Transition Bikes Announce Scout Carbon

Jul 26, 2016

Transition PR

The Scout has been one of our more overlooked bikes in our line. People are now just starting to catch on to how fun and capable this little bike is and now it's available in carbon. Touting all the great features and geometry of the aluminum Scout with a large reduction in weight and no compromise in strength. The carbon front triangle, seatstays and chainstays provide an amazingly playful feel on the trail or playground. Featuring the same dialed geometry and GiddyUp suspension as the alloy version, the carbon Scout is even better at turning trails into playgrounds. The fully guided internal cable routing for rear brake and derailleur are easy to use and rattle free. The collet main pivot keeps the rear end stiff and the threaded bottom bracket is a mechanics dream. All with around a 600 gram weight savings over the aluminum Scout.

 Fuckin' love trannys.
  • 31 1
@scottay2hottay: I prefer the trannys over that plus size stuff. Gross.
  • 20 1
@NoahColorado: I get the feeling not enough people get the reference, otherwise you'd have far more positive props for it lol.

Oh hell yes !!! Take my money now TRANSITION !!!!

If 125mm travel is considered just enough(for what?) could I have at least 15mm more to be equal with fork travel, as the more rear travel will not make it worse, but MORE PLAYFUL... ?
Or it will OVERFLOW travel amount like a BEERFUL glass added a little bit of BEER ?
  • 1 0
 @bohns1: why is that?

Sure but the new maxxis 2.7 'real tires' coming out may be interesting...just go 157 and be done.

Eh, aren't most 27.5" frames "not 27.5+ compatible"? I love this line of bikes but the whole angle Transition is taking with the marketing is a bit lame. If you want to keep it no-bullshit then just keep it no-bullshit.
  • 4 1
@Lornholio: good point. Marketing is marketing.
  • 64 7
"Not 27.5+ compatible" Sticking it to the industry! Love how Transtions first priority is still providing fun bikes to the masses!
  • 14 0
their "single speed cyclocross wich is not a sport" video is still one of the funniest things to grace the mtb internet world.
  • 10 1
well, it would be the smuggler to go 27.5+ compatible, so at this point "not 27.5+" is just blowing smoke. still, rad bike would definitely ride it.
  • 1 0
@b26-4-Life: they have stated they don't believe in Plus sizes 3
  • 8 1
 "Sticking it to the industry!"

explains why they don't make the suppressor any more
  • 5 1
@poah: But they're still a real business, and need to turn a profit too. I would guess that they'll "stick it to the industry" until they're losing money. Seems to make sense to me.
  • 31 5
 I'd have that over a 5010 anyday.
  • 5 13
flag tigen (Jul 26, 2016 at 14:53) (Below Threshold)
Not me. BB is too low, frame is heavier for no benefit.
  • 5 0
not so sure about that. Same price for frame alone, and probably heavier. otherwise these two are at the top of my list to go with my Nomad.
  • 2 0
Richt2000-why? SC completes start about 3600?
  • 2 5
I'd have the Mojo 3 over all of these.
  • 2 0
@codypup: demoed a 5010 mk2 and was unimpressed. The original (with a -1 angleset) felt more confident and quicker.

The only downside of the alu scout was the weight. That'll be sorted with this one.

