In 1994, François Gachet won the Downhill Championship in Vail. In 2009, Fabien Barel sweeps Maribor’s World Cup. 2010, Sabrina Jonnier wins the overall World Cup ranking for the 5th time. Guess what the link is between these three legendary “Frenchies"? The three of them wore URGE helmets. The first one being a unique piece never marketed and the two others being known as the “Down-O-Matic“.

As Urge’s roots grow deep, we dedicated our knowledge from 2008 on, to engineer only MTB helmets. It’s wonderful to define your own age and the competition. It’s beneficial to learn from this great experience, but you can’t lose track of time looking back on your glorious past; starting over again from nothing is sometimes essential for innovation.

April 14th 2016, Urge Bike Products is really proud to introduce you to the Down-O-Matic RR.

Made from our unequalled technology of glass fiber linen composites, the Down-O-Matic RR becomes one of the lightest high end helmets on the market.

The smallest details were studied to come up with what we consider to be the perfect helmet to enjoy safely and comfortably while DH riding, obviously the key practice in MTB, the one that makes us proud when we talk about our sport. Today as well as into the future we are fully committed to give in the best that we can by developing great products for our soul passion of mountain biking.

Driven by our roots, ready to face any challenge in 2016 !

Outer shell and EPS
Our DH helmet shares the same outer shell and EPS as our Archi Enduro model, except at the rear and regarding the chin guard. Our outer shell in composite material is a unique blend of glass fibre (80%) and natural linen fibre (20%), mixed with a thermosetting resin. This material is meticulously laid out in order to obtain a multi-axial fibre with outstanding benefits that guarantees a better spread and diffusion of the shock waves more on the helmet than on the skull.

Our performances during the crash tests highly exceeded the legal requirements for the different norms (CE 1078 - CPSC 1203 - AS/NZS 2063) and outperform ABS, traditional and carbon fiber shells. The focus was put on the chin guard in particular to obtain the best ratio between rigidity and necessary distortion to absorb impacts. The essential wide opening of the chin guard, reinforced by a metallic grid, benefits from a high density polyurethane upper part. The obtaining of the ASTM F1952 norm, the only one that tests the chin guard, validates without a doubt the safety features highly sought-after. The structure of the EPS has been designed to complete the unique features of the outer shell. Thanks to this exclusive combo, our helmet is lighter than the existing carbon top of the range models. We have created one of the safest helmets in this category with a weight around 1.050 kg making it among the lightest.

Visor
Made of polyethylene, it is able to deform in case of an impact and exceeds the requirements of the norms. It is adjustable and fixed using aluminum screws.

Straps
The Double D buckle is our choice for ergonomics, safety and comfort.

Goggle/glasses compatibility
The wide opening aims at guarantee an optimal field of view, compatible with all goggles on the market, even the wider ones. Lateral “gripping” pads and the ergonomics of the helmet allows for a perfect position of the goggle strap.

Ventilation
10 vents allow good ventilation in any circumstances, even at low speed. Ventilation on the front of the helmet is particularly unique, thanks to the specific design of the chin guard and to wide frontal vents.

DownOmatic RR

Fitting and inner padding
The inner padding is entirely detachable and washable. It was designed for optimal comfort and retention. The dual-density cheek pads were particularly elaborated to obtain a perfect fit. The one-piece pad brings excellent fit and comfort. The “bamboo treated” material used targets a triple efficiency: antibacterial, moisture wicking and hypoallergenic.

I never understand the hole on the visor, it kinda defeats the purpose of having a visor.
  • 32 5
A visor brings air resistance, so making holes in it reduces the air drag.

When you crash face first, visor acts as a crumple zone as well.

@lucascheng: When you crash face first, you're "happy" when the rigid visor twist your cervical vertebrae.

What I don't understand is that ventilation ports on the sides. They are working only if you don't use goggles!?
  • 8 2
@pakleni: have you not been over the border?! Frenchies LOVE the fullface and glasses look! ;D

insert coin, and you´ll see it

Moonroof to let in a little light and ambience.

 @brutalpedz:

It also gives you those amazing eye blinding moments in the middle of corners when sun blasts through it for a split second.

It makes it lighter too, like a Session!

Let' say it's les ugly than before ... Big Grin
  • 23 3
I think these helmets are pretty good looking in an ironic sort of sense. They're so ugly they're good.

Urge tries to do something different, using new material, new shapes and forms. I used to have a first gen Down-o-matic and it was light, comfortable and cheap. Design was different for sure but you end-up liking it because the helmet is great. This new version goes more toward the cliché of full face helmets so you should like it more ...
  • 4 2
 @Balgaroth:
I also had the original Downomatic helmet.
Honestly it was the worst helmet I have ever owned.
The inner liner used to be a joke. It actually fell apart in less than one season of riding..
This new version looks like a big improvement over the original.

@BeerGuzlinFool: improvements that make products better are so mainstream.
  • 1 0
@BeerGuzlinFool: Had mine for 4 season with one of them spent in Åre for 3 months riding everyday. Still have it has back-up helmet. Never had any problem with the liner even though having it removable would have been great but wasn't so common in 2010.
  • 1 1
@groghunter: Improvements are great, changing your design (as in the look of the helmet not tech features) to go with more edgy, aggressive style (aka mainstream and usual) is not necessarily a good thing. For exemple POC stick to their original style which I think is a nice as it's different and brings diversity on the helmet market.

