Ask Us Anything with SR Suntour - Finished!

Mar 31, 2016
by Mike Levy

What company comes to mind when you're considering a new fork? I'm willing to be that SR Suntour isn't high on the list, at least not right now. Probably most often thought of as a budget-minded brand - their Aion fork won Best Value Product of the Year for 2015 - SR Suntour is working to change the notion that their suspension is what you upgrade from, and flip the script to be what people upgrade to. Don't believe they can do it? Sure, while SR Suntour might not have the marketing-powered cachet of the Big Three, the largest suspension manufacturer in the world certainly does have the resources to make it happen.

This year sees the company launch two new performance-minded products that they're confident will have their forks matching their rivals' offerings, but at an appreciably lower price-point: the Piston Compensator System (PCS for short), and a new, four-way adjustable sealed damper cartridge called the R2C2 that allows rider to tune low- and high-speed rebound and compression externally.

Piston Compensator System

SR Suntour's PCS is actually an IFP, otherwise known as an internal floating piston, that allows the fork's damping cartridge to be bled free of any air that would otherwise be in the system. If there were both no IFP and no air, the fork wouldn't compress because there would be no room for oil displacement as the damper rod entered the cartridge under compression loads. IFP's come in two flavours, air-backed or spring-backed, with SR Suntour using the latter approach, one that they say is more cost effective, repeatable in production, and more reliable than an air-backed IFP.

The other way to get the job done is to use an expanding bladder, which SR Suntour does acknowledge would provide less friction than a spring-backed IFP. But a bladder system is said to be much more difficult to make reliable, as some of SR Suntour's rivals have found out over the years.
SR Suntour PCS

The simple and proven concept of the Piston Compensator System is not new - it's been around for many, many years inside of competitor's forks and shocks. SR Suntour's goal, however, is to bring the benefits of a sealed cartridge damper with an IFP system (damping consistency thanks to 1Nm of back-pressure provided by the IFP and the spring behind it) to lower price-points. In other words, better suspension that costs less.

SR Suntour

Four-Way Adjustable R2C2 Damper Cartridge

Is having more adjustments more better? That depends on who you ask, but I have a feeling that SR Suntour would say 'yes' given that their new damper offers four-way adjustability: low- and high-speed compression, and low- and high-speed rebound, all able to be fiddled with externally. This makes SR Suntour's R2C2 cartridge, along with Marzocchi's C2R2 damper, the most adjustable of any when talking about dials to turn. Adjustments don't matter if they don't have any effect on the ride, however, and SR Suntour's Dan Dacko explained that they designed the R2C2 damper so that there is a noticeable and consistent difference between each click of the dial.
SR Suntour R2C2 damper dials

''We wanted each click to matter in a sense,'' Dacko explains. ''We wanted to make the compression and rebound consistent and correlate to each other.'' The new R2C2 damper with the Piston Compensator System is only available in the Durolux 27.5'' all-mountain fork and the RUX downhill offering, although it'd make sense to see SR Suntour use a simpler version of the damper in other models as well.

Got all that? Post your on-topic questions below and SR Suntour's panel of athletes, sales crew, and engineers will have an answer for you.

I've been riding an Auron for ~2yrs now, and gone through multiple RC2 cartridges, most have self-destructed mid-ride by some portion unthreading itself and losing damping oil into the lowers, once while in Nepal, luckily I brought a spare. When the damping is good its good, but it's tough for me to recommend the fork to friends when they ask for my opinion. Between multiple cartridges, the comp/reb damping varies noticeably. I believe I'm riding the fork within its intended use, but the reliability is rather low. Is this something unique to me? Will your new generation of dampers address reliability and consistency?

Suntour is an excellent company as far as service, value and performance. I love my Auron. I started out on their Epicon. Both awesome forks for the application.

Suntour brings me back a few decades but respect due a true mtb company. My question is will you have available suspension solutions for the front end, or will you delve into rear suspension?

Seriously Suntour? you aren't going to address this? As a smaller firm (in the mtb fork market), I really want you to succeed. Having more competition in the suspension market is hugely beneficial to consumers (more competition bla bla) but if you aren't even willing to address a well-worded, succinct, and seemingly legitimate claim about one of your products malfunctioning, I have to wonder what your goals are. For the time being I'll stick with my pike.

The early production Auron's did have a couple rare cases of the cartridge coming un threaded at the middle joint. SR Suntour changed to a different formula on the thread locking compound and the problem went away.

