Episode 2 of the 4-part #TrailLove series comes from the Grand Valley of Colorado. This region, found on Colorado's western slopes, is an arid and rugged high desert, with beautiful flat top mesas and red rock formations; and features some of the world's most heralded mountain bike destinations. While the region is exploding with more and more trails, and exciting opportunities including lift-served downhill atop the Grand Mesa overlooking the valley, it is Grand Junction and Fruita that serve as the area's premier trail destinations. Despite only a dozen miles separating their respective city centers, the two towns offer vastly different riding opportunities, with Grand Junction's Lunch Loops providing an abundance of rocky and technical options, and Fruita's 18 Road area offering ridgelines and flow for miles and miles. Adam Snyder, Brice Shirbach and Derek Bissett had a blast exploring the two areas in spite of some early season inclement weather and untimely injuries, and soaked in as much of the Grand Valley mountain bike culture and history as they could.

The BMC Trailcrew follow each other down a Fruita classic, known as "Joe's Ridge". Moon dust be damned.

Derek Bissett was on fire all week leading up to his separated shoulder. The Ohio native sacrificed a lot for this project, and was keen to be a part of it even when riding wasn't an option.

The Trailcrew experienced a bevy of weather conditions throughout their week in western Colorado, including several days of high winds, thunderstorms and below average temps. That meant that when it was go time, it was go time. Just ask Adam Snyder.

Free Lunch was a favourite among the Trailcrew in Grand Junction, with high speed technical sections, jumps, drops and plenty of rocks.

By the week's end, Brice would amass a nice collection of ailments including a broken toe, a torn calf muscle, a bruised knee cap and a hole in his palm. When you pick a fight with rocks, the rocks will always win.

Time has done some wonderful things to the Valley, and much of it is fair game for riders.

There are line choices aplenty throughout the Lunch Loops in Grand Junction. Derek usually prefers the most direct route from Point A to Point B.

The Book Cliffs offer up an astonishing backdrop to the north of the Grand Valley. You often need to remind yourself to keep your eyes on the trail with scenery like this, as the trail will often disappear from beneath you without much notice.

Adam Snyder is one of the country's best bike handlers, and had a blast two wheel-drifting the thick layer of high desert dust found throughout Fruita's 18 Road area.

I couldn't recommend riding here enough, after having spent a summer working in Palisade on a fruit farm. Riding is like the very very best bit of a Peak District (UK) bike ride over and over and over again for miles. Every twist and corner you pretty much have to be on it, it's brilliant. Screwing up has slightly higher consequences than most other places I've ridden as the trails tend to be stupidly and most excellently rocky, and flanked by car sized rocks and cacti. Or massive cliffs (Palisade Rim - flippin' amazing - thanks COPMOBA!) The ridiculous thing is if you stay in Palisade, or Grand Junction you have the trails like the ones in the video all within 45 minutes of each other. And you can drive up a big old hill that overlooks the valley called the Grand Mesa to go and ride in Alpine meadows and stuff. (because it's NINE THOUSAND feet higher)) And if the weather doesn't look good (and the dirt there is completely unrideable when wet as in you'll destroy the trail and your bike) Moab is less than a 2 hour drive away. Oh and you can also drive to Aspen (2 hours) and do uplifts at Snowmass. And it's only 250ish miles from Denver airport down a massive motorway so pretty easy to get to. Don't be put off by how small Palisade is, it's cool, got everything you need and Rapid Creek is a great bike shop.

I just got back from a 2-week Utah and Colorado riding trip with friends and I have to say I'm jealous of all the great trails you guys have out there. I love the East Coast but I have a feeling I'm going to be flying out there with my bike a lot more often. The mountains, the trails, the people...... All in all it was the best riding I have ever done and I met some great people along the way.

Must suck living there...I feel your pain! In case you want to leave, we can trade houses. You'll be very impressed with my house in beautiful flat Texas. You can see for 50 miles, if you stand on a tuna can you can see for 100. You will be amazed at all the Bro-Dozers while driving around the city streets. And mostly you will be blown away by the wonderfully steamy hot humid summertime. Oh and not to forget high property taxes with zero public lands for off road recreation. This can be exciting however riding your dirt bike on private property while being shot at by some pissed off land owner. PM me...I'll be waiting...

 Sounds like you should move.

Thank you for not calling Grand Junction "Fruita"

Sweet lookin trails. It's pretty hard to justify travelling very far for riding when you live in Squamish, but I'd like to check this zone out for sure.
  • 7 0
Haha, I'm sure Squamish will still be there when you get back!

Hey @paulwatt...I'm thinking Squamish might be rad for next year's edition of #TrailLove...thoughts?
  • 1 0
@paulwatt the beauty of the western slope is you can ride it almost year round. I've met a lot of Canadians in this area in March when it's too wet/snowy to ride BC. Spring and fall are ideal as it is smokin' hot in the summer.

Yeah, Brice. It would be pretty easy to do the #Traillove here. Although we already get tons of exposure. Pemberton would be pretty sweet too.
Ryan - some fall I'll make it there somehow!

"a broken toe, a torn calf muscle, a bruised knee cap and a hole in his palm."
Yikes.
Should have been wearing gloves and knee pads...oh, never mind. (bruised v. broken I guess)

Looks like the rocks are bigger there than the Brandywine.

Brice, it was great to meet you and the guys, we hope you come back to hang out and ride again. Thanks for being so damn cool.

You will never know how important saddle time is until you are injured and can not ride the bike.

This is really cool - great to see a community making a big investment in biking. Wish MT got on the bandwagon...
