Specialized Enduro Pro Shorts and Enduro Comp Jersey - Review

Jan 17, 2017
by Mike Kazimer
A warm weather clothing review in the middle of winter? What? I can hear it now, the cries of readers entombed by Old Man Winter's wrath, unable to imagine a time when the land wasn't coated with ice and snow. But bear with me here, because the days are getting longer, and those warm summer evenings are just around the corner. Or you can head to the Southern Hemisphere if you need an immediate climate change...

In any case, once you finish shoveling the driveway, sit back, relax, and imagine that the sun is shining while you read about Specialized's latest riding apparel.

Specialized Enduro Comp Jersey

The Enduro Comp ¾ jersey is made using Specialized's own VaporRize fabric, a polyester material designed to quickly wick moisture away. There's a thicker fabric on the front of the jersey, with a lighter, more ventilated material for the back panel. The cut of the jersey is relaxed, with enough room to fit elbow pads or light armor underneath if necessary. A zippered pocket is located on the righthand side, with enough room to fit a credit card, keys, or other small items.

The Enduro Pro shorts (Specialized gets a pass for their use of the term enduro – they were using it well before it turned into a clichéd marketing phrase) have a relaxed cut, with a 14” inseam that puts the lower hem just below the knee. A generous zippered vent on each leg allows for additional air flow when necessary, and there are plenty of storage options, with two zippered side pockets and a smaller zippered pocket on the back of the waistband. A stretchy back panel to prevent giving the riders behind you from seeing things that can't be unseen, and the fit can be fine-tuned via two velcro straps.

A detachable SWAT bib liner is also included with the shorts, with three stretchy back pockets and a pocket on each leg that make it easy to go pack-free, even on longer rides.

Elasticised velcro straps make it easy to fine-tune the fit after a mid-ride energy food binge.

Performance

I've been wearing the Enduro shorts and jersey regularly for nearly five months now, and they've managed to emerge unscathed, despite regular mud baths and being subjected to my not-so-careful laundry habits. They resist dirt stains well, which may seem like a minor point, but it you're going to shell out the money for actual riding apparel, it's nice to have them look relatively new for more than a couple rides.

Not all riders like ¾ length jerseys, which is why Specialized makes a short sleeved version of the Enduro comp, but I'm a fan - I like having that little extra bit of fabric to ward off branches and blackberry bushes. On really hot summer days the jersey's fabric, especially the front panel, didn't seem overly breathable, and I'd recommend seeking out something lighter if you regularly riding in scorching temps. On the flipside, the fabric's weight was well suited for rides when temps were in the 60s or 70s, times when a long sleeve jersey would have been a little too much. I wouldn't mind seeing the addition of a small goggle / glasses wipe or cloth, but that's a minor detail.

Specialized nailed the fit for the Enduro Pro shorts (at least for my build) – they're not overly baggy, but they aren't silly tight either, with just the right amount of built-in stretchiness. The zippered vents are effective, and they're easy to reach on the fly in order to quickly increase airflow. The zippered pockets are well positioned, and I could toss a phone in the side pocket and a small multitool in the back waistband pocket without having them constantly flap or shift around.

Bib shorts are about as personal of an item as it gets, but the included liner didn't give me any trouble, and it is nice to have the back and leg pockets for those mega-rides where carrying extra food and water is a necessity.

Pinkbike's Take:
bigquotesThe Enduro Comp jersey and Pro shorts have an excellent blend of performance, comfort, and style, all without being overly flashy or unnecessarily complicated. There are countless choices out there when it comes to mountain bike apparel, but Specialized have squarely hit the mark with this collection. - Mike Kazimer

It's funny and all but this over branding of "enduro" on everything is what keeps specialized gear OFF many customers backs...

@paul-bee: Whats with the current trend on hating on helmets the protect you a little better than a XC lid? Fashion over brain function I guess lol! Kids are dumb!!

