Twenty6's F1 and Straitline's Ultra Stems - 2 Options for the Boxxer Direct mount standard
Feb 27, 2009
The manufacturing industry for our sport is a cut throat business. Everyone is trying to make their product that much lighter, that much more unique, but not that much more expensive. The cost to manufacture goods has risen so much in the past it amazes me that these companies are still on the grind to create the lightest, most unique and functional parts for your bike, and they are succeeding. Recently we got the new Twenty6 F1 stem, along with the Straitline Ultra stem, so let's take a side by side look at them.

Twenty6 products is a small component company based out of Belgrade, Montana. As a young company, Twenty6 has a small lineup of products like Stems, Pedals, Bar end caps, and brake levers that make up their line up, however, each item has a unique touch. Recently we picked up an F1 Stem from Twenty6, their answer to the direct mount needs of Boxxer and 40 enthusiasts.
Created out of aerospace grade 6061 T6 Billet aluminum, the F1 Stem has been CNC Machined down to an extremely low weight of 124 grams with mounting hardware, all done in the United States of America. Designed as a Zero rise, but adjustable reach stem, the F1 Stem has optional 45mm, 50mm, and 55mm holes as length options. The F1 Stem comes in 11 different colorways, everything from snow camo to bright Pink to Wood grain.
There is one small thing I would like to mention about the F1 Stem. Seeing as it is adjustable it needs to be able to move forward and back, and the adjustments are more then helpful, allowing you to adjust your reach and still have a direct mount design, however, the tabs on the rear of the stem COULD damage your knees if you were not properly prepared. In the 45mm setting there is about 5mm of the stem that hangs over the back of the top crown that could potentially be a contact point for your knees if you aren't careful. Thankfully Tyler has rounded the back of the stem to ease this potential encounter.
The F1 Stem is available from Twenty6, or one of their select distributors. The cost is $150 in Canada, and $123.00 in the USA.
When Drew Mitchell isn’t out racing his bike, he’s developing parts for his next race season. Sponsor Straitline has worked in conjunction with Drew to achieve the shortest reach available. The F1 is a fixed position, 28mm reach direct mount stem that will make a beautiful addition to your Boxxer or Fox 40 forks.
The 28mm length forces the rider into a more central position over the bars, in order to keep the weight over the bars, and the rubber side down. Designed to work with 31.8mm handlebars, with 25.4 reducers available, the Ultra stem was designed to be very weight conscious, just like your ex girlfriend. At 136 grams with all 8 high strength alloy bolts in place the Ultra Stem has been designed to provide you with a secure, safe way of mounting your stem to your big bike.
A small note about the Ultra Stem, there is a height restriction on the stem which is limited by your steer tube. As you can see in this photo there is limited clearance. Be forewarned that you may have to cut your steer tube in order to make space for the Ultra Stem. The Ultra stem retails for $140, and can either be found through Straitline, or through one of their distributors.

i dont like the fact that, just to check if the nuts are tight on the straitline, u have to remove the bars...not very handfull

ya i agreee thats not going to be the best thing about there stem, the f1 on the other hand has a really clean design and looks pretty good too!

Pperini that can easily be solved by thinking "outside the box" and going to ace, osh, or home depot, and getting normal grade 8, or stainless grade 10 hex head bolts. You would be able to tighten them all you want.
Ya guys gotta stop putting up road blocks to stuff.
It was a good point none the less. Why don't you email them and mention it. I bet they would listen and adjust either the design, or include different bolts. Simple. Companies listen to people, especially if its about bugs that can effect product sales.

both a re nice. the twenty6 is more sexy and :pimp. and the straitline has more meat reserves. a stem has to absorbe alot of powers
... i´d take the straitline for fr and the twenty6 for race only

nice good choice but id run neither just cuz where they bolt onto your fork they dont look to tuff for my liking i think i would rip it off just tryen to bunny hop but i guess you need to try it out to see right

I have an Ultra on my bike and trust me you won't rip it off bunny hopping.
The thing is solid, it can take all of the abuse you can throw at it.

gordo why would you reply to something like that. why would i respond to something like your comment? who knows... blah

The clamping width on the bar clamp on that Twenty6 stem seems very narrow, surly that can't be a good thing in terms of flex and more stress on the bars!
- - 2 Show
I didn't notice any more flex than the e13 ali stem I had on before that and the ali is really wide. And it was lighter!!

i think they look mint off a bike... but when they put the stem on one i just dnt like the looks of direct mount stems
- + 1 Show
Who cares what it looks like? Surely performance is paramount and that is why direct mount stems are now on dh bikes, like a lot of technology from motocross etc.

Short = sweet, so the strait rules, to bad it wont fit 888! Iwould bolt them with locktide!

if you want a super short legth, id go for strailine, thats a fact, but if you want a sleek, adjustable, pure beautiful stem, go for the twenty 6.

Ooooohhh they are soooo light ... I don't need to workout anymore ... can't wait to showoff my new spandex ... and even in pink ..whoopeee ... and a few grams lighter than mine other stem. Seriously, weight weenie whiners aside, they both look nice, but even with the limitations in accessing the stem bolts, I would choose the Straitline because it looks STRONGER with the 2 piece design and has a cleaner look ... who gives a F$%^$K about 9 grams of weight. :-) If you do,you seriously need to start worrying about the gym. Plus the Straitline are from a Canadian company.

My Twenty6 stems are amazing! We use the Direct mount and the standard clamp for our race bikes and can't be any happier. strong, light and elegant!

lol Stoss well yeah perfermance is paramount, but ppl do care about what it looks like i would say, or else they def would'nt have made them look this good, they'd be back to black lol. but yeah you are right that performance is the most important

Theses stems are sweet and all, but what about those of us who own 888s, our only option is sunline and funn. I want a snazzy looking direct mount for my 888!

I got the straitline stem (*cough first in the UK cough*) and its sweet! Yes it is annoying that you have to remove the bars to check the bolts, but lets be honest how often do you ACTUALLY do it? Its super stiff and forces you into a much better riding position. I love it!!!

So it can fit or not?
I know really nothing on what single and dbl crown are sadly cause i dont care...

I guess ill ask this. Does it really make any difference of the reach at 5mm increments? Couldn't they just of had a 50mm reach(one setting) and knock of some more weight at the same time?

I agree. I just wanted to say also, that this guy Tyler is way rad. buy his stuff and help the little guy. I mean, I'm broke but I still bought a tee shirt.

i thought stratline is gonna make a 45mm version or something

I have a set of blue Straightline platform pedals on my Foes Fly and love them, so I would prefer the Straightline although the Twenty6 is beautiful too!!
- - 3 Show
so straightline uses pro bike racers that aren't engineers to design their stuff?
watch out for that one.
seriously though, one part i wouldn't be looking to save weight on is my stem. does the idea of your bars not being connected to your bike bother anyone out there?

obviously the straight line crew and drew worked together(engineers and pro rider)... and ill go as far as to say that all GOOD bike parts have alot of rider input. im looking forward to buying one of the straightline stems to go with the awesome peddals that i just picked up.

2 Amazing direct mount stems there. I think companys should make more 888 direct mount stems.

Nice to see straitline used such a nice Chromag bar in their stem.
Why not just use a Chromag stem as well, it would make a nice match.
