Share the Ride Goes to Tropical Cairns

With the recent World Cup in Cairns, Share the Ride wanted to spread the love of bikes with kids from the local area who may not have been exposed to life with a two wheeled companion. With the help of the Cairns Regional Council and the Healthy Active Schools Program a six week project was undertaken to encourage underprivileged children from four local schools to improve their attendance rate. The children who showed progress were offered the chance to win, at random, one of four bikes to be donated to each school. At the end of the term, names were drawn and the lucky winners were invited to the Cairns Esplanade to receive their brand new Trek Bicycles, courtesy of Discovery Cycles.

The rainy weather failed to keep the eager kids and their families away.

The great team from Discovery Cycles were pumped to give the kids from various Cairns State Schools their bikes generously donated by Pinkbike. Discovery Cylces worked tirelessly to build each bike up for the the kids and also donated locks and helmets to each lucky kid. This great cause couldn t be possible without the generous donation from all.

The bikes were donated to Parramatta State School Gordonvale State School and Cairns West State School and Edge Hill State School. Each school had four students receive a bike based on students who do not have a bike and were either able to show an improved attendance record for the term or were seen to likely benefit from the giveaway by encouraging them to begin riding to school to promote an active lifestyle from a young age.

These kids were given the opportunity to show that they could work harder in order to receive one of the bikes to be given away and rose to the occasion. They now have the means to aid with an active lifestyle and can help build their confidence. They are able to participate in the Healthy Active School Travel program that is being promoted in the Cairns region. Hope to see these kids safely riding their fantastic new Trek bikes.

The Cairns Regional Council reports that the kids are very happy with their bikes and are indeed riding to school! Thanks to everyne who donated to Share the Ride all over the world and thanks to everyone who chipped in locally to make the Cairns distribution a reality.

Bravo! Love seeing the Share The Ride posts! The increased attendance or significant benefit from the giveaway were very creative and fair ways of determining eligibility.

such beautiful yound smiles. i hope for the children's sake that those bikes aren't sold for drugs and alcohol and are well maintained. The unfortunate reality is these buys are likely to be sold by their families, stolen or trashed (not maintained correctly). fantastic iniative by trek and discovery cycles.