 @triptex: I get it bro(duro)

@Husker2112: I race enduro. Wearing a fullface, goggles, and riding a bike that holds a water bottle. I don't ride flats anymore, 26" is too small, and I don't wear a pack on rides under 6h.

I am enduro, bro.

@kbonesddeuce: what they need now is a 120 bike called Trail Evo to replace Camber. This is the segment where lots of people in my age are putting money into since Enduro became pasé.

Specialized Trail Evo almost plus - your weapon for the paths of insecurity.

@Husker2112: Theres a pretty good chance you'd still be sniffing my farts bud Smile

@kbonesddeuce: True, although many things had been known as "Enduro" before it was used for mountain biking or a brand.

@WAKIdesigns: that's one bike people here are looking for also. Optic, Stumpy, or Django 29 would all fit the bill.

Somebody pinch me. I just read all the way through the comments on a bike clothing review on pinkbike and didn't read a single comment in this range: "$XXX.XX for a jersey, are you kidding. I got a (choose one: flannel/moto/t-shirt) for (choose one: half that price/a couple bucks/waaaay cheaper than that) and it has lasted me 10 seasons. I say, save your money and spend it on (insert preferred bike component that you beilive to be THE most overlooked bike component available)"

Slow clap pinkbike users slow clap. Seeing this happen here made me wonder what other impossible outcomes could be on the horizon...maybe Trump will actually make America great again.
  • 30 13
 Unfortunately, no, he won't.
  • 6 4
Ok, here you go. Those shorts look ok, price/performance is in line with other premium shorts and even comes with a liner. That jersey is hideous though, unless you want to look like a character out of the Peanuts cartoon, who styled that, Charlie Brown? For the same money I'd rather get something from someone like Club Ride and look halfway decent too.
  • 19 4
$60.00 for a jersey, are you kidding. I got a t-shirt for waaaay cheaper than that and it has lasted me 10 seasons. I say, save your money and spend it on front derailleur screws.

doubt it

Trump won't make America great again or ever. He's the laughing stock of every country, especially Russia once Putin starts to rule over him. Basically, the prices for the biking garments are a laughing stock alltogether. Why is a frickin pair of shorts costs more than a pair of Levi jeans and a jersey costing more than a nice dress shirt. Total BS!
  • 8 0
@CSharp: interesting confluence of concepts...I think jeans and a dress shirt is exactly the clothing that Trump would wear to ride a bike.

@nohit45: I think it was a golf shirt, but he was totally wearing the mom jeans for sure. He was also wearing the i'm-a-dad-who-has-given-up-on-style-generic-running-shoes. Terrible "active wear" is a staple of all presidents regardless of their party or policy.
  • 1 0
@SlodownU: You should go Zoic, and look like that overweight dad who just got into riding with his 1998 Schwinn FS bike, now used mostly by car wash employees.
  • 23 2
 That jersey looks pretty sharp
  • 26 4
No big logos: excellent. Colour patches: why? Do bike companies seriously not understand that some of us just want a nice fitting tech jersey that doesn't make you look like an absolute tool? I'll stick to my cheap plain synthetic t-shirts for now.
  • 1 0
I prefer the cobra blue one, or the red and black
  • 4 0
Hope not. Chaffing is bad enough, couldn't imagine a jersey that cuts you.
  • 6 2
@Lornholio: While we're discussing color, why are there no rainbow patterns for us LGBTQ riders out there?
  • 12 0
@DJ-24: Just win a world championship and get some rainbow stripes. easy peasy
  • 1 0
Do sharp rocks cut through this as easily as any other (MUCH CHEAPER) moister wicking clothing
  • 5 0
Not a fan of acute angles.
  • 1 1
@Lornholio: Synthetic T's are $5-$10 at Walmart, it's all I wear. Then again I also use plain synthetic athletic shorts that I also bought at Walmart and a Surfas comfort seat.

Haters hate my ways.
  • 2 0
@WaterBear: Bro, how do you even ride?

