Spotted: New Downhill Fork From BOS

Jun 20, 2014

Spotted BOS has a new downhill fork in the works. Details are scarce but lowers and top cap are slightly different than the Idylle Rare and word is that the internals have been changed as well.

It looks like BOS has a new downhill fork in the works. Details are scarce, but the lowers and top cap are slightly different than the Idylle Rare, and word is that the internals have been changed as well. The arch looks like it has enough room to accommodate 27.5" wheels, but it's what's on the inside that has us interested. BOS' products are beginning to make their way over to North America, and we'll try to get our hands on the new fork for some proper Whistler testing as soon as possible.

Since we're as much in the dark about what's going on internally as you, Pinkbike's readers, what would be on your list of dream features for a downhill fork?

 no service

range of service definitely lets them down. They have got such praise from so many mags and testers but the lack of local support is a killer. We have some support here in Australia but its still not the same sort of level where you can walk into almost any store and get fox and RS sorted. I still love their stuff, keen to see these reviewed.

thats what i just hate about it! not enogh shops who can service them, just a pain in a**, i love the performace of the shocks and forks, but having to pay 40-70€ just to get it shipped to service and cos of the shippings lose 2-3weeks of ride time is just cos cant get it serviced near enogh.

Getting no service? Try holding your phone out the window.

The problem is, not getting to buy seal kits to service it myself, and getting it serviced locally in Finland, had 2 options, send it to Ireland or France, that cost a lot just for shipping.
  • 4 1
im lucky as i have an awesome shop in Gland Switzerland who get things done with bos easily and quickly. im running the void and the rare 2014s and couldnt be happier.
  • 19 11
wait.... heres a great idea. learn how to do it yourself.
  • 11 4
wait here is a better idea, get the experts to do it on a 24 hr turn around as i can afford it, just saying as already stated the parts are notoriously difficult to acquire. everything else on the bike i can wrench, but the sus not for me en plus i dont have the time. just saying.
  • 13 7
Servicing a fork is not rocket science. There are hundreds of videos online.
  • 14 4
if u have the parts yes. but what about the shock. u know how to service a void? they do i dont. they wont fuk it up, i may. they have all the parts tools and time, i dont. for me its the best option, not saying it is for everyone but it is for me.
  • 7 7
Even servicing a shock isn't rocket science.
  • 7 2
good for you lot. just wondering if u actually read my comment? if not ill re cap for you, time, parts, tools, know how. they got it i havnt. and i repeat its the best solution for me but not everyone has the spare cash. i could service my car but i dont. thats not rocket science either.
  • 13 3
plus i know, lets stop paying LBS and mechanics to do what they have trained for, lets all put them out of a job and really give the biking industry a helping hand. I prefer to pay some one to service my gear because i can. they will prob do a better job than me. if they dont then they will have to do it again wont they. If you cant afford to pay some one else then service them yourself, good on you. i have no problem with this, so why do u have a problem with me paying bike mechanics to do what they are good at?
  • 2 1
 Go to www.enduroforkseals.com
They sell seal and wiper kits that for me, have worked way better than the seals and wipers that come stock
  • 1 0
yeah, but not for deville, and on each service need atleast replace all seals on the air side..
  • 2 1
There's always going to be people who pay LBS to do work. I saw a dude push a $10,000 road bike into the shop the other day and ask them to change the brake pads and adjust the rear derailleur. For me, it's worth it to invest in the tools and knowledge to service my own stuff, because I know I'm more likely to keep my bike in good shape if I can just do a quick service at home. It's not about hating LBS, it's about becoming one with the bike.
  • 3 3
but we are talking servicing highly tuned suspension, not pads or aligning mechs. so as stated for me my choice is the best option for me.
  • 2 2
But changing the oil and seals in a fork doesn't affect the tune...
  • 5 3
Mattygee it sounds like your the one who has a problem. nobody cares if you refuse to learn anything about your bike your the person mechanics crackwise about when you leave the shop.
  • 5 4
think what u like my mechs happen to be my friends to. so u keep living in your world and ill live in mine. people trying to force their opinion on others is where the problem starts. whilst i havnt criticised people for servicing and repairing their own suspension, i am being criticised for not and am now being told that my friends are laughing behind my back because i use the service they provide. U guys, so funny. And fyi ilike bikes i do everything on my bike bar the suspension. all my bikes have been built by me including the wheel build but i guess you read through the comments correctly before you made your comment. Now all i did was respond to comments that stated that it was extremely difficult to get bos forks serviced and said that i was lucky because i had a dealer very close so for me it was no problem. that is it. nothing else, no dissing anyone, no critiscing, just a fricking comment. now im being which hunted because i dont have the tools or the time and prefer to use a service that is there. sorry if u guys dont like that.

