Sequence Saturday 17

May 5, 2012
by Ian Hylands
Freestyle fixed gear riding is a booming thing right now, bikes are changing and evolving into freestyle machines based on the original fixed gear base. What is most important, the riders are pushing limits fast forward and Ricardo Lino definitely is one of them. 14 stair double peg grind in Lisbon, Portugal.

bigquotesFixed gear bikes, you can love them or hate them. Personally, at first I was adverse to this kind of cycling culture. I thought it was a funny bike polo game for snob kids in turtle necks from New York city, so lame and not interesting. Hipsters and roadies...
I had seen riders doing some easy tricks, but they looked rather awkward, and pedaling non-stop, that's just silly...
Then, one day I had a chance to have a quick ride on one of these bikes and I fell in love, instantly. Since then I've started digging deeper and found how amazing, wide, and fresh the fixed gear culture is!

Too cool to wear a helmet. Not cool enough to ride a BMX.

Wtf Pinkbike this is not a sequence? There is no way you can make it from frame 5 to frame 6 like that it doesnt make sense at all?
  • 32 3
Judging by the clouds it is a continuous sequence.
  • 21 6
Yup, grinding on one side of the rail and landing on the other...
  • 13 5
i dont hink he is landing on the other side of the rail, its just the wide angle lense destorts the photo making it look like that
  • 8 9
@Crankworks,You took the words right out of my mouth!
  • 9 8
I totally agree with cranxwork, Pegs are for BMX-bikes, not fixies or something
  • 4 5
I like watching stuff like this though......

it's very impressive! Makes me want to try one just for the heck of it.

I'd like to see the next sequence

What do I think of fixed gear freestyle riding? Well... at least it's not rollerblading.
  • 9 3
Fixed gear ridings phenominal, when you dont have trails for your DH bike, grab a fixie and go play
  • 7 3
Im all for mountain biking but its true not all of us live in BC or sumthin.. one reason I started was cuz there wasnt hella haters like in bmxing
  • 9 3
LAAAMMEE but on a serious note I think this sequence kinda sucks....it feels cramped and everything just kinda looks shity
  • 9 4
Anyone who says a fixie is stupid is just missing out, if you have even ridden one they are amazingly fun. And if you have even tried a trick on one you know how hard it is. As for the kid who said pegs are for bmx....hahah we already stole everything else from bmx why not finish the job.
  • 6 3
Can someone tell ''freebord007'' that things speed up when they go downhill.
  • 15 2
I find it hard to believe that a type of bicycle can have a sexual preferance
  • 7 4
No fixes are definitely gay . They love hard landings with the seat up your ass .
  • 4 3
Or your just a homophobic hater who can't see that fixes are doing the exact same thing mtbs did back in the day.
  • 7 4
^ I don't know what's eating your ass but a someone who hates homophobes is a good guy in my book.
  • 4 0
Wow my bad, I didn't mean someone who hates homophobes, I ment a homophobe and a hater.
  • 1 4
@freebord007 "Wtf Pinkbike this is not a sequence?" is not a question so u dont need a question mark.
  • 3 1
Just on a side note, how is this judged? As I would really love the backpack (my 3 year old Dakine has just about fallen apart) but I dont know if its done on props or whatever. Glad so many of you agree with my sentiments.
  • 7 0
In reality no prizes are ever given out. It's another way the Man controls us.
  • 1 0
I guess if fixies are more about the culture, I can get that. But I'll never think they're more practical or capable in any way. I think it's a handicap to ride a fixed gear unless you like pedaling backwards
  • 1 0
eh is it pegs to over? his body doesnt look like its in the right position to hop over the rail in frame 5, frame 6 looks like he's landed on the far side of the rail?
  • 1 0
holy f$#k... he isnt landing on the other side of the rail, he hits the part of most distortion on the lense of the camera which distorts his body making him look like he is further away in the next frame.
  • 1 0
@xpirimint Biggest advantage is the immediate control you get. Which in a commuting setting is really awesome. It's hard to explain, but after years of riding everything under the sun (Road, CycloX, XC, DJ, DH, 29er, Fixie), The single speed fixie is by far the most responsive bike I've ever ridden. It's hard to explain, but if there were any other analogy I could think of, it's like going from driving a RW drive car in a foot of snow, to something with 4WD. It's also why fixed geared bikes were originally velodrome bikes, because in those really tight banked turns with twenty other riders sniffing your a$$ you had to be pinned. Outside the velodrome however.. kinda silly.
  • 2 1
whats with all the idiots hating on different types of biking?
  • 1 2
why are you NOT hating on different types of biking? FYI nobody likes a butt kisser . be proud of what you ride , just havin a laugh Beer
  • 1 1
how am I a butt kisser? because I think haters are idiots? I am proud of what I ride but I dont go around telling everyone riding something different they are gay/useless/stupid etc.
  • 2 1

