Scottish Downhill Series - 2016

Feb 18, 2016
by David Munro
Scotland's National Downhill Mountain Bike Series - organised by the volunteers of the Scottish Downhill Association - the SDA, will kick off their 2016 season at Ae Forest on the 19th March, further rounds will be at Innerleithen, Glencoe - the week before the DH World Cup at Fort William, Dunkeld, Aberfeldy and a brand new track near Moffat.

"We are delighted to be able to confirm the dates for the 2016 Scottish Downhill Association Series; we have managed to secure permission to return to an old favourite and very technical track at Aberfeldy which hasn't been raced for a number of years. The 2016 series will showcase the diversity of the tracks in Scotland and provide a suitable challenge to our riders, as they continue to develop their skills on to National and World Cup level." - David Munro, SDA Secretary / Commentator.

The series will open at Ae Forest, just north of Dumfries, just a couple of weeks before the British Downhill Series visit the same location to start their 2016 season. New features on the track have been created by local trailer builder David Tallontire and whilst many will still be trying to master the infamous 'step down' for the first time, initial reports are positive about the track changes. Free camping in the finish area and free parking are just some of the attractions of an SDA race experience not forgetting the benefit of 2 race runs on a Sunday.

"We have built an excellent partnership with the Forestry and local businesses at Ae Forest and it remains a favourite with many on our Series. Within easy travelling distance from the M74 many of our riders based in England appreciate the reduced travelling distance. With the BDS season opener just a couple of weeks after our event, we welcome any BDS rider looking for some practice; we have plenty of spaces available. The Bike Shop and Cafe at Ae Forest are ideally placed to provide a comprehensive facility and the finish arena is in the same location as the camping field; so a bonus for spectators." - Colin Houston, SDA Chairman

The SDA volunteers provide their own live timing and several upgrades in equipment during 2015 will provide an enhanced level of information for riders and spectators, entries are now available via the British Cycling website.

No pitfichie or Killin, so basically if you live anywhere in the Highlands you've got a long drive, pitfichie was a great race even though a push up. Bring more further north!

There is going to have to be some serious development in aberfeldy before it's worthy of hosting the national champs!!

having not raced Aberfeldy when it was last held, i'm not in a position to really comment, however, every single person i know that raced it said it was one of the best tracks ever. whilst we have plenty of places to ride in scotland, the trails with decent uplift access are few and far between, the staples of fort bill, inners, dunkeld and Ae, are overused and IMHO get boring after the umpteenth year racing. doing the same old , year in year out does nothing to further the sport or its riders abilites. To progress you need to have new trails to progress on to. With that, you always runs the risk of a dud track. Typically in scotland, timed perfectly wrong with the weather!!!!! not saying you are wrong conanangus, I'll assume you know the area well. if you are right its not too big a deal seeing as the SDA do not want you going near the track at aberfeldy unitl the weekend of the race, its only February, am sure they'll have something special cooked up come June time