Your Durolux seems like a great fork, especially for the price of its competitors.....
But why SHOULD it be my new fork, compared to other name brand mid travel forks?
Cheers
  • 24 0
I think you answered your own question. The article even mentions their main goal as aiming to beat their competitors on price.
  • 4 5
I think you're missing the point; why would I choose their new forks, rather than a brand I'm very happy with. Cost is a factor for sure, but it's only 1/4 of the question
  • 3 2
For me I saw a guy doing massive hits with a Durolux fork, and that gave me confidence since my Marzocchi dirt jumper 2 broke off at the stancions in the past (Marzocchi was very great with servicing it, and returning the fork mind you). I also had an SR Suntour fork bend horizontally where the headtube meets the crown in the past, but I was probably over riding it's purpose, and I think that's part of the reason for the 1.5" tapered steer tubes they have now.
  • 1 1
 double posted...smh
  • 10 0
@Waldon83 There are a lot of great options out there to choose from and it probably comes down to your style and if that meshes with SR Suntour design philosophy on the Durolux. With the new Durolux R2C2 we wanted a very robust fork designed for pretty aggressive rowdy riding. We put more emphasis on durability than being the lightest fork on the market. After having our pro riders out on it for about a year they report its super stiff chassis and does not develop creaks in the crown area.

We made it compatible with both 110x20 mm and 100x15 hubs so it's versatile depending on what you want for wheels.

Last the new R2C2 damper goes toe to toe with the damping of the best out there, is easier to bleed with common tools, and doesn't break the bank.

Oh yeah and you'll dig that integrated fender if you ride in slop.

Darren Salsbury - SR Suntour
  • 4 0
 @SRSuntour: I'm convinced
I love my (insert name brand fork) pike, but after all my reading, the Durolux seems like the way to go. Especially how well developed it has become.
Breaking the bank is a big one for many of us, but I have the confidence in spending less and still getting a great product!
Thanks @SRSuntour !!

The suntour fork that came on my $600 bikes like Specialized Hardrock was pretty much rigid and weight at least 3 times more than a rigid fork. Are you planning on making better low end models and how how will suntour win customers like me who have only known suntour as the lowest end forks?
  • 20 1
How does that compare to suspension forks that come on other $600 aluminum framed bikes? I think a Rock Shox Jett or whatever from Manitou is comparable.
  • 26 1
agreed - regardless of brand the fork on a $600 bike will not be light or well dampened. At that price it will be a heavy pogo stick attached to a wheel
  • 22 0
Your problem is you only spent 600 bucks on a bike my friend lol not laughing at you, it's just you get what you pay for
  • 5 1
@bishopsmike Mentioning the Jett brings back memories. Friend had a Hardrock with a Jett way back in the day. No matter what we did we could not get that thing to use more than an inch of travel. Might as well have been rigid.
  • 13 0
Still a valid question IMHO. Who else could bring half-decent suspension to cheap bikes than a powerhouse like Suntour?
  • 2 1
My friend had a working marzocchi fork on his hardrock. It was way better than my rst fork. Cost about the same too. Really... why not use cheap/heavy lowers and uppers, but make it possible to put real dampers in the low end forks so that if somebody wants to upgrade they have more options besides get a new fork entirely? I'd love it if I had a cheap bike, and I could put in a new damper for 50 bucks that made a legit difference.
  • 8 1
Honestly guys, the XCR-Air and XCR-Coil forks that come on some $600-$900 bikes are pretty damn good for the price. Not sure how long since you've been on forks at that level but I've sampled my friend's $700 Diamondback and my fiancee's Vitus. Both those forks are very smooth and stiff (32mm stanchions) and have okay adjustability (the air one is better, obviously). They're heavy, but more than good enough to push yourself a bit on the trails.

If you go down to the XCT level then yeah that kinda sucks. But so does everything else down at that level. But Suntour in the US has an upgrade program where you can swap out these cheap forks for something better (Raidon, Epicon) at a discount.
  • 1 0
I don't mind my xcr coil, sure the dampening is not the best, but with the lockout and adjustability I can easily switch between 0-3 inches of travel on a 4 inch fork
  • 2 0
@Mtbkid21: I actually used the latest XCR fork. they cost like 50-60USD and i'm surprised how smooth the spring was. I also rode for a good 1 year the XCM fork and it only gave me 2 inches of travel somehow. it was horrible and was literally an anchor. the xcr is lighter and smooth for singletrack, clen without much rocks. but go fast on rocky sections, it'll get overwhelmed real fast. then again, its not one designed to tackle harsher terrain.

but for 50-60USD, good value really..
  • 12 0
 @abzillah
Specialized Hardrock usually come with a very budget oriented fork. So it get's down to the old saying, "light, inexpensive, strong....pick any two". Based on the price point of the bike they chose strong and inexpensive so it's weighs more than a rigid or higher end fork.

