First Look: Transition Bikes Triple - Core Bike 2016

Feb 2, 2016
by Olly Forster
There's certainly been an increase in the number of brands adding slopestyle-specific bikes to their range recently. This trend doesn't look to be slowing down, yet in recent years, one of the first brands to offer a slopestyle bike to consumers, Transition Bikes, pulled their model from the line. For all intents and purposes, it looked like Transition had fallen out of love with super-short travel rigs designed for sailing over jumps, instead diverting their energy to the trail and all-mountain sector. Little did we know that couldn't be further from the truth...

The Transition Bikes Triple

Transition Bikes Triple
Rolling on good old 26" hoops, the Transition Triple will be available in a single size with a reach measurement of 429mm, and in either 'Poppy Red' or 'Neon Green'. They'll also offer a frame-only option.

Let's just touch on something about slopestyle bikes very quickly. They are unlike the vast majority of mountain bikes out there, which most of us can sling a leg over and go for a ride on - perhaps not to their fullest, but we can get down a trail or two. Slopestyle bikes, however, are a completely different breed, but be that as it may, put your hands up if you've always wanted one? While not that many of us ride 'slopestyle', who wouldn't love one of these in their collection for a casual rip around the pump track, BMX track, dirt jump sessions or what about some slalom racing action as well?

Transition Bikes Triple
Delivering a paltry 100mm of travel through a RockShox Monarch shock, the Triple was not designed for hammering through rock gardens or ripping down off-piste singletrack in the boonies. This is a thoroughbred slopestyle bike designed to take the sting out of landing jumps and drops, and to keep you grinning from ear to ear.
Transition Bikes Triple
The team at Transition have really worked their magic on the aesthetics for the new Triple, delivering a great looking bike that certainly lives up to the legacy of its predecessor, the Transition Double, a bike that was possibly ahead of its time and garnered a lot of attention from those looking for a slopestyle bike before such a thing existed.

Transition Bikes Triple
A concentric bottom bracket pivot, similar to those found on other slopestyle-specific bikes, helps maintain consistent chain tension when running a single-speed setup. The ultra short 390mm chainstays behind it will only help boost the fun factor, which will surely love some rear wheel action.

Transition Bikes Triple
The stock cable routing, a setup long employed on BMX bikes, is a nice touch and should help keep your cockpit tangle free and your front brake working, bar spin after bar spin.
Transition Bikes Triple
Sliding vertical dropouts, a derailleur hanger, and ISCG 05 mounts give the Triple a degree of flexibility should you want to run gears.

Transition Bikes Triple
There's no escaping the reality of how much fun this bike looks, but we'll have to wait a few more weeks for the official line from Transition, so watch the space...

Thats actually a really nice looking bike. can for sure see the old bottle rocket design still there which is awesome
  • 60 4
well it's more like the Double then a bottle rocket that why the name is now Triple
  • 30 1
I feel like you just spoke to a math class.
Don't forget N + 1 ! (N = bikes you already have)
  • 43 3
I believe the correct equation is number of bikes=divorce - 1
  • 2 1
 I'm in love!
  • 6 0
Looks light. Just found a replacement for my Double.
  • 3 0
j-t-g i may need a math check, but doesn't that mean you would have to have negative one bikes to avoid divorce???
  • 7 1
@Ctk11 Remember that with many variable equations, the number may change at moments notice. Currently for me Devorce=N+1*3, therefor the correct number of bikes at this point is B=(N+1*3)-1
  • 3 0
@TwoWheelMike ah my bad. I was under the assumption that divorce was just like an x value, i had no idea N+1 was to be substituted
  • 5 4
The Double was one of the most fun bikes I have ever been on. This looks even better. My Distortion is an ok park bike, but definitely isn't as fun to kick around as a true slope bike. I've had my eye on a P.Slope to supplement it, but I think that's been eliminated now that I've seen this thing. Fantastic job on this bike, Transition. Now PLEASE go consumer-direct!

I heard a roumer there's a new bottle rocket on the way.....

Well since Canyon is being a punani and won't come sell the stitched 720 here in the US, LOOKS LIKE I'LL BE SAVING FOR THIS LOCAL BIKE. Transition, always coming through. Fuck yeah.
  • 2 0
Since I returned to the sport in 2008, Transition has had a reputation of being the "bike of the people", where I'm from, at least. I like that their priority has always been somewhat affordable gravity-specific bikes, and that they offered a specific tool for every job (DH, FR/Park, Slope, DJ, AM). Their trail bikes also seem to be popular and the Klunker looks like the ultimate fun machine.

I have to really admire their entrepreneurial spirit as well. Didn't these guys start out doing this company part time while selling cell phones or something? Going from a tiny startup to industry players in such a short time frame is a pretty monumental feat, no matter what industry you're in.

I'd feel like such a poser hitting the blue and green jump lines on this thing. But damnit I sure want to.

I've got a recently restored corsair konig mk1 with an Argyle rct, full zee and hope/spank wheels. It's been kicking around for three or four years and I remembered how much fun it was and decided to resurrect it. I'm glad I did. One part I would like to buy that to my knowledge is not available, is a small gear shifter that simply mounts on the cable stop of the rear mech. My bike, and by the look of it this bike, does not have bottle cage bosses for that cool down tube shifter mount. I would love to get the shifter off the handlebars because bar spins are one of the few tricks i can do
  • 1 0
Lots of guys use pipe clamps and or zip ties to mount it to the downtube. I did it with pipe clamps on my old banshee rampant and it worked out
  • 1 0
A mate of mine did that and while it worked well, it looked shite. I wonder if there is one that clamps around the seat rails or post.

