Anyone else underwhelmed from watching this? I'm sure it's massive but POV footage never does stuff like this justice. Looking forward to seeing it from an angle that shows how nuts this idea really is!
@gavlaa - That's my whole problem with go pro or similar cameras. We end up getting a lot of lackluster footage of what may have been a really challenging ride because it's hard to capture changes in terrain height when you're looking parallel to it.
I think that this would look big even from POV if he jumped straight, the problem is that with the spinning you can't really see anything. But from the run in speed you can tell that shit is wack.
Go pro themselves are the ONLY ones that have been able to capture footage on a POV camera and have it look really effin crazy! But pretty sure zink is back on contour now that they are back?
@jrocksdh & ZKP: I agree that elevation change is really difficult to show on film generally, but POV really can give a great impression of speed/movement. Being in a train of riders is key for me- it gives scale as well as better sense of change in elevation. For true awesome edit material you need to be within a foot of the person in front whilst they spend the majority of the trail going sideways.
@gavlaa Agreed on a train of riders. Helmet or chest cam footage from the trailing rider can be neat. Even rear facing cameras mounted on the lead rider can be pretty cool. I just think that there's too much really bad helmet cam footage clogging up pages. There's so much bad that it doesn't seem worth it when good footage shows up.
I agree with abundance of yawn inducing GP footage. I don't agree about it not being worth it. Every now and then a little gem pops up- the POV of Gee following Dan Atherton in the quarry at Revolution for example. We also get to see loads more crashes now as nearly every crew has at least one gopro pilot!
I ride above the ski run he is hauling down, it is SO much steeper in person. Too bad I could care less to actually be bothered to go and watch this. I'll leave that to those easily impressed dorks from LA that will be in Mammoth. My guess is they will hype the jump for hours "waiting for the wind to die down" then he'll do his jump, everyone will stumble back to their car and drunkingly drive back to their $300 hotel room.
The rampage flip was way gnarlier. I'm gonna drop this 70 footer once in practice then backflip that shit in a comp when everyone is scared shitless about the wind..
I'm not hating on the process here at all, but when you can session an airbag before hitting it for real, it kinda takes away from the cowboy up insanity that is cam zink. Regardless, this is FKNA Rad.
Canyon flip was very impressive. I believe Cam McCaul was going to attempt it too. But the big drop in Rampage is "blind" one. And I don't know of any other rider that would attempt something like that. Add in his 360 drop of 2010 Rampage is still probably is the greatest one of all time. And if he never injured himself during the canyon gap in 2012 I bet he would have done the backflip in that competition. But Wade Simmons schooled him in one of the NWD movies.
ZK- That's probably true. Saturday didn't seem bad at all with winds aside from some random gusts but then again the weather out there is very unpredictable, making it really dangerous for something like that. I cannot wait for Zink to flip this. The POV makes it seem like he's got it on lock, unless the airbag isn't where he plans on landing. Everyone says it doesn't look like a 100ft. gap and it might be because he's not going that far yet. These kind of long distance records are always worked up to and maybe that's the case here because it does look like he could start higher on that hill. Either way, the real jump is going to be absurd.
@scott-townes I wasn't sure if it was true. May very well have been another thing entirely, but that's what I thought I read about his canyon flip. Either way it was incredible to watch.
If you stop the video, there's something that looks to be a speed display on the right side. Says something around 43. I'm guessing it's speed in mph. That's damn fast if I do say so myself.
Oh, I didn't notice that speed trap... might be further proof he plans to jump bigger than in this vid because the article advertising this attempt claimed he would be going faster. I hope that's not just marketing hype.
Ya its completely freaking insane and i know its massive but gavlaa is right POV never does it justice. Only people that ride will understand but to most others it looks easy haha
@0:39 Speed trap clocked him in at 43.06 mph (I am assuming mph), which is just crazy! Zink's ball size must be aerodynamic enough not to slow him down.
Actually he needs the conditions to remain exactly as he is practicing on, otherwise his speed may vary and change the jump characteristics. But yeah, that run-in is rough.
Even the top notch F1 media show have stated said difficulties.
I will be at the Kamikaze DS and DJ event again this year, if I'm not off climbing El Cap that week.
