Season 1 and 2 were my favs. Riding COP back when they had the top DJs and Panty WasteSmile This show got me so pumped to go biking back in school, probably responsible for taking my interest in biking and turning it into a full blown addiction! How I would love to have spent a season on the bus riding and hanging out... I think the fact that this was broadcast on Sportsnet had a big impact on the amount of kids from my generation that began to really get into biking.

Hats off to the Drop In crew and all those who brought this show to cable tv!

Being in Ontario (like many here at the time) I was a half roadie half XC rider, until I saw the first episode. These guys basically changed the direction of my biking for life. I owe these guys the videos a lot for helping me learn new stuff and try things nobody here in my area was about at the time. Picnic table jumps, street riding, just big bike nonsense, so much fun. It was definitely the best way to get from my house to the skate park. Eventually the skateboard stayed home and it was just biking for a while, but man what a great time these guys had.

Are there still trails like this? as in, with that much woodwork, skinnies 5 meters up in the air and so on? from what i tend to see from today's popular vids is that trails tend to be mostly flowy stuff allbeit with some gaps and drops.

(btw, not judging anyone or anything, just asking Smile )
  • 2 0
not really... there are some folks still building skinnies, but it really went out of favor for the most part. i love flowy stuff as much as the next guy, but i gotta say there was something special about cleaning a tech skinny line. i think there's room for both, and it's interesting how almost no one builds skinnies anymore. might have something to do with liability around often-sketchy woodwork (e.g. my local trails don't allow woodwork of any kind but we can dig big jumps all we want).
  • 1 0
Oh Yes there are! Skinnies have not died, they've just retreated to remote corners of the northwest corner of the continent. I know some people that build so gnarly ass skinny woodwork.
  • 1 0
Skinnies are still great for slowing you down and giving you more riding time out of your grueling ascent. But people could care less for skinnies where there is a chair lift, and prefer fast flow fun. Sometimes they are still needed just to get you from point A to B (the reason they started on the North Shore). And the reason they are "still there" today.

You're mistaken if you think they are only in the northwest corner of the continent. There are many here in CT and we are far from the northwest! I have personally hit many a skinny drop. I've also seen skinnies that would make 90% percent of riders need new underwear! That is not even mentioning the plethora of skinnies that xc guys put in all over the place!

This summarizes my college days around Boston. Marzocchi bomber dirt jump fork, Planet X frame, big BMX saddle, super long geometry.......crank flips, pedal grinds, 180s, oh man.....so much for my day at work.

There is one situation in DropInTv that I won't forget. The funniest of all. There was a visiting rider, joining the bus for some time and he rode a hardtail with hydraulic rim brake in the rear. He knew how to jump some street tricks and he was crazy. There was this time when they visited some laundry or launderette and there was this huge washing machine, when this guy came inside it. Then they turned it on and the dude was turning cirles with his hand only visible in this round window of the washing machine. I remember watching this on tely and laughing so much that I end up lying on a floor and making high pitch noises. I tried to search for a clip with the situation only, but I guess there isn't one.