Threw arms up too fast, strained shoulder.

"Welp Steve I saw this bike and thought golly that's a nice bike, I'll put a dropper post and a front break on it and just have a super time at the bike path with the kids, and maybe even do one of those endurances"

 La bicicleta Es muy subrosa!!
  • 6 1
Meh, Lo parece que un session
  • 6 0
Great job Transition! All the features make sense for a slope bike and is has really clean lines. I'm sure slope bikes are a relatively small market, but you should be dominating the market with this one.
  • 9 1
Someone will buy it and make it a trail bike
  • 7 0
genuine question - you don't think it would be super fun?
  • 6 2
Yes it would but that's what people do to them when they can't do tricks and jumps, from my experience.
  • 2 0
Lots of people do this. I personally didn't when I had a slope bike, but I met a lot of people who threw dropper posts and ran casettes on their ticket s and some on p slopes (p slopes have optional deraileuasdkljf23er hangers). More power to the rider to do what they want with the bike, from what I've heard slope bikes make excellent fun trail bikes if you're jumping around a lot. Over at my local hill (Duthie) it's a little overkill to have a downhill or park bike, okay it's way overkill, but they have a lot of jump trails that you can use your hardtail on but having a teeny bit of travel is always welcome. I used to run around with a p slope there forever, I'm no soderstrom but overall slope bikes are extremely versatile and offer a little bit of forgiveness for people who suck like me.
  • 1 0
I did (Bottlerocket). Not by choice, btw... I was looking for an indestructible frame I could move parts from my broken Heckler and the frame presented itself. It's pretty heavy, pedals like a beeaootch, but comes alive pointed down. I've also ended using it quite a bit to practice jumps. BTW, my buddy has one too and rode his as a trail bike for a long time (among other things).

I wonder if they coud ever lure one of the top riders like Rheeder or Semanhuck with this bike?
  • 6 0
With the appropriate paycheck for sure
  • 1 0
i feel like semenuk and rheeder will never leave trek.
  • 5 0
Sweet rig. Now its your turn KONA, bring back the bass, or preferably, replace it with something more awesome!
  • 7 1
Those guys just keep working their magic. Unstoppable genius.
  • 1 0
i bought a 2017 Triple and it hasn't worked properly since day 1. Piece of shit with horrible design. Two piece stays? wtf
  • 4 0
That's a nice looking bike. May have to get that to replace my stolen bottlerocket.
  • 1 0
i bought one from here. It was in mint condition. i've had nothing but problems with it. Space between chainstay and tire is perfect but the space between seatstay and tire is off. The chain snaps and the rotor rubs on the caliper making a horrible squeaking noise. They sent me a new seatstay but it didn't change anything. This bike has been nothing but a god dam nightmare. i wouldn't recommend this hunk of crap to anyone. STICK WITH A HARDTAIL TRUST ME.
  • 5 0
 Yeah could be fun!
  • 4 0
Seems to have covert influence in the front triangle aesthetics as well.
  • 5 0
 Dibbs
  • 3 0
I have a double and it's great, but it is very much a heavy duty bike. This looks absolutely perfect!
  • 1 0
I remember when slope bikes and costal crew were just starting up and then the phase pasted really happy to see the slope bike make a comeback not only with transition but with all company's.
  • 6 1
 It is 26" ,right?
  • 9 0
How else do you get chainstays that short
  • 10 2
Wait.. But you can't have fun on 26...
  • 4 0
@adrennan Boost, duh! Only way to make chainstays shorter...
  • 2 0
I used to have a really cool 24" GT cruiser, now I'm old. I need a new cruiser.
  • 3 0
I'll make babies with that thing, if it allows me?!...
  • 1 0
Always good to have a Dj bike/ slopestyle in your arsenal! Nice looking bike too ! I'm still riding my 24" ID p45 but I'm usually out now on my iron horse 6point6 .
  • 2 0
Presented from Whittle Bury Hall... Did you try it on the golf or on the F1 track ?
  • 1 0
Subtle changes from the double. Very fun looking trick horsey. They should release it in colors that were available on the Double.
  • 1 0
problems : it looks like you cant run mtb cranks .... thats a problem. no water bottle shifter mount, bad axle path .... pros: short wheel base
  • 1 0
 Incorrect.

73mm threaded bb.

Can run XO cranks (; semenuk style.
  • 1 0
 @Aled-DHI: yoour very wrong
  • 1 0
@wuzupjosh: Available only in one size, the small frame has an effective top tube of 546mm. Maximum tire clearance is listed at 26 x 2.3″ with a 32t maximum chainring.
  • 7 4
1x and a dropper = best XC bike ever made
  • 1 0
that's my double, 1x10 and dropper...
  • 2 0
To be fair, I took the gears off of my slope bike, and am regretting it somewhat. That being said, it's much more reliable.
  • 2 0
Goddamnit Transition! I just finished gathering the parts for a new bike, and you spring this on me?
  • 1 0
now we just need a this in a longer wheelbase and reach so we can have a sweet throw-able short travel trail bike on the now "retro/classic" 26" wheel size
  • 3 0
 wow niceee
  • 3 0
 Anyone know the price?
  • 4 0
more than the average (myself) 15 year old can afford. guessing around 1500ish
  • 3 0
@andrewgiesbrecht the double frameset was $1500, im thinking probably around 2500 for the whole bike (USD)

  • 2 1
Soo... whats going on with Gwinner?
  • 2 1
he said on instagram that something held it up a week. If you theorize he's going to YT, the sad passing of Kelly McGarry could've stopped them from releasing the news today as originally planned. I wouldn't want to announce my plans right after such a tragedy either.
