What happens when you take three legends of downhill racing, give them a few beers and then film them in front of a live audience in central London? Soho Bikes TV, that's what!
In this exclusive interview, World Cup commentator, Rob Warner talks to World Cup winner, Josh Bryceland and his teammate and mountain bike superstar, Steve Peat about racing, injuries and their hopes for the coming season. Well, that was the plan; actually they just take the piss out of each other for 15 minutes.
Candid, insightful and damn right funny, sit back and enjoy!
Those three look like they just got out of a pirate movie!!!
great interview, how lucky to be one of the people in the store. The more we hear Josh the best I can understand what he says.
Cheers
Why do people always make comments like this on features about DH riders? Rampage is completely different to anything these guys do, and they would all suck at it. Brendog is the closest of the DH riders to the tricks and confidence of the free riders and even he didn't hit any of the big rampage features and didn't dare flip his mini gaps Same way that when the free riders race downhill most are off the time massively, Niko Vink was 35 seconds off the time at red bull hardline, that was massive
But every time a feature on a DH rider comes up... "would it be ace to see xxxxx at rampage" NO IT WOULDNT! they would get down quicker than anyone else, whip a few jumps, do a few drops. Impressive but not what people want to see at rampage
He did, but quickly realized he could no where near compete with what the guys are doing now, look at what McGarry, Andreu, Semenuk and Rheeder were doing this year, no place among them for downhill riders
These guys get paid to race DH, none would risk even whipping the massive gaps let alone flipping them
Hi there buddy, I would like to see Bryceland because I think he is a stylish rider and it would be interesting to see what lines choices he would choose / build at an event like Redbull rampage. Gee Atherton seemed to enjoy Rampage as well as getting a podium, it would have been great to see Ratboy there.
And dont speak for what people want to see at Rampage, I dont even know what the judges want to see mate, Carson Storch threw down some wicked and quite literally edgy stuff out there this year and he doesnt even cut top 5? And I'm still perplexed by Lacondeguy's winning run because if I remember he just whipped a few jumps and did a few drops. Impressive, but it's not what the people want to see ya'know?
There are a lot of riders at rampage that know they will not win, like R dog who said last year he was there just to have fun. Some are just happy to qualify. I would like to see ratboy there because it would be fun to watch him ride and have his presence there.
And the judging criteria is kinda flawed, or at least, not very accurate; I recall one of the judges also saying something along the lines of "the higher up the tricks are pulled the more points the rider will get"... so was Storch's backflip over the knifedge/ ridge too high for the judges? Admittedly a backflip in a FR/SS competition isnt exactly that much of a big deal anymore, but it was pulled with a completely blind landing that, especially compared to some of the other landings, would have been extremely narrow for Storch to nail..
Lacondeguy's run was full of fluidity and style, I'm not denying that, but if anything that only emphasizes my original point on why I would like to see Ratboy at Rampage; yes, DH racing is his game, and fluidity in that aspect is seriously important, if he isnt racing then style replaces his speed and bam, whats he got? Fluidity and style! He's a wicked rider and I just think we would see a really interesting and exciting performance from him if he is all healthy after the race season...
Hey! For the first 25 years of my life I lived an hour drive from Auschwitz, so fk you! I guess if you lose your Grandpa there, you are entitled to nazi references so I ain't takin sht from some Godwin wanker! You want a nazi reference?! Gluten musen toten! Veganismen uber alles, meaten ist immoralishe fehrtamte toten, toteeen! Got mitt unst hipster ubermenschen, zie drive no auto toten planeten. Das ist Mein schvamp!
Yeah, really interesting to finally hear Josh's take on it. I really want to like the Athertons, but it's hard when they're floating about in a cloud of arrogance all the time. Their professionalism obviously works for them, but thank god for riders like Josh who prove that you don't have to be a robot to win world cups.
In a nutshell : Ratty states that he and Gee don't have an issue with other, but he made the observation that he's colder towards him now that he's become a podium threat; and that there's definitely a distance between the Athertons and the other riders on the circuit. Seems that they stand aloof and don't socialize much.
All of the comments about Rampage and Ratboy not doing well or who would/should do what and so on, to be fair, it's horses for courses look at Brendog and Gee for example, some people are more versatile than others they race DH and compete in Rampage, Gee even won one if I remember correctly, so to say DH'ers can't compete is ridiculous. Yes Rampage has it's own niche set of riders that compete ie Aggy, Andreu, Semenuk etc but this is their angle of the great sport that we all love, and they do best as this is what they specialise in. The point we are getting off is that this video was immense and am I the only one that would love to see a veterans race just for smirks with all of the top 'older' boys racing - Peaty, Warner, Nigel Page, Brian Lopes, Kirt Voreis, the list goes on....Set it up lads!!
you have to love the variety of british accents. that's what english originally sounded like. not the american slang you kind of get used to from watching hollywood movies.
If anyone wants a translation for Josh, let me know. I have no trouble understanding the strange northern accent. (i'm southern by the way) Might have something to do with being married to a lass from Blackpool.
Love that when you comment a video or something else and then, after some hours, the comment got 20 other comments and it's fun to read this! Keep it up guys!
Here is something that I have always wondered: Do our Northern friends write in the same way in which they speak? words missed out of sentences here and there?
I have no problems what so ever. I had more problem understanding locals on the train from Stansted to London, but the least understandable English I have ever encountered was Australian from Cairns where half of each words gets swollen. Wheappens aes da daem whe axle papped ou en I was'nble to fa replacm fasnough
These guy's are funny as duck together! Good collection of typical English banter! Love the fact Ratboy lives on a longboat! It's the way forward...what with property prices over here! Pain in the arse to park in the car park at the local trails tho!
Oh I think a lot of WCDH racers can do well at rampage. Early years Cedric killed it. Gee and Brendog did pretty awesome. They have the ability but my guess is they can't chance the possible injuries.
Got to say this is one of the best discussions ever on Pinkbike. Not one mention of wheel sizes, or enduro. Just how cool these 3 legends are, and how funny we all speak.
Go down Oxford street, then turn onto Berwick street. Sohobikes is down there somewhere. Took me a few attempts to find it too, but I always get lost in London. Damn those big cities!
What you colonials don't grasp is the sheer breadth of regional accents there are in Britain - it isn't just 'Jason Statham' or 'Tom Hiddleston', there's a whole plethora of barely intelligible patter for you to raise an eyebrow at.
"There haven't been any".
This is why Josh is top boy.
Same way that when the free riders race downhill most are off the time massively, Niko Vink was 35 seconds off the time at red bull hardline, that was massive

1) Fluidity and Style
2) Air and Amplitude
3) Tricks
4) Line Choice.
Lancondeguy's run checked off all of the above.
Plus, saying Lancondeguy did a "few drops" is really insulting...
Yeah it was pretty insulting

f*ck...

Christ you southerners need some teaching about the way of the north.
I can't afford London bike prices anyway.