@Lornholio: Running tops are styled pretty mellow and cheap as chips in comparison.

 @the-one1: nice!

Guys do you even put keys and phone in your pockets while riding? I personally don't want to be stabbed with key or crack my display, only food and id in my pockets.
  • 6 1
Years ago a dude by me riding with keys in the pocket fell, punctured his femoral artery, and bled out. Between that, and watching Cedric's video where he almost bled out (different reason), I keep the keys out of my pocket.
  • 5 0
Agreed, and not only that but I hate having stuff bouncing around in pockets while I'm riding. All my stuff goes in my pack.
  • 10 1
I own a few specialized kits and they are some the best ever that I have used. I'm 185lbs and 5'11" and I do find I have to size up and they tend to fit a bit small but the quality is fantastic and as always specialized stands behind their gear and if you do have a issue they have your back. The prices in Canada seem to be on par with other brands like TLD and fox etc.
  • 12 0
Now you can ride enduro on your enduro in your enduro
  • 2 0
 in your enduroos
  • 10 1
I can't confirm that the shorts resist dirt stains well - my light blue Enduro pro shorts still show fifty shades of brown after two seasons of riding & washing.
  • 2 0
In the exact same boat here.
  • 3 0
@theteaser @spinko maybe try wiping after using the bathroom... /s
  • 1 0
Cover them in WD-40 and use a hard bristle dish brush. I've got some white motos and they look like New after that
  • 3 0
Specialized also makes a merino wool version of this jersey which IMO is even better looking, and was very light and cool to wear all summer. Couldn't recommend enough. www.specialized.com/us/en/men/clothing/enduro-drirelease-merino-34-jersey/116338
  • 1 0
That red/black combo looks pretty damn good, and I do love merino. Stuff works in all kinds of conditions
  • 1 0
@kjjohnson: I went for the green/grey. Pretty great looking.
  • 1 0
@bsavery: You take any falls with it? Always like the merino stuff, but feel that its hard for it to be durable just given the nature of the fabric.
  • 2 0
@dhx42: It's a bit tighter weave than most merino stuff I've had, btw drirelease is a wool/poly blend. So far no big falls but it seems pretty hardy compared to other wool. Very tight weave.
  • 1 0
 @bsavery: Good to know. thanks
  • 6 2
$60 for a polyester shirt and it doesn't even come with full sleeves...I'd also love for someone to explain why mountain bike shorts almost always cost close to $100 or more. Insane.
  • 1 0
Shorts with bibs...bibs can be spendy on their own. Combo deal. As always wear wht you want
  • 1 0
 Enduro specific bro
  • 7 2
I agree. I even work at a shop that is a Specialized dealer, and its still pretty spendy with a discount.
  • 4 0
See how much they are charging you to look Enduro? $190 for shorts and a shirt are you f@cking out of your mind? Where are all the Richie Rich's at?
  • 2 0
Cheaper than TLD with bib liner.
  • 2 1
I have this set. I'm not rich. Considering that I have a pair of 7 year old specialized DH shorts that are still going strong, I have no problem spending money on stuff that lasts. My wife has a pair of cheap Fox shorts. They look like shit after 2 seasons of very light riding (maybe 15 rides total). Price was about 50% of what I paid, but the difference is that we will be replacing hers more than 2x my pair at this rate. Plus the extra money typically buys you more features as well.
  • 2 0
Trick is not to buy into fashion trends. Stick with basic black for shorts.
  • 1 0
@spinko: trick is to find a sick pair of zoic shorts w removable chamois shorts, sealed seams and weatherproof zippers at a fraction of the price because some Richie Rich's returned them to rei due to a small repairable hole in the bottom of one pocket. Great success high five
  • 1 0
@weebleswobbles: Those look great! Thanks for the tip.
  • 2 4
I am done with Enduro. I am becoming a trail-sexual and demand everybody to use the "tree" pronounce when speaking about me. I.e. Tree went riding with happy trees friends. They were glad to like with treem.

