GET LOST IN THE MOMENT
bigquotesThere comes a time in all our lives when we must let go of all the chaos and clutter of the modern world and tune our minds to a simpler idea... to see into that empty space just a few feet in front of us and see nothing else... to see the path ahead as a story yet to be written. Entire days of our lives can pass by without meaning, yet within these moments of absolute clarity there's an entire lifetime worth remembering. It's simply a matter of letting the rest of the world melt away...

Produced for unReal, Brandon Semenuk's “Get Lost in the Moment” segment, is the first mountain bike film segment to be filmed in one continuous shot. This uninterrupted shot was filmed by the most advanced gyro-stabilized camera system in the world, the GSS C520, mounted to a truck on a custom road built next to a custom trail that took three weeks to build. This true cinematic achievement required perfect coordination between Semenuk, Anthill Films, and TGR with regard to athleticism, planning, timing and logistics. Injured at the time, Semenuk only hit the full line once.

unReal is for those of us who escape. A film that celebrates breaking free from the confines of reality and venturing into a boundless world. This place isn’t remote or hard to find, and yet many never see it. Here, glacial walls transform into mountain bike trails, rain and snow aren’t the only elements to fall from the sky and thousand pound mammals become riding partners. Breathtaking visuals conjure feelings of awe and pure joy; feelings that only those of us who venture outside can truly understand. This film is dedicated to you — the dreamers, the rule-breakers, the ones who never grow up, the ones who know the secret — the ones who know the way into the unReal world.

Riders: Brandon Semenuk, Brett Rheeder, Cam McCaul, Graham Agassiz, Steve Smith, Tom van Steenbergen and Thomas Vanderham, with Brook Macdonald Finn Iles, Ian Morrison, James Doerfling, Matty Miles and friends

Sony presents unReal with Shimano & Trek, a new film produced by Teton Gravity Research & Anthill Films starring Brandon Semenuk, Brett Rheeder, Cam McCaul, Graham Agassiz, Steve Smith, Tom van Steenbergen & Thomas Vanderham, with Brook Macdonald, Finn Iles, Ian Morrison, James Doerfling & Matty Miles. Written, directed and edited by Anthill Films. Art direction and additional writing by Good Fortune Collective. Additional support from Bike Magazine, Evoc, Knolly, Pinkbike, Rocky Mountain, Western Digital & Whistler Mountain Bike Park.

@chyu Si it must have been shot like 10 years ago because hills from winXP background image have been turned into vineyard. On the other hand, this indisputably proves session is an original bike and all the others copied its look!

I clicked the link and then scrolled to the comments ( as usual ) and read the top comment, "Yeah whatever mate, pft"........Seriously I am sorry you are dead right. Literally the single greatest video segments of all time.( About MTB anyway)

Totally agree - going into the movie I was most excited for Steve Smith's segment and least enthused for this one; after watching it all my opinion completely flipped.

Everything about the segment is perfect; the riding, the trail building, the filming, editing, etc, etc. Awesome job to all those involved.
  • 3 0
I agree 100%. I would like everyone I know who doesn't ride bikes to see this clip, maybe then they will have some insight into why riding bikes is one of the biggest joys in my life and will continue to do so until the day I die.

It's like mtb version of Birdman film.
  • 5 3
@scottsecco Firstly, this is so damn epic! everything just works so flawlessly, the terrain, riding, all the shots, aaaah everything! Secondly - You, and everyone involved should have a beer or ten to congratulate yourselves on this! and finally, through which media can I purchase this movie so that you get the most money directly for this! I'd much rather give you 100% of the funds to keep making these damn movies!
  • 5 0
Just enough slo mo to show how composed and smooth Semenuk is. I think one take segments are true artistry, like photos without post. The switching bike things reminds of NWDX, which is the first movie I can remember Semenuk in. Great segment
  • 14 0
"He was injured at the time so he only hit the full line once" That just proves the level of talent and composure Semenuk has. Bravo to all those involved.
  • 3 1
hope semenuk is as happy with that segment as we are. buffalo springfield tune is perfect.

Thanks @redd0gg but I had literally nothing to do with unReal. All credit goes to @anthill, Semenuk, Kyle Jameson, and the rest of their crew.

Yep, for a few years the trail builder section on strength in numbers, where Aggy rides Gnarcroft was my fav, but after watching this a few times, I have a new fav. You've outdone yourselves. Outstanding work @anthill and co!

