Trek World Racing 2012 Team Lineup

by Mike Levy
Dec 12, 2011

As the number 1 Downhill team in the world this year, Trek World Racing will return with 3 elite men, namely Aaron Gwin (USA), Justin Leov (NZL) and Neko Mulally (USA). The 3 Downhill men will be aboard their Trek Session 9.9 carbon bikes and racing the full World Cup along with a number of MTB Grand Prix events in the US, Sea Otter Classic, Crankworx in Whistler, and other selected events.

Podium
bigquotesI'm looking forward to the upcoming year. We had an awesome season in 2011 and I'm excited to get back to the races with my team! - Aaron Gwin

Protection is a premium. The Bell lid Justin Leov was wearing in yesterday s training has officially been binned but Leov got a complete work up in the hospital and has been cleared to qualify. As a protected rider he opted to cruise his qualie and save the big risks for race day.
bigquotes2012 is going to be an exciting year; with a new coach on board I feel a new motivation towards my racing. My hopes and goals are to have fun at the events like I did this year and aim for those top steps of the podium, which so many times have just alluded me.- Justin Leov

bigquotesI'm excited to go into 2012 and put together all of the experiences that have brought me to this point. I can see it coming together already. It's going to be awesome spending every weekend with people I love being around, I really can't wait to go racing.- Neko Mulally

Also new for the team in 2012 is the hiring of 2000 World Downhill Champion, Myles Rockwell, as a rider liaison assisting the riders with their training, strategy and racing at the World Cups and Worlds.

Tracy Moseley successfully raced for the program for last 3 years, taking 18 World Cup podiums (including 6 wins), the World Championship Title in 2010, and the World Cup title in 2011, however she has decided to take her career in a different direction in 2012. T-MO will be making her own announcement.

The team will field 4 Cross Country riders including new signing Junior XC phenom Anton Cooper (NZL) who will be racing selected events throughout 2012 while continuing with his education. Willow Rockwell (USA) returns to full time racing after getting married and having a child in December with husband Myles, with the goal of being selected to race for the USA at the London Olympics. Returning for their 4th year with the team are the Flueckiger brothers from Switzerland. 2010 Under 23 World Champion Mathias, and Lukas who finish 5th at last year’s Worlds, will be opting to spend more time racing the Trek Superfly 29’ers in 2012.

bigquotesI have more confidence than ever before. I will start my 2012 season where my 2011 season ended. The Olympics are my biggest goal for the year.- Luk Flueckiger

bigquotes2011 was my first year as a full time professional athlete. It was such a big change and I expected too much from myself after a season like 2010. I learnt so much in 2011, and I'll bring all this experience to 2012. I won't look at other riders, results, etc. I will focus solely on me! My moto will be 'step by step', improving throughout the year.- Math Flueckiger

bigquotesI am very excited to join Trek World Racing for the 2012 season. It is a significant step forward in my goals of becoming a World class rider. This is aided by the fact that the team's focus is at the World Cup, World Championship and Olympic stage where they are able to provide top level support that is required to perform at this level. This is a great way to kick-start my career as a professional Mountain Biker and I look forward to what lies ahead.- Anton Cooper

bigquotesI look forward to being the fastest mom on the planet. With the support of my Trek World Racing team and sponsors, I know I have everything I need to be the very best. I intend to do my part, and let the universe supply me with energy, grace and balance as I follow my destiny path.- Willow Rockwell

bigquotesAfter the successes of the past 3 years, the team returns once again with a strong line-up of athletes, and the same talented staff and sponsors we've been lucky to have with us in 2011, building on all that we've achieved to date. New signings Anton Cooper and Myles Rockwell bring both youthful enthusiasm and experience. Our major sponsors Trek, JBL, Shimano and Fox have been extremely supportive and I'm really excited to take the 2012 version of the team on the road next year. - Team Owner Martin Whiteley

Gwin has set him self up for epic loss I think.