Santa Cruz are a bit common now in the UK. I see more SC out that even specialized now...
  • 1 0
@Crossmaxx: that would be a great second choice.
  • 22 0
Not plus size compatible, is that a new standard?
  • 19 1
If I was buying a new bike, it'd probably be this. $3k frame hurts a little tho. Nice offering!!
  • 5 1
Try the AL version, I really like light bikes (not full on WW though) and I don't really notice the weight on the trail. Killer bike!
  • 3 0
same with the AL Patrol - build mine and it settled at 14,5kg (just under 32 lbs) and I don´t mind putting in 2.000 meters uphill.
  • 15 1
OVER EIGHT THOUSAND BRITISH POUNDS for the Scout 1, does that mean it's twice the bike now since its more than twice the price of last years alu one which i bought, great bike but fuck that price
  • 51 6
Starting to regret that Brexit vote?
  • 3 0
@dthomp325: aye man, one i didn't vote for, it's always been the case even before brexit, the figure you see in???? We pay in ????
  • 3 0
@dthomp325: that should say the figure you see in dollars we pay in pounds
  • 13 14
@dthomp325: majority didnt want leaders of other countries deciding their immigration and so many other polices...makes sense, they'll be fine
  • 28 6
 @dthomp325: Yep!
Starting to regret that Republican nomination?
  • 7 0
@jrocksdh: Don't know where to start...
  • 4 5
@jimmyconnors: the road to serfdom-any hayek, adams, locke, montesqueiu, federalist papers..all good starting points
  • 9 9
@dthomp325: nope, best thing this country has done in years
  • 6 1
@jimmyconnors: I maybe nieve, but I'd like to think that the majority of Americans feel there is no good choice in this election. Not that our votes really count any way. Welcome to Merica Comrade. Big money controls this country. Politicians are merely puppets here. The voice the the people is rarely heard in this country.
  • 5 0
@Bikethrasher: don't think you're naive at all - more a response to @dthomp325 (which was a funny). Every American I've talked to about has said exactly as you've said - lesser of two evils in Clinton.
Just look at what happened in the fallout of Brexit - for loads of the politicians, it was never about leaving or remaining. It was about career. The demographic here are rarely listened to too.

Even more reason to ride a carbon Scout like you stole it I imagine.
  • 6 6
@jimmyconnors: I agree that our choices are less than stellar, but Clinton the lesser of 2 evils, how is that? Let's look at the facts. While her husband was the gov, banging all those women, she cleaned up after him by threatening to destroy their lives if they talked (really advocating for women there). She got elected as a senator from NY (she is not from NY) and did zero. Secretary of State, did zero, except got a few people killed in Libya, did work stuff on her private server (something you and I would be fired for), and punched out before the shit hit the fan and left the pile of dung for Kerry. Hey, let's promote her to president, so she can continue doing a whole lot of nothing. I can imagine every world leader east of the EU hitting the floor launching after she gets elected, at how dumb we are.
  • 4 4
 @SlodownU: 100% agree with you there...What a mess.
  • 5 0
@SlodownU: all agreed - and there's a good proportion you left out. She's not who I'd choose for President. Nor would I choose Theresa May as our PM - but that's fine as I didn't get the choice anyhow. Seems from the outside that you have a system which consistently promotes a select few just as we do, the political class founded on privilege.
Having said all that - and again going back to all that you left out (interventionist foreign policy, some of her donors etc), she STILL has to be seen as the lesser of evils. Trump is running a campaign that is openly appealing to the deep currents of prejudice in the US, openly calling for much greater military involvement in other countries, has received funds from ex-KKK leaders etc. At least Clinton spins it. And is more moderate. And isn't so thin skinned and reactionary.
By the way - this is not me looking down on your choices, at all. We're in a mess too. We're just in a much softer Right mess than you will be if Trump gets in. And I know this isn't an exhaustive examination of either.

The Scout in grey is looking better with time.
  • 2 0
@jimmyconnors: Fair point. However tightening our borders has nothing to do with prejudice. A country without borders is not a country. My family came here taking the legal route, worked hard, and pay taxes and their fair share, others should have to do the same.

I would not trade in my 160mm travel for this bike, why would someone do that?
  • 5 0
@SlodownU: no, opening up the conversation about migration - especially rapidity of migration - isn't prejudice, nor is doing something about it.
But to suggest the banning and banishing of all Muslims due to terrorism, is. As is the suggestion that all Mexicans are thieves and rapists. It's prejudice, plain and simple. Open and unabashed. Those are facts, too.