That all said it shouldn't feel rigid. Either the spring rate could be too high for your rider weight (we have lighter springs available vs standard stock spring) or it's in need of service. If it needs service I would recommend taking the bike into your local dealer to get some fresh seals, slider sleeves, and lube.

 @mtbdude562
The new Rux R2C2 is a stellar fork. The 38 mm stanchions and the design of the lowers make for one of the most laterally stiff forks in the DH world. The new R2C2 damper has shown to be very capable even at the shaft speeds of World Cup DH. It is a proven strong fork as seen at countless Rampage runs including supporting Sorge during his winning run last year. It doesn't hurt having fully in house manufacturing which keeps the cost down vs competitors.

Darren - SR Suntour
  • 10 0
I will explain the benefits overall or the way we look at things.
The RUX is built for durability and reliability rather than being the lightest on the market.
The R2C2 as Mr. Levy stated, might have more friction but is that noticeable while riding, that depends on who you are. But it is much easier to service and should give longer service intervals.
The RUX (and all other forks in the line) is simple, there are as few parts as necessary to get the job done right.
The RUX uses a coil negative which is more reliable than an air negative and provides a different feel, some like that and some dont, its supple.
The RUX can be torn apart without special tools.
The 2016 RUX has bleed ports which help remove that built up pressure and it can also be used to quickly lube wipers for smoothness.
Its different rather than better, because each fork has its positives and negatives. All compromise in different ways.

Why is purchasing one of your forks so much more difficult than with your competitors? If I wanted to buy an Auron in the UK I have to get a distributor to order me one, whereas pretty much anything else is a couple of clicks from an online retailer.

 Hi.

Thanks for your inquiry. We do have it available for you to purchase at just a few clicks online.

The short answer is we're better and manufacturing and OEM sales than aftermarket sales but we're working on improving the aftermarket every year.

There are two distributors for SR Suntour in the UK, Moore Large Co, and Greyville. I just checked their websites and Moore Large Co. has the Auron in stock.

Will there be an R2D2 Damper in the works?
  • 7 2
How many downhill fork do you sell compare to enduro fork ? Just curious about enduro market importance in bike industry in general.
  • 4 0
There are far more 150-180mm travel Trail/enduro forks being sold worldwide compared to DH forks. Mainly due to the fact that a true DH bike is not the best up hill peddler and its not a versatile tool for everyday riding (unless you have a chair lift out your back door). More importance for Trail/endurance for sure, because we all have trails that we need to pedal up and down on.

Dan- SR SUNTOUR
  • 3 0
 @Groscreux
Volume of sales correlates to stanchion size in a way. Entry level to mid level forks are highest volume and smallest stanchion sizes of 28 - 32 mm. The Rux is largest stanchion size in our line up at 38 mm but is the lowest volume. The Enduro forks in the 34 - 36 mm range sit right in the middle of all that.

As a company we support high end development in all categories from XC 32 mm, Enduro 34 - 36, and DH 38 mm.

Hi guys, thanks for taking questions!

1. Do you have a solution for air trapped in the fork lowers which commonly results in a harsh feeling fork. This happens when you change elevation, bottom out hard or temp change. This seems to be an issue across all manufacturers. Currently solution: zip tie seal/wiper.

2. Will you have demo units at Sea Otter or other venues this year?
  • 5 0
Hey Yes we will have demo's of RUX, Durolux R2C2 and Auron at Sea otter. Come see us at Booth 180-182. There will be happy hour on Saturday as well. Yes we have a solution on the Durolux 27.5 and RUX, we have 2.5mm bleeder screws on the back of the legs. Does exactly what you need. It can also act as a quick touch up lube. Dan- SR SUNTOUR

I've got a Durolux that keeps losing air pressure after the first few hits. Also noticed that the air piston in my fork stays high in the leg, whereas the air piston in my brother's Durolux stays located towards the bottom of the leg. Any insight as to why I'm losing pressure?
Thank you.
  • 3 0
If you are losing pressure, the air seal on the piston most likely needs to be serviced or changed. When taking big hits air might be leaking past the seal into the lowers and when that happens there is going to be pressure pushing up on the piston and thus it would not be pushed down. Only other way to lose pressure is thru the top cap and you can spray soapy water on top of the air cap to see if its leaking there. O-ring or valve core replacement then. But I am betting its the air piston seal. Go to our global site and check out the videos to help out. We recommend replacing the entire piston and contact your local shop for the service work. Dan- SR SUNTOUR
  • 1 0
@SRSuntour: Thanks for getting back to me. I thought a worn seal may be the cause, so I ordered a new piston last week. I just wanted to see if it could have been something else. Thanks again.
  • 2 0
Why no dj specific fork? there seems to be a huge market with current offerings from competitors only being top end (fox 831, pike) and being way to expensive for the application. I don't need many adjustments for street / dj. Something like the Argyle RC is great, but the steel stanchions and weight penalty make it out of my interest.
  • 1 0
We use to have one, but sales were slow and the fork was a bit heavier than wanted. There is a market for sure but the overall sales are still relatively small and we decided the investment and time should be directed on other platforms. Business decision in the end and to your point to make inexpensive, strong AND semi light is a difficult thing to do. In product development they say Strong, Light and Hi/Low cost, pick 2.