Sure, he will podium a lot but after last season, but everyone is hungry to beat him and it will happen. It's going to be a very close season in racing

we all know that its gunna be alot harder for gwin this year
with danny hart comfortably set in the wc now
fairclough on scott
brycland and hill are gunna be on form
and we've got no idea how the athertons are gunna do cause we dont know who they'll be riding for ..
santa cruz are gunna be good aswell
trek were on top of the carbon last year but you know that every other manufactorers gunna be pushing there bikes beyond cause now they've got a target to beat

Stinkysmith- At the level these riders are riding at I doubt other manufacturers "pushing there bikes beyond cause now they've got a target to beat" would change anything. It does not matter much what bike these guys are on, there all world class athletes. It all comes down to which team is willing to spend the most money on your teams training and preparation. Dannys bike was not any faster than the trek 9.9, danny was the most prepared man on the mountain that day. Wherever the athertons end up they will be fast!

 i agree
but all the manufactorers want nothing more than a world cup win or championship
and all these riders want the same TO WIN if you dont then your not a world cup racer
but ill admit trek probably have the best training and that however all the teams will learn from them and how successfull they have been and use their techniques
and danny was faster because 1. hes english and we have near on nothing but rain ..so he is used to our conditions 2. he REALLY wanted a win cause he was soo close in some of the world cups and he knew the conditions and he took more risks to get it (logdrop ect) and they really paid off to be nearly 12 seconds ahead of world cup racers and he deffinatly deserved it ..
and like almost every other world cup gwin deserved it for all his hard training and that all im saying is that other riders and companies are coming and they're going to do whatever it takes to win .. even if its only one race

I think Gwin will be even faster this year, given that he is still relatively new to the sport. First Tomac taught him everything he knew about DH and training, and now Myles will teach him a few more tricks. Plus he will be even stronger this year if he trained like he did last year.

I'm unfortunately expecting alot of injuries this year from some of the big name riders because they will be pushing so hard to keep up with him. There are so many riders out there hungry for world cup wins, but they don't really have the skills to keep up with Gwin. So they will push the limit a little too far and cause self inflicted carnage to themselves. I hate to do this but I'm making injury predictions. Hear me out before you give me negative props...The most likely guys to take themselves out are those who race on flat pedals. They know they have to make up time on Gwin in the technical sections cause he is killing them in the pedal sections. But their big problem is that Gwin is going just as fast as them in the technical sections, if not faster. So they have to ride way over their abilities in the technical sections and take insane risks if they want to have a shot at the win. I don't want to throw names around, but I'm talking about guys like Hill, Brosnan, Miami Bryce, and Bren-Dawg, those kind of riders. Maybe Steve Smith, he is still getting used to clips. God I hope I'm wrong about all this. But I think Gwin has gotten inside just about everyones head with his dominance in all conditions. Minnnar is just scratching his head, he doesn't know where he is going to find the speed to catch Gwin. Same with Gee A, except he is even more pissed cause he hasn't won in awhile. The only chance they have is if Gwin makes a mistake or crashes, it's like with James Stewart and supercross. Except that Gwin doesn't make many mistakes.

It's going to be an exciting season, especially with the DH1 series.

@ Protour , I can see where your coming from,I think Gwin will definitly be faster but the point you made about no one being able to keep up with him will continue is were I dont agree.

Gwin had a great advantage this year. The element of surprise , because he didnt even win in 2010 so no one was expecting him to dominate this year so the top 10 just stuck to their normal routine because they were doing well with that and werent expecting anyone to destroy them,Especially Gee and greg.So Gwin knew No one would expect it so he trained harder than anyone and came out on top,But now its different. Now everyone is expecting the worst and will train hard until they collapse making sure no one will have a huge advantage again like Gwin. And the one who trains their hardest and more, like Gwin done this year,Will be the one that comes out on top.

@downhill340, I know gwin came out and smashed everyone, but I just cant imagine that the other world class riders were sitting around taking it easy. This is the best of the best competing, can these vetrans who have been going for many years really step it up that much? If they were not already pushing it to there best then I doubt they would be competing at this level.

flag Downhill340 (Dec 13, 2011 at 14:25)
Im not saying they took it easy,Im just saying they might have done the little bit extra of fitness training , strength training and proper diet and conditioning as the year before to improve , but Gwin decided to do a f*cking alot more.

I just think the others expect it now so Gwin might not be as dominant next year.
Or if Gwin does come out on top next year by smashing everybody I will accept that he has more skill on a bike.

@protour, I agree. Look what happened to Rach Atherton 2 seasons ago. She pushed her self too hard to get on the podium and had a ton of serious injuries. I hope nothing like this happens to any riders this season, but I agree Gwin did dominate this last season. Danny did awesome at World Champs but didn't win anything the rest of the season. No doubt he's an amazing rider, but he still doesn't have that consistency that everyone wants to have. That race reminded me of Hill in '07 '08, had unbelievably fast times, but never was always consistent with them. That is one thing that Gwin has over everyone else in my book. He has a stupid amount of training and dedication and consistency. I think its gonna be one hell of a season.

Would be amazing if he swept every race like he almost did this past year. Haha. This sport is getting ridiculous.