Let's not get on to the 160mm vs 125mm subject again - we differ on that point.
  • 13 1
I'd ride one for sure... But that swoop on the downtube looks a little funky to me
  • 2 0
There seems to be a tiny little kink right at the front where it goes into the big head tube 'gusset' area. Other than that its a fairly smooth and consistent arc, but straighter than many other bikes' down tubes. Guessing that the straighter tubes will be lighter. That said the new Trek Slash with the dead-straight down tube looks funny to me now...prefer the subtle swoop of non-"knock-block" frames.
  • 2 0
Possibly for more water bottle clearance? Not sure if its a structural thing. I dont mind it though and it does mean that you wont be wedging a bottle in and out and constantly rubbing the frame and putting marks on it.
  • 3 0
As long as i cant see it while riding its all good.
  • 10 1
Not a fan of carbon myself but good to see Transition doing it right! f*ck press fit, boost, 27+ and all that bollock. I hope people keep on buying the Suppressor too, I am in love with mine.
  • 11 1
why transition WHYYYY ????!!! My wife will kill me...
  • 30 2
No she won't, just use these:

1.lie about the price of the new bike:
- I got it on a deal, over 30% off
- I wrote sone stuff on the internet and they got me on their test rider program so I got it 50% off

2.lie about how much you got for your old bike
- I sold a lot of old parts, so I spend almost no money on the new bike
- thisfork Ibought last winter didn'tdrop in price at all

3.Lie why you need a new bike:
- frame cracked
- wheels are getting old and need to be replaced from safety reasons. Aging of aluminium. You know Honey, those new wheels cost a lot, it's not worth to sell them and buy new ones, it's cheaper to buy a whole new bike
- i need a race bike with race geometry to take part in races/ I am gettingpains from that race bike, I need amore relaxed geo and I don't race anymore

I buy only fully black bikes and swap the white saddle and white grips over. Riding same bike since 2010 and 'cleaned it really well' twice since then ; )

I give this a 4....on the Clydesdale scale. It would take 4 Clydesdale horses to pull this bike off my face.
  • 4 1
I have a smuggler and love it! They seriously need to make a carbon version of it...not like I'd be able to afford it or anythingWink
  • 3 0
I would be willing to bet it's coming. My hopes are dreams are for a carbon giddy-up DH bike, mmmmm.
  • 2 0
 same here!!
  • 1 0
I have been waiting for this bike since the release of the C-Patrol; but was hoping cost would be lower!!

Same build using Kit 2 according to there site, has a difference of 1.2 pounds for the Lg.-frame; with a price difference of $1,100.00.
Is it worth the extra cost for the carbon frame? The carbon is beautiful!!
  • 2 1
Just amazed to read about these "new" "low, long and snappy" geometries: when compared to my 2012 26" Superlight L (setup with 120mm fork) ETT (61cm), HTA (68deg), BB heioght (3205) and chainstay lengths (424) don't seem that much different.
  • 4 1
Transition has some of the most dialed bikes out there. Truly modern geo and great build kits. Stoked!
  • 3 0
I see the 2017 patrol has new super deluxe but the scout is still running a monarch?
  • 1 0
Just checked that out - what's up with that??
  • 2 0
I'm sure this is just because the super deluxe aren't ready in the smaller sizes yet but it just seems like an odd time to roll out the new carbon frame with a rear shock that is essentially obsolete and can't be directly switched out for the new model
  • 4 1
Damn, now that my scout is dialed they go and do this...
  • 1 0
I concur....now I've got to save some pennies so I can get a carbon buddy for the bright yellow alloy
  • 4 1
Got a red one on order! Nice addition to my TR500!

Kona is going to lose sales with this. Still no Carbon process..
  • 8 0
I have a Process and would like it if Kona went back to a threaded bottom bracket.
  • 1 0
Beater32@ how is Kona going to lose sales on a scout? Carbon or not it's not a new design or use of new components.
  • 2 0
@bcbikeman: I am rooting for the Process to eventually adopt the T47 BB.
  • 2 0
Love it. And that sexy redness. Any chance of you doing the same with the Smuggler guys?!
  • 1 0
WAHOOO!!!! bought a used tranny scout 2015 from this board in may, been praying for a carbon version! W00T!

I've always wanted a Transition bike. Looks fresh. Cheers to whoever buys one.
  • 2 1
This was a no-brainer based on how popular these Scouts have been. Very good looking bike. Santa please bring.
  • 3 1
If it was a carbon Smuggler, I'd consider selling my Hightower to get one.
  • 2 0
I like tubes inside tubes....makes for much easier cable installation.

Why everyone happy with expensive halfcarbon frame? What's wrong with boost and 27 wheels?