 Hi Suntour,
The 27.5 Durolux r2c2 in 180mm travel, what is the axle to crown length?
I ride Park DH and general "freeride", I've got a choice of the new 180mm Durolux r2c2, and the RockShox Boxxer Team in 180mm. What benefits does the Durolux have over the Boxxer?
Cheers
SteveCB
  • 3 0
 583mm @ 180 travel

Well that is tough because one is a dual crown (stiffer) and one is a single crown. The R2C2 is going to provide longer service internals and easy to service. The Durolux uses our 20mm QLOC axle system. The Durolux has bleed ports and an integrated fender. Its a bd mo fo fork.

Are worn stanchions after less than one year of use normal? oil in lower legs was changed once and dust seals were lubricated. My LBS said that this is a sign of normal use and that there is nothing wrong???
Can be problem with bushings?
  • 1 0
Depends on what your normal is. Typically the anodization will wear with normal use and does not affect performance more cosmetic. So long as the stanchions are not scratched allowing dirt and other things to get into the lowers, you are good. Bushings and dust seals will be fine. Dan- SR SUNTOUR

auron 2015 user there, i weight about 95kg with all stuff, i cut 11mm of the spacer, got about 90 psi in the fork, this was the only way to prevent bottoming out but now my small bump sensitivity decreased a lot, what spring setup and air chamber setup would you recommend?
  • 1 0
I would put a air volume spacer in the spring side. this will increase the progressiveness of the spring. It will allow you to lower you air pressure to achieve the correct sag and thus will improve the small bump performance. - Mitch Chubey SR SUNTOUR

How to set my suspension? I mean both front and rear..... if I do something on the rear.... does it have any effect to my front or if I do something on the fork, should I compensate something on the rear as well? And how should I fine tuned it perfectly?
  • 1 0
Hello, I have Auron RC2. Weight about 95 kilograms. 80 PSI. Yellow elastomer is completely out of air chamber.
I have problem with range of travel. When is bike in mounting stand, I can measure about 140 mm instead of 160 mm. If I pull down lower legs, I can measure whole 160 mm.
Where is problem? Is negative coil spring too tough?
Thanks

Hi guys. I speak spanish so I try to do not speak like tarzan.

I Already have in my bike an Suntour Epicon XC 27.5 with lockout, rebound and compression.
The ask is: the fork make a noise click when I use it, this is normal?

The distributor already change the cartridge by a new one and the noise don´t desappear.

It's an option for RUX and Durolux for MY2016 and they are available.

emarket.srsuntourna.com

Cheers.

The top Rux already comes with r2c2.
  • 1 0
Yes R2C2 and black stanchions are also available for 2016
  • 3 2
I have a warranty replacement Auron RC2 cartridge and a brand new cartridge that make an extremely loud clicking sound for every slow speed rebound movement, so it's extremely distracting while riding. Instead, I'm riding a cartridge that opened itself on a ride and that I rebuilt. It feels smoother and is quieter than the factory ones. What would explain the clicking sound? Can these factory cartridges be replaced or traded in for PCS-based ones?
  • 2 0
Clicking sound is coming most of the time by the shim sticks on piston. I'm working on it on R2C2 to avoid this sound with a special damper design . There is no click-click noise any more on R2C2
  • 3 0
HI @banzonam -Yes they can be replaced or fully rebuilt at one of our service centers in North America. For the Auron there is no PCS based cartridge at this moment available to the public, we are in testing. Most likely late 2016 and at that time it can be upgraded. Email service@usulcorp.com if you want to discuss getting fully rebuilt

And Yes as Stephane explained R2C2 uses a different rebound piston/shim stack

The old Suntour BMX freewheels from the 70's-80's where excellent. I see White Industries producing a high-end freewheel the last several years. I understand many are moving to cassettes, but has Suntour considered a high-end freewheel for BMX and/or single speed bikes at all?
  • 1 0
@bman33 Don't hold your breath for that one. I do remember how good those old freewheels were and even have one of the removal tools floating around my tool box for old times sake.

Drivetrain projects are focused on cranks only right now.