P.S. @scottsecco great to see the word literally being used correctly!

Sickest segment. My in-laws have a ranch literally 5 miles away (there may or may not be trails on it).You can see this line in the distance from a look out on hwy 46 west (hint as to where it is).
I have always mind ridden the ridges out there and when i saw this vid i couldn't believe it.

The stress for both brandon and the camera operator would be insane. The final product though, will be hard to beat
  • 31 0
I disagree,he seems stressed and uncomfortable at crankworks, and other FMB events.I would rather watch him riding in these segments.this is more his style, cool ,calm and collected.comps not so much.nice job Brandon.

@rideonjon : I know, right? More often than not, Semenuk seems like he's really annoyed and unhappy. I mean, don't get me wrong, I can understand that he's under a lot of pressure (not riding in the FMB tour and not shooting heli segments myself, but you know what I mean), but he even seems unhappy when there's no apparent reason for it... He did smile in the past, at least that's the way I like to remember it. Anyone knows what's up with that? Or is it just a really bad case of bitchy-resting-face-syndrome? And apart from all that: that segment is just plain beautiful, love it!
  • 1 0
 @LaserEule Please read this:
theridechannel.com/features/2015/05/rodney-mullen-tony-hawk-interview
For me it is totally apearend that all these top guys will sooner or later fall into the same trap as the legends Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen.
I hope for Brandon that sooner or later he will also take the step away from contests and just continue to do this awesome movie segments... Big Grin
  • 2 0
i think @nickt might have been referring to the fact that that segment was filmed in one take. I would imagine that both Brandon and the camera operator were nervous to not stuff up and have to reset the shot.
  • 20 0
Its rare to be blown away in todays level of mtb.
  • 14 1
I got the movie on iTunes and the rest of the movie is right up there with this one. It's a really impressive movie visually, and the riding is just sick. Spend the money and give Anthill/TGR some love because it's very well deserved here.

  • 1 0
Agreed. Next time it's feature length or no deal. Smile

Looks like well-edited cuts at 01:51 & 02:20 to me. Feel free to prove me wrong. Who wrote the "first mountain bike film segment to be filmed in one continuous shot" text above?

Nice riding, filming & editing though. I like it.
  • 5 0
I only would add some bike noise. To me I hate when you completely miss the sound of the wheels digging the ground for a bandmusic...
  • 13 0

  • 7 0
I just want to say congrats to Anthill.... I remember watching the extras on Seasons when they said they wanted to get longer tracking shots rather than a load of quick cuts.... well this is the holy grail then surely? The one shot seggy. You guys feckin slayed this one.
  • 10 1
Videos like this should not be allowed on Pinkbike.... They cause severe depression!
  • 6 0
When Buffalo Springfield kicked in, I thought "that is classic".

When he switched up rides and dropped the cliff, I thought "that was unexpected".

When he landed in the last dirt patch, I thought "that is the best bike seg ever made".

Was bored and bought Unreal on "opening night" not expecting much more than a better-than-average mtb film. Changed my mind about 10 seconds into this segment. Mind blown, get the film - it's worth supporting this level of filmmaking.
  • 5 0
The Copa Cabana Shot of the MTB world, well done boys, must have been a hell of a lot of planning, building, coordination, and execution. Semenuk continues to amaze, 1 shot at the full line with an injury and nails it, talk about unReal, damn.
  • 1 0
He was injured during that shot?
  • 1 0
His wrist seems to be bandaged when leaving the car.
  • 6 1
Anyone know where they shot this? Also, if Brando was injured at the time and only hit it once, imagine th bangers he would've pulled out with a clean bill of helath and a couple full practise runs.
  • 2 0
Not 100% sure, except Cali (license plates and highway sign)
I'd guess in the NorCal foothills near the coast.
  • 3 0
nowhere near Northern California. Too far south. I know the spot. They got torn down. This is on a private ranch.
  • 1 0
 What town?
  • 1 0
doesn't matter. there is a small network of trails local to the town with some dirt jumps in the woods that cross through private property but none of it is like this.
  • 2 0
The cut-off, as the rest of the for knows it, for northern and southern California is Monterey County. No one really says "Mid-Cal." Point being, this is the neighboring county of Monterey County so it is very close to what is considered Northern California. Like Ehigh said, these are on a private ranch, likely with no legal public access. There are legal trails near it in Cambria, Ca. Go check out Hearst Castle and then hit up some scenery on your ride!
  • 1 0
Thanks amadrirdj, I wasn't at interested in riding the trail. It's out of my league and I already assumed it was flattened.. The area just intrigued me with the rolling hills being so near the ocean. I couldn't quite figure wear in Cali that was.
  • 5 0
Was that chainless? I had to watch it again. Nope he pedals only twice on the entire line. Surreal soundtrack. f*ckin rad vid! Thanks again Brandon
  • 3 0
I grew up in the town of Cambria, CA (the small town you can see in the distance in some of the shots) and I knew this site looked familiar. Can confirm that this is off of Highway 46 West between the towns of Cambria and Paso Robles. It's on private property though. I found the starting spot on Google Maps after looking at numerous camera angles and landmarks (like the fence lines and telephone poles):