 Dream features? errrrrrrr

Hi/Low Comp controls
Hi/Low Reb controls
Adjustable Midvalve?
Proper pinch bolt dropouts
Postmount for a 203mm rotor only
Fully tunable shimstacks
Some method of lubing the oil seals without opening the fork?
No plastic bullcrap
None of this adjustable bottom out rubbish. Pointless extra weight. Tune bottom out with oil volume.

Thats about all I can think of right now...
  • 39 1
Sounds like a Marzocchi 380 to me lol Plus a TI spring and fully serviceable at home
  • 6 0
 EXACTLY!
  • 5 1
haha. Did kinda think that while I was typing...good old zocchi
  • 4 1
Howsabout tool-less (external) valves to burp the fork a la 40?
  • 5 1
No Tool-less! Just no. if you want a burp port just use a grub screw PLEEEEAASEE! Tool free sucks
  • 3 0
@gabriel. I wish I could give more then 1 prop. So many problems with tool free, so much more maintenance.. Incidentally, every feature except the post mount for 203mm... Sounds like my Marzo Shivers (even down to grub screw burp ports). lol

I have the BOS Idylle RaRE and Void in the US and have not needed to service yet. The intervals are pretty long (1 year for an oil change, 2 years for a rebuild) so I really don't mind sending it off to someone for maintenance once a year.
  • 22 5
 Ya but, whistler. Eats. Bikes.
  • 5 1
Meh, run for run I found other bike parks to be just as hard on my equipment as Whistler.

I have always been more then jealous on my friends idylle. We where riding Schladming all the time and his fork only got better over time vs. my F40 which I wanted to send back for another service at the end of the first full day of riding... Next DH fork for me will be a BOS for sure.
  • 4 1
Mont ste-anne is the roughest shit around.
  • 1 0
For sure, it states in the manual that if you race or ride intensively on a regular basis then the intervals are halved. But it's none of the "30 hours" BS that Fox requires and the BOS stuff can definitely shrug off punishing riding.
  • 1 0
 Agreed, Mont ste-anne is unforgiving...
  • 2 1
Sound like my kind of mountain! Road trip any1?
  • 2 0
i also have a BOS Idylle Rare fork and i live about two hours out of whistler. i go there almost every weekend and ride my local trails frequently throughout the time that i'm not at whistler and my fork have never needed a rebuild in the 6 months that i've had it. it is the best all around fork i have ever owned and i am very pleased with BOS.
  • 16 1
Broke college student/bike mechanic can actually afford it.
  • 5 7
Bike mechanics usually get products at cost and typically have the most dialed and sickest bikes other than full fledged pros... They are probably in the small percentile who can afford it.
  • 12 1
So you want to buy a Ferrari for the price of a used Civic?
  • 3 0
They will be able to afford the Idylle when the new fork comes out..
  • 17 0
When you make minimum wage as a bike shop mechanic stuff at cost is still expensive as all hell. Until you've done it, don't pass judgment. However, you are right, bike mechanics do have some dialed rides, mostly because they live, eat and sleep bikes.
  • 12 0
too right! my bike has all the best kit....from 4 years ago.
  • 9 0
Yeah, I work two jobs so I can pay rent and my multi-thousand dollar school fees each term, and extra money for bike parts is hard to come buy, but when you do live, eat, and sleep bikes like me, then yeah, our bikes are freaking dialed. I bet my X-9 rear mech works better than most of the average joes XO mech. So affordable parts that work well are a serious god send to mechanics, like Shimano Deore brakes... god send. I'd like a god send fork!!

ditto: broke blue collar father: family of four downhillers has to make due with with Boxxer RC, frequent lubes and light springs.
  • 5 0
I'm a bike mechanic, check my bike Big Grin
  • 4 0
Big Grin Shimano are indeed the best. Their cheapo stuff works as well as everyone elses top end stuff. Nearly EVERY part is available as a spare and best of all, you get free shipping on all spare parts! Woo for Shimano!
Current front brake = m810 caliper, zee lever. Works like a charm, could probably stop a truckSmile
Current rear brake = Deore. simple as. will also have a good go at at least slowing down a truck.
  • 3 5
i had one set of deores and they were literally awful. there wasn't even a hint of power, and despite all the internet hate there is for avid, i can admit that i got a pair of elixer 5's and they are much much better. side note, ive been running avid code r's on my dh bike and they are going 2 seasons strong without a bleed. unearthly power.
  • 1 0
did your deores have the new shape stubby levers?
  • 2 0
 yeah, why?
  • 4 0
Cuz you're the only person ever to dislike those brakes. Bad bleed? Contaminated pads or rotor? Something was off cuz they usually feel just like XT and XTR. Current gen Shimano brakes are the benchmark and Deores are simply slightly heavier versions of the top stuff.
  • 3 0
 Yeh. ^^^what he said.