I just want you to respect me for not buying into this Enduro sht! Marketriarchy is limiting my rights to express my bikesonality
  • 2 0
I picked up these shorts this year, they are fantastic. Part of the reason that I did was because they were only 15$ more than many of the other shorts in the store, but the big difference was that they came with full bib SWAT liners. The other shorts didn't come with liners. I love it. Specialized makes great clothing. My DH shorts are Specialized as well. They are 7 years old and still going strong after many crashes, washes, etc. The stitching is great, no loose threads, etc.
  • 1 0
Gerry Shorts are my go to all summer. I can get them at Costco, so they are readily available and cheap. They fit well and stretch, so I can mtb, trail run, lift, and swim/wakeboard in them. They are made of wood fiber which is nifty, and they have plenty of pockets. Best of all they have minimal branding, which is nice because I don't want to be a billboard for "TROY LEE DESGINS LOUD AND EVERYWHERE!!!"
  • 1 0
I just have to say that SWAT is the shiznit. For any ride less than 3 hours, there is no need for a pack; I love seeing those dudes geared up for what looks like an all-day backcountry adventure when they're really just going to Starbucks for a latte.
  • 5 1
Specialized gear is good stuff but man is it pricey.
  • 2 0
Looks like the spring collection from Huffy.
  • 4 1
I find that filling the Swat pockets with ice helps you cool down on hot days.
  • 2 0
I freeze a collapsible water dealeo and put that in the upper back pocket of my RF stash bib during socal summers...

Spesh makes quality shit - whether you like them or not
  • 2 1
60-70° isn't scorching eh? Or are you using that silly temperature scale that only the Bahamas, Belize, the Cayman Islands, Palau, and one other country I can't remember use?
  • 3 0
Am I the only one who just wears street clothes to ride except a chamois and shoes?
  • 1 0
All good until street clothes get wet....
  • 1 0
Before anyone goes and does this, PLEASE don't put tools or keys in your jersey/swat shorts pockets, unless you want something sharp and metal stabbing into your spine when you crash.
  • 1 0
Guess that depends on your key.
  • 3 1
Yeah the gear is pretty good but I have a suspicious stain on my 2015 jersey that won't wash out.
  • 5 0
I told you to open your mouth.
  • 2 0
Is it just me or putting your keys in a tiny pocket on the side of your jersey just a really bad idea?
  • 1 0
I keep my space on a lanyard and wear it around my neck, or put it on my camel back.

I found the shirt and shorts wraped up nice and neat in my SWAT compartment when i got the bike home. Dam you Specialized....I wanted the SWAT tool unstead.

  • 1 0
Do they make the gloves in the model's size, or are they one size sorta doesn't fit all?

First time a pair of shorts is on top of PB page sunset to sunrise. Please take it down, nobody cares. And they are ugly.
  • 1 0
The Jersey covers your nipples and the short your balls. Using both you are good to go. End of the review.

Beautifull SOMBRIO glowes not Specialized glowes?????

And the look of the shirt is really close to the Sombrio ones, by the way (pijama style, not race oriented)
  • 1 0
I just wear my regular clothes for biking
  • 4 7
Looks like p00 compared to the spesh enduro jersey Graves wore last season. That was nice and the limited edition Crankworx one was reet nice. This design looks like they went out of their way to a). Make you look slow and b). Ugly as possible. Yes this is an emotional subject for me.....

3/4 sleeves are the sleeves of the Devil...jus' saying.
  • 9 0
in that case, hail satan. 3/4 Raglan style sleeves are my fav.
  • 1 0
@groghunter: Agreed. short sleeves leave a lot of room for "crash rash" on the arm, long sleeve too hot for the dead of summer.
  • 2 0
@JC9won4: I just like not having a cuff at a joint. short sleeves hang in the crook of my elbow & get irritating.
  • 1 1
 Love a 3/4 sleeve jersey.
