New Syncros Stem And 39" Bar - Interbike 2010

Sep 23, 2010
by Mike Levy
Syncros has been working on some exciting new products for 2011, including a brand new and very unique stem that resembles nothing you may have seen before. If that wasn't enough, Syncros is also pushing boundaries in the handlebar market by debuting a 39" wide bar! Inside you can see all the photos and info, as well as listen to audio about the new products.

And here I thought that you couldn't possibly reinvent the mountain bike stem... The Syncros FRIC stem is certainly a departure from the norm and can brag about being both impressively light and sporting some unique features. Firstly, this curvy unit is actually forged (although not in the fires of hell), not CNC'd as you might have first guessed. While the fine gentlemen at Syncros were not about to share how the shape comes to life via the forging, it is unusual to see a piece as shapely as the FRIC use this process for manufacturing. I'm not about to go on a big spiel as to why forging can create stronger parts, that is for you to look up, but it is a common method of producing a light and strong final product. The stem's FRIC name is an acronym for FreeRide Intelligent Clamp and refers to the faceplate bar clamp that runs a full 260 degrees around the handlebar. While the forging process contributes to the stem's light 124 gram weight, the extra bar clamp grip area also plays a part in allowing for a lighter weight due to not as much material being needed. Although mega light, the FRIC is designed for full on heavy duty use as the name suggests. After being shown the stem I immediately assumed that your handlebar controls would have to be removed from one side during the installation, but this isn't the case. The 260 degree clamp leaves enough room for you to fit the tapered part of your bar through, not the 31.8 clamping area. Listen to the audio below to learn more!

Something missing from this picture? Moving the steerer tube clamping bolts inboard isn't an entirely new concept, but it certainly finishes off the FRIC stem nicely. Not to mention that it will save your knees if you slip a pedal. The unique looking FRIC stem does require a specific bolt tightening method during installation, listen to the audio to hear the process. Expect to see the FRIC in your local shop this December. One length only, 45 mm, but you can pick from two color options, the white shown here or a black model with a black chrome faceplate.

It is about time someone came out with a 39" (that is 1000 mm!) wide bar. Yes, 39 inches. It makes so much sense that it surprises me that it took this long, but leave it to Syncros to push the limits and make shit happen. Just for anyone keeping tabs, this is the widest bar at Interbike, I personally measured each one to be sure. Listen to the audio to get the full scoop on the FR1000 handlebar!

Visit the Syncros website to see their entire lineup of goodies... but you won't find the FR1000 bar!

Syncros has been working hard to bring you some new shiny bike bits for 2011. The stem is very cool and the 39" wide bar should be popular with the a lot of shredders. Share your thoughts on the new FRIC stem and 39" wide faux bar below! Just remember to read the article and listen to the audio before commenting!

Stay tuned for more Interbike coverage!

I think I run 767 mm and thats already wider than anybody I know...

I notice the width being very helpful sometimes but on the singletracks when you have to weave through trees...it could be your downfall. And whats the benefit of such a long handlebar? I've noticed turning feels more comfortable. What else?

Think of all the trend whores that bard up beffor geting there tiny mechanical hearts smashed!

one day 39 will seem like a short bar, theres no limit with these hipsters.
but beside being hip i personally love a wider bar, (for DH at least) its way more stable at high speeds and really helps crank through corners.
  • 12 1
Hahahahahaha! So many flat-stem, low-rise, high seat "DH" riders are gonna cry when they hear that audio!!
  • 9 0
the hells angels are guna want some of those bars for there harley's
  • 3 0
I'm riding with a 777 bar, and it's perfect. Could probably been a little longer too. And I'm a short guy at 170cm.
  • 5 0
those bar aren't meant for asian, inclusive me . 777 max LOL .. hahahah a Big Grin
  • 17 0
 Deff a black mans bar!
  • 2 0
those bars make my new blackspire 808s look tiny
  • 5 2
Anyone else thinking how are you gonna get your (regular sized) bars into that stem? Unless you slide the stem along the length of the bar, in which case, wouldn't it get stuck if you had high-rise bars?