@Balgaroth: Urge is so over. it's over!
  • 12 1
Urge has very specific designe products as no one have. Nice looking helmet.

 Steps to buy this helmet:

-Go to ride100percent.com
-Buy the Aircraft carbon
  • 2 1
Lol so many people who like it , it suprises me. I think it's just as ugly as the first one they made. Which was downright gross. Quite a few full faces that are waaay better looking, D3,Aircraft,Full9,specialized, rampage pro carbon. There's a reason all those helmets have become "mainstream" and lots of people have them, and not many have the previous urge.
  • 1 0
Nuggs to that I love my Aircraft!
  • 3 0
My first full face helmet 5 years ago was a Down O Matic and I loved it!! Fit great and was so comfy!! Had a couple helmets since one being a CF Remedy and the Urge is still my favorite... Cheaper, lighter, and comfy!! Not to mention they are good looking helmets. Really like the new design!! And still at a reasonable price point!!????????

Love my original Down-o-matic, this one looks fantastic as well. Great video as well

Nobody has commented on the fact he was on the Canyon Sender? ...screw the helmet that machine is a work of art! I got to demo one at the factory in Koblenz last weekend. LEGIT,
  • 5 0
What did he cook on his engine? Seems as though no one is asking the important questions here.
  • 1 0
The engine is on the rear. The trunk is on the front, he just bring out some sea urchin he bought earlier for an "oursinade" (sea urchin degustation in south eastern shore of french Mediterranean).
  • 1 0
@gnralized: ah I see, thanks for clearing that up
  • 1 0
I knew it was the trunk (or boot if you're a Brit) but I had no idea what was in that crate. How'd they expect us to know he'd bring sea urchins to a f*cking picnic? You sure can't see 'em that well.
  • 5 0
Not my first choice for a good looking helmet.
  • 4 0
"The Double D buckle is our choice for ergonomics, safety and comfort." Double D is always comfortable in my book...
  • 2 0
I have the old version and the helmet is absolutely fantastic! Its light, durable, super good ventilation and the looks - well, theyre different and therefore cool looking!
  • 3 0
wouldn't be an urge with out looking like it has speakers installed in the helmet
  • 2 0
Thank you for some what getting away with the older design that had fugly holes all over the place. This looks a little bit more cleaner!
  • 2 0
This article reads like a google translate or when you just pick the first autocorrect suggestion 50 times in a row. Nice looking helmet though.
  • 3 0
Absolutely! This is either the worst press release ever, or a poor translation.
  • 1 0
Would the grid thingies come off easily on this one as they did on the previous model?

Would it be possible to remove and clean all the inserts and pieces, which is not possible on the previous helmet?
  • 1 0
that was my biggest problem with the previous model. They clear that up in the text of the article though:

"The inner padding is entirely detachable and washable"
  • 1 1
 MMM... LET ME THINK.

Gt guys end up with a BBQ and cold beer. Urge crew ends up with some sort of pic-nic and red wine. Hmmmmm... I think I'm going for the BBQ and Beer.

Strange video to me. Not suitable for publicity!!!.

 I want some GOLD GRILLS!
  • 7 3
 Yup. Still ugly.

I used to have a down-o-matic. Not bad helmets but nothing to write home about either. Crashed it and it worked like a helmet should although I still ended up with one hell of a concussion.
  • 2 0
When you've got fab ripping the new canyon you kinda don't notice the helmet!
  • 3 0
i'd be up all night to get lucky in that helmet
  • 2 1
Very nice, love it much more than previous version with a weird mouth vent holes.
  • 1 3
Urge helmets suck. I had one it fell apart. I sent it in to warranty department and they did nothing it offer a crash replacement. Customer service was terrible. The guy had a bad attitude on top of it all. Stay away from these helmets.
  • 2 1
Another lightweight full face from Urge=More concussions even at pathetically low speed crashes.
  • 1 0
Yeap. Great lid if you don't plan on crashing.....but my bell is still rung from when I scrambled my noggin in this helmet last year.
  • 1 0
Curious how last years model tells you this one is going to be worse? Considering all of their claims are that it's better?
  • 5 0
@onemanarmy: Well it'd be pretty bad marketing to claim that your new helmet is functionally worse than its previous iteration..
  • 1 0
@capitansean: True. But it'd also be illegal to claim that it does better on the tests... Least that's my understanding... that you can't lie about passing safety tests...
  • 1 0
If it makes me look like Fabian, the thats good enough for me, has that starfighter space look too, Im diggin it!
  • 2 0
I have no words for this level of ugly
  • 2 2
The sizes are goofy but I like the helmets. S/M or L/XL. No way, I am a solid small and want my helmet to fit.
  • 4 0
 they are 5 differentes sizes : XS (53-54cm), S (55-56cm), M (57-58cm), L (59-60cm) and XL (61-62cm).
  • 1 0
I fit a medium D3, but I found that the best fit for me with the down-o-matic was the L/XL
  • 1 0
@urgebikeproducts: Then I stand corrected. Might have to look a little deeper.... Smile
  • 1 0
Those skull vents look like they'd compromise protection...
  • 5 4
I've got the urge to comment this article.
  • 2 0
Makes me want to get downomatic like its 1999
  • 1 0
I'm all for progression of safety, but damn that thing is ugly
  • 1 0
What part of the back keeps the goggle strap in place? Or am I just blind?
  • 1 0
the rubber on the side and the indent on the back
  • 1 0
 looks like my tamiya 4wd
  • 1 1
 i like it a lot.