Darren - SR Suntour
  • 3 2
Why don't you make a high end flagship downhill fork? It would give the company a better image if you made a reliable, high end fork. All the pieces are there! I would gladly pay to try a new competitor to a boxxer world cup or fox 40 float.
  • 5 1
The RUX is not one? Meaning a lighter weight version? The RUX is being raced at the WC level now and its doing very well. If you have not had a chance to ride one I think you would be pleasantly surprised on where the RUX is today.

Dan- SR SUNTOUR
  • 1 1
@SRSuntour: In all honesty, I did in 2013 and was underwhelmed. Who's racing them at a WC level? I follow WC DH pretty closely and haven't seen anyone make it to finals with one.
  • 4 1
@makripper: Voul Voul Racing had some podium time last year with Marine Cabirou also winning World Champ Jr. Her brother Rudy cracked into the top ten at Lourdes his first time racing pro men. Young team but we're stoked on how they've been growing.

  • 1 1
@SRSuntour: bone stock rux forks? I heard of them but didn't know they were on suntour. They both hit the radar last year
  • 1 0
Ps I haven't seen any good reviews of the rux.
  • 1 0
Not sure if this is the type of question Suntour is looking for, but, @SRSUNTOURStephane , I have a Raidon LO R 29er fork, and the lockout stopped working a while ago. I went through the normal ways to fix it (watched the suntour videos on the common problems), but the only thing that worked to turn the lockout again was a longer 4mm hex key. The guys at Suntour North America said they had never seen this issue before.

Any thoughts? Why would the portion of the damper that engages the lockout recede deeper into the cartridge?
  • 2 0
something went too far and the cartridge is most likely not right any longer. It may work for now but not sure it will last. A cartridge replacement might be in your future. Lets us know if we can help any further Dan- SR SUNTOUR
  • 1 0
@SRSuntour: thanks, that's what i figured, but i was hoping there would be a fix. the fork, while 3 years old, hasn't even had 1,000 miles of use Frown is it dangerous to ride on, given that it's a pressurized cartridge?
  • 3 1
It would be nice if Suntour shared some technical data, or dyno data/graphs from their forks/shocks dampers to see the range and profile of adjustability (like cane creek did it in the past for the Double Barrel shock). Bye
  • 3 1
Hey guys, when we would be able to get our hand's on 2016 collection of forks in Europe? For now it is impossible to get one Frown

They have the New Durolux 27.5" and RUX R2C2 in stock in Europe. Go to our global site and find the distributor of your country and contact them. If that does not work, email the following for help on where to get what you are after.

For a company that is well represented in the Philippines (I'd say 70-80% of mountain bikers here use or have used an Epicon/Epixon fork), how come your higher end products are nowhere to be found over here?

I seriously want to buy a Durolux!
  • 1 0
I would like to give you a great reason but it would be based on the Distributor there. Contact them and see if it is possible. If that is not an option you can order one direct from our offices in USA. They are in stock many places. Let us know how we can help.

When will the PCS system be available aftermarket for Auron? Also, when will the new Air volume adjustment system be available aftermarket?
  • 2 0
Late 2016 for an Auron upgrade most likely. For the Auron we have a new rubber puck system that can be installed and those are available now from any service center or talk with your local shop to get them for you. They are 11mm individual spacers Dan- SR SUNTOUR
  • 1 0
With suspension evolving so quick, How do you see the future for Low end OEM spec'd shocks? Do you see Boost, fully adjustable, and air sprung forks trickling down in the near future?
  • 2 0
Sure Boost and 27.5" on the low end and OEM spec, that is where they are headed. Boost we are still not 100% on if its the end all and if its truly needed on all levels, with that said we have boost forks and more in the works.

All of our products are based on QSP- Quick service product, we build maintenance into all that we do, that will never change. most of our products are adjustable as we make many OEM forks in hundreds of configurations.

Air trickling down is there, but there is always the point where cost and the benefits of air meet, as of today Air forks will only go so far down the line.

Dan- SR SUNTOUR
  • 2 1
Why is changing all the shocks to metric better than the current configurations? Doesn't this hurt shops and customers as not there are just more items to stock and harder to move an older shock to a new bike?
  • 1 0
Change is not always welcome and not always best. There is a movement to go to Metric but that is more to move away from calling a size 6.5" x etc..... trying to create a worldwide standard with different sizing options based on how much stuff you can fit inside of the rear shock. The Metric trunion is about being able to fit more and make the rear shocks perform better in a similar sized packaged.

With the success of the Aion, and the Marin SR Suntour Team (Kyle Warner) getting some wins on your Forks; do you see your forks becoming big players against the Big 3? Possibly becoming the Big 4?

