The Townsite

The Townsite

The history of hardship, determination and tragedy could be seen everywhere we looked, more so it could be felt. Everywhere we stepped, oozing from the rocks like the remnants of the precious metal veins.
The strength of character, mind and body required to bore and chip away at the earth, freeing its minerals, is immense. To do this work at the turn of the century is all but unfathomable for our internet-bred generation to even conceptualize. More then 100 years later, a parallel can be drawn with Big Mountain freeriding. The strength of character, mind, and body required to be at the top of this part of the sport is immense, unknown to mere mortals, Buehler however embodies this description to the letter.

The Mine

bigquotesI loved this shoot, the whole mission was a daily push, but the rewards were always worthwhile, I always love checking out new areas and seeing what the potential is, and all though this spot was a bit more rugged then many I've been to, I'm stoked on how things turned out!

Garett Buehler

The Mine

bigquotesFirst time I ever saw The Townsite was in a photo a friend had taken after riding her moto up there; I knew right away that it would make a great zone for a edit, all we needed next was a rider.

Taylor Loughran, Art Barn director/cinematographer

The Mine

bigquotesKnowing Garett since he was 15 or so, I have always had tremendous respect for him as a rider and have watched him tackle huge move and lines with ease. When Matt and I set out to scout and build him some features in this zone we didn't hold back. Both Matt and myself are fairly confident on the bikes, so our building principle was simple. If we thought there was even the smallest possibility that we could hit the feature, we made it bigger... this quickly got out of hand.

bigquotesAccess was like playing Russian Roulette - between the gates, huge mining trucks and pinned Polaris RZR missions you never knew what you would get. Perfect for such a rowdy zone.

bigquotesYou could say that Matt and I took some 'liberties' with the lines we scouted for Garett. We searched for the gnarliest lines we could find. It was easy for us, raking and moving a few rocks was way safer then riding. Garett just showed up from Nelson and sent everything.

bigquotesKevin Landry is probably the best location scout and stunt builder in the corridor. Garett Buehler is straight up balls out nuts. Put the two together and this is what you get.

bigquotesThis zone blew my mind and I couldn't believe it was here, tucked away relatively close to home. Looks like a combo of Moab + Virgin, Utah. Can't get a bad shot there really.

Pat Henry, drone operator

The Mine

bigquotesI remember feeling pretty small the first time I arrived to scout the zone. It definitely had eerie vibes, the mountains seemed to be alive. The terrain however had crazy potential. I felt like I was always looking over my shoulder whilst building, the nature of the zone and the access combined with natural activity in the basin made for exciting times.

Some of the best and most spectacular photos I have ever seen here, incredible. Props to Buehler, he's a true freerider who just simply do it, with passion.

That is a very impressive beard, man in photo 3.

True mountain man, I expect they found him up there living off grid and he turned out to be an exceptional photo/videographer!

 Great pictures and great article!
Is it just my resolution of the screen/display, or are the pictures quite pixelated?!
Some of them look like an old SuperMario game to me.
Even the logo of Margus is anything but sharp.
What a pity regarding these high quality photographs.

same... in a lower resolution they are banger
  • 3 0
The last video is a little choppy too.

Amazing..........it must have taken him ages to grow a beard like that.

Amazing photos, but this new Pinkbike format isn't doing them justice unless they are uploaded in the highest resolution possible! My monitor spans 1920 pixels wide, and that's before the fancy HTML5 zoom in feature. Take note @pinkbike !

That gap photo.... how is it possible to stack those massive trees on that terrain? Awesome photos. I've never seen anything like this before

Thinking same thing. Short of a helicopter dropping them they must have had some strong dudes building, LOL.
  • 2 1
I don't know where they are but it probably is in the Okanagan somewhere and at the site of an old mine so those logs were an old rail bridge of some sort built in the early 40/50's my guess
  • 5 0
yes old rail bridge.. you guys know that we have had cranes for roughly 2500 years now

Photos are showing up huge, and pixelated, like they've been over-enlarged they even don't fit on my 24" monitor, anybody know what setting I have set wrong?

4th pic from the top - am I the only one who finds it a bit sketchy, that they used a large steel pipe in the landing?
But then again, it´s Buehler The Beast, and I guess he can stomp a landing everywhere! :-D
  • 4 0
That's the only thing that you find a bit sketchy in all of this?
  • 2 0
I'ts got an elbow on the end, so it's all good!
  • 4 1
Great stuuf! Shame it was wasted by the low resolution of the pictures. Such a work shouldn't have a chance to look like a video games of the 80's!
  • 3 1
Maybe they fixed something since you posted this, because the pix look great on my screen.
  • 1 0
 nope

When you nail everything in an edit, get every single piece of it right, you might get the video above. Of course you might also get something like Kali's latest Duff edit. Just another right answer to the same question.

Man that guy does not suck

Some PODs here, few PODs there......

Props to the guy/gal behind the camera. Now I need to view this post on a tv.. but probably shouldnt, I'm envious enough looking at it on an 11inch.

A few of those shots it's like: where the hell is he going to land?!

Great Photos! Free Riding at its best. I Seriously lack the testicular fortitude to ride like that. Mad Pros Gents!

 Holy...Fuck....
  • 5 0
 hahahahah Use your words.
  • 4 2
So you guys have enough PODs to last a few weeks, ok?
  • 2 1
I was up in this zone a couple weeks ago on my moto, these lines are crazy steep.nice job Buehler