Or is the stem is a 'joke' too?
  • 1 0
It looks like in the part of the stem you can take off, the part of your handlebar where your grips etc. are (22,2mm), will fit. So it's only the little part with the rise that you have to slide in. nd no, it won't get stuck, kinda hard to explain why, but you would've understood why if you get to try it IRL.

But who rides with high rise bars for DH/FR these days anyway?

too big! i find 800 just a bit too wide, 750 is comfortable, but 1000mm, well thats just silly
  • 4 1
 i still want one.
  • 1 0
ok it was a good prank but are any companies in the future gonna make a bar that big?
  • 1 0
hahaha! if you still want a bar this long you're just gonna have to keep dreaming man cuz were not serious here.. Come on! Awesome XD
  • 1 0
when the audio says "keep dreaming we're not serious here" does he mean that the bar is a joke? if it is.. thanks for keeping my hopes up. i would really love to try it out.
  • 1 0
what else could it mean... lol
  • 2 0
 haha idk. im dumb.
  • 1 0
those 1000mm may suit 6'6"+ people .. hence, this 1000mm bar may mean something to them LOL ;D
  • 1 0
yea. ill agree with that now. im happy with my race face atlas 785mm bar so far.
  • 1 2
39" WTF! Why would you want that wide? Look at his arms in the pick! They go out any farther and he won't even be able to steer the damn bike! Rolleyes
  • 1 0
a like 9000mm bar could work for people like josh bender that are looking for extreme stablility and to only turn a few inches seroulsly syncros might be on to someting alot of people are commenting saying it wouldhave been cool now when syncros reads it there gonna be like FUCK!!! then make on next year maybe not 1000mm though
  • 1 0
 way to wide for me
  • 4 1
that stem will be a pain in the ass when you wanna remove the stem/twist the stem for packing the bike in a box/car. if you have to undo the bar clamp bolts first too. cool concept though
  • 5 0
 Lame...I was stoked. hahaha
  • 1 0
If ya can barspin 28 inch bars on a 20.25 inch frame, theoritically you could cut it down to 34 inches on large size killswitch... DO IT[YT=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ra70O9nps6E]
  • 2 1
sure wide bars give you "better" cornering but there is a issue with having most of you weight over thebars....so if you are going down a steep section you cannot lean back cause your arms are so extended out you have not way of shifting your weight behind your seat.....sure its the new "fad/thing"to have wide bars but there is a max that you can really go before it gets out of hand and just plain out of control
  • 1 0
Not everyone has the luxury of audio at work. Please put all the info in print too, or you will always get people commenting who don't have all of the details. I actually read through the comments, because usually someone has already said what I would have.
  • 1 0
its a joke, theyre not making them. but still if they did wayyy too wide.... ud get snagged on every tree you pass. anyone with bars this wide would just end up cutting them down
  • 3 2
...don't you think its getting a little too long? (dont say that's what she said please) oh nevermind they aren't serious hahahahaha good one..
  • 23 1

 Facepalm

They're out of their mind.

Wake up,if the 800 mm bar are already to wide for most people, why launch a 1000mm bar?

  • 1 0
haha, that's great, soon the bikes become wider than longer...
Hold on a moment! - April only in half a year time Smile
  • 1 0
+ low the weight of that new stem is surely to do with well thought shaping, not because of the different clamp design - you still use 4x clamp bolts and the material to wrap around the bars.
  • 2 0
 thats a B-E-A-utiful stem
  • 2 0
sounds like a good idea until you want to ride through some trees.
  • 1 2
why wouldnt they launch them? if your going to go through the trouble of designing them and all that. and there is probably a fair amount of people who would actually buy them anyways
  • 1 0

  • 1 0
