the alarm goes the disk spins and you hit this thing that looks like a brake pedal to stop it, so cool. Cooler if it was a bike brake system tho!!! Big Grin