Don't normally shell out for movies full price when they come out.. Usually wait for discounts.. Only one or two have ever got me paying full whack.. This segment just convinced me to add another to that list. Awesome. Just awesome.
  • 2 0
Dont know what to say. Just swapping bikes mid run and that music and that trail. I honestly got emotional watching that. Semunuk is stunning to watch. After watching filming like that its hard to imagine how that will be bettered. Can it get better than that?
Well done.
  • 3 1
Is the final cut of the film different than what was at the premiere, or just this clip?

At the premiere the continuous shot begins with Brendan driving up the entirety of that road. As you watch it for the first time, you're wondering what's going on; why are we spending so much time on this drive, what are we building up to, why isn't it cutting to his ride? It was awesome.
  • 2 0
I think it's probably the same but they just cut that bit out in this so the online video is more to the point. I agree, watching the drive was cool! This was my favorite segment at the premiere, absolutely awe inspiring

Watching this and just hoping it would never end...
  • 1 0
I bet the this made him a very happy man, what an amazing run! He normally looks so miserable in a contest environment, if he can produce video like this why bother with the risk of competition. It would be interesting to know how many takes this took. The music choice was inspired, who would have thought such amazing music could come from such a bloody pointless conflict.
  • 5 1
The last part of the first paragraph (not including the quote) says he only hit the full thing once due to injury, so one take! I can imagine he didn't practice each part that many times either, so as not to put too much strain on himself
  • 2 0
nicksp894 Ha thanks pal, I was in a rush to get out and get my bars cut down so didn't bother reading any of the blurb. You saved me the hassle...thank you.
  • 3 1
The build, the riding, and the incredible filming are in a new class. I could have done without the music, but that's more of a personal problem, really. All in all, this is one of the best things I've ever seen.
  • 1 0
Pretty cool of you to put this up for all to check out. Gives a little bit of a feel for everyone what the flick is like. The whole surreal vibe is so strong there. People saying how it "looked fake". Honestly, the way Sem's just floating through it all, so casual seeming, yeah it's like in your dreams kinda shit. I've had dreams like this. Sem' lives it.

I'm not big on the bike switch (my policy is one bike for everything but that's me), it's the 4 minute continuous à la Tony Jaa in The Protector that's just super cool with Sem' steezin' it all the way down. Never been done before & like I said, it totally nails that surreal, "unReal" feel.
  • 1 0

  • 2 3
That was sooo sick. Semenuk is God. But why they had to slow it down is beyond me...
  • 17 1
Thanks! There is no slow motion. It was very important to Brandon that the entire shot be shown in real time.
  • 2 0
That is impressive and really, really, really well done! The scale of the jumps must look smaller because the aerial viewpoint and the beautiful, enormous backdrop of ravines and hills. Looking at the stills in the article gives better scope to the size of a lot of the features.

 No Slow-mo?
If you compare the size of the bike with the gap between the jumps you will see that nearly 80% of the section was shot slower than 100%.
He rotates too slow for those jumps (take the footplant 360 for example).
  • 2 0
What relevance does the size of the bike have to do with whether or not it is slowed down? I'm pretty sure when the folks who made the film reply saying it was shot in real time, it means it was shot in real time..
  • 1 4
So you are one of those guys who believe in everything thats mentioned in a commercial.
When a dude on a bike rides a log-jump and it is filmed in a 90* angle to the spot you have a pretty good reference to see how big the gap is.
  • 1 1
Love the bike switch. Nwd9 style
  • 1 2
Yeah that's what I thought, a rip off of that, with less of a point. :/