I just bought a Haibike full suspension mountain bike with an SR Suntour front fork/shocks. When I push my front fork up and down I get a squeaking sound on the way back up. What can I do about this? Thank you.
  • 2 2
Just bout a Auron RC2. Love the fork. Big step up from the Revelation. First couple rides over jumps seems I am not getting all the travel. Aside from pressure/sag please provide your recommendations to find the best setup of high/low speed and rebound.
  • 3 1
On Auron RC2 on left side (Air) , there is a yellow bumper which manage the progressive air curve. it's too progressive.
May be - you could updated with new spacer rubber. You could tune by take off 3 independent spacer to change the air curve.
High speed compression need to be open in case of you don't reach you travel.
Low speed compression needs to support you when it's stiff.
Rebound (Low speed) on Auron RC2 have to be faster without top noise.
The new R2C2 give oportunity to have faster low speed rebound and keep excellent control & grip on rocky section by High speed rebound.
  • 4 0
Any future plans for ANY type of invert. To add to the SR Suntour brand?
  • 1 0
I'd love to see one as well
  • 1 1
Why? Not being an ass, I just wonder why the recent love of inverts. I know the seals are constantly lubed as the fork cycles, but for this "technical" pro, there's also similar "technical" cons. I'm just wondering what you guys are thinking with pushing for more inverts.
  • 2 1
@trialsracer: because they ride better. until I (sniff) sold it a month ago, people were still impressed by my 12 year old shiver. they just move better, with less stiction, & I prefer better tracking to ultimate stiffness, which is what I had with a USD.
  • 2 1
NO Inverts. do not see the full benefits compared to what you give up. Dan -SR SUNTOUR
  • 2 0
@trialsracer: Cannot speak for all. Myself tho, I like the slightly less handlebar dive ( not starting a pissing match, just voicing a personal preference, PB'ers. Wink )
Also for some reason I can't get past the fact the EVERY other 2 wheeler on the planet uses them and NOT the MTB standard orientation. . There has to be a good reason , no?
PLUS dont forget the WOW factor too the Kids. Who we are trying to get into the sport. Where I live, the little ones see my 2010 Dorados and my buddies Shivers. And they pay attention. Why...MOTO-X is number 1, here. And regular forks are just that...Regular. Well to some at any rate.
So...In the end Its all about NOT being like everyone else. In order to promote the super $$$$$$$$ MTB sport. If you can one-up a Moto-X bike (at least visually), you will get attention to the sport.
  • 2 0
@SRSuntour: Shame...Was looking forward to seeing them on the Canadian Tire bikes, you outfit.
So you see no benefits to having another 1000$ + fork in your line-up. Oh well. Guess with all the low-end bike exposure you get, not much point then?
  • 1 0
SR Suntour seems to have a lot of focus on cavitation for the new model year. Was this realized through testing during races (DH or Enduro?) or purely through laboratory testing?
  • 2 0
it came from riders, we are all riders and we saw/ rode competitors stuff and saw the advantages that reducing cavitation can have for certain conditions and riders who push things faster and farther we can can.

Just wanted to say I have a 2015 durolux and I am so happy with it. Awesome performance, super reliable, excellent product. Keep up the good work.

Thank. Enjoy your ride .. with your Durolux !
  • 1 0
Now that drivetrain companies are making 10-50t rear cassettes, will Suntour be bringing back Microdrive in 11 or 12speed?

I'd like to see a 22t front ring with a 10-28 cassette for low weight, low profile.
  • 2 2
I am riding the Auron RC2 and been struggling a little to find the optimal setting will you recommend how to start ? What is the optimal rebound and HS/LS setting to start ? thanks
  • 2 0
Firstly, the rebound setup is a result of air rate (pressure inflating)
Compression HS/LS :
=> HS - setup by force is coming from ground like a jump.
=> LS - setup by force is coming from rider (Body) , when it's stiff.

Low speed compression have to support your weight and force during a curving or braking very strong. Low speed compression have to keep the suspension on high position.
As quickly as possible you have to recover your travel in order to be ready for the next impact.
  • 1 0
 @SRSUNTOURStephane: I am 90 kilos and run 90 PSI
the Hs seems to have no efect also the rebound. I am also using only 75% of the travel. Shoul I go with lower psi ? or romove the elastomer ? thanks
  • 1 0
@Henry33: Your yellow foam on air side have to be reduce.
Cut it at 20 mm. It will be help you to reach you travel.
  • 1 0
@Henry33: Cut 15mm off the elastomer and then re try. Always get the spring curve right then move on to the damper. We can always get you elastomers if something goes wrong. We now have snap together pucks for air volume adjustment. They just started production 3 months ago.