  • 1 2
Man, this is a rough crowd. Ha! Awesome. I get where some of you are coming from though, because fixie bikes are associated with hipsters, and not everyone likes 'em, the bikes and the sub-culture. Now, for the sake of trying to start a fire here, what say we take away the hipster and his goofy clothes, and we make the rider a drop-dead-gorgeous chick [create your own mental image if you like] wearing a bitchin' pair of hot shorts and, I don't know, a couple of beer labels hardly covering her nipples...and 'she' was the one smashing retarded moves on the same bike, stuff all bouncing and jiggling and stuff...would that be, as some some like to put it, gay?
  • 3 1
just appreciate the rider and his tricks... hate on the gay hipsters who cant do shit on their skinny little fixies not the ones who mob doin 360 bars..hate the players not the game. I ride fixed for street and dj for dirt.. its all the same stuff.
  • 2 1
gbrouse01...I agree with you. Ride on!
  • 2 2
Haters gonna hate, but at the end of the day they are just another a*shole. Not every fixed gear rider is a tryhardwannabehipster, some like the simplicity, the training benefits, their ability to make a commute that much more fun/challenging, and they make a great canvas to show your unique style. I guess this is way above some of your heads. Doubt many of you could hop an inch on a fixie if your lives depended on it, let alone grind a 14 set.
  • 37 7
"hey man did you just gap that 14 set on your fixie?"
"yeah, but you've probably never heard of that before"
  • 32 3
 It appears he was bike-urious...
  • 21 4
The hipsters aren't the problem with fixed gear freestyle, its the poser ass, dubstep listening, obey wearing, high schoolers that use words like "fixie", "YOLO" and "swag". They ride because its fashionable, and do the same repetitive tricks in super uncreative lines. Its sickening, but I guess you have those people in every sport. That being said, there are plenty of sick fixed gear riders out there that can get super tech, fast and creative, but they are few and far between.

Riding a fixed gear is truly fun though, just dont let your friends see.

Freestyle Fixis: The riding is impressive! No matter if you think fixi riders are a bunch of messenger bag wearing hipsters. A buddy and I used to ride urban/street freeride with a guy who rode a fixed gear who could pretty much match everything we were doing on our 26" dirt jumpers (giant stp and specialized p2). I found a deal on one and picked it up a couple months back. I could believe how much cool stuff you can do on them. Not to mention they can be great commuters due to their road-bike-like ride. They are simple, simple simple so if you leave it outside in the rain one day you don't have to to much to worry about. I still prefer riding my dr'r, xc bike, and freeride bike but I do love that fixi. It's more than a fad in my opinion. Fixis are here to stay.
  • 3 0
damn not a single positive response, and yet i bet no one has ever ridden one. bikes are bikes and riding is riding. fixies add a whole different level to riding from tech things and doing tricks to bombing down city streets, and an added adrenaline rush of having to get your feet in the right place (also being able to get slideways). anyone who thoroughly enjoys riding bikes will enjoy riding fixies too because in the end of the day, its about being outside on a bike and getting that oh so craved adrenaline rush that we live for!
  • 2 0
to be honest... there's no sense on riding a fixed bike like if you rode a bmx bike or a street mtb, freestyle fixies? that's just the way that hipsters have to feel like doing something else... and come on! wear a helmet!!! if your wheel had got stuck on that stone drain you would have frontflipped and probably reading the comments in the hospital
  • 4 2
Ya know what? I ride DH and fixed, and I absolutely love both. All this flack fixies have been getting is ridiculous. I guarantee 90% of people talking shit on fixies has never ridden one and really just hates on the general "hipster" aesthetic that goes hand in hand with the fixed image these days. So all I have to say is "f*ck You" to all the retarded people in the internet talking shit just to run their mouths. Yes, I am aware of the irony of my hating on people just for hating....but fixies are fun as shit and most people are missing out.
  • 2 0
Fixed gear freestyle is the next step in the hipster evolution. Hipsters, by nature, are unable to participate in any activity enjoyed by a large number of people (ie, anything mainstream). One day, a hipster looked upon a socially evolved bmxer, rocking a double peg grind down some stairs and thought to himself, "I do so much want to try that, but bmx is so mainstream." The sad hipster looked down at the tastefully rusty fixie bike that was his steed, and had an idea. Much hard work later (actually his baby boomer parents paid a bike shop to do it), the hipster had a fixie with pegs. now, with ironic beard and deflated ballon beanie flapping in the wind, the hipster threw down some hopelessly mediocre tricks while listening to the velvet underground on his iphone. To this day he is still deprived of the glorious (and mainstream) sound on a whirring cassete hub.

My three year old daughters do stair gaps without pegs or pedals on their run bikes. I should take a poorly composed sequence shot of that and send it in for sequence saturday.
  • 2 1
That's Rad. Who cares what you're riding? He mashed that Rail in the same style as a BMX rider. I think this defines the term 'Freeride'. Doing what everyone else is doing, But while riding a less conventional means of bike, or whatever bike you got. Ride hard!
  • 1 0
The best part of riding any type of bike whether it be a road bike, dh bike, xc bike, bmx bike or whatever is coasting down huge hills. I don't care what anyone says but coasting definitely takes the cake on a bike. Bombing down a large hill on a fixie, scary as shit, and not comfortable. Freewheels for life!
  • 4 1
....plus,....some of you guys remind me of the days when snowboards were banned from the resorts,...you know, by narrow minded people who think their shit don't stink

It's a unique taste. I think it's... a little out there, but that doesn't mean I am going to bash it and call it gay.
  • 1 1
I have no problems with it. The way I look at it is it's just another way to ride your bike. Remember how well the 26" wheels were welcomed to the streets? Look at them now. Fixies are being built for that riding now, give it time. It will find it's own place.
  • 4 2
Aside from the topic of fixed gear bikes why is the rider dressed like a pirate!

  • 6 7
so they took fixed gear road bikes and marketed them as "fixies", then they made those into street mtb's but they forgot to lower the seat (and add tire clearance) so you so all you really can do is sit around and try to look cool. but thats alright because thats what "fixies" are all about, posing and marketing schemes.
sure theyre harder to do good tricks on and that can be a little impressive but when you have to hop and skid to get your cranks in the right position for a bunnyhop over a curb its just not that great.

also 700c's and low bottom brackets are garbage
  • 3 3
most of what you complained about is answered by the above picture. the dude has 26" wheels with fat tires, and a neg bb (or else he wouldn't be able to DP that handrail). Its actually a gnar frame. essentially park mtb geo with a taller ST.

but yeah, most "fixie" companies are marketing ploys. even walmart sells cheap ones now.
  • 1 0