Either that or badly aligned calipers. It really makes a huge difference on any brake, not just shimanos, but its easier to set shimanos up worse than most if you aren't paying attention due to their huge pad clearance. Set up properly, with a good bleed and good pads you really shouldn't have any issues as far as power goes.

YO DAWG, I HEARD YOU LIKE ARCHES ON YOUR FORKS! SO I PUT ARCHES ON YOUR FORK ARCHES! STRAVA!
  • 7 0
Their founder, Olivier Bossard, had said in a VitalMTB interview that thanks to the R&D and testing with the Hutchinson UR Team, they developped a new dampper which he called "revolutionary".
So whatever is inside it, if this guys calls it revolutionary, it's gonna be gooood
  • 2 0
everyone who wants to sell something calls it 'revolutionary'
  • 1 0
But we're talking about the guy who stopped producing MTB suspension (which was THE best) because he was looking for a new challenge. Not just some rich corporate bastard looking to make even more money.
  • 4 0
My nephew has been riding an idyll RaRe and a Stoy rear for a whole season now, with zero problems. Fork still has a way better initial feel to it than my freshly tf-tuned 40. Service is most definitely not an issue.
  • 3 0
Their suspension is AMAZING, BUT.... IT TOOK 13 MONTHS FOR ME TO GET A NEW SPRING FOR MY RARE IDYLLE, AND THAT'S WITH ME HOUNDING THEM CONSTANTLY! That SUCKS! But damn, their suspension is so plush...
  • 5 2
About time they put some knobs in those adjustments! Having to take from the bag a wrench and a flat screwdriver to adjust rebound and compression it's just crazy.
  • 6 4
No its not crazy, its good! Tool free adjust is one of the worst things to happen to cycling imo. I always have allen keys in my bag, and its not like I adjust my damping every 5 minutes. twice per ride absolute max. I don't really want to be carrying around loads of knobs and dials on my bike. They add weight, adjust themselves when you crash, or worse, snap off. And people fiddle with them without telling you and you spend the next five minutes wondering why your forks feel like shit suddenly. allen key adjuster ftw!
  • 7 1
 Dont think it's spotted.
  • 4 0
Something that works but I don't need to sell a kidney to buy it....
  • 4 2
Inverted, like the good old days with Nico. I'm fine with a proprietary hub and wider flange spacing. Please.
  • 1 0
 Right on!
  • 2 0
Clearance for 27.5 but testing on a 26". Odd. Any chance we could have a peep at the dropouts?
  • 2 1
The Commencal Supreme DH accept both 26" and 27.5", you just need to change the rear link to fit a 27.5" tire. Smile But I can't see if it's the 27.5" link on those pictures... :/

Edit : looks like it's the 26" link.
Also..... : www.pinkbike.com/news/Commencal-Supreme-DH-650B-first-look-2013.html
  • 3 0
No, they're actually 2 different bikes. You can fit a 650b wheel in the 26 frame if you put it in long position, but the rest of the geometry (bb drop, chainstay stiffness,..) isn't "650b compatible".
Apparently the team is sticking to the 26 version. From Cam Cole's Facebook: "Putting faith back in the 26 this week until we can improve the feeling on the 27.5 supreme dh"

I would love to see a fork with some decent pinch bolts and I really like the idea of fox's 36 dual quick release for the through axel instead of 8 really easy to strip bolts. Would also love to see more high end spring forks instead of air. Personaly I won't buy an air fork unless I'm only xc ing.
  • 1 1
Ive got a fox 36 2012 has those nice dual quick releases. Love em , easiest wheel on off ever. After a custom tune my f36 kashima is pretty sweet. Thanks god I never got a cTD. My dream fork.
  • 1 0
i am still running my '09 BOS Idylle. Still very happy with it. only 2 service done. Will wait for this. An Idylle is enough for me.
  • 2 0
Someone can tell me what is that hole for? saving weight? Wink
  • 6 0
 Speed. More holes=more speed.
  • 2 0
Yes, but will it make me ride like a boss?
  • 1 1
I have a feeling that the hole in the arch is basically just going to be a window for shit just to fly right in and muck things up
  • 2 0
Ive said it once I'll say it again, AVALANCHE FORKS RULE, HANDS DOWN.
  • 1 0
I'm sure they do but they are heavy...
  • 1 0
 Nah your just weak...
  • 3 0
haha. I ride with a Shiver which is 4kg (a tad lighter than an avalanche) so I laugh when people think a fox 40 at 3kg is heavy.
  • 2 0
In the end their all good forks. I guess its whatever suits and performs well for you
  • 2 0
Yeah but I like the fact I don't have to service my shiver every five minutes! Twice a year at most!
  • 1 0
Looks neat! but it must cost like a million euros.
  • 1 0