Once you cut the elastomer I would try 80 psi

Dan- SR SUNTOUR
  • 2 1
hey guys, i have bought your fantastic fork, but i want to know the basic adjustment of the rebound and compression. tks Davide
  • 1 0
Compression is the Dampening that controls the compression of the fork. Compression help the fork from bottoming, but does not control the sag or overall progressiveness of the fork. Rebound is the dampening that controls the return of the fork full stroke. - Mitch Chubey SR SUNTOUR

Suntour has had a bad rep is some places for poor quality and not being up to par with the big suspension makers. How have you guys improved your product and image?
  • 4 0
 @bikerider0985
Year on year the product improvements are getting great recognition and reviews (20145 Pinkbike Awards Best Value Product was the Aion fork).

We also follow that up with constantly improving the back up service. Example for you in Canada is S4 Suspension carries back up parts and forks. Plus there are two locations in USA for service/sales.

The pro riders / teams we have are also a big credit to the improved image of the company both on the competitions side and lifestyle. These riders not only help us develop product but when you see them using it at the highest level it brings confidence it's up to the task.

Will you start to expand your lineup or rear shocks? Perhaps something to with the Rux fork with a higher volume designed for gravity use?

  • 1 2
this has probably already been asked, but i have a 2014 (i think its a 2014) durolux 26" rc2 TA, im wondering if i could give my local distributor (dragon sports in cape town) and order your new R2C2 damper and will it fit?

thanks for the great service thus far, i have spoken to a chris on facebook messenger in the past and always received quick, helpful replies!
  • 2 0
You would need to drill the opening of the lower case to make an R2C2 fit, we do not suggest that. Also the R2C2 is only available at this time for the 27.5" 36mm platform. BUT a retrofittable cartridge is being tested now for the 35mm 26" Durolux platform. Later this year

Dan- SR SUNTOUR
  • 1 0
@SRSuntour: awesome thanks for the reply! I think I will wait until the 35mm cartridge is finished!

  • 3 1
Are you guys serious about switching to metric? If so, why? How will it affect the current standards?
  • 1 0

if yes - this request is coming from our Oem's customer. Metric offer more space inside and give more opportunity to have air curve more progressive.

  • 1 0
Will you be releasing the lowered durolux with slope damper that Mitch&Carson have been riding this past season to the public?
  • 1 0
There are no immediate plans for the internals of the fork they are riding, mainly the negative spring set, but the rest of the fork itself is a stock 26" Durolux lowered to 100 or 120mm. Something someone could do very easily. Just saying

Is it just me or does it seem like they are just copying rock shox? r2c2? and the damper top cap looks alot like a charger...
  • 4 3
What year, if ever, do you expect to introduce electronic damping controls? Automatic or manual adjustment?
  • 3 0
@eastonkooka I believe the first year we did the Axon ELD with electric lockout was 2008. I road it on my XC bike for a while and it was pretty slick not having the friction of a cable to lock out the fork (made a really cool noise too to impress your friends). The drawback was it was heavier than the cable lock out damper so our athletes always chose the lighter option and the project has been on the back burner.

Darren - SR Suntour
  • 2 4
Why does my mtb fork from you have a warning not to jump, free ride, extreme downhill and instructions to use on smooth trails if it is capable of handling all of these things fairly well and if it is a durability problem, why not fix it? Also why does the same fork not return much after a hard hit
  • 1 0
What fork do you have? Sometimes, companies put stuff on there like that on there for liability reasons. Others just state it on their website somewhere, that they aren't responsible for shit going wrong when you do anything "extreme". I.e. if your stanchion folds while you're pedalling outside your house, maybe you have a case. If you are hucking your meat in Virgin, fold the stanchion and bust your teeth out, they aren't paying your medical bills.

That's just a guess.
  • 3 0
Liability, sure people will do what they do but liability and lawyers. And not all understand their own limitations.

What fork do you have? then we can help answer your 2nd part. Maybe it needs some service love?

Why have you stopped producing your highly regarded thumb shifters? Do you have any nos ones kicking around?
  • 2 0
 @speed10
Time moved on and the coveted XC Pro shifters faded away. I loved those things too with my MicroDrive rings and cassette.

There are some cool crankset projects in the works on the drive train side. Stay tuned for some future developments.

many of my friends are switching from 40s to world cup boxxers, from a 'how they ride' perspective, how does the rux compare to the boxxer world cup and given the price point now of a pair of world cups, why go rux?
  • 5 0
RUX R2C2 TT (tool type axle) 26 or 27.5" is $1175 USD MSRP. How does it compare. It will ride in-between the 40 and Boxxer in terms of stiffness as the RUX is 38mm platform. SR SUNTOUR compromises on the side of durability and reliability which means the R2C2 system should allow longer service intervals and is easier to bleed. The chassis is solid and should last a long time. The RUX uses a slick air volume system to help get you dialed. The RUX also uses a coil negative spring which helps provide a supple initial stroke. That help?
  • 2 0
Rux fork on R2C2 version offer the same performance damping than our competitor.
Our great result during last season on WC DH and rampage is a proof
Thus - Why to spend more money ?
SR Suntour's philosophie if to offer you a excellent compromise Price/Performance.

