It had to happen. The way Richie Rude has been riding this season the question was no longer "Will he win?" but when... All season he has been on the pace, not just on the more demanding downhill stages where you would expect him to be strong, but everywhere, even on the tough physical stages where conventional wisdom states that a rider with his build shouldn't have a chance. Conventional wisdom be damned and today we saw a 20 year old standing on the podium step about two men who have thirteen downhill World Championship titles between them. That represents three generations of riders - in 1998 when Richie was three years old, Fabien Barel was winning the junior World Championship and Nico Vouilloz was winning the senior title.

It's an important moment for enduro too. Richie is one of a group of young riders coming to the head of the sport, along with Martin Maes and Florian Nicolai, who are without a doubt the future of the discipline. There should be no question that Richie, Maes or Nicolai could find a ride on the World Cup DH circuit if they wanted one, Richie's Junior World Champ stripes put his ability beyond question. Yet this is where he chooses to be - this is the discipline he wants to race. And that is a big deal - he is the first race winner from a growing group of young, extremely talented racers who have chosen enduro, and that is crucial for the future of enduro as mainstream racing discipline.

About the Photographers

Matt Wragg • Age: 32 • Years Shooting: 3
Maybe best-known as a long-standing member of Pinkbike's European editorial team, Matt is also a successful commercial photographer. As the first English-speaking photographer to follow and document the nascent European enduro scene, he was shooting enduro well before it became a marketing buzzword or a shade of blue. Today he is still one of the few photographers to make his living following the discipline and has built up an enviable client list that includes many of the top teams and brands in the world.

Dave Trumpore • Age: 35 • Years Shooting: 4
Dave spent the bulk of the past 17 years racing professionally before realizing that despite qualifying for the random World Cup final here and there, the next generation was just way too fast and way more talented. Upon hanging up his racing boots in 2010, it would be a few years until Dave picked up a camera and started shooting the odd race here and there as a way to stay in touch with all the friends he had made over the years, and the rest as they say is history. In just a few years time his photos have graced the pages of just about every MTB magazine and major media outlet, while his commercial client list includes a who's who of the cycling industry, and he is lucky enough to shoot regularly with some of the best riders on the planet. Currently at Pinkbike, Dave shoots the Downhill WC and the Enduro World Series as well as contributing to the occasional editorial story.

Wow, super stoked to see Richie take the win! It must feel amazing being on the podium with those legends of the sport. The consistency required to win an EWS event is astounding.

Need a Richie Rude Bike Check and suspension setup.
  • 10 3
no need for this, do it as Brendog told us "Set the suspension as hard as possible and then ride it until you fell confident on it"
:-)
  • 4 3
 That justifies his WC results.

 Matt Walker 28 on a dh bike ! #Vanzacs

amazing really as he schooled a lot of guys who train full time just to do enduro races and who are on teams with more suitable bikes.

aleways thought a DH bike with a lighter build would be as fast as anything on those stages, it is MOSTLY gravity fed

I was there to see Richie win, sooo stoked for the lad. That win has been a long time coming. I would love to see Martin Maes take a win now...

This probably isnt the place to ask but I am curious. Do any of these riders wear mouth guards? After seeing young Richie's grill I was brought back to a ski accident of my own at 14 years or so. My braces were knocked off several of my teeth and jammed into my gums. Luckily didnt lose any teeth. Anyhow the dentist is expensive. As someone who will never ride as fast as any of these warriors I dont use one, but they seem to make sense for these guys and DH.
  • 2 0
Full face helmets for all these guys. I think it's maditory in French and Italian races. Anyone know more?
  • 1 0
I know Marcelo uses (or at least used last year) a mouth guard for dh
  • 2 0
Common in slopestyle, due to high risk of nasty crashes. I think for Enduro, and even DH, it might present some problems as a lot of mouth breathing is involved. Full face is probably safe enough for the risks involved. As much as I love the EWS decision to use local racing rules, I think that with the speed and ferocity these top Enduro guys show at every round, it should be full faces at every race, Scotland and Ireland were open face and I know first hand those trails can be super knarly at those kinds of speeds..

And Graves also a talented sensei for Rude. Wow, that'll bring an extra achievement in his CV.
  • 4 0
Barel is a machine - ups his game when the chips are down and wins stages. Nico V too. Cool to see the Rude's of the world rising up and taking on the old guard.

Any regrets Richie Rude may have had about not going the DH route are likely a distant memory. Congrats...it was only a matter of time!!!
  • 9 0
The choice to not go dh was not entirely in his hands, yeti being a small brand couldn't afford to back a wc dh team AND an enduro team. From a brand perspective yeti's choice to go full enduro was not stupid, how many dh bikes sold versus how many sb5 and sb6's would be sold off the back of the publicity gained. Graves and rude being at the sharp end of the ews is great for sales.
  • 10 1
Of course Richie rude could have left yeti and gone to another team, but yeti, like Santa Cruz is more of a 'family' than a 'team' and the riders of both tend to be very loyal to the brand. Going enduro rather than dh could be seen as the better career choice, Congratulations on the first win, first of many I'm sure.
  • 4 0
 ^ this guy gets it.
  • 2 0
Also, being on a team and training with Graves is probably worth loosing a year or three of the DH circuit. Learn from the best.
  • 1 1
äähm, santa cruz is not so much a "family" any more as dad sold out ( aka cashed out ) ....just saying Razz
  • 2 0
Ibeaver. Was referring more to the syndicate, which is very much a 'family'.
  • 3 0
Just don't call Syndicate a trade-team, @ad15 - not this season, at least!

I totally concur with your points as well. I was more-or-less speaking hypothetically in regards to Richie having regrets. It's very refreshing to see riders actually being loyal to a brand they believe in - and vice-versa.
