Sea Otter Day 6 - Tent is Up!
by Tyler Maine
Apr 17, 2009
The clouds were thick, but no rain fell and the sun emerged to change the pigments of our skin from pasty white to bright red! Gotta love the Otter!
We have a lot on the go down here and you'll see it all over the next week. Right now you can enjoy a piece with Steve Smith and his new Evil Revolt, then take a sneak at Tyler Morland's new DW Turner (more on it to come soon). Enjoy!

If the DW Link is so good - why isn't it being used on this bike?
Delta System = Commencal Linkage (increased leverage in mid range of shock) + Fancy Name.
Nice graphics and marketing though!

I don't know if the DW Link is so good...I mean since Dave Weagle has his name on both bikes he seems to be doing well for himself. You read the last part right..the mARTketing on it is nice.

Hey Mackeroo, the Delta linkage replaces the main frame mounting point on the shock with a link, on the Commencal it is the other way around(on the swingarm). Making this design a "floating" shock, the Commencal is not. If anything, this design is more similar to a Sinister Splinter MX in the sense that is uses a "pull rod" mounted to the swingarm to compress the shock.

It's actually different than the Commencal, the Commencal is a basic single pivot with a shock linkage that imporves a specific range of the shocks performance. If you look closely at the Evil the shock is not attached to a fixed non moving point on either end. The shock attaches to the the rear swing arm and to the Delta link ...kinda like a floating susp design but just a floating shock ...pretty cool ! My understanding is that the Delta system gives a single pivot the bottomless feel of an FSR or ICT.

Yep, can see that the other end of the shock is attached to the swingarm, creating a 'floating' shock - like lots of other bikes already out there (Pace, Trek, etc). My point is the linkage at the other end is very similar to what is already out there, yet giving it a fancy name seems to have everyone in rapture. Effectively this system increased the leverage on the shock through certain positions during the travel - what a lot of other companies are already doing. I'm sure this is a very good bike, I'm just a bit tired of marketing propaganda. Seems to work though as everyone is talking about it, yet it isn't anything new. Easy to criticise from the comfort of a forum. Happy trails.

I'm not in "rapture" with anything about the Revolt, but I can see the very clear difference between it and a Commencal. Personally I think the added lateral rigidity from a link between the swingarm and shock is more important than having a floating shock. I'm a huge fan of that design going back to the original Foes and Tomac DH bikes, and including the current Commencal. But, you can't just go around claiming the Evil and the Commencal are the same thing, cause they quite simply ARE NOT.

I don't know how you see any similarity in the rear linkage of the Evil to that of a Commencal. The Evil's rear shock mount is directly on the swing arm where as the Commencal's is via a thrust link design. No similarity there

"it rides like a winged unicorn" - Stevie is the man. Good luck bringing some hardware back home this year.
Also, those new deemaxs with the graffiti decals look deadly on the revolt.

Dave Weagle explains all about the Delta system in an article on nsmb.com. just search steve smith evil on there site and read away.

Has anyone else noticed that on the Revolt that the seat tube is off to one side of the arch instead of the middle on the arch?i dont no if its a mistake or not.Dont flame on me either if it says it in the writing cause i didnt read any of it
- + 1 Show
its not, its the rear shock, its aligned to the side. that's what i read in dirt anyway, sorry if im wrong!
- + 1 Show
yeah, it just says that they couldnt fit it all in lol. if they kept it inline with the seattube etc, it would push the chainline out furthur and mean the cranks have to be out furthur, therefore giving the frame pretty poor compatibility with other components. that's it in a nutshell! according to dirt anyway...

I want Stevie Smith's Evil Revolt frame with a vivid and a white Totem! There would be nothing you couldn't ride!

Crossmark does make sense as a rear tire. At least, on a hardpack course like Sea Otter. It's 2.25 tubeless, beefy sidewall, width is around 56mm (like that Minnion in the front) - so no pinch flats.

Get some Stevie!!! Looking forward to seeing what he pulls out this year. Oh, nice bikes and stuff too.

on the last pic of the evil, does the seat tube look like its welded more to the drive side or is that just the angle? The black part of the pivot looks a little cock-eyed too....
- + 2 Show
it seems to me like the delta system is just a glorified single pivot. I really do not think there is a need for yet another suspension design in biking. But I guess you gotta do whatever you gotta do to attract the customers and sell the bikes.
- + 2 Show
yep. i think its called linken driven single pivot. Tomac Primers use the same concept. nice looking rig though. dont think i would wanna clean mud out of the links...

loving the evil looks sick. and yea holywood has a point. now whos riding for cove? they have no one now really.

Just testing to see if BOLD font is mandatory. I'd love to try the DHR.
I wonder if the offset shock helps Steve corner better to the left.

The shock on the Evil is positioned left of center, giving the bike a miniscule advantage cornering to the left (lower center of gravity).

yea, super stoked about that, and about that to... and that...
Ow wait, forgot to say i was stoked about another think, (im also stoked about that)
anyway, great bikes, but quit with the word stoked, and saying it 20 times in 1 line