  • 2 0
why should i buy a Rux instead of a Boxxer or a Fox 40?
  • 2 0
Here a answer from Darren already published about your question:

  • 2 0
Depends on how you ride. The RUX is stiffer than Boxxer, not as rigid as a 40. The R2C2 will allow longer service internals and easier to service when needed. The RUX is simple, simple to service, simple to tune and built with reliability and durability for the long haul.

Bleed ports, Air volume adjustment system, simple tool axle option and $1175 USD MSRP for R2C2 version in all black.

How do you change travel in the new Durolux 2016?
  • 1 0
Internally on the air air spring. You can attach travel reducing clips in increments of 10mm. They go between the top out spring and the top of the top of the air piston. The whole process is rather simple and shouldn't take more than 20-30 mins. - Mitch Chubey SR SUNTOUR

Did the Auron RC2 dampers have any type of compensation system? When/will the PCS-style dampers be available for Auron forks?
  • 3 0
@banzonam Currently under testing on the EWS circuit. If all keeps going well on the testing front most likely we will be able to offer it later this year.

We would like to but that requires a new casting (lowers) as the R2C2 uses a larger diameter rebound shaft. It may happen but there is something else that is being worked on with modification to the mold. Castings are not cheap.

why does the raidon fork suck so bad ?! pulled the lowers no fluid...the damper is some sort of c02 cartridge that i destroyed in a matter of 10 miles. Not sure i trust the product under any sort of aggressive riding.

We do not use spells bath oil in any of our forks, part of our QSP philosophy. We feel this leads to more service and cleaning but it can be done faster without oil. Also oil in lowers does very little good unless you hang your bike by the front wheel. Funny those nitrogen filled cartridges are tough, we rarely see failures on those, really. What it means is you need something more suited to your riding and if you blew one of those up, many other products would fail as well. being honest with that. Dan- SR SUNTOUR

What exactly is cavitation and what steps have you taken to prevent it?
  • 1 0
When air and oil can mix inside the cartridge. The air then gets all into the system and can causes inconsistencies of the damping. Think about taking a jar with a lid, fill it with water, then put the cap on, shake it and air bubbles mix and make it foamy, the water in the jar then moves and flows different. Inside a cartridge same thing. when you get air out, oil can flow smoother.

We created the PCS system, this allows the oil to move (Displacement) without air getting into it.

Do you offer a trade in program? Like if I have a broken durolux could I send that In for a discount on a new durolux? If you do what are some of the limitations?
  • 1 0
We have an upgrade program if you want to go from a say an XCT or XCM to an air fork, but nothing for a broken fork unless its a warranty issue. you can email service@ usulcorp.com with details and maybe there is something that can be done.

 Hey.

We do have a upgrade program and all of the guidelines are right up on SR SUNTOUR's North American website.

You would certainly qualify for your Durolux.

In fact, just last week we started offering this upgrade pathway to all other fork brands as well.

Cheers,

SR SUNTOUR

Did you have any input into the Ohlins RXF 34 fork at all? Similar to Canecreek & Ohlins relationship.

 Nope. Dan- SR SUNTOUR

I have thought for awhile that I would buy a suntour fork. When you successfully show your products are just as good or better then the rest will you keep on with the super competitive prices?
Hope so!
  • 1 0
As good or better is relative to what you are after and how you ride. Do not want to say that we have had to up our game and with the PCS and R2C2 we have moved in the right direction. The performance is on par with others but we as a company still make decisions with simplicity (QSP) in mind and sometimes that directions has us making compromises that all might not agree with. But I will say that as of today the new stuff will allow you to go as fast with similar control and comfort as others. AND we are doing it competitively pricing wise.

Will you make a 29er version of the durolux with the R2C2 damper?
  • 1 0
Not at this time. There are plans for a longer travel 29" but not in the 36mm platform, a little lighter and maybe not with the R2C2 but with PCS and ..... Coming in 2017

We offer the Rux in both 26 and 27.5, with he new R2C2 cartridge.

Why didnt you put a bid in for marzocchi?
  • 3 0
We used to make their stuff and still work with many of the departed. No need, we have a plan and we think a good one, but to some that may be debatable. Dan- SR SUNTOUR
